Finally figured out what's wrong with Harol's design

So – ever since Harol's design came out in the manhwa, it's been driving me crazy, and NOT in a good way.

The problem is this – I took one look at this guy and thought: "That's not Harol." And I couldn't get rid of the impression since then.

I couldn't pinpoint what was exactly wrong. There didn't seem to be anything particularly wrong... Only that there wasn't anything right about it. The design was definitely missing something.

When I pictured Harol before this moment, I kinda pictured him looking similar to Hilsman, except maybe younger? And a bit more rugged, with a some facial scars or something. A labcoat, maybe. Some bloodstainds. Definitely a more "soldier from the battlefield" look.

Remember: this character didn't show up to this meeting from a peaceful environment. The Whipper Kingdom's army canonically fought a very bloody battle immediately before this. There is no way he'd look this clean when showing up to meeting Cale, even if he DID try to clean up to meet foreign guests.

Finally, a discussion with someone on discord helped me realize what is exactly wrong here.

This Harol... looks every bit like the aristocratic world of mages that he hates.

Think about it. If this was Harol in the past – it would make sense. A scientist, working for the goverment. One of the intelligence class. A clean slate. But underneath, a rage at the abuse of power and human experiments would be boiling. A thirst for blood. And eventually... this clean-looking, civil man, would utterly SNAP, grab a freaking axe or something and start murdering magic users alongside many others, in an attempt to erase all of them from existence.

This Harol does not look like he went through that yet.

He doesn't look like a man who abandoned civility, who murdered aristocrats, who planned to do so to other mages in the future. This character does not look like he has blood on his hands, like he thought through brutal battles. He should have been stained, with a lot less polished hair, definitely stubble – don't tell me they bothered with such personal hygiene on a battlefield?? – and most importantly, a savage look under the thin vail of civility shown to Cale as a potential business partner.

If Harol looked like this later in the story – after he settled down, started rebuilding Whipper Kingdom, cooled down his bloodlust et cetera – he could have looked like this again. But at this point, it doesn't make sense at all. He has no excuse looking this clean. He's a human, not a Whale of a Dragon.

You see, Toonka wasn't supposed to be handsome in the book, but his design at least makes sense. It still feels right, because it's wild and aggressive. Not so with Harol.

So here's the problem. Harol's manhwa design doesn't reflect his current characterization. In fact, it goes directly against it. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who felt that way.

No one spoil me for future chapters I’ve been going back to compare parts of the novel to comic chapters I’ve read. And it is expected as descriptions and certain pieces of dialogue cannot make their way to a manhwa format. But you do end up almost with two different characterizations of the cast.

Translations also play a big role in this. And I don’t think it’s a problem really as it isn’t too different but it is undeniably noticeable. For instance, during KDJ’s funeral scene, in the novel he says how he wanted to shout for everyone not to mourn him. And how he felt strange seeing Yoosung cry and throw flowers on his grave. But in the manhwa, he looks at the whole scene pretty unbothered. Some of Dokja’s inner dialogue gets shaved off so he appears more cold. Another is during YJH vs. Nirvana, when Sooyoung is watching KDJ’s body.

In the comic, she only says “Are you really going to die like this? What if you’re 3rd place?” She notices he isn’t bad-looking and makes an off comment saying why is she’s worried about him. Then in a panel later in the chapter, we got the shot of her grinning while lifting his mouth. In the novel, it includes these lines but it gives Sooyoung a whole section to ponder on how KDJ is an ordinary person. How he’s struggling and is just like her.

It describes her expression as uncomfortable, between a smile and a frown. Then she does the mouth lift and says “It is really strange.”

So in one version she’s cocky and unserious. In another version, she’s very conflicted. I don’t plan on reading the ORV novel from the beginning when I catch up, instead I’ll continue where the comic left off. I don’t say this in order to discredit the webtoon, I love sleepy-C’s art so much and it’s super enjoyable. But even without looking at the novel art, the book and the manhwa give different vibes.

Kiriyama Rei from March Comes in Like a Lion - Probably my favourite character possibly of all time. Introverted, kind of ace-coded right up until the end of the manga when it changes (and since the anime never ended he stays ace-coded throughout that lmao), very human, extremely depressed, and I just think he's a very good depiction of like...what it's like to live with extremely repressive depression and post-trauma while not necessarily knowing you have those things.

Dazai Osamu from Bungou Stray Dogs - He's a brilliant intellect genius with too much ability to know so much about the world that he kind of ends up suicidal all the time due to his upbringing / some of the things he's done and also what he's experienced. I just enjoy him. (Notable runner up here is Nakahara Chuuya but dslkajf)

Felix Harrowgate from the Doctrine of Labyrinths trilogy - Angsty, PTSD, waspish, 'I'm going to hurt you because I was hurt and then hate myself and do very self-destructive things about it but keep that part a secret so I just look like a constant dickhead,' brilliant, very good at magic. Love this dude. Would walk hundreds of miles for this dude, like the song. Would definitely write a long-ass fanfic about him.

Daeshik from Love So Pure - I love this guy SO much. He's a side-story / secondary pairing in the manhwa but I LOVE him because he's so against type. He's dorky but not in a very cute way, he's overbearing, he's SO neurodivergent coded it's painful and sometimes hilarious, he's determined and ambitious, he's not 'hot' in any typical kind of twink way, and I know he's split the fandom between 'god he's so annoying' and 'Daeshik is the BEST.' The whole webtoon is fucking amazing anyway, but Daeshik has my whole heart in his journey from 'dorky annoying overbearing friend' to 'oh I just realised I'm gay and now everything is Pride Pride Pride and I'm definitely crying next to a dildo I bought that was too big for me.'

Dana Scully from The X-Files - I didn't know it at the time, but this was very much my bisexual awakening. I mean I'm pretty heavily ace now, but I'm mostly not into cishet dudes, and I had pictures of Scully up on my wall like how did I not fucking know. Anyway, scientist, smart, 'so done with your shit' and just wry and witty and *clenches fist* so short and tiny and powerful. I love her. (And Gillian Anderson).

Loki from the MCU - Not necessarily every iteration, but I do love how Tom Hiddleston plays him, and I appreciate the queerer representation. Adore this guy. Look at him, what an absolute dickhead of a god. 10/10 would read him in hurt/comfort fics and PWPs again.

Hyunsoo Seo and Youngchan Baek from Perfect Buddy / XXX Buddy - Possibly my favourite manhwa of all time and I really hope that stays true because it's not finished yet. Idk how to describe these characters because they're both very complex as you get to know them better, but basically 'angry wet cat man with past trauma that he hides exceptionally well vs. Gwyn-dimensioned blond puppy dog who is just pretending to be a puppy dog because he knows exactly how threatening he is and is willing to be to protect the people he loves.'

Murderbot in the Murderbot novella series - I think all of us - or most of us - find Murderbot incredibly relatable and that's refreshing as fuck in any novel series tbh. (ART as runner-up though, love that fucker).

Sebastian Michaelis from Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler - Honestly there were a lot of kind of 'extremely powerful but kind of shitty fuckboys' I wanted to put in this category including Gojou Satoru from JJK, Reigen from MP100, and even Louis from Beastars, but Sebastian's gonna win out because I still don't know if he's going to eat Ciel at the end of that series and I very much love not knowing because he's such a devious fuckhead. Love that not-actually-a-man.

Yuurakutei Yakumo (Kikuhiku) from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - I just... *flails* Almost no one has seen this anime series and it kind of kills me because firstly the books were written by someone practiced in writing BL and even though this isn't BL you can still tell the vibes are there. Secondly, one of the most ace-coded characters ever. Gender-fuckery abounds, which is fun. Thirdly just, honestly, more folks should watch this?

There were a lot of characters I know I missed but I'm pretty satisfied with this list.

apothecary diaries anon here again! yeeees, the amount of times i've thought 'this would make a great icon/meme' while reading the manga is amazing! pretty sure most of them are of maomao too haha. (very tempted to edit her and jinshi into the 'woman screaming at cat in restaurant' meme lol) aaaa, don't get me started on how female friendships are treated in fiction; a story app i play keeps on having so many 'rivalries' or 'pretended to be your friend but isn't' plots, but it's almost always with women! like, no, can't i just befriend the characters??? have lovely friendship scenes??? i cry

unfortunately, i haven't had a chance to watch the anime of apothecary yet, i've just seen gifs and screencaps of it. instead, i binged over 10 chapters of the manga when i first messaged you, then another 10 the day after lol. i think i know the triggering plot point you're talking about though; like you say, it's amazing how they put all these dark details in the story, but handle the topic well and sprinkle it into the world building/character backstories. i'm at chap 26 rn, and i'm super interested in a certain character who just showed up + their motivations. (ooh, i'll check out ascendance of a bookworm too; sounds like my cup of tea!)

ah, as for the light novels, i looked it up on amazon (the only place i know where to buy light novels in the uk) and there's a physical release date for next year! i understand what you mean abt LN vs manga collecting; i like having a physical book in my hand for novels, but having digital copies for manga.

Right?? I can't judge the manga cause I haven't read it but in the anime, the tone is wonderfully executed and it's the right balance of exposition and pacing. WAIT WHAT REALLY?? Honestly it's why I got tired of shoujo isekai. They always pit women against each other over some guy. It's so hard to find good series in that genre anymore cause they almost all have the same formula. I want my female MCs but I don't want any of the unnecessary catfighting. I just really hate how that side of the community has blatant misogyny cause you know fr they won't treat a morally ambiguous and handsome male character in that way. :/

Random ask, do you have any mlm books (eastern or western) or BL manga/manhwa that inspire your writings and arts?

Yes!! Not so much books, as I don’t care for most of the mlm books I’ve found and read, but certainly BL anime and manga!

Most inspiration comes from me watching something and going “holy shit I love the dynamics here BUT I WISH IT WAS—“ and then a story is born

For Dancing With Death, my main inspiration was Ai no Kusabi (remake), which I LOVED the power structures of (Blondies, Pets, nobles owning sex slaves as status symbols, etc.) but absolutely DESPISED the actual world setting (fucking SPACE 😭 such a turn off). Plus some of the titles and politics are just stupid yaoi brain shit, so I wanted to grow the concept into a more complex world with the same master/slave dynamics! And give it a fuller plot, since Ai no Kusabi wasn’t as fleshed out as I wanted it to be.

I also took a handful of ideas from the Captive Prince series, which I read during the course of plotting DWD, and used it to help me set up the Gaildan Vs. Dornean cultures on the Isles.

Little Bird takes inspiration from FAR too many things to list here, but a big and rather surprising one was actually a josei manhwa with an intricate BL backstory called An Innocent Sin (Oh Gye). The male love interest’s mother and sister were both incestuous + abusive in many other ways and gave me a few ideas on dynamic and tactics for Ellum and his mother. They were rather BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION in the comic lmfao but that’s to be expected, so I hoped to work my little psychological muscle and turn it into something deeper. Other than that, though, one of my FAVORITE stories of all time—Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai (both manga and anime)—was inevitably a big influence on what Callyx and Ellum’s relationship is going to be. So that one is my biggest reference for LB! Missing Love (aka A Married Man) as well.

As far as my art, that inspiration just comes from life experiences, fantasies, mental states, and literally everything else in life 😂 there aren’t any specifics for that one!

Normally, the first step to bookbinding would be Typsetting Your Writing. I use InDesign which I find is not readily accessible, and would need a more detailed guide than I have time for right now.

For those who would like my typset for Wildflowers (which is what I will be re-binding for a friend in this guide), I'll have a final version available shortly and you can use it for practice!

As with all crafts, there are so many ways to achieve the same ends, so I'll be showing you how I do it.

Disclaimer: Printing has always been the hardest part for me, I promise it gets wildly easier after this. I'm also still a new binder, so please bear with me.

Tools:

Acrobat Reader

Double-sided printer (if you don't own one, the library is a great place to get your stuff printed)

Paper (I use standard letter paper)

STEP ONE: GET ACROBAT READER

Make sure to download the free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. I find that it makes the printing easier all in one place.

You can also use: Bookbinder. It will help you re-arrange the pages properly for print. It's been a while since I've used it, since I switched over to Acrobat.

STEP TWO: UNDERSTANDING OFFSET & TERMS

When printing for bookbinding, you're printing two pages side by side. The pages are printed on leafs/sheets. When the leafs are all folded together, they become signets. I'll be using these terms throughout the guide but don't worry if you don't remember them, I'll remind you!

Offset essentially means that we're going to prepare the pages in a way that when they are folded, they follow the correct sequence. (Not sure how to screenshot this.) Luckily, Adobe/Bookbinder does the offsetting for you.

OPTIONAL STEP: SIGNET MATH

For those who hate math, don't be afraid! I'm actually terrible at math, but I'm also very picky with the way I bind my books. Personally, I prefer having less leafs for an easier fold vs. less signets but I know people who prefer the inverse!

I created a file in Google Sheets to help me crosscheck what the program is doing.

1 leaf = 4 pages (back and front)

The reason why I chose 4 leafs is literally just preference. Yes, 30 signets is a lot, but the sewing part gives me such peace I don't mind it at all.

STEP 3: PRINT YOUR BOOKLETS (ADOBE)

Click Booklet. In the preview, you'll see Adobe will automatically put two pages side by side.

This is where I enter the pages manually. Do not hit enter or it will print before you're done! Especially as a beginner, I like doing the pages manually so I can print a single booklet, then check if it printed correctly before doing the rest!

Leave as is if you have a double-sided printer. If you have only a one-sided printer, you can select if you want to print all the front pages, and then switch it to back after you've manually flipped your papers.

The sheets section will allow you to cross-verify if your math is correct if you did it like me, or just see if the correct amount of sheets are being printed. You CAN enter the number of sheets before your pages, but just make sure via the little preview box that the pages are correct.

Nothing to change here for standard books, but just a note -- I would like to try to bind manhwa/manga if I find something I like, and this is where you would change how the book opens.

That's it!

Just rinse and repeat depending on how many signets you have, or your comfort level.

I was very excited about buying a house, my parents reaction to the news where super meh though which made me kind of pissed, now that they’ve seen the house they seem to like it, so I’m glad for that. Me? Needing outside approval? Never.

Hidden is a very relative term depending on how you know me, but I’m a decent archer which might not always be an obvious thing to ask lol

Hi! I have a question regarding POV and looking around your blog and couldn't quite find any answer to it.

So, I enjoy reading comics in my free time, manga, manhwas, superhero comics, etc... And the one thing I can't figure out is the POV? They primarily follow the MC and their thoughts and opinion where they use "I", "my" and "me" indicating first person. But 95% of the time, the reader would also see the thoughts and opinions of other characters in the same scene as the MC also using "I", "my" and "me", where now seemingly both parties are in first person to the reader, just one being the main one the readers follow?

I don't mind this POV at all, I actually enjoy it, but how would this POV translate into writing where you keep the 1st pov but get some aspects of I believe is 3rd pov omniscient?

So, to summarize: What would you call that kind of POV and how would/could you translate it into writing?

POV in Comic Books vs Literature

POV in comic books, manga, etc. is usually considered to be omniscient when there is a narrator, but the thing you have to understand is that even though these include text in the way of narration, dialogue, and character thoughts, these are visual stories unlike literature which is not visual.

In other words, there's a big difference between a narrator telling the reader what a non-POV character is thinking versus the reader seeing that thought in a thought bubble. It's not the same thing.

So, because these are two different mediums where one is visual and one is not, it's not a method that can be used in either. Comic books require the visual aspect of a thought bubble to show what characters are thinking. Literature requires the narrator to tell the reader what characters are thinking, which includes when the narrator is the first-person POV character. In literature, the narrator either knows what all characters are thinking and can report that to the reader (third-person omniscient), or the narrator is limited to what the POV character is thinking (first-person and third-person limited.) In rare cases, you may have a limited POV where the character is telepathic or otherwise able to know the thoughts of other characters, meaning the narrator can, too. But that would be the only time that could happen in a limited POV.

Hi again absolutebl! I was wondering if you have data per country on how many of the BLs are adaptations (manga/manhwa/webtoon/y-novels etc.) vs original works.

Since my impression is that most BLs are adaptations, I also would like to ask if you have data on how many BL y-novels/manga/manhwa etc. there are in the BL-producing nations. I think Japan would have the most number but I might be wrong because Thailand seems to have a huge catalog going by the 108 BLs they produced this year alone.

Lastly, would you happen to have an estimate of how many of these BL sources materials are made every year in each of the BL-producing nations? I was curious because Thailand seems to be burning through their y-novels at the current rate they are producing BLs. I did a quick check on goodreads (i dont know how accurate the site is when it comes to these books) but i saw that mame and jittirain have not been publishing since 2018 (based at least from their works whose publication dates are listed - some have no publication dates). I feel like Thailand will run out of source material sooner rather than later. But i might be wrong since i dont have an idea at all when it comes to y-novels because those are the least accessible to me due to lack of English translation.

I am sorry I do not keep this data. MDL lists in the end notes when something is adapted, but I would think the publishing industry data is pretty challenging to get hold of via they different nations since that's already a cagy industry.

THANK U!! i’m hyperfixating on this man of my theme so much it’s actually pretty ridiculous. ANYHOW!! i’ve been normal. surprisingly so? like i don’t feel super depressed lately due to my changing of schools from government to international. i have my perspectives changed so much from like 2 years ago vs now. new identity change aka just realising that i really like it/its pronouns. i now write for manhwa characters bc finally. i’m also more academically better to myself?? like i’m not forcing myself to be the best, but just saying “try exceeding the limit, however if you truly can’t, then stop and prioritise the important things. when you’ve grown, you can try once more and see the difference” really i’m just being mentally healthy this year. of course i still have my ups and downs (especially about a certain topic about myself) but other than that i’m pretty much okay!!

ely this message is so full of life and happiness! I can feel all the serenity hidden in this. I'm extremely grateful that things are going well, you deserved it. I'm thankful that the change of school has been just that positive, and how's it going with the new classmates? And after your thought, we can see how you've matured over time, and I'm sure young ely would be proud of you ;) Ohhh changing the theme is always almost like modifying a little part of you!!! Now that you can also brag about your manhwa knowledge with your writing skills I feel that a part of Ely has shown itself!! I love it mwah mwah ( ˘ ³˘)

I have felt some endless days, always because of the school that has absorbed(?) me as always. But things, in general, are better than last year, and I'm grateful for it :) I'm also part of the school newspaper, and I'm in charge of managing book reviews!! I feel audacious to be part of something like this; I usually stay away from social stuff; but at the same time, I am thankful that I will be able to take care of the part of the books that are the things that I love most!! Thanks to this winter break I count I have time to organize myself for the best (if I fail, at least I will rest!). Because of my friend, I started watching romance kdrama, and now I'm obsessed with them </3 I hope to start writing again soon after this long break!! Honestly, I can't complain either, in the end, it's not all that bad. !!
