Favourite thing about them: I love Mako’s devotion to those he cares about, he would literally do anything for Bolin, has done. Like he comes across so cold when Korra first meets him and yet as the show goes on we see how big of a heart Mako has. The scene where Mako gives Grandma Yin his scarf - he’s just so compassionate with his actions if not his words

Least favourite thing: I have come around to the love triangle a bit in the sense that it was good character growth for everyone but, ughhhhh the season one love triangle 🤦🏻‍♀️ Mako with Asami this season was the worst! Like based on the life he’d been living up until this point I understand why his approach to dating Asami was more utilitarian then romantic (“it makes more sense with me to be with Asami”) but that doesn’t change how shitty it was. Idk I just wish Mako had actually broken up with Asami rather then making her do it but that’s the problem with people pleasing tendencies 🙄

Favourite line: “Having a little car trouble” it is so stupid, but it’s a good way to retcon his cool boy image from season 1, like after this intense chase you think oh here he is me cool guy, and then he says that and it’s like...omg he actually is a loser 🤩 ahaha. Season 1 Mako’s dialogue is very utilitarian, which makes sense he’s a closed off person, so to see some personality once he does start opening up, and to see that it is oppositional to what you would assume by his stoicism and character history as a gangster. It’s a quick way to recontextualize Mako’s character

OTP: Wuko 🥰 There is a theme in these answers aha, but Mako and Wu really help each other to grow! I love Mako and Korra but they did not fulfill each other’s emotional needs. Mako needs to feel needed as a protector- which initially he gets from Masami (“I just feel so safe with you” and there plan to save her company working for the triad) and Makorra (the show down with Armon, Mako getting them out of the blood bending grip). However, neither Asmai or Korra really want that from a relationship. Based on Wu’s response post kidnapping,(thanking Mako who literally did the least 😂), Wu is appreciative of Mako’s protective nature, which is good for Mako’s esteem. Wu’s emotional needs are not as established, only being in one season but Wu definitely needed to be grounded as a royal in reality, and Mako’s straightforwardness which can be taken as condescending by some, is appreciated by Wu. This relationship isn’t one way though, as Wu doesn’t just let Mako remain stagnant but pushes him to open up emotionally (rememberances, where mako reflects on his mistakes and wu gets him to do it by forcing him, which might seem aggressive for others but with Mako is the approach he needed) and the two work as a team with the evacuation, Wu making up for Mako’s shortcomings with interpersonal skills. Idk, whether you ship it or not these two help each other to grow so much it’s a genuinely sweet relationship

nOTP: Makorra, I already talked about this on the Korra ask, so the short version is they just aggravated each other’s insecurities and had differing emotional needs- Korra a need for emotional support/validation while Mako’s compulsive caregiving creates a need to be helpful/needed

random headcanon: Mako definitely reads cheesy detective novels, they’re so cheap at the news stand so it’s easy to justify buying them - plus all those new one liners 👀

Unpopular opinion: Mako being a favourite is pretty unpopular 😂

I guess also not being mad at him for getting back with Asami season 2? I think for both of them it was a very human thing to do, they were both at an extreme low point; Mako having recently broken up with Korra and under a lot of pressure at work having just failed a sting that was supposed to make his case, and Asami already in jeopardy of losing Future Industries taking the final hit with the robber warehouse. Idk I guess I also never thought they were dating again, just messing around??? For some people that might make it worse, and Mako did not handle Korra’s return how he should have (which he agrees with), but yeah idk this is the part of the love triangle that made the most sense- whereas Mako and Asami’s first relationship just fizzled out

Song I associate with them: Mako being a curmudgeon is something I take to heart lol, all of my 70s easy listening favs I think, yeah Mako would vibe to this. Essentially all of the music my friends make fun of me for listening too. “Want you back in my life” The Carpenters, “until you come back to me” Aretha Franklin, “lovin’ you” Minnie Riperton, songs that are old but not hipster cool- because Mako is not cool.
