Former Bhadrachalam MLA of the CPI(M), Sunnam Rajaiah, succumbed to COVID-19 in the wee hours on Tuesday. Rajaiah, who was also a leader of the Girijana Sangham, had tested positive for coronavirus a few days ago and was taken to a hospital in Vijayawada for treatment, according to reports. Rajaiah was a three-time legislator from Bhadrachalam. He was elected as the MLA in 1999, 2004 and 2014. According to reports, the former MLA is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. His two sons and a son-in-law have also tested positive for Coronavirus, and are availing treatment in Rajamahendravaram. Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao has mourned the death of the former MLA. The CM said, “Rajaiah, who worked for solving people’s problems his entire life, would be remembered by people as the political leader who led a simple life.” The CM also conveyed his condolences to the members of the bereaved family. The former MLA’s last rites are expected to be held at Sunnamvaari Gudem on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ramagundam legislator of the TRS, Korukanti Chander has tested positive for coronavirus. The MLA announced about being infected with SARS-CoV 2 on Monday through a video on social media. The MLA said that he got tested for coronavirus after Ramagundam Mayor Anil Kumar had tested positive a week ago. The Mayor and MLA had participated in the state government’s afforestation drive in Singareni Collieries a few days ago. Chander said that he has been availing treatment in a hospital, and issued a communication on the same, as rivals had accused him of being inaccessible during the crisis. “For the past 10 days, I was not accessible to you all. After the Mayor tested positive a week ago, I too got tested and the result came positive. Hence, I remained inaccessible. So I humbly appeal everyone to understand this. I will recover soon and will serve you. I made this video particularly after malicious rumours are being spread against me that I am unavailable,” Chander said. The MLA added that his health was stable. Chander was the fourth MLA from TRS to test positive for coronavirus. Earlier, MLAs Bigala Ganesh Gupta, Bajireddy Goverdhan and Muttireddy Yadgiri Reddy were infected with the virus. Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan is also under home quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus. The Mayor said that he had no symptoms of the disease and that he was reviewing the GHMC works through video conferences regularly. The Mayor said that following his recovery he would donate his plasma, and organize a plasma donation in Hyderabad.

Telangana minister KTR meets family of Sharath Koppula, student who was shot in US

Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday visited the family of Sharath Koppula, the 26-year-old student from Telangana who was shot dead by an unidentified person at a restaurant in Kansas City in the US state of Missouri.

  Sharath Koppula, who was studying in University of Missouri, Kansas City, was critically injured when a man fired at him at J’s Fish and Chicken Market located at 5412 Prospect Ave in the city. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

  KTR met with the family of the deceased at their Hyderabad residence along with state minister Srinivas Yadav and Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari. Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan was also present.

  “Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed his anguish at the death and instructed his ministers to immediately visit the family of the deceased. We are in touch with the Chicago Consulate as well as our officers here. Since it is a murder and the police are still investigating the case, it might take a little time for the body to return home,” KTR told reporters after the meeting.

  “We asked his parents to stay strong and assured them of our support. In case they wish to travel to America, we told them that the state government would arrange for an emergency visa and bear all costs of the travel for the family. We are also willing to make arrangements if his friends want to travel to India with the body,” he added.

  The identity of the killer, motive behind the killing and other details were not known, but the police suspect that it was a robbery attempt.

  Sharath hailed from Warangal town. After completing his engineering at the Vasavi College of Engineering in Hyderabad, he was employed at a software firm in the city. He moved to the US to do an MS this year.

  “The mother is understandably, under great distress and we have asked doctors to check on her health. We reiterate that the family has our support,” Srihari told the gathering.

  The University of Missouri, Kansas City also released a statement, which said: “We are deeply saddened that Sharath Koppula, a graduate student in Computer Science at UMKC, was killed last evening during an armed robbery at a restaurant where he was assisting family friends. Sharath was an international student and his family in India has been notified. We offer our sincere sympathies to Sharath’s family and friends in the wake of this senseless tragedy. Our campus leadership is reaching out to Sharath’s family and friends and we are making counseling services available to members of our university community.”

  The Kansas City police published visuals of the suspect and said that he was seen in a brown and white shirt.

An eyewitness who worked at the restaurant, told the local Kansas City media that the suspect pulled out a gun and demanded money from the restaurant owner.

  People present in the restaurant ducked for cover and Sharath tried to run towards the back of the store, which was when the suspect shot him in the back.

  The Kansas police have announced a reward of $10,000 for any information of the suspect.

An official press release announced that the Mayor had moved into home isolation and that he is asymptomatic. The mayor’s family members have tested negative. The release from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) also confirmed that the Mayor has decided tgo into home isolation as a precautionary measure. He plans to continue to work and carry out reviews from home through video conferencing. The Mayor also mentioned that once he recovered, he planned to donate plasma and send a loud message to the people about plasma donation. Sources in the GHMC have revealed that a special camp would be set up in Telangana Bhavan to encourage plasma donation. Already, the mayor had undergone tests twice earlier and had tested negative, a source in the GHMC said. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, on July 24, had visited Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister KT Rama Rao to wish him on his birthday. Considering that the senior minister, who is also the son of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, came in close contact with the mayor, it remains to be seen if he will also move into home isolation. According to the latest bulletin issued on Sunday morning, as of 5 pm on Saturday, 1,593 positive cases were reported in the state in a 24-hour period. Out of this, 641 cases were from the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), followed by Ranga Reddy district with 171 cases, Warangal Urban with 131 cases and Medchal district at 91 cases. According to the bulletin, 15,654 samples were tested on Saturday and cumulatively, 3,53,425 samples have been examined. A total of 16 government laboratories and 23 private ones have been conducting tests for COVID-19. There are also a total of 320 government rapid antigen testing centres. Hyderabad has turned out to be a COVID-19 hotspot in the state. In every bulletin, the GHMC area has been accounting for the maximum number of cases. However, in the last few days, the virus seems to be spreading to other districts in the state as well, as semi-urban areas have been reporting a spike in cases.
