📘 Reading One Piece (this is from the last chapter, but it's not a spoiler):
Ok, it's official. Bonney is the most relatable character to me 🍕 (I think this is a step up from when I said I was Big Mom when she destroyed everything because people didn't let her eat the wedding cake).
Tumblr media
And if I was a pirate, my Jolly Roger would definitely have a pizza on it (but the ship doesn't look like a pizza at all btw).

One Piece Chapter 1102 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
And we have returned
For more Emotional Devastation!
Bonney's cathartic freedom is still undermined by the reality of hindsight, and before we end the year Oda intends to make sure we leave in sadness and mourning.
One more time, for Kuma
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release
A Bonney-themed cover this time, eating hot dogs with some wolves
True to her word Bonney has set to sea to find her father, unleashing the Bonney Pirates onto any leads she can find
Typically, the government string up lies to vilify Bonney by saying she attacked villages of elderly and children
Kuma was indeed there, but to protect her and honor his arrangement he has to leave, surprised she became a pirate
Bonney's annoyed, but she is patient too, she also intends to find Nika as well, something to show off to him when they find him
This happens in parallel to Luffy getting his bounty, right after Arlong Park
Dragon decides to 'conveniently' head to Loguetown
Rare Smoker cameo, I miss that dude
Ace getting to show off in front of Jinbe, his brother did just beat his former subordinate after all
Kuma also seems to admire the irony of Luffy being a pirate given his parentage
Meanwhile, Bonney proves herself to still be a good person; only plunder from bad guys and only help people if they need it
The others also help her look older, giving her lipstick and the piercing so that Kuma would recognize her
Bonney also feels that if she becomes a big enough deal, she'll get her father's attention
Back with Kuma though the Pacifista are ready
It would be surreal to see a clone army of yourself in pods
This is around Enies Lobby time, as they mention that some 'rookies' declared war on the WG
Even Vegapunk didn't know about Dragon having a son, but since Vegapunk is gonna be going through Kuma's memories there's no point hiding it
Kuma has made the similarities between Luffy and Nika known too
Thriller Bark recap this time from Kuma's perspective
That Ursus Shock was still madness, I guess now we know how they all survived it though
And look at all this Nothing Happened about to happen
Even Kuma thinks this amount of pain could take him out, showing just how incredible a feat this was
Then we shift to Sabaody, Kuma's got his summons for the upcoming Paramount War
But Kuma is not at Sabaody for Luffy, he's come to get one last look at Bonney
A guy that size cannot sneak in a public place XD
But he's halted by another incident: the punching of a Celestial Dragon
'Who would dare do that?' I think you know bud
It's always good to see Charloss KO'd
And seeing that Luffy did it to protect a Fishman too compels him to make his move
The division is now shown through Kuma's monologue
A tragic monologue as Kuma apologizes to the Revolutionaries for leaving, how he wishes to put his faith into Bonney and Luffy as a legacy, and how he internally apologizes to Luffy, noting that they are not ready yet
'Don't go there yet, after all, you will someday save the world' - I might need a minute for this
And now the Gorosei are back to their fuckery
Kuma has a self-destruct mechanism!?
Vegapunk is again strongly against such a plan, but Saturn continues to gaslight and try to justify their immeasurable cruelty
Means that Kuma has a ticking bomb in him, could that have any key information to where he's going in present?
Vegapunk wants to try and sneak in a way to maintain some of Kuma's personality in exchange, but Saturn shuts him down quickly
'Any attempts to deceive me will fail' - yeah about that one?
The time has come to erase Bartholomew Kuma though, and despite Vegapunk's objections, Kuma feels at ease for how much he fought for him
We bring in the command for Kuma to protect the Sunny
'I'd like to be a stubborn guardian for their home' man...
With Luffy's poster in hand, Kuma notes how moved and motivated he's become by Luffy, how much like the legend of Nika he's become
He believes he'll be king as well
Kuma removes his memories too, not a full on procedure it's like a copy, but one which'll dissipate on touch
Vegapunk however has devised a way to view it without touching though to study it
Kuma gets to watch his life unfold, wondering how many were harmed or troubled by his actions
Panel by panel Kuma sees his life, his parents, Ivankov, Ginny, Dragon, the fishermen, Bonney, Vegapunk, each time running through that field a little older
Tears stream down Vegapunk's eyes at the precipice of the lever
'Your life hasn't caused anyone harm or trouble, but your death will pain everyone who loves you' - fucking god Oda
And before he goes, as all of Egghead mourn the loss of a true saint, he leaves one last message for Bonney, heard in present when she takes the bubble
'Please wish her a happy 10th birthday'
Bartholomew Kuma did not deserve any of this.
Bartholomew Kuma did not deserve any of this.
BARTHOLOMEW KUMA DID NOT DESERVE A FUCKING DAMN THING OF THIS!
Typical for Oda to end the year on a wave of emotions. But it was a spectacularly heart-wrenching chapter, Kuma once again seen through a new lens which elevates him to a top tier character.
There's not much else to say, nothing else really to intuit except whether present-Kuma knows the bomb is in him, and maybe if Vegapunk managed to keep a small piece of his ego within him to act this way. I think we all just need to have a small cry or something.
We'll have a break now so we'll only see a chapter in January, but we can live with that, we do need to recover.
Bartholomew Kuma did not deserve any of this, but he loved, he sacrificed, and his legacy will live on.

I want to put down all the references in the Worst Generation (excluding the Straw Hats and Blackbeard) and the named members of their crews. I'm getting my information from the wiki and adding my own theories/comments where necessary. Ever since I read JoJo, I love finding references in manga.
Fire Tank Pirates
Capone Bege: His surname is obviously taken from Al Capone (whom he also shares his birthday with) and his given name is based on the English privateer William le Sauvage. Him being stated to cut animals' heads off is a nod to the horse head scene from The Godfather.
Vito: His name seems to be taken from Vito "Don Vito" Genovese, a mobster/crime boss from Al Capone's era, and the first name of Don Corleone from The Godfather.
Gotti: He seems to be named after John Gotti, a mobster who ran the Gambino crime family in the 80s (He was nicknamed 'the Telfon Don' due to him facing three trials and being acquitted every time -- the results were caused by jury tampering and witness intimidation-- before being finally sent to prison in 1992).
Chiffon: She's named after chiffon cake, which she also specializes in making.
Pez: His name is the Spanish word for fish, as well as a nod to the candy brand, keeping with the Charlotte Family naming theme.
Bonney Pirates
Jewelry Bonney: Her name is taken from the 18th-century Anne Bonney, who, like Bonney herself, was a noble turned pirate.
Hawkins Pirates
Basil Hawkins: His surname is taken from 17th-century English pirate Basil Ringosel and his given name from 16th-century pirate/privateer John Hawkins. Hawkins is also the name of the protagonist of the 1883 adventure novel Treasure Island (which had a massive impact on the depiction of pirates in popular culture) by Robert Louis Stevenson, who also wrote The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Visually, his design is based off of Joey Jordison of Slipknot.
Faust: He's named after the legendary character Faust, who sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for knowledge and worldly pleasures. The story was most famously told by 15th-century playwright Christopher Marlowe in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Faust.
On Air Pirates
Scratchman Apoo: His surname seems to be based on the practice of "scratching" records when DJing, tying into his association with music. His first name is taken from the Qing dynasty pirate Chui A-poo.
Kid Pirates
Eustass Kid: He's named after the 13th-century pirate and mercenary Eustace the Monk and the 17th-century Scottish (which Kid would be if he existed in the real world) pirate William Kidd, who was also called "Captain."
Kid's Attacks: I decided this needed its own entry. Punk Gibson (Kid's giant arm) -- Named after the US guitar manufacturer Gibson. Punk Rotten (the giant scrap metal head and arms) -- Named after Johnny Rotten, the name John Lyndon used when he was the frontman of the influential punk band Sex Pistols. Punk Vise (Crushing a target with Punk Rotten's hands) -- As "vice" and "vise" are spelled the same way in katakana, this attack might be named after the British punk rock band Vice Squad. Punk Pistols (a harpoon gun made out of metal pieces that acts like a Gatling gun) -- Named after Sex Pistols. Punk Corna Dio (the giant bull he used to attack Big Mom) -- Corna is Italian for horns, alluding to the sign of the horns in heavy metal, while Dio references Ronnie James Dio, who was very big in that genre; no, I'm not making the obvious joke. Damned Punk (the giant railgun he used to blast Big Mom off Onigashima) -- Probably named after the British punk rock band The Damned. Punk Clash (after magnetizing someone with his Awakened Devil Fruit, they attract very large and pointy metal pieces) -- Named after the British punk band The Clash.
Killer: His laugh alludes to the song 'Psycho Killer' by the New Wave band the Talking Heads, as the chorus is the same ("fa fa fa fa fa"). The song might be the source of his name. His helmet strongly resembles that of Daft Punk member Guy-Manual de Homem-Christo.
Heat: He's likely named after the experimental rock band This Heat.
Wire: He might be named after the English rock band Wire.
Gig: In keeping with the Kid Pirates' music-related theme naming, a gig is slang for a live show.
Dive: She's likely named after stage-diving, a common practice among musicians and their fans.
UK: His name may come from the UK, where many classic punk bands originated from (ie, the Clash, Sex Pistols). Alternately, he might be named after the Sex Pistols' song 'Anarchy in the UK.'
Pomp: He's likely named after pomp rock, more commonly known as arena rock (examples of bands known for arena rock: Styx, Toto, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Boston).
Bubblegum: His name seems to be a reference to bubblegum music (rock and pop in a catchy and upbeat style marketed toward children), which influenced punk rock, new wave, and melodic metal.
Reck: He's named after the bassist of the Japanese punk rock band Friction.
House: She's named after the electronic music subgenre house music.
Boogie: He's probably named after the electronic club music subgenre called boogie.
Mosh: He's likely named after moshing, a rather violent form of dancing. Appropriate for a member of a crew known for their violence.
Hip: She's named after hip-hop.
Papas: He's named after the folk rock group The Mamas & the Papas, the indie rock band Papas Fritas, or both.
Jaguar: He's likely named after the Fender Jaguar electric guitar. Alternately, his name could come from Mick Jagger's last name, as "Jagger" and "Jaguar" are spelled the same way in katakana.
Quincy: Her name likely comes from the producer and musician Quincy Jones, who produced Michael Jackson's albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad, and has 80 Grammy Award nominations and 28 Grammys.
Hop: She's named after hip-hop.
Compo: He might be named after an abbreviation of 'musical composition.'
Disc J: His name pretty clearly comes from disc jockey, more commonly known as DJ.
Fallen Monk Pirates
Urouge: He's named after the 16th-century Ottoman Pirate Oruc Reis. He seems to be based off of Grigori Rasputin, who needs no introduction, and/or Ji Gong, a Chinese monk known for having supernatural abilities, behaving bizarrely, and not following Buddhist monastic rules. Interestingly, both these figures have movies (Rasputin the Mad Monk, a 1966 Hammer horror film starring Christopher Lee as the titular character, and the 1993 Hong Kong film The Mad Monk) that might have inspired his epithet.
Drake Pirates
X Drake: Drake is sometimes synonymous with dragon, especially in Middle English; appropriate, given that dinosaur bones likely inspired legends of dragons. His name is also taken from 16th-century pirate and adventurer Francis Drake. Random (but likely not a deliberate reference) fact: He shares his birthday with the singer/rapper Drake.
Heart Pirates
Trafalgar D. Water Law: His surname is taken from Cape Trafalgar in the south of Spain, which was the site of a battle between the British and French/Spanish fleets which famously killed Lord Nelson. His name is taken from 18th-century pirate Edward Low, who was notorious for violently torturing his victims before killing them, which may have inspired Law's own reputation for cruelty.
Bepo: He might be named after Lord Byron's poem 'Beppo.' He's also likely named after bear, polar.
Shachi: His name is the Japanese word for killer whale, which makes his friendship with Penguin (who's named after killer whales' preferred food) kind of funny.
Jean Bart: His name comes from the 16th-century French privateer Jean Bart.
Ikkaku: Her name means 'narwhal' in Japanese.
Uni: His name comes from the Japanese word for sea urchin.
Clione: 'Clione' is the Latin name for sea angels.
Hakugan: His name means 'snow goose' in Japanese.

I wanted to put out something short and sweet to introduce my pirate/mermaid au for Billy the Kid!! I’ll definitely be writing more for this and eventually putting out a long form fic for ao3 and here on tumblr so stay tuned
Tumblr media
You had Billy entranced since the moment you met.
Your eyes shone and glimmered in the light like opals, you moved and spoke in a way he’d never seen before. Your hair fell over your shoulders, thick and voluminous despite being wet, covering your ever-bare breasts. You wore little jewelry, but what did adorn your neck and wrists was made of pearls that added, not distracted from your impossible beauty.
Not to mention your lower half, a tail of iridescent scales that caught the light in ways reminiscent of stained glass in a church. Meeting you certainly felt like Sunday mass— you made him want to fall to his knees and worship you. You were perfect.
Billy met you at night, under the cover of darkness on the shore, where you lay with your belly in the surf. The way your eyes brightened as he came close made his heart swell to burst. “Hi.” You had your hands clasped on your chest, hiding something from him.
He had a few guesses as to what it was, as he shrugged off his boots, rolling his pants up to his shins and wading ankle-deep in the water. “Hey, darlin’.”
Sometimes Billy wondered how such an ethereal woman, a mermaid could find him interesting. For Christ’s sakes, you had the voice and heart of an angel. You were so esoteric, so mystical. If the ocean was a woman, you were her— incomprehensibly deep, he’d be a fool to try and understand every corner or curve of you. He was just a man.
But that seemed to be what you loved about him; there was a calming, rugged simplicity in him. A humbleness you wanted to appreciate with your whole soul. He adored you with no expectations. His love was not debt.
Billy sat on the damp sand, not minding his pants getting wet from the small, lapping waves. You had the giddiest smile on your face, crinkling your eyes and absolutely enthralling him. Perhaps it was your inhuman nature, something special about your being, but you drew him in like a sunfish on a hook. He regretted his silly human need to breathe— otherwise, he would happily let you drag him to the bottom of the sea if it meant he could be with you. Really, truly be with you. No fears of Jesse and the rest of the crew finding out and harming you. No fears of your parents discovering Billy and your meetings, and never allowing you to the surface again. Fears of this strangely beautiful connection being ripped from him, where it had already nestled itself a home in his heart.
But he would settle for this, only for the glimmer in your eyes and smile on your cheeks as you opened your hands. “For you!” Billy leaned over his knees, his lopsided grin growing to match yours.
In the center of your palm, the smallest of shells, a soft cream dappled with brown at the creases. “F’me?” Billy couldn’t help laughing the words, gently turning over the shell in your hand to find that the inside of it was a smooth lavender. Beautiful and delicately intricate— not unlike you. You hummed softly, the sound a song of itself, pressing the dainty shell to his own calloused palm.
“Do you like it?” Your brows drew together hopefully as you watched him inspect the shell. Billy snorted through his nose, shaking his head and looking up to meet your gaze.
“It’s beautiful.” He confirmed softly, “ain’t surprised you found it. Beauty knows beauty.” The way your nearly luminous eyes twinkled at the compliment, Billy felt a bit weak at the knees. You pushed yourself onto your hands, folding your tail under you and leaning forward to press a tender kiss to his slightly chapped lips.
You tasted like crisp saltwater, a stark contrast from your soft, surprisingly warm lips. When you broke from him, far too soon for his liking, you carefully took his fingers and curled them protectively over the shell. “Could I get you more?”
As if you even had to ask. Billy tucked some water-logged hair behind your ear, silently admiring the dainty pearl earring the action revealed. “You kiddin’? I’d love more, baby.”
Well, he’s not sure what he expected. Maybe a couple more before you got tired of it.
Billy didn’t expect that every time he met you, regretfully always in the dark, you bore gifts that he didn’t know how to repay. Billy’d scoop you into his arms, treading along the shore to give you a taste of what walking around must be like, and you’d lift a palm full of little shells, sea glass and pearls.
Once, you’d swam up to him as he sat on the rocks. Billy cocked a brow, eyes glancing under the water, “Whatcha got there, pretty girl?” And you’d smile shyly, swimming closer.
“Close your eyes, Billy.” You willed, taking his hands from his knees and moving them to cup to receive the gift. He was grinning boyishly, dark brows lifted as you placed something much heavier than he expected into his hands. Well, not particularly weighty, but much more than the few pearls and shells you’d given him. It was full of ridges and jutting edges, rough on his palms and wet from the saltwater.
“Can I look now?” Billy grasped the object gently, trying to subtly get an idea of what it was. You perched your elbows on the rock by his legs, admiring his face for a moment. Part of you wanted to reach out, to feel the subtle on his jaw under your fingertips. But you resigned to nod and coo, “Look.”
He opened his eyes, the blue irises bright with mirth as they settled on the large conch in his hands. He laughed a bit, turning over the sand-colored shell and admiring it. “Awh, baby! Y’outdid yourself, huh?”
The sheer joy in Billy’s expression filled you with a giddy pride. Apparently the things you’d accepted as natural, common things were beautiful rarities for him. And the happiness you felt from sharing them with him never seemed to ebb. “I knew you’d like it.”
“I love it. I gotta get you somethin’ sometime, it ain’t fair.” Billy’s eyes flicked to you, holding yourself up on the rock and staring up at him with twinking doll-like eyes. Your chin propped up on your fist, your wrist bare. An idea flashed behind his eyes, but he played it off by shifting the conch to one hand, the other holding your chin and tilting it up to him. He leaned down and pressed his lips to yours gently.
You let out a soft hum into the kiss, reaching your arms wound around his shoulders to, with surprising strength, tug him down into the water. Maybe his clothes were getting soaked, and maybe it was a bit cold for a swim, but Billy’s eyes crinkled in a deep laugh, carefully placing your gift aside and pulling you close.
“I don’t need anything.” You protested, voice sweet as honey against his water-logged muss of hair as he pecked at your neck. The giggle bubbling past your lips told him otherwise.
You deserved the entire world.
Tumblr media
Billy took much care in selecting a gift fit for you. A plain chain wasn’t good enough— well, frankly everything affordable in the market wasn’t good enough. He was beginning to think that no worldly gift was worthy of being ‘round your wrist.
Pearls seemed too on the nose. Besides, if you wanted pearls you would’ve already been drenched in them, with how common you told him they were where you’re from. Anything with shells or sea glass felt just the same— he wanted to give you something you’d appreciate as something new, the way he appreciated everything from you. Something special. Nothing seemed to meet his standards for you.
He nearly gave up, planning to try at the next port town and just give it to you when the ship docked back here. Just as he was about to make his way to the pier, a particular jeweled bracelet caught his eye. He couldn’t have imagined a better gift for you; a simple golden chain, adorned with three sizeable opal stones. Stones that shone like the scales of your tale, iridescent like everything about you.
It had been most of his salary. But he didn’t give a damn— it was perfect. You were worth more than gold or riches, anyway.
What was even more priceless was your reaction. Billy tread through the sand with his hands behind his back, staring at the back of your head as you stared out at the horizon, the stars coming down to meet the sea. When you felt his presence more than heard it, you leaned your head back to look at him looming over you, a grin splitting your features. “Hi.”
“Hey, princess.” Billy hummed, crouching to press a kiss to your temple before moving to sit cross-legged beside you. His hands were cupped in his lap, hiding the gift. If you glowed this beautifully in the moonlight, he wondered if seeing you in daylight would knock him senseless. You pressed a simplistically beautiful little peach shell into his knee with a smile. “Mmm, pretty.” Billy hummed, pride washing over you similar to the seafoam currently lapping over your tail.
Your bright eyes flicked to his hands, brows drawing together in an impossibly cute expression. “What’s that?”
Billy smiled nearly shyly, pulling his hands apart and lifting the gold bracelet laid over his fingers. Lying over his knuckles, the teal flecks in the opal caught the moonlight in a way reminiscent of your scales. The grin that parted your lips was worth every minute of searching, every penny spent. Your hand came up to cup over your mouth, regretfully hiding that smile as you gasped.
“Oh, is it for me?” You gawked, reaching out to trace a finger over the chain, a free hand splayed over your heart. Billy nodded, smirking proudly. You didn’t have this kind of jewelry where you were from.
You let him clasp the bracelet ‘round your wrist, you admired the way the metal and the stones caught the light. Oh, you’d never seen anything like it!
Finally, Billy could give you something equally special as everything you’d given him. He could finally return the favor of showing you his world. He wondered if the bracelet would bring thoughts of him to your mind, a smile to your lips, the way all your gifts had for him.
Billy could only hope to be half as preciously intriguing to you as you were to him.

“What do you mean they were together for a year?” Nami asked, raising an eyebrow as you sat behind her, fingers skillfully braiding her hair. She had been hounding you for some quality girl time lately, especially since you’d been too wrapped up in your new relationship…or whatever you wanted to call it. It felt like forever since you’d hung out with her or her flat mate Bonney.
You sighed, focusing on the steady rhythm of weaving Nami’s soft strands. Across from you, Bonney was lounging in an armchair, her face slathered with a green mask, chomping on crackers with the dedication of a pro athlete. She shot you a skeptical glance beneath her mask. “You at least stalked her, right?”
“She added me on Instagram already, no need,” you replied, still focused on braiding. Bonney’s eyes nearly popped out of her head, like you’d just admitted to committing the biggest faux pas. With a dramatic sigh, she grabbed her phone from the table beside her, unlocking it in one smooth motion.
“Girl, that’s rookie stuff. You gotta dig deeper. What’s her name again? Yuki something?”
“How is any of that gonna help me with this?” you groaned, feeling the heat of frustration rise in your chest.
Nami smirked as she painted her nails, not bothering to hide her amusement. “Oh, come on, don’t you want to know more about Law’s ex?”
“No!? Why would I?” you snapped, a little too quickly. The defensive tone in your voice only made Nami and Bonney exchange knowing glances before bursting into laughter.
“Yeah, right,” Nami teased, the grin on her face widening. “You’re telling me you don’t care at all about the girl your Loverboy was with for a year?”
You groaned again, knowing full well they had you there. Bonney, meanwhile, was scrolling through her phone with an expression that was far too mischievous for your liking. She definitely found something.
“Well,” she said slowly, her tone all too playful, “if you’re really not interested, I guess I won’t show you this adorable old pic of her and Law…”
Your hands froze mid-braid. Curiosity flared up like a warning bell, but you tried to play it cool. Bonney was definitely baiting you. But before you could decide what to do, Nami was already sliding off the couch, careful not to mess up her freshly painted nails. “Oh, Let me see!”
You watched as they giggled together, huddling over Bonney’s phone. The temptation gnawed at you, dragging you deeper into the spiral.
“…okay fuck it, show me,” you muttered, standing up and leaning over the back of the armchair to get a peek too, curiosity getting the better of you.
On Bonney’s screen was a cozy group photo, probably from a Christmas gathering. The usual holiday clichés were all there — tacky sweaters, a fireplace, Rosinante in the center, grinning like an absolute goofball, surrounded by two people you guessed were Law’s parents. You smiled despite yourself. But it faded when your gaze found Law, standing off to the side, his face its usual stoic mask. Next to him, unmistakably, was Yuki.
Your heart dropped suddenly.
Sure, you knew it was from his past, but something about seeing them together, in such a personal setting, hit you harder than you’d expected. It felt like peeking into a part of his life that was still off-limits to you.
Before you could fully process the flood of emotions, Bonney scrolled to another picture on Yukis Facebook, obviously not being used for ages. This time, it was just Law and Yuki, standing under a snowfall. They weren’t posing for the camera but caught in a candid moment, smiling at each other like the rest of the world didn’t exist.
That one hurt.
“Wow, how petty do you have to be to keep that stuff?” Nami mused, waving her hands to dry her nails faster. Bonney nodded, tossing another cracker into her mouth, treating it all like juicy gossip.
Their casual comments snapped you out of your daze. They were right — this was all in the past. Ancient history. You were the one dating Law now, and from what he’d told you, Yuki was nothing more than a chapter long closed.
Still, the pictures gnawed at you. Was it jealousy? Or just the realization that Law had once shared parts of himself with someone else, in ways you hadn’t yet?
“You okay?” Bonney asked, her teasing tone now replaced with concern. Her eyes studied your face, searching for a crack.
“Yeah,” you lied, trying to shake off the unease. “It’s just… weird, you know?”
“I get it,” Nami chimed in, her voice softer now, more understanding. “But that’s all it is — the past. And you’ve got the hot emo boy now.” She winked, throwing you one of her playful smiles that made you chuckle despite yourself.
“Besides, she’s ugly,” Bonney added with a smirk, tossing her phone onto the table. “And you know, insane.”  Yea you couldn’t deny that. Especially after what Yuki had pulled on you.
Bonney stood up, feeling like switching the topic now after seeing how you your mood had dropped, heading toward the kitchen. She didn’t indent to sadden you after all. It was supposed to be a fun girls night. You should relax and have fun, not cry over a relationship that is long over.
Moments later, you heard the clinking of bottles, and soon enough, she returned with a bottle of wine and three glasses. “Let’s drink on that crazy bitch.”
“How did you know what I was thinking?” Nami laughed, extending her hands carefully so as not to ruin her nails.
You joined in, shaking off the last of your lingering doubts. This wasn’t supposed to be a night for wallowing in jealousy over Yuki. Fuck her anyway.
As the three of you clinked glasses, the weight in your chest finally lightened. You pulled up your legs on the couch and relaxed again. The cheap wine and the support from your friends really were what you needed right now. You took a sip, savoring the slight burn and letting out a satisfied sigh.
“So, what’s the real deal with him?” Nami asked, her eyes gleaming with curiosity as she leaned back next to you on the couch. “I mean, brooding bad boy, kind of a mystery. Are we talking about some serious feelings here?”
You felt your face flush at the question. Leave it to Nami to cut straight to the point. “I don’t know,” you admitted, swirling your wine glass a little. “I like him. A lot. But it’s… complicated.”
Bonney raised an eyebrow, taking a long sip of her wine before chiming in. “It’s always complicated with guys like him. Let me guess, he's got that whole ‘tragic backstory thing going on?” She said it with a smirk, but there was a knowing look in her eyes.
You laughed softly. “I have no idea.” You really didn't, barley knowing anything about his past, beside his Ex. Law's tempo at revealing sensitive topics to you were slow, even Yuki was only mentioned after what had happened.
Nami teased, raising her glass to her lips. “Because it sounds like you're still figuring him out.”
“Maybe,” you said, leaning back into the couch. “He just doesn’t talk much about his past, or his family...or anything personal.”
Nami and Bonney exchanged glances, and Bonney let out a dramatic sigh. “Girl, just don’t let him pull you into some dark mess without a lifeline. I swear, guys like him can be a black hole of emotional baggage.”
“Bonney’s right,” Nami said, giving a playful nudge with her foot. “You need to protect yourself too. But, if you think it’s worth it, we’ve got your back.”
You smiled, appreciating their concern. “Thanks. I mean it.”
Bonney, ever the practical one, stood up, stretching lazily as she glanced toward the window where the sun had long since set. “Alright, enough with the heavy stuff. We’re supposed to be relaxing! How about we find something trashy to watch and finish off this wine?”
And so you did, the bottle emptied quicker than any of you expected, and before you knew it, Bonney had already popped open another one. The mood had shifted into something light and easy, with laughter filling the room, nonsensical conversations flowing freely, fueled by the sweet, warm buzz of alcohol. The filter that usually kept things polite was long gone.
“Y/N, you gotta tell me something…” Nami leaned in closer, her cheeks flushed from the wine, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. “Is he good?”
“Good at wha’?” you replied, blinking in confusion.
Bonney groaned, rolling her eyes and helpfully making a rather crude hand gesture to spell it out. “You know.”
You snorted, trying to keep your composure but feeling the heat rise to your face. You couldn’t help but giggle at the sudden shift in conversation. “Oh my god.”
Nami was relentless though, scooting even closer, her eyes twinkling with playful intent. “Come onnn, spill! He has to be. You know what they say about tall guys…”
Bonney waved a hand dismissively. “Pfft, doesn’t mean any tall guy knows how to actually use it. Trust me, been there done that.”
“Don’t distract her, Bonney!” Nami scolded with mock seriousness, her focus laser-sharp. “I need to know, Y/N. And don’t worry, I’ll keep it to myself.” She shot you a look that made it clear she absolutely would not, but the alcohol in your system made you feel less guarded, and you found yourself grinning.
“I mean…”
“I need details!”
“I’m not giving you details!” you laughed, cheeks burning as you covered your face.
“Okay, fine,” Nami said, settling into her seat as if ready for a formal interrogation. “Just answer me with a yes or no. That’s fair, right?”
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t help but play along. “Okay, fine.”
She gave you a mock-serious look. “He a top?”
“Yah, obviously.”
Bonney burst out laughing, nearly spilling her wine. “What do you mean obviously?!” she cackled, and you couldn’t help but laugh with her.
Nami waved her hand, shushing Bonney dramatically. “Okay, okay. Next question.” She paused for effect, leaning in like it was a life-or-death matter. “Is heeee… making sure you finish?”
“Sure.”
“Always?”
You hesitated for a split second before smirking. “Yup.”
Both Nami and Bonney exploded with laughter, raising their glasses in triumph. “Nice!” they shouted in unison, clinking their glasses together with a high-five, clearly way too pleased with the answer.
“Why are you two more excited about this than me?” you laughed, the weight of earlier worries completely gone.
“We’re living vicariously through you!” Nami teased, taking another sip of her wine. “Besides, it’s not every day we get juicy intel on a mysterious bad boy.”
You chuckled, shaking your head as the conversation drifted back to more ridiculous topics. The laughter, the teasing, the shared warmth of friendship — it was exactly what you needed. Whatever stress and insecurity had been gnawing at you earlier had been drowned in wine in the good time you were savoring. Right now, you were just grateful for your friends.
While you had your well-deserved girl’s night, Law was already on his way to pick you up, something you'd asked him to do earlier when you knew the night with your friends would go late and include a little too much wine. He walked up the stairs, playing with his keys absentmindedly, making them spin around his finger. Soon he found the right apartment by the sound of your laughter echoing through the hallway, along with music blasting in the background.
Just as he reached out to ring the bell, footsteps approached from behind. Turning slightly, Law saw a green-haired guy walking up to him with the same deadpan expression he usually wore. They locked eyes for a moment, the air thick with silence until the guy spoke up.
"And you are?" the stranger asked, clearly heading to the same apartment.
Law raised an eyebrow, a bit annoyed at the intrusion. "Picking someone up. You?"
"Alcohol.”
Law’s confusion deepened. What was this guy talking about?
Zoro, Bonney and Nami’s upstairs neighbor, never passed up the opportunity for free drinks. They were good friends, and he was bored enough to drop by whenever things got rowdy.
"Right..." Law said slowly, frowning as he turned to finally ring the bell, only to find the green-haired guy standing next to him like it was no big deal. Great.
A few moments later, the door flew open, revealing Bonney, now holding an entire bottle of wine instead of a glass. She blinked in surprise at the sight of two men standing at the door, then a mischievous grin spread across her face as she locked eyes with Law.
"Hey, Y/N! Your boy toy is here!" Bonney called out, her voice loud enough to carry inside.
Law's eyes widened, a faint blush creeping up his neck. He already regretted agreeing to come.
Nami appeared next, her curiosity piqued. She peeked out the door to get a look at this Lover of yours, but the moment she spotted Zoro, her expression shifted dramatically. "What the hell are you doing here?"
"Free booze," Zoro replied with a casual shrug, shoving his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants like this was an everyday occurrence.
Nami groaned, clearly annoyed. "You gotta to stop mooching off us every time you hear wine bottles open. I swear, you owe me for every beer you’ve emptied." She tugged Zoro inside by the sleeve, muttering about making him pay her back later. He stepped inside with a satisfied grin, more than happy to partake in the free drinks.
Meanwhile, Law stood awkwardly in the doorway, observing the chaotic interaction. He felt like he’d just walked into a sitcom, unsure of what to do or say. Bonney’s eyes gleamed as she took him in, her mind clearly wandering to the things you’d revealed earlier about your sex life. The way Bonney stared a bit too long at his crotch made Law clearly uneasy. Especially with that grin of hers...was that how women felt?
"Is...Y/N coming?" Law asked, hoping to speed things along and escape the situation with you as quick as possible.
Bonney leaned casually against the doorframe, still holding her bottle of wine, an amused smirk on her lips. "I think she’s busy looking for the corkscrew... but you should totally come in and join us!" Her grin widened as she grabbed his arm, ignoring his attempts to protest.
“Wait—” Law began, but it was already too late. Bonney had pulled him inside with a strength that surely surprised him, as the door clicked shut.
You finally emerged from the kitchen, holding the corkscrew in one hand and a fresh bottle of wine in the other. When you spotted Law looking a bit out of place in the middle of your girls’ night, you had to chuckle a bit.
Zoro being already sprawled on the couch like he lived there rent free didn't seem to faze you.
“Oh, Law!” you beamed, walking over to greet him, blissfully unaware of the minor chaos swirling around him. With the alcohol warming your system, you impulsively stood on your tiptoes and pressed a quick kiss on his cheek, catching him completely off guard. His chest fluttered, though he tried to ignore the sensation. “Didn’t expect you so soon.”
“It’s past midnight,” he replied dryly, raising an eyebrow but failing to hide his slight surprise. The casual peck had thrown him off more than he cared to admit.
"Can we stay a little longer, please?" You looked up at him with wide, pleading eyes, the same look a child give their parents when begging to stay out late with friends. Law, ever the night owl, didn’t particularly mind, though the thought of spending even more time in the middle of this lively scene made him want to run for the door.
“I can pick you up later,” he offered, thinking you might take him up on it. Yet luck didn't seem to be on his side today.
“Nooo, you’ve gotta stay! C'mon!” you chuckled, grabbing his hand and pulling him into the living room before he could even process a proper response. He opened his mouth to protest, then quickly closed it, realizing he didn’t really have much of a choice. With a resigned sigh, he slumped down onto the couch next to Zoro, who was already sipping on his drink.
Zoro lifted his bottle and gave Law a questioning look. “Mh?”
Law stared at him for a moment, then sighed again. What kind of ape communication was this.
“Sure, whatever.”
Grinning, Zoro popped open another bottle and handed it to Law. They clinked their bottles together, though Zoro took an impressively large gulp, like he hadn’t had a drink in days. Law, glancing at him from the side, took a much smaller sip, eyeing the other man’s easygoing nature with mild confusion.
You returned with a freshly filled glass of wine, plopping down on the armrest next to Law, clearly pleased that he’d agreed to stay. Even though you forced him. Literally.
However, his discomfort kept getting worse, as the doorbell rang again continuously, signaling the arrival of even more people. The once quiet hangout was quickly turning into a full-blown party, something Law hadn’t remotely anticipated. First, a tall, elegant woman walked in, introducing herself as Robin, followed by her boisterous and overly enthusiastic husband, Franky, who instantly made his presence known with his loud voice and equally loud personality.
Then came a duo of chaos in the form of Luffy and Usopp, both bursting through the door with enough energy to fill the room three times over. Luffy immediately darted toward the snacks, while Usopp settled down on the floor comfortably, since the couch was already crowded.
Law, by now, had sunk even further into the couch, clutching his beer bottle like it was some sort of lifeline. He wasn’t one for big crowds, especially not when surrounded by people he barely knew. His eyes flicked around the room, trying to find something—anything—to anchor himself amidst the growing chaos.
Zoro, completely unfazed, leaned back casually, like he was used to this kind of scene. “Not a fan of big crowds, huh?”
Law shook his head, taking a small sip of his beer. “No, not really.”
Zoro grinned and gave him a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. “Good luck, man. This is just getting started.”
As the room filled up with more people and the noise level rose, you noticed Law’s discomfort. Walking over to him, you leaned down with a soft smile. “You okay?” you asked, genuinely concerned.
“I’m fine,” he muttered, though you could tell he was far from comfortable.
You chuckled, brushing your fingers lightly across his arm. “You’ll survive. Promise.”
Law sighed, but a small smirk tugged at his lips. You always had a way of calming him down, even when everything around him was spiraling into chaos. At least he wasn’t completely on his own—
“Let’s play karaoke!”
"Oh, yes!" you practically squealed, leaping up from the armrest with a burst of energy. Without hesitation, you dashed over to help Bonney set up the console, your hands flying over the controls as you excitedly plugged in the microphones for a round of Let's Sing.
Law blinked, watching you leave him alone and dash to the game with that enthusiasm of yours. He leaned back on the couch, crossing his arms. Yep. He was on his own for this one.
As the singing began—not that Law would even call it singing—he sat there, watching you laugh and belt out lyrics with your friends. A small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He wouldn’t admit it out loud, but seeing you so happy with your friends was... nice. The buzz of conversation and laughter filled the room, but Law was content to observe from the sidelines.
Thankfully, Zoro wasn’t all that eager to join in either, providing Law with some much-needed silent company as the he nursed his drink. However, Zoro had also downed more than enough beer for the night. Without a word, he stood up and ambled toward the bathroom, leaving the spot beside Law empty. Law sighed, sliding further into the seat, hoping to stay out of the growing mayhem.
But of course, his peace was short-lived.
"Hey! You Y/N’s boyfriend?"
Oh god, no. Please.
Franky, all loud enthusiasm and booming presence, plopped down beside him, making Law almost jump from his seat. Among the group, Franky was arguably the loudest—but it was a tight race. Everyone besides Zoro and Robin seemed to have a default volume setting that hovered somewhere between “obnoxious” and “headache-inducing.”
Law shot Franky a grumpy side-eye, not bothering to hide his irritation.
"We're not together."
Franky looked genuinely perplexed, glancing between you and Law like he was trying to solve a puzzle. "What, you ain't?" He scratched his chin, then broke into a grin. "Ah, I see. Not official yet, huh? Haha, yeah, I get that. You know how long it took me to convince my lady to be mine? Two years! But look where we are now!" His laughter boomed across the room, drawing a wince from Law, who massaged his temples in an effort to stave off the growing headache.
"Aha," Law muttered, clearly uninterested, but Franky wasn’t bothered.
"So how long you been seeing each other then?" Franky leaned in, undeterred by Law’s obvious reluctance to chat. His curiosity was boundless, and his energy relentless. "C'mon, you can tell me. Y/N’s like a lill' sister to me. I gotta make sure she's doin' alright, y'know?"
Law exhaled, feeling the weight of the conversation shift. Franky wasn’t going to drop this, was he? As annoying as the guy could be, there was something sincere about the way he cared for you. Maybe Law should make more of an effort. After all, you had meshed well with his group, even handling Shachi and Penguin's relentless teasing and matching Rosinante’s high-energy friendliness. If he was serious about you—and he was—maybe it wouldn’t hurt to connect more with your friends.
"Few months, I guess," Law finally muttered, sounding almost disinterested. But Franky wasn’t buying it.
"Few months, huh?"
Law sighed, giving in with a little more honesty. "Eight and a half weeks, give or take."
Franky’s grin widened. "Now we're talkin'! I knew you had the details. That’s good, man. Real good." He clapped Law on the back with enough force to nearly knock him forward. "You’re a lucky guy, y’know that? Y/N’s special."
Law nodded slowly, his gaze drifting back to you as you yelled into your microphone with your friends, completely oblivious to the conversation happening on the sidelines. Yeah. He knew exactly how special you were. And for the first time in a long while, he found himself willing to let someone in—despite everything he'd been through. Even if he didn't said it openly, the seriousness of his feelings for you was undeniable.
He just wasn’t ready to share all that with the world quite yet…
As the next song blared through the speakers and the room erupted into more chaotic laughter, Law felt his patience wearing thin. The noise, the energy—it was all a bit too much for him. He scanned the room, watching you sing with your friends, your carefree joy almost contagious. Almost.
But Law had reached his limit for the night.
Silently, he stood up from the couch and slipped past Franky, making his way toward the door leading to the small balcony. He needed air, desperately. As he stepped out, the cool night breeze hit his face, soothing the tension that had been building in his temples.
He exhaled slowly, leaning against the balcony, gazing out on the night life on the streets below him. For a moment, he let the peaceful stillness wash over him.
The door behind him creaked open, and he didn't need to turn around to know it was you. Your presence was always unmistakable to him.
"Running away?" you teased lightly as you approached, your voice soft in contrast to the lively noise spilling out from the room behind you.
"Needed a break," Law muttered, not taking his eyes off the street. "Your friends are... a lot."
You laughed softly, coming to stand beside him, letting your shoulder touch his. "Yeah, I guess they can be. But you will get used to it.”
Law raised an eyebrow, glancing sideways at you. "I tolerate it. For your sake."
"Right, sure," you said, rolling your eyes but smiling as you did. The soft moonlight highlighted your features, and for a moment, neither of you said anything. The noise from inside was still faintly audible, but out here, it felt like a different world.
"You didn’t have to follow me," Law said after a while, his voice quieter now. “You can go and enjoy “singing” with the others.”
"I wanted to," you replied simply, still gazing at the sky. "Just checking if you’re doing okay."
He huffed, but there was no bite to it. “I’m fine on my own.”
“Yeah,” you said with a gentle smile, your eyes meeting his. “But you don’t always have to be.”
Law didn’t respond right away. He stared out, the familiar tension in his chest loosening just a little. You had a way of making things feel… easier. Less complicated. Even when you weren’t saying much, just standing there with him, it felt like enough.
“I don’t expect you to suddenly become best friends with everyone. But... you’re part of this now. Part of my world.” You smiled a bit drunk, your voice warm. “And I’m really glad you are.”
Law turned his head slightly, looking at you for a long moment. His expression softened in a way it rarely did around others. There was a weight to your words that he couldn’t ignore.
“I’m glad too,” he murmured, almost as if admitting it to himself.
You beamed at him, reaching out to take his hand, your fingers brushing his. He hesitated for a second before gently locking fingers together, the small gesture grounding him in the moment. You both stood there in comfortable silence, the distant sound of your friends' laughter fading into the background.
“Think you’re ready to head back in?” you asked after a while, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
Law let out a small, amused huff. “Not yet.”
You laughed softly, slightly leaning against him, while Law really appreciated you checking up on him, even if he seemed repelled at first. Sometimes he wondered how well you could read him, tell what he actually needed. Franky was right, you truly were someone special...
But your peaceful moment was quickly shattered—private time wasn’t exactly a concept the gang understood. The balcony door burst open, and in came Luffy, practically bouncing on his feet. Somehow, despite being the only one who hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol, he had more energy than everyone combined.
"Ah, fresh air!" he exclaimed, stretching his arms out wide.
Law groaned inwardly, letting his head hang for a moment. He should’ve known.
Before either of you could react, Luffy squeezed himself between the two of you, casually breaking the connection of your hand in Law’s. He leaned over the railing, staring down at the quiet street with a big grin plastered on his face, completely oblivious to the mood he had just bulldozed through.
Law’s eyebrow twitched dangerously, his patient running low. How dense can one person be?
"Hey, Luis—"
"My name is Law," he corrected flatly, already regretting it because—
"Anyway!" Luffy completely ignored the correction, plowing forward without missing a beat. He grinned brightly at you both, clearly unfazed by Law’s deadpan look. "We have this weekly movie night on Mondays. You should totally come and join us!"
"Pass," Law replied immediately, his voice clipped. "I’m busy during the week."
"Luffy, Law works," you chimed in with a chuckle, clearly amused by how little the concept of schedules seemed to exist in Luffy’s mind.
Luffy blinked, staring blankly as if the notion of work baffled him. “Can you... maybe not work?” he asked, tilting his head in that curious, innocent way of his, now casually picking at his nose as if the problem of work hours was one that could be solved by sheer willpower.
Law stared at him, completely dumbfounded. Did he just—
You were already laughing at the sheer absurdity of the exchange.
Luffy, unfazed by Law’s irritated silence, kept going. “Fine! How about Taco Tuesday then? I know you gotta be free for tacos!” His grin stretched ear to ear, as if he’d just come up with the most foolproof plan in the world.
Law groaned, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I also work on Tuesday.”
“All day long?” Luffy asked, his expression serious, as if the thought of someone working all day was inconceivable to him. "That’s gotta be, like, illegal, right?"
You were practically doubled over in laughter at this point. Watching Luffy try to integrate Law into your friend group was like watching someone try to fit a square peg into a round hole—both characters were complete opposites, and it was hilarious to witness.
It wasn’t that Law didn’t want to make an effort. It was just... Luffy.
Sensing Law’s frustration, you stepped in to smooth things over. “Maybe we can arrange something, Luffy. On weekend instead?” you suggested, smiling at your overly enthusiastic friend.
Luffy’s face lit up like a lightbulb. “Awesome! That’s even better! Saturday or Sunday works. Or both! Oh, wait—what about Friday night? We could have burgers and movies!”
You shot a glance at Law, who was now staring out at the street again with a blank, resigned look on his face. He wasn’t saying anything, but you could practically hear the thoughts running through his head.
“Luffy, let’s… take it one step at a time, alright?” you said gently, still laughing as you patted his shoulder. “We’ll figure something out.”
Luffy’s grin somehow got even bigger. “Sweet! You guys are gonna love movie night. We always watch the best stuff. I mean, sometimes it’s just old kung fu movies or stuff with explosions, but who doesn’t love explosions, right?”
Law muttered something under his breath, too quiet for anyone to hear, but you knew he was nearing his limit.
“Luffy, maybe you should head back inside and check on the others,” you suggested, trying to throw Law a lifeline. “I think Usopp and Franky are starting another game.”
Luffy’s eyes widened with excitement. “Oh yeah! I almost forgot about that!” He turned on his heel, already halfway back to the door. “I’ll save you a spot for the next round!” he called over his shoulder, leaving just as quickly as he’d appeared.
The moment the door closed behind him, Law let out the deepest sigh of his life. “How do you deal with that?”
You grinned, slipping your hand back into his. “They mean well.”
Law let out a dry laugh, shaking his head. “Still exhausting.”
After the cold air had finally cooled you down enough to want to head back inside, Law followed close behind, settling into his usual spot on the couch. To his surprise, Zoro was back in his own seat as well, nursing yet another bottle of beer. Law couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. How many of those had he already gone through? He started to seriously wonder Zoro’s relationship to alcohol.
As Law moved his empty bottle aside and sat down, Zoro glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. “Mh?” he asked yet again, holding up his beer as if offering to grab another.
“Nah, pass. Gotta drive still,” Law replied, his tone flat.
Zoro gave a brief nod, content to let the silence settle back in. It wasn’t awkward, though—just two people comfortable in their own quiet. That was something Law appreciated about Zoro at least; he wasn’t one to fill the air with unnecessary chatter.
After a few minutes however, Zoro broke the silence. Clearly aware that Law was quite uncomfortable still. “You’ll get used to it. Don’t worry.”
Law raised an eyebrow, glancing at him. “Do I have to?” His voice carried the same uninterested energy as Zoro’s, though there was a hint of dry humor beneath the surface.
Zoro took a slow sip of his beer, then looked at Law with a lazy but knowing smirk. “Yup. Too late now.”
Law sighed, leaning back into the couch, his arms crossed as he stared at the chaotic scene unfolding around them—Luffy still bouncing off the walls, Usopp and Franky laughing hysterically at whatever ridiculous antics they were up to, and you, blending in perfectly with the madness, laughing and teasing Bonney as she tried to argue about the best way to combine pizza with pasta.
Law leaned back, feeling a strange sense of acceptance. He wasn’t entirely sure if he’d ever fully get used to this kind of madness, but looking around at your friends, and back at you, he started to think that maybe—just maybe—he didn’t mind trying for you.

The sea was a home in and of itself, but it was lonely all the same.
Sitting on the rocks and looking out at the moonlight reflected on the water, Billy pondered this thought, but came to no conclusion from it. The crew of the ship was docked here for the night, on a regular supply run. It was also a chance for the men to stretch their legs, flirt with local women, blow off steam; gear up for the next bit on the ship.
It had been a long night of drinking and roughhousing, and truly, Billy was exhausted by it all. The usual distractions hadn’t sufficed, and now he couldn’t sleep, plagued by the thoughts he’d previously stuffed into the recesses of his mind.
Piracy was far from his first choice in lifestyle, but he’d had little choice in the matter. Growing up by the sea meant he’d taken to the work easily, and he got along with the crew well enough, but his inner voice irked him. It wasn’t honest work, he knew. And sometimes when he was tying a knot or leaning over the railing, he saw his life stretched out before him if he continued on this path. An endless path of mopping, sailing, robbing. He hated how it played out before his eyes.
Shaking his head slightly, Billy began to strip his clothes off, deciding maybe a night swim would clear his head and get it back to normal. It was never good when he got too deep into thought- it only made things worse for a future version of himself.
Summertime made the water warmer than it would have been otherwise, and he left all his clothes on the rock, sliding down into the water. The slight chill sent his thoughts scattering back into the dark from whence they came, and he breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, some peace. A little while in the ocean and they ought to stay where he wanted them for a good while, maybe even until the next time the crew came to port.
Since it was dark, he floated on his back, unashamed of his nude state. He was definitely far enough away from the village that nobody would be able to see him without coming real close. Relishing in the quiet of it, he breathed the salt air and closed his eyes briefly.
While some found the sea terrifying due to the unknown of it all, Billy was comforted by the mystery. His mother had told him young that the water was like a woman; an untamable enigma. One could only fully appreciate it if they leaned into the secrecy. Regarding both women and the sea, the message had served him well.
There was a sudden splash behind him, and he shifted so he was treading water. It was probably just a fish, but he’d learned quickly in his days as a sailor to keep his guard up at the first hint of danger.
Turning in a full circle, Billy saw nothing. Just the moonlit water. The waves lapped gently at his chest as he surveyed his surroundings. A human wouldn’t have been able to hide this easily. An animal would have swum far from him by now.
He moved a little closer to the rocks just in case, keeping an eye on the horizon. Putting one hand on the rough surface of the boulder that held his clothes, he peered at the water below. Nothing, as expected. It was stupid to think he’d be able to see even a foot under.
Another splash. Billy jolted, whipping his head around. He was getting suspicious. “Anyone near?” he called, squinting as if that would make the visage of darkness clearer.
There was the sound of a body in water. A human body. Reaching up for his pistol on the rock, he half-shouted, “I know you’re there! I can hear ya.” Billy stretched his arm. The gun was just out of reach. “Come about!”
Just as he was convinced he’d made the whole thing up, there was a movement in the shadow of the rock a little ways from him, maybe ten feet. Something was hiding.
Intrigued, he stopped trying to grab his pistol. A feeling told him his unknown companion wasn’t a threat. Billy cocked his head, focusing on the spot. “I ain’t gonna hurtcha.”
Slowly, the creature revealed itself from the shadows. The pale light of the moon revealed more than he thought it would. He saw it wasn’t a creature at all. It was a woman. And a stunning one at that.
You were unlike anything he’d ever seen.
Beauty so rare it felt otherworldly. Long, wet hair sticking to your breasts, and he could tell they were bare under that. Your shoulders were uncovered, except by spiderwebs of hair.
He knew he was staring, but he couldn’t help it. There was a magnetic quality to you that he couldn’t shy away from, that he wouldn’t if he had a choice. You blinked at him owlishly, innocently. “Are you a human?”
Oh, your voice. Lilting and light and only comparable to music. He regained his bearings, realizing the odd question. “‘Course. Were ya expectin’ the kraken?”
You tilted your head, gliding closer to him. He felt his heart palpitate as he got a better view. Now he could see the water clinging to your skin and eyelashes, your goosebumps from the night air. It felt like he was being studied, but somehow he didn’t mind. With anyone else it would have been bothersome. With you…he was happy to have caught your attention.
Reaching out, you took one of his hands in your smooth ones and examined it, turning it over once. You traced a finger over the veins, the bones. It was as if you’d never seen one before. Your touch set him on fire.
He realized the oddity of the situation. “What…what’re ya doin’?”
“It’s just the same as mine,” you held out one of your hands for comparison, flexing the fingers.
“I’d imagine it is.” His mind was half and half. One part grounded, the other transfixed by you, hanging onto your every move.
Shifting closer to him, your eyes wandered over his chest, his face, his hair, as if you were looking for something. Billy swallowed. “Is…is everything okay?”
“You’re just like the men we’ve got,” you said distractedly, not answering his question.
“How different are the fellas where you come from?” Billy asked, a thousand unasked questions on his tongue.
“Not much, apparently,” you said as your eyes roved over him. “Except-” your gaze fell below the water, and he got the distinct impression that you were looking between his legs. Suddenly remembering he was nude, Billy reached a hand down to cover himself, cheeks flushing even though it was dark.
“I…uh…” he stuttered, then remembered the water was pitch black. You wouldn’t be able to see him. He removed his hand, shifting a little closer to you now. “What’re ya doin’ out here so late?”
“I like night swimming,” you explained, not providing a reason for your state of undress. Billy wasn’t in any place to judge, since he was in the same way, but it was just so rare for women to be so unashamedly naked like this. Not the women he’d met anyways; you were clearly something different. Something special.
Still peering down into the water, you were squinting a bit. Again, he felt like you were looking at a bit of him he didn’t normally show just anyone. “It’s dark…maybe if I got a closer look-” You made like you were going to dive down, and Billy quickly caught you by the shoulders.
“Ah…let’s not get so close, dontcha think?” he smiled boyishly, slightly distracted by how silky your hair was even though it was wet.
You seemed to understand. “Maybe another time.” As he was holding your shoulders, Billy sunk a little deeper, and you perked up. “Here, let me help you.” Gently, you pushed him against the rock, just holding him there. He was surprised by your strength. Not that women couldn’t be that way, but he was a fully grown man. Yet another strange thing to categorize. But the more unconventional you were, the more of a desire he felt to know you.
“Do ya…do ya come here often?” he asked, trying to learn something about the strange woman by the rocks.
“Not nearly as much as I’d like,” you smiled, and his heart stuttered. “My father doesn’t like it when I stray too far.”
“Especially when you’re meetin’ strange men after dark I’ll bet,” Billy grinned, and you laughed, pretty and clear.
“I don’t imagine he’d like that very much, no,” you sighed. “Especially since you’re…you know…” you nodded at his body.
He nodded back, his grin still evident. “Ah, yeah. Ain’t imaginin’ he’d be too pleased if he knew I wasn’t wearin’ anythin’ either.”
You frowned confusedly. “It’d probably be more about you being human.”
Now he was lost. “Now…why’d that be an issue? You’re…”
There was a beat of silence. You drew back a little, fidgeting with your fingers. Lips rounding in an oh shape, you swam back further, shyly. Leaning back a little and biting your lip nervously, you lifted your tail out of the water. A long, shimmery fish tail.
Billy’s eyes widened in surprise. And suddenly your fascination with his anatomy made sense. He moved closer curiously, but you drew back, looking slightly frightened.
Recognizing it, he stayed where he was, instead outstretching a hand. “I’m not gonna hurt ya. I was just…surprised is all.” Some of the men on the crew had spoken of dangerous women with tails who sang sailors to their deaths and made them mad with lust, and he hadn’t known whether to believe them. But here you were in front of him…harmless, shy and inquisitive.
Reemphasizing his hand, he gave you a smile. “I just ain’t never seen any merfolk before, not in person. But I ain’t gonna do nothin’ bad.”
Looking from his face to his hand, you cautiously moved closer. Billy nodded encouragingly, trying to coax you over. An idea struck him. “I’ll letcha look at my…” he looked down between his legs. “...sometime.”
Your eyes lit up at that. Cautiously, you reached your hand over to his, your soft meeting his rough. He brought you closer, so your stomachs were a breath’s width from touching.
Now that he had you here he was even more enchanted. He knew why he’d been so drawn to you; no doubt it was a part of your mermish characteristics. But there was something else here, something sparkling. Your eyes were like the sea, tumultuous and secretive, and he liked that.
Lean into it.
Billy dipped his head and caught your lips in a brief kiss. You tasted like salt, which only made him thirsty for more. When he pulled back, he saw your eyes were wide like the full moon behind him. “What was that?”
He smiled. “A kiss.” Reaching up, he thumbed the side of your cheek, tucking some of your hair behind your ear.
You searched his eyes. “We don’t do that where I come from.”
“Ah,” he watched your expression. “Did you like it?”
Adorably, your brow furrowed slightly in thought. Then you slowly nodded, lips parting slightly as you looked up at him. “Yes.”
Billy hummed, his fingers finding the spot under your chin. “Do ya…wanna do it again?”
A slow smile came to your face, and you nodded again, tilting your head up and waiting, looking expectantly at him. He chuckled slightly, the hand that had been holding yours sliding around your waist and pulling you into him. Now he could feel the line where your skin ended and your tail began. Soft and sleek, all of you was.
“Close your eyes,” he said warmly, and you obeyed, your chin still lifted. Smiling at the sight of you, waiting to be kissed, he committed the image to memory. Your eyelashes were touching your skin, causing a pearl of water to fall from one of them, looking like a tear. Skin glowing from the light of the moon, hair wet and curling over your torso, you were a vision.
Then he leaned down and moved his lips against yours again, feeling like every star in the sky had decided to smile upon him that night.
Maybe he’d imagined he could be captivated by a mermaid, but he never dreamed he’d be kissing one.
Billy felt your hands slide up his chest, seemingly testing the waters. He smiled against your lips, nuzzling his nose on your cheek. His hand lifted to slide into your hair, holding the back of your head and pushing your mouth onto his.
You seemed unsure what to do with your hands as they were settled on his shoulders. Billy sensed it and took his other hand off your waist, fingers grasping your hand and dragging it into his hair. It seemed that instinct took over, and your fingers combed through his curls, eliciting a quiet groan from him.
Pressing your chest into his, you folded your arms around his neck, your hand remaining in his hair. The action lifted your body further up, and he lowered his hand to where your bottom would be if you had legs, making you shiver against him.
Pulling back slightly, he ended the kiss with a few gentle pecks, slowly easing you out of it.
Your smile when he opened his eyes was radiant. Billy traced his hand up your bare back, stringing through your salt strewn locks.
“Why do humans do that?” you asked in a hazy way, smiling sweetly up at him.
He returned it, feeling happy in a carefree, foolish way. “To…show other people ya…ya like ‘em. Cause it feels nice.” He stroked the apple of your cheek. “Did it feel nice for ya?” That part was asked in a whisper.
Your eyes were soft, slightly stormy in the best way. “I liked it.”
Billy smiled and leaned in for another kiss, but you lifted your head suddenly, as if you’d heard something. He frowned. “Are you-?”
“I have to go,” you said hurriedly, fixing your eyes back on his. Carefully, you pressed your lips to his for a slow kiss goodbye, and he felt like he was floating.
Before he knew it, you had slipped out of his arms and the last thing he saw was the glimmer of your tail on the horizon.
Billy didn’t move for a moment, dazed by you. He took in a breath, laughing slightly in disbelief.
A mermaid. He’d kissed a mermaid. And it had been like fireworks.
