UN chief warns China, US to avoid Cold War (AP) Warning of a potential new Cold War, the head of the United Nations implored China and the United States to repair their “completely dysfunctional” relationship before problems between the two large and deeply influential countries spill over even further into the rest of the planet. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke to The Associated Press this weekend ahead of this week’s annual United Nations gathering of world leaders. Guterres said the world’s two major economic powers should be cooperating on climate and negotiating more robustly on trade and technology even given persisting political fissures about human rights, economics, online security and sovereignty in the South China Sea. “Unfortunately, today we only have confrontation,” Guterres said.
Canada votes in pandemic election that could cost Trudeau (AP) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gambled on an early election in a bid to win a majority of seats in Parliament, but now faces the threat of being knocked from power in Canada’s election on Monday. Polls indicate Trudeau’s Liberal Party is in a tight race with the rival Conservatives: It will likely win the most seats in Parliament, but still fail to get a majority, forcing it to rely on an opposition party to pass legislation. “Trudeau made an incredibly stupid error in judgement,” said Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and international relations at the University of Toronto. Trudeau entered the election leading a stable minority government that wasn’t under threat of being toppled.
Biden easing foreign travel restrictions, requiring vaccines (AP) President Joe Biden will ease foreign travel restrictions into the U.S. beginning in November, when his administration will require all foreign nationals flying into the country to be fully vaccinated. All foreign travelers flying to the U.S. will need to demonstrate proof of vaccination before boarding, as well as proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of flight, said White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients, who announced the new policy on Monday. Biden will also tighten testing rules for unvaccinated American citizens, who will need to be tested within a day before returning to the U.S., as well as after they arrive home. Fully vaccinated passengers will not be required to quarantine, Zeints said. The new policy replaces a patchwork of travel restrictions first instituted by President Donald Trump last year and tightened by Biden earlier this year that restrict travel by non-citizens who have in the prior 14 days been in the United Kingdom, European Union, China, India, Iran, Republic of Ireland, Brazil and South Africa.
Recall vote highlights California’s geopolitical divisions (AP) The California recall election was a blowout win for Gov. Gavin Newsom that reinforced the state’s political divisions: The Democratic governor won big support in coastal areas and urban centers, while the rural north and agricultural inland, with far fewer voters, largely wanted him gone. “It’s almost like two states,” Menlo College political scientist Melissa Michelson said. Though California is a liberal stronghold where Democrats hold every statewide office and have two-thirds majorities in the Legislature, it is also home to deeply conservative areas. Those residents have long felt alienated from Sacramento, where Democrats have been in full control for more than a decade. A conservative movement in far Northern California has for years sought to break away and create its own state to better reflect the area’s political sensitivities.
US launches mass expulsion of Haitian migrants from Texas (AP) The U.S. is flying Haitians camped in a Texas border town back to their homeland and blocking others from crossing the border from Mexico in a massive show of force that signals the beginning of what could be one of America’s swiftest, large-scale expulsions of migrants or refugees in decades. More than 320 migrants arrived in Port-au-Prince on three flights Sunday, and Haiti said six flights were expected Tuesday. In all, U.S. authorities moved to expel many of the more 12,000 migrants camped around a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, after crossing from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. The U.S. plans to begin seven expulsion flights daily on Wednesday, four to Port-au-Prince and three to Cap-Haitien, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Madrid street party (Reuters) Roughly 25,000 Spaniards joined in an illegal mass drinking party on the streets of Madrid on Friday, which took police until 7 a.m. the following day to break up. The huge outdoor parties, known as “macro-botellon,” have been resisted by Spanish authorities for years, and have taken on renewed significance as coronavirus restrictions limit public interactions. Police may find quieter streets next weekend as closing times for Madrid’s bars and clubs are finally extended to 6 a.m. from their previous 2 a.m. limits.
Thousands flee as lava spewing from volcano on Spain’s La Palma island destroys houses (Reuters) Authorities have evacuated about 5,000 people from villages in the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma as lava spews from an erupting volcano, local officials said. The 15-meter high lava flow has already swallowed 20 houses in the village of El Paso and sections of roads, Mayor Sergio Rodriguez told TVE radio station on Monday morning. Since erupting on Sunday afternoon, the volcano has shot lava up hundreds meters into the air and poured flows of molten rock towards the Atlantic Ocean over a sparsely populated area of La Palma, the most northwestern island in the Canaries archipelago. La Palma had been on high alert after more than 22,000 tremors were reported in the space of a week in Cumbre Vieja, which belongs to a chain of volcanoes that last had a major eruption in 1971 and is one of the most active volcanic regions in the Canaries.
Shooting at Russian university leaves at least 6 dead, 24 injured (Washington Post) At least six people were killed and 24 were wounded after a gunman opened fire at a university in the northwestern Russian city of Perm, the government in the region said Monday. President Vladimir Putin called the shooting at Perm State University “a tremendous tragedy, not only for the families who lost their children, but for the entire country.” Such a rampage, which sent students hurling themselves from windows in a bid to escape the gunfire, is extremely rare for Russia, which has little experience of the kind of mass shootings routinely seen in the United States. Russia’s Investigative Committee, a law enforcement agency, said the attacker was a student who had purchased a hunting rifle in May. The agency said he had been apprehended and is in the hospital for treatment of wounds suffered while resisting arrest. Russia has strict laws on civilian gun ownership and requires people to pass psychological exams before obtaining a license for hunting and sport firearms.
Evergrande debts (NYT) Once China’s most prolific property developer, Evergrande has become the country’s most indebted company. It owes money to lenders, suppliers and foreign investors. It owes unfinished apartments to home buyers and has racked up more than $300 billion in unpaid bills. Regulators fear that the collapse of a company Evergrande’s size would send tremors through the entire Chinese financial system. Yet so far, Beijing has not stepped in with a bailout, having promised to teach debt-saddled corporate giants a lesson. Evergrande is on the hook to buyers for nearly 1.6 million apartments, according to one estimate, and it may owe money to tens of thousands of its own workers. As Beijing remains relatively quiet about the company’s future, those who are owed cash say they are growing impatient.
Pacquiao for president? (Foreign Policy) Manny Pacquiao, the former professional boxer and Philippine senator, has said he would run for president in next year’s election, accepting the nomination put forward by a faction of the ruling PDP-Laban party. His decision comes after Christopher “Bong” Go rejected a presidential nomination from a rival PDP-Laban faction earlier this month, although his running mate, President Rodrigo Duterte, accepted the nomination for vice president. If electoral authorities recognize Pacquiao’s nomination, he may still face competition from Sara Duterte-Carpio, the mayor of Davao and daughter of the president. Duterte-Carpio has topped recent opinion polls but has been cagey about her plans for higher office, saying last week that she would run for another term as Davao mayor in 2022.
Talibanning Women From Work (Guardian, BBC) In mid-August, with American troops still present, the Taliban vowed to respect women’s rights, forgive those who fought against them, and ensure that Afghanistan won’t become a haven for terrorists. Zabihullah Mujahid, long-time Taliban spokesman, gave his first ever public news conference, saying leaders had encouraged women to return to work and girls to return to school. He promised women would retain their rights, but qualified that as being “within the framework of Islamic law”—specifically, Sharia law. To no one’s surprise, it was just ‘happy talk’ meant to allay suspicions of world powers and the fears of Afghans. Soon there were ample reports of Taliban soldiers going house to house, searching for “traitors” and executing them. Working women were told to stay home and schools were shut down, although it was labeled a temporary security measure. In Kandahar, women bank tellers were forced out of their jobs at gunpoint. In the next days and weeks the group’s new government issued decrees restricting more rights of girls and women. Female students in middle and high schools were told they couldn’t return to classes, although boys were allowed to. Female university students were informed studies would now take place in gender-segregated settings, and they must abide by a strict Islamic dress code. Other crippling measures from when the Taliban ruled in the 1990s surfaced unofficially, including a requirement that Afghan women have a male guardian accompany them in any public place. On Friday, female employees in Kabul city government were told they couldn’t return to work if their job could be performed by men, meaning almost 1,000 women who were part of the city’s workforce of nearly 3,000 lost their jobs. The Taliban shut down the Women’s Affairs Ministry, replacing it with a ministry for the “propagation of virtue and the prevention of vice” tasked with enforcing Islamic law.
The Taliban vs. ISIS (Washington Post) After years of waging a holy war to overthrow the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan, Taliban fighters have struggled to adjust to their new day job: the mundane task of securing a city. “All of my men, they love jihad and fighting. So when they came to Kabul they didn’t feel comfortable. There isn’t any fighting here anymore,” Taliban commander Abdulrahman Nifiz told The Post. But the Taliban still faces a violent foe: the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, which claimed responsibility Sunday for a series of blasts over the weekend in the country’s east that reportedly killed several people and injured tens more. The improvised explosive devices were set off Saturday and Sunday around the city of Jalalabad, known as a stronghold for the Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K).
Troll Farms (MIT Technology Review) A report produced by a Facebook employee details the enormous impact troll farms—that is, organized networks designed to spread misinformation—have on the social network. The October 2019 report identified that the most popular pages for Christians and Black Americans were, in fact, operated out of Kosovo and Macedonia. As of October 2019, 15,000 Facebook pages with a predominantly American audience were operated out of those countries, reaching 140 million U.S. users every month. Troll farms operated the fifth-largest women’s page, the second-largest Native American page, 10 of the top 15 African-American interest pages, and every single one of the 15 top pages targeting Christian Americans.

Jerry Garcia’s Grateful Dead cannabis brand is leaving California
Jerry Garcia is one of California's most iconic pot smokers. Born in San Francisco, Garcia led the Grateful Dead for 30 years as the city became an international beacon of the counterculture. He did it all while casually and openly smoking weed. His pot pipe is considered an artifact of California cannabis and thc Krt Carts history.
But even the iconic Jerry Garcia name couldn't survive California's turbulent legal pot market.
The Garcia Hand Picked brand, launched by the deceased musician's family in 2020, has pulled out of the state, a spokesperson confirmed to SFGATE. Garcia's exit comes as cannabis insiders predict a "mass extinction event" for California's pot and thc Lions Carts industry, with thousands of companies expected to go out of business this year.
Andrew DeAngelo, a cannabis consultant and former owner of Harborside, one of the state's pioneering medical cannabis dispensaries, said the Garcia brand probably learned the same thing that all of California's pot and thc Muha Meds Carts companies have realized: "You can't make any money in this market."
"Not only is Garcia leaving, a lot of people are leaving," DeAngelo told SFGATE. "It's a real shame that California is losing out. We're losing out on jobs and economic activity and other places are benefiting from that."
Like most celebrity brands, Garcia selected who to contract out its cannabis, growing and manufacturing to partner companies and then stamped Jerry Garcia's face on the packaging. The company said they are looking for a new cannabis or thc Orchid Vape supplier but declined to be interviewed for this story. It did not elaborate on how long the brand would be on hiatus in California. Garcia Hand Picked is still available in five other states.
"We're taking a pause in California. We want to ensure CA consumers have the highest quality flower for the long term, so we are in the process of choosing a new local partner for cultivation, production, sales and distribution of Garcia Hand Picked in CA," a spokesperson from Holistic Industries, the brand's parent company, said in an email to SFGATE.
California's cannabis and thc Pure One Carts industry has faced substantial economic hurdles in its first four years of legal sales. The state's complicated cannabis regulations and high taxes add costs to legal operators, while widespread illegal farms and retailers undercut legitimate companies. Limited access to banking means these companies pay exorbitant fees for simple banking services and have almost no access to loans. Federal law blocks pot companies from deducting most business taxes from their federal taxes, making pot businesses pay an effective federal tax rate as high as 80%.
These factors have made California a painful place to run a legal pot business. Most small legacy cannabis farms are on their way out of business, and even the country's most prominent cannabis/ vape companies such as Rove carts are leaving the state. 'This is very painful for them.'
Nearly a dozen states had legalized cannabis by the time Jerry Garcia's surviving family decided to start a pot brand built around the Grateful Dead front man, who died of a heart attack in 1995. But the Garcias chose to launch their brand in California, where Jerry was born, spearheaded an artistic movement, and died.
The Golden State featured prominently in that initial launch. An air-stream painted with swirling psychedelic colors crisscrossed the state in late 2020, announcing the new brand. Esquire profiled the family as they smoked a bong in Oakland and asked, "If Jerry Garcia were a kind of weed, what would the high feel like?" The family told Esquire they were planning on opening a Jerry Garcia-themed cannabis consumption lounge at a dispensary in San Francisco, which never materialized.
But there's now only one jar of Garcia Hand Picked available in San Francisco, according to Weedmaps, and there's no sign that any more will return to the Bay Area. DeAngelo, who said he did some early consulting work for Garcia Hand Picked but is no longer involved with the brand, saying leaving California was probably hard on the family.
"This was a hard decision for them, they love California," DeAngelo said. "They were born and bred here. This is very painful for them, I guarantee that."
Eli Melrod, the CEO and co-founder of the Soulful dispensary chain, which deal in thc Wonka Oil said the brand's exit from California was a sign of a struggle for even good cannabis brands to make money in the state.
"California is probably the most competitive cannabis market in the country, it is a market where there are a lot of brands fighting for shelf space," Melrod told SFGATE. "I think for some folks the margins and the challenges in California make it better for them to focus on other states."
The brand is still for sale in Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Oregon. It offers a range of cannabis flowers, thc carts Big Chief Carts , pre-rolled joints, and colorful pot-infused gummies shaped like guitar picks. Its packaging features Jerry Garcia's face connected to swirling, psychedelic colors, akin to Milton Glasser's iconic 1966 poster of Bob Dylan.
Melrod said he usually doesn't sell celebrity brands at his stores because most celebrities have poor-quality products, but Garcia was different. He said they had good cannabis grown by some of the state's best outdoor cannabis growers, like Moon Made Farms and Sonoma Hills Farms.
"We start from a place of skepticism because we've seen a lot of celebrity brands launch in cannabis that are really just basically a celebrity name on a product that is marked up," Melrod told SFGATE. "We really appreciated the approach that the Garcia Hand Picked team took to sourcing. They worked with a lot of great legacy farmers in the Emerald Triangle."
The Garcia brand's departure also signifies that customers are tired of celebrity pot brands. There are so many famous people selling weed that even rock stars are noticing that it might not be an accessible business to invest. David Crosby told the Los Angeles Times last year that he wanted to start his pot brand but said, "Celebrity brands didn't turn out to work nearly as well as anyone thought they were gonna."Can we say Buddha Bear Carts ?
Indeed, Garcia Hand Picked isn't even the first Grateful Dead pot brand. Drummer Mickey Hart launched his pre-rolled joint brand called Mind your Head in 2019, although that brand also appears to be on hiatus. Its website is down, and a brand representative could be contacted for this story.
Garcia Hand Picked and Mind Your Head could return to the state, but Deadheads in California will have to get by without smoking any cannabis blessed by the legendary band.

Contrary to cynics' opinion, Marijuana is not a drug, it's more like an enhancer, not a cure but a booster. It's almost the same as when you're adding seasoning to a portion of really bland food. It's there, it looks delicious, sure. But it doesn't give you the satisfaction you expected from it. So, what to do? Add more seasoning. Salt? Pepper maybe?
People who use Marijuana mainly for recreational purposes are typically after its relaxation properties. It also helps both seasoned and new users to concentrate and encourages thinking. Often, activities that are done under the influence of Marijuana become more enjoyable and stimulating. Whether it be preparing for an upcoming major exam, listening to music, eating, daydreaming, or when there's a sudden interest to write or paint something, even sex becomes rousing than ever when under the influence of this miracle weed.
Basically, the use of recreational marijuana could improve the users’ way of life without having to deal with anxiety and depression---which we can all agree are both nasty experiences no one is down for. For the religious user of the herb, marijuana is more than just what the naysayers thought it does to people. It's an amplifier for creativity and an open mind. It also is the stuff that promotes nothing but love and peace.
For artists, smoking marijuana is like opening the door to Narnia where big wonderful things are bound to happen. Often, after a session, creativity just flows non-stop. Which prompts users from California to have recreational marijuana delivery in Orange County for a steady supply of the stuff. So, whenever there's a need to be creative on the spot, the mind will be instantly cleared of any impediment.
See, there’s more from a mere urge to spark up a joint or take a hit from a bong as a way to relax. If this is your first time to explore the wonders the cannabis flowers bring to whoever smokes it, then, you should know by now that you’re in for a great time. Marijuana is more than just the oversized leaves in Bob Marley’s posters, it’s the stuff that reveals so many great possibilities that could happen. You can smoke weed and be creative. You can smoke weed and have the best sleep you ought to have for weeks. The possibility of enhanced experiences is endless. If you happen to be in California looking for a reliable supplier of marijuana, check out Paris Cannabis for recreational marijuana delivery in Orange County.

Cannabis vodka is tough to get it is actually only sold by several stores almost. You must make sure that you are purchasing authentic Cannabis vodka instead some homemade bootleg rendition. Many people enjoy brewing their own homemade vodka with stems and seeds but by way of a labor intensive process. Should find on the market thing online on at absinthe liquor suppliers. Nothing is standard into the Verdamper, which labor intensive because can all hand painted. Everything must live in place for doing this to work correctly. Everything, including the heating coil, is hand made. The Insane Clown Posse on SNL skit involved SNL comedians asking more ridiculous questions than J and Dope did in original version of "Miracles" by ICP, and yes, when Insane Clown Posse on SNL was filmed, the comedians impersonating J and Dope were indeed wearing the trademark Juggalo face fix up. A Non-Medical Marijuana Opinion Uruguay and now Canada allow production and sale of cannabis containing products. You can eat, drink, vape and smoke to the extent that your health and budget allow. It is very cool that some folks who have cannabis-related convictions will have them removed (depending on what exactly the circumstances were).I live in California, and since prop 64 went into law this year I have MANY choices of cannabis vendors in my town. For me, I like the convenience of being able to purchase quality products, as desired, from sources with reliable hours of operation. For me, the challenge was always finding sources of product. Suppliers came and went, their stock levels varied wildly. It is very nice to always be able to find quality bud. I am willing to pay more for access to steady supply. A long time 'private' supplier I know soundly criticizes me for paying club prices, but I pointed out to him examples of when he could not deliver for lack of stock.I have consumed cannabis, mainly in potent smokable form, for a long time. I mainly vape now, but still roll the occasional spliff, or hit pipes/bongs. I have had bad luck with edibles. Hard to find the Goldilocks spot-- I either eat too little, or too much and then, well hopefully it has never happened to you :-) Have yet to try the tinctures, I have one friend who swears by them. Maybe there is a dermal patch?I have always come across people who were fascinated by the whole concept of marijuana. The counterculture, the rebel attitude of sticking it to The Man. Me, I just want to get stoned. It is not a religious experience, I enjoy getting high. I don't carry the stuff around with me all the time. I engage as a private 'recreational' activity.I have read stories, for example, about folks who packed up then moved to Colorado to attempt to get employment in the cannabis industry. Sadly, the firms adhere to standard conservative employment screenings as far as criminal background checks.I know some growers. They thought their day had come once CA prop 64 was passed. Well, to generate income, one must first produce quality product. They had farm issues related to their 1) lack of knowledge and experience growing in large quantities and 2) their black market attitudes. They hired a competent grower to lead the effort, but they ignored his advice because of the expense. The result was fewer, smaller plants. They blamed the lead grower of course, and then screwed him out of some of the salary he was owed. He had a wife and child and made sacrifices of quality of life to join their business. Meanwhile said growers also had children who lived in a nice house in a nice town with a good school system. The lead lived with his family on the farm with far lesser amenities. How could people with children do that to another person who also has children?Returning to the underground cannabis economy for a moment, because of the difference in price, the 'private' suppliers will continue to thrive. Again, the quality and availability will be very uneven.I see ads for delivery drivers. The model is similar to ride sharing where the driver is an independent operator. I looked into entering the delivery market. You will be an independent contractor, getting commissions. I know someone who had their cargo confiscated by the police. I read news articles about others who had their payload grabbed by LEOs. In all cases, the cannabis was sold (and more) by the police with the proceeds going into the municipal coffers. The vendors offer no support in terms of jail bailouts and covering vehicle impound fees. Operators will have to retain an attorney on their own, probably making the overhead prohibitive compared to realistic earnings.Of course, with any emerging industry, there are discussions about the financial areas, like investing, stocks, startup funding and services for the vendors. In general it is difficult to find banking services willing to deal with cannabis earnings. Some of the vendors I use take credit/debit payments though. I know there is an effort in California to form some type of submarket for financial services that cater to the cannabis industry. Convoluted with the terms of federal, state and local banking laws regarding schedule 1 controlled substances. Ouch.On the regulatory front, the USDA has stated that they would love to grant organic farming certifications to cannabis farms, but they can't because of the schedule1 controlled substance status. There is a guy in California who has organized an organic cannabis farming group. I understand he gets advice and guidance from the USDA. The growers I mentioned above feel that the regulations are too restrictive. For example, they stated that the Colorado structure was 'militaristic.'In my opinion, the tobacco companies will eventually buy out the successful cannabis producers. Cannabis is in the same family of plant as tobacco. Big tobacco is well situated to produce mass quantities of strong, cheap weed. They also have experience with FDA, government and social controversy. Imagine Benson & Hedges Purple Punch 100s filtered lol. Sure, have a mix of tobacco and marijuana-- people do that now.Last thought for you: Google cannabis beer ;-) #Weed #Cannabis #Marijuana #Ganja #tumblr https://ift.tt/2JZ7bW1

Estimated recreational demand far exceeds supply on hand, C.D. Howe Institute says. Licensed cannabis producers have vaults of marijuana, stocked with thousands upon thousands of kilograms ready for Oct. 17, but industry analysts are already predicting all that pot won't meet demand during the first year of legal recreational use. "There is not currently enough legal supply of marijuana to actually supply all the recreational demand in Canada," said economist Rosalie Wyonch of the C.D. Howe Institute, a public policy think-tank. "We didn't have enough producers far enough ahead from legalization that they'll actually be able to deliver enough product to market by the time legalization happens." Wyonch has been tallying the inventory numbers licensed producers are required to provide to Health Canada, along with demand forecasts from Statistics Canada and the Parliamentary Budget Officer. She also reviewed the demand patterns in Colorado and Washington after those states legalized recreational cannabis use. "I don't see empty shelves manifesting on the first day probably, and not the first month," she said. "But as the year progresses, what we'll see is either prices in the legal market will have to rise, or we'll actually see the supply shortage." 'Great concern' In Alberta, Angus Taylor has raced to prepare 17 retail outlets for NewLeaf Cannabis. One of his downtown Calgary stores is totally ready — display cases are full of accessories like pipes, bongs and rolling papers while a sampling station that will allow consumers to smell various strains of products is fitted with specially designed containers. But Taylor has already heard about the coming shortage from a number of suppliers. "I recently heard comments from some of the CEOs, saying that they don't expect there to be enough product in the system, and that, of course, is of great concern to us." Like Wyonch, he thinks the shortage won't happen right away. "We're concerned about the second or the third orders, when the storage facilities at the licensed producers start to get a bit bare." How much weed do we need? Accurate numbers for supply and demand of cannabis are difficult to gauge. The Evolution of an Industry: Cannabis Companies You Should Know
2016 was a great year for the legal cannabis industry.
States that legalized recreational cannabis prior to 2017 saw a huge increase in tax revenues, job creation and local economic activity. And this has resulted in a sort of “green rush,” where we’re now seeing dozens of other states begin the process of legalization in some form.
As with any new and vibrant industry, however, there are some companies that simply stand out among the rest. These are the companies that will not only prove to be huge opportunities for cannabis investors, but huge opportunities for those who advocate the legalization of cannabis as a way to instigate positive social change while building local economies.
In this series, I’ll highlight some of these companies and show you why they’ll end up being some of the most successful players in the legal cannabis industry.
Cannabis Companies to Watch: Défoncé Chocolatier
Bloomberg claims it’ll make up half the legal cannabis business.
I think it’ll be more.
I’m talking about edibles, and there is more and more data suggesting that the demand for edibles could soon outpace demand for flower. This is a very big deal, as it indicates a maturation of this consumer segment.
Gone are the days of limited options and low-quality offerings. Today, when you walk into a dispensary, you’re greeted by a vast array of flower, edibles, oils, tinctures, concentrates and whatever else these mad scientists can dream up.
But without a doubt, it’s edibles that are seeing some of the biggest growth. In fact, the good folks over at New Frontier Analytics, which monitors and manages cannabis data, have found that the growth in edibles has actually fueled much of the boom in sales we’ve seen over the past couple of years.
Dispensaries love edibles, too, as the price points on edibles tend to be higher, thereby allowing dispensaries to capture higher sales per customer.
Personally, I’m a fan of edibles. Not just as an investor, but as a consumer. I really don’t like smoking, but if I do want to enjoy the herb I can easily do so with an edible. The tough part is finding an edible that doesn’t smell like bong water or taste like sand.
No More Pot Brownies
For the past couple of years, I’ve been hit up by well over a dozen edibles manufacturers seeking early-stage capital. While I do see the huge opportunity in edibles, I’ve always turned them down. That’s not to say they were necessarily bad deals, but when it comes to edibles, I want to see more than just spreadsheets and sales projections. That stuff is important, but when it comes to edibles, I’m not interested in investing unless management is serious about quality, not just quantity.
Anybody can pump out cannabis-infused food, but it takes real skill and passion to create something that really elevates the edibles market. And quite frankly, that’s where I see the real, long-term opportunity.
As more and more states legalize, edibles consumers are going to demand more than just pot brownies. Baby boomers, stay-at-home moms, professionals—most of these folks aren’t interested in sugar-crusted jelly rings and space cakes. That stuff was fine when they were younger, with less disposable income. But today, these people are looking for more.
Défoncé Chocolatier
Défoncé Chocolatier is a maker of high-end, artisanal chocolates infused with cannabis. I was actually introduced to Défoncé by one of my contacts in Los Angeles who’s personally working with this outfit.
Now before I go any further, there’s something you have to understand about Défoncé. This is not a company making commodity chocolates for the masses. This is quality cannabis-infused chocolate that was created by a team of veteran artisans that use single-origin cannabis and gourmet chocolate.
Défoncé actually sources its chocolate from TCHO Chocolate. If you’re unfamiliar, TCHO is a high-end chocolatier in San Francisco. It sources its own cacao beans directly from farmers and controls every step of the process from fermentation and roasting through molding and packaging. And this isn’t some little mom-and-pop shop, either.
TCHO does more than $6 million a year in revenues, and its considered one of the most successful high-end chocolatiers in the world. This is not only where Défoncé sources its chocolate, but it’s also where Défoncé found some of its earliest partners.
That’s right, TCHO isn’t just a supplier, it’s a partner. And definitely worth mentioning is that TCHO CEO Louis Rossetto and President Jane Metcalfe are co-founders of Wired magazine. They know how to run a company, and these folks thought it would be a good idea to partner up with Défoncé.
In terms of where Défoncé gets its cannabis, the company sources it from Hummingbird Medicinals, which grows and raises its cannabis in the Sierra Nevada foothills, which just so happens to be the best micro-climate on Earth for sun-grown organic cannabis.
Hummingbird Medicinals uses biodynamic farming techniques that utilize complex composting methods to build soil so abundant with microbes that fertilizer is not required. This particular method also leaves the smallest footprint possible for a farm. In fact, it actually improves overall soil health. Also worth noting is that this method is effective at growing strong, vibrant plants, some of which measure up to 16 feet tall and 30 feet wide.
All quality food products begin with quality ingredients, and this is what sets Défoncé apart from every other edibles maker I’ve come in contact with. Let me explain…
First, let’s start with taste.
Défoncé’s chocolatiers are not rookies. Their careers were spent at high-end chocolate manufacturers before joining the team. As a result, they understand how to create chocolate that pairs extremely well with cannabis.
The company’s cannabis oil is actually treated with such care that it only exhibits small traces (and pleasant ones at that), of cannabis. You can actually pick up hints of rosemary and sage. That’s the cannabis, which happens to clock in at more than 85 percent cannabinoids—an exceptionally pure cannabis concentrate.
Consistency is also a very important differentiator here.
It’s nearly impossible to find dosing consistencies in edibles. In fact, Défoncé has made the only edibles product I’ve ever had the delivers stable consistency.
You see, each bar contains exactly 180 milligrams of THC. Each section of the bar contains exactly 10 milligrams. The molds have actually been custom-made to capture the chocolate in quantities and shapes that guarantee dosing for overall bars and individual sections. And just to ensure this consistency is never lost, each batch of chocolate is tested three times by CW Analytics labs in California.
Design has also helped put Défoncé in a different class of edibles.
While some may not put much thought into it, Défoncé has designed its packaging in a way that it communicates a higher caliber of edible. In fact, Mic.com, a media company that targets millennials (and enjoys a $100 million valuation), said “If Apple designed pot chocolate bars, this is what they’d look (and taste) like.”
There are a lot of edibles brands out there desperate to find a solution to the taste problem associated with edibles. Défoncé’s manufacturing secrets are protected, and management is in an excellent position to exploit that. The company just opened up a new manufacturing facility to cater to what could soon be a very significant demand.
In fact, just a couple of months ago, the company finalized a new partnership with Chong’s Choice, one of the most respected brands in the market.
Here’s what Tommy Chong had to say about the deal:
“As a swiftly growing and ambitious cannabis company, we work hard to find premium partners—companies that share our passion for cannabis, for paying meticulous attention to detail and quality, and for building thriving businesses. And in Défoncé, we know we have found a fantastic collaborator. These bars are like rectangles of munchies heaven.”
Chong’s Choice management team released the following statement”
“With this new partnership, Chong’s Choice further establishes its position as a leading cannabis brand. The current line of products, which includes pre-rolls, flowers, oil cartridges, and THC breath strips, now includes the most prestigious infused chocolate in the world. The collaboration, too, highlights Défoncé’s emergence as the most respected and sought-after manufacturer of artisanal infused chocolate in the market. The company’s line of unique chocolate bars have set the new standard in the edibles market, and its seed-to-bar approach is a national model.”
This is a very big deal as Défoncé’s first celebrity partnership is with one of the most successful celebrity brands. I suspect there will be plenty more to come.
Jeff Siegel, who’s been active in the financial publishing business since the mid-90s, works as a consultant, has been a featured guest on Fox, CNBC, and Bloomberg Asia, and is the author of the best-selling energy book, Investing in Renewable Energy: Making Money on Green Chip Stocks and is the co-author of Energy Investing for Dummies.
[Editor’s Note: Défoncé also made an appearance on our most recent list of 6 Sexiest Cannabis Chocolate Bars.]
