Jim West's Suit
"Robert Conrad’s finely tailored Suits, featuring the smart-looking bolero jacket and colorful vest, were an important aspect of James West’s character. The fact that President Grant recruited West to serve as his agent in the field meant maintaining a convincing cover. So the government set him up to be a fancy, high-living gentleman from the East, who traveled the country at his leisure in his private railroad car. West’s classy attire went a long way toward establishing this image.
"The jacket also served a practical function: Hidden behind the left lapel was a small pocket in which West kept a picklock, and at the back of the jacket was another pocket that held a throwing knife. This jacket, along with its hidden devices, was used throughout the series.
The tight-fitting pants that matched West’s jacket posed a special problem on the series due to the extensive stunt work performed by Conrad. 'My pants, which were designed by a woman, were always splitting because they were too tight,” recalled Conrad. “They were always saying, "Okay, how many pairs of pants is he going to go through today?"'
"The seat of Conrad’s trousers bears the scars of needlework repairs—a fitting testament to the daily rough-and-tumble activities of the wild, wild West."

pump up the volume (1990)
director: allan moyle
costume designer: michael abbot
production design: robb wilson king
set dec: tina treglia (peterson)
cinematographer: walt lloyd
BEING WEIRD ISN'T ENOUGH not sure why i like this pin, but i like it.
this film takes place on the cusp between the 80s and the 90s, but i loved that these kids drove these 60s/70s(?) cars, i think to signify that they were low income and couldn't afford modern cars? but i love the atmosphere in this shot.
not the greatest screencap, but i adored everything janie (lala sloatman) wore. the cat-eye glasses, the oversized pink pearl earrings, the ponytail scarf. even though i related to nora's artsy side, i wanted to be janie.
mark (christian slater) is like two different people. at home, he wears cool retro bowling shirts embroidered with the name "dick" and sasses his parents, but at school he wears bland clothing (like he wants to blend into the background) and acts all shy.
i also just really loved mimi kennedy as mark's mom, marla, using a teacup to ash her cigarette into, i just thought it was so posh!
again, loving janie's dangly statement earrings, and the colour combo with her floral bolero (?) and sweet pink dress. i didn't love nora's (samantha mathis) outfit as much, but i was intrigued by the piece she wears over her dress. it ties at the back of her neck, and i think again on her lower back, so it's like a... halter vest? the turtle necklace is pretty dope, and though you can't see it in this shot, she is also wearing purple and white striped tights.
paige's (cheryl pollak) bedroom is a dream! the floral wallpaper and the white bed are so lovely, but the seafoam green radio really makes the colour scheme pop.
man i wish i had a teacher this cool! ellen greene as jan emerson (do they call her miss emerson in the movie? i can't remember), wears the coolest outfits, and she is introduced in this amazing mustard suit accessorized with a turquoise bolo tie! the look is amazing, but it also alerts us that this film takes place in arizona.
paige, doing her WASP thing in an oversized sweater over a blouse, with a string of pearls. it's the necklace that does it for me.
i mostly just wanted to see how many celebrities i could identify in this shot: keanu reeves, johnny depp, george michael, kirk cameron, corey haim, richard grieco... (stole this image from imdb as it was much clearer than my screenshot)
i forgot that plaid wallpaper was a thing and i think it's due for a comeback. particularly loving the plaid (shirt) on plaid (wallpaper) in this scene, so cozy, like a cabin!
so many things to love in this scene: number one, the heart curtains; number two, the kitten sweatshirt (the kittens look like they might be puffy and i can feel it in my mind); number three the "homework causes brain damage" sign on the wall--classic! number four, the clear lamp filled with gumballs? and the cow hanging from it! number five and six, the blue radio and the clear phone! i want one!
did you notice that the tissue box in the highschool staff room is the same as the tissue box in the depressed student's room? do you think it was the same box?
nora's room reminded me of my own room in highschool-- walls plastered with images, and plenty of candles. i think nora might have been one of the prototypes for the manic pixie dreamgirl.
Believe It Or Not I Care
mazz's (billy morrisette) denim and leather look is good.
an example of one of mark's drab shirts, but also nora's completely adorable velvet blouse with a peter pan collar! also, i'm learning that the next time i wear a collared shirt, i need to add a long statement necklace.
so this scene is near the end of the film, and i loved mark's shirt here. i also realized that it's more of a cooler, bolder look than he has previously worn to school, so i think it's supposed to symbolize mark coming out of his shell and revealing more of his true self at school/in public. look at me, i get things.
finally, loving this floral blouse and braided leather suspender on miss emerson. i would probably wear this.
BONUS here's a picture of drew barrymore at "an event" for pump up the volume (according to imdb), i'm assuming it's the premiere, just looking cool and badass. i need that jacket.
another bonus: this adorable promo photo of christian & samantha <3
anyways, most of these pics are my own screenshots, but you should check out higher resolution images on imdb. i couldn't find any articles about the wardrobe in this film, but i did find this 30th anniversary article that was interesting.

SAMEDI 9 MARS 2024 (Billet 2 / 3)
« BOLERO, LE MYSTERE RAVEL » (2h 00min)

Jocelyn & Orlando
Jocelyn Wright wanted to step in front of a speeding bus when she agreed to go out clubbing. Then she recalled some jokes from high school; she’d probably do more damage to the bus, or she’d just bounce off and be fine, after causing a 6.9 on the richter scale. Jocelyn was 64 inches tall and weighed 188 lbs, she’d always been fat and always teased about it. Her high school life had been so humiliating that she never went to college, despite her 3.9 GPA. She feared it would be no different from high school. This caused her to be extremely cynical about people and relationships. After a handful of jobs that allowed her to be the object of ridicule for the public she landed a job in the call center for the water department. She liked it because she was helpful to people and out of the public eye. She liked to stay at home playing video games and watching horror movies on her days off. She liked horror movies because thin attractive people would get slaughtered despite having everything going for them.
Today, however, was one of the exceptions. Once a month Jocelyn’s younger sister, Evelyn, would invite her to hang out with her and her friends. Evelyn was five years younger and 50 lbs lighter than Jocelyn, but Evelyn had an hourglass figure and a steady boyfriend. Half the time Jocelyn would either feign illness or work to avoid going, but she did that last month. And if she declined twice in a row, Evelyn would grow more persistent inviting her out every weekend. Jocelyn knew her sister’s intentions were coming from a place of love. She feared Jocelyn was locked in a trash filled apartment, drowning her sorrows with vodka and cookies. Jocelyn wasn’t a hoarder or a hikikomori; she’d just learned to reject people who only valued her as an object of mockery and disgust. So six times a year she agreed to hang out with her sister.
It was Saturday night, Jocelyn had spent the afternoon dying her curly hair blonde, and choosing an outfit. She hated to endure another scyathing critique from Evelyn and her fashion drones on what a woman her size should and should not wear. She selected a purple dress that Evelyn bought her for her birthday last year. It was one of the six days she let herself be dragged out of the house. She let her sister chose clothes for her on her birthday. She added a ¾ sleeve black bolero cardigan to cover her upper arms and not stand out so much. She had to run out to buy a pair of purple moccasins to match the dress she’d never worn before. They cost more than she hoped, but less than she expected. She’d have to wait for her next paycheck to buy Final Fantasy XV.
Her one bedroom apartment was clean and sparsely furnished, despite most people’s negative expectations. Jocelyn suspected her sister’s friends joked about the place being littered with empty pizza boxes, candy wrappers and books on weight loss and how to meet the ideal man. She hated these stereotypical perceptions but she hated their amazement that it was true even more. Like she had an obligation to be a walking cliché, and it took away from their fun when she wasn’t.
The met up at Jocelyn’s apartment because it was in a safe neighborhood with ample parking and was near the club “uroboros” they were going to. “Why didn’t I go wine tasting with them last month?” Jocelyn lamented when her doorbell rang. She knew why though. The last two times she went wine tasting with her sister and her boyfriend they attempted set Jocelyn up with a guy Derrick (Evelyn’s boyfriend) knew. The first, Tony, was repelled when he set eyes on Jocelyn and the second, Sonny, was only interested in fucking her. He even said so when they were alone, and expected her to be receptive to it.
Jocelyn stopped playing Farmville to let them in. Jocelyn had styled her hair and gotten dressed an hour earlier to get some game time in before they left. She’d left her make up undone to give the appearance that she was only now getting ready; and to give the fashion drones a chance to use their only noteworthy skill and give her make up tips. Jocelyn felt lipstick and concealer was enough, but is always criticized for being frumpy.
First was her sister, Evelyn, her straightened hair in a bun. She wore a crimson cocktail dress, a pearl necklace and red high heels. She was followed by her BFF from high school Charmaine Wilmington. Charmaine was tall and thin with enormous boobs that men fawned over. She had dark skin and straightened black hair about her shoulders. She was married to a MMA fighter currently ranked number 17 in his weight class. She wore a green cocktail dress and black gladiator boots. Her nails were painted to glow in the clubs black light.
Much to Jocelyn’s dismay, Angelica “Angie” Pettis came too. Angie was a size two blonde who felt there was nothing her looks or her daddy’s money couldn’t get her. She was picky about everything. If it didn’t meet with her approval, it was clearly bad or inferior. She liked to pretend to be self conscious of her body to keep the attention on herself. She was still single because she demanded a man who made at least a million six a year and drive a hundred thousand dollar car. She was the manager at the bank Evelyn worked at and felt she was doing them a favor by attending. She wore a white scorpion heels, a strapless dress and a mink coat. The first thing she did when she entered was sneer at Jocelyn’s cheap couch and 32 inch TV.
The usual trio was accompanied by a fourth. They introduced her as Aimee Caine, one of their coworkers. She was noticeably pale, with glasses and short brown hair. She wore a modest black skirt, a green blazer and a gold blouse. She also wore bondage boots that seemed out of place on her. She gave a meek hello before going on to examine Jocelyn’s collection of DVDs and video games.
Jocelyn and Evelyn went to the bathroom to apply make up. Angie stuck her head in to ask if Jocelyn had anything she could snack on. Jocelyn knew she wasn’t actually going to eat anything. It was just an excuse for her and Charmaine to look in her cupboards and refrigerator for the clichéd junk food they expected to find. All they’d find was an unopened pint of orange sherbert and a Hostess Snoball from eight months ago. Makeup applied, they took an uber to the club where they had drinks, Evelyn announced her engagement to Derrick, dancing, more drinks, more dancing and no guys even talked to Jocelyn.
On the ride back to her apartment, Angie complained that they didn’t put diet coke in her vodka-cokes making her gain weight, Charmaine and Evelyn complained about getting hit on too much, and Aimee silently appeared to have less fun than Jocelyn; despite her numerous claims otherwise. Grateful none of them spent the night, Jocelyn played star ocean until four in the morning before finally going to sleep.
Orlando James wanted to hang himself when he agreed to go clubbing with his friends. They usually only took him to make themselves look better by comparison, or seem less shallow and vain than they really were. Orlando was 67 inches tall and weighed 259 lbs, most of which was in his beer belly. His black hair was thinning on top and greying. He was assistant manager at the same KFC he'd worked at since his senior year of high school. He didn’t mind going out, unless it was to pick up women. He’d had no luck with women, having only kissed a girl once during a drunken game of truth or dare.
He only agreed to go because if he didn’t, it’d only be a matter of time before they lied to him about where they were going just to thrust him into an environment to hit on women. He didn’t mind rejection, he was far too used to it. What he minded was the insults and the belittling that sometimes accompanied the rejections. A polite “no” or simply worded rejection would suffice. But some women had to mock his weight, hurl profanity at him and/or feign offense at being hit on by an ugly loser. Like it lessened their being by him speaking to them.
He’d been fed platitudes like “all you need is confidence.” and “eventually one has to say yes” since high school but life had proven otherwise. Some years ago he simply stopped trying, devoting his life to video games and anime. His friends claimed his cynicism was just a juvenile defense mechanism, but it was an equal and opposite reaction to his reality. Sometimes he wondered what the difference between insanity and perseverance was.
His friends were from high school, fellow geeks like him. Though most of them changed their images after graduation. They acclimated well, but Orlando remained the same clichéd geek he was in high school. His friends said this was the primary reason he could land a woman. And he should just pretend to be “normal” before geeking out in front of a girl. Orlando countered with if he was that good of an actor he would’ve been in the drama club instead of the chess club.
It was Saturday night, and Orlando had been playing World Of Warcraft for three hours and 34 minutes when hard knocking on his door reminded him he was suppose to go out tonight. He opened the door and let them in. Duncan Riggs was Orlando’s best friend since middle school, they even worked at KFC together while Duncan went to college. Duncan was tall and lanky with black hair, slicked back. He wore navy blue slacks with matching sports coat and a lavender collared shirt. He worked in the IT department at city hall. He claimed there was never a shortage of hot women to hit on.
Following him was Angelo Flores, who was in chess club with Orlando. He was short and chubby, but had a handsome face. He favored actor Alfred Enoch, but just in the face and hair. He was a sports reporter and envious of their lifestyles. So he dressed, the part and drove a BMW, despite living in an one bedroom apartment just as cheap as Orlando’s. Angelo’s complex was gated and had a nicer paint job. His entire outfit was by Ed Hardy.
Accompanying them was Martin Hatcher, a former KFC employee who lost 75 lbs after joining a local gym and became a personal trainer. He remained friends with Orlando because of their shared love for Call Of Duty. He wore a grey turtleneck and off black slacks. He also wore a silver cross. He had a bald head and a professionally groomed beard.
They were aghast that Orlando wasn’t ready, but took the opportunity to pick out his outfit. They chose a red, white and blue checkered shirt Orlando had never worn because he thought it was hideous; and a pair of brown slacks he hadn’t worn in four years because he felt they were too small. The four took an uber to a club called “uroboros”.
Orlando tried to talk to three women. The first was a cute brunette who politely said she wasn’t interested. The second was a dark skinned model type who looked offended he dared to talk to her. And the third was a chubby brunette who told him,
“I understand your friends dragged you out and put you up to this, but you should really hit on women in your league.” she paused to look around and added, “Doesn’t look like there are any here though.” 28 minutes later, on his way to the toilet, he saw the third girl with two of her friends. When she saw him she whispered to her friends, pointed and the three shared a big laugh.
An hour before last call, Orlando was sitting at a table nursing a MGD thinking about the anime he could’ve watched if he simply stayed home when his three friends joined him. They were trying to encourage Orlando to not give up when Angelo said,
“Bro, check ‘er out. Blonde, purple dress, at my seven o’clock. Total BBW”
They gave her a quick look and Martin said,
“Yeah, you should like, totally talk to her Orlando.”
“No way.” Orlando replied, “She’s totally out of my league.”
“C’mon,”Duncan urged, “she’s sitting there, by herself, just waiting for some guy to talk to her.”
“Go f’r it bro! Aye, you nuttin to lose.” Angelo's joke was lost on none. Their pleads and encouragement blended together and it was obvious they weren’t going to stop until he agreed, so he did. He stood up and walked towards her.
As he walked, he began to think about the possibilities. She probably was there with her boyfriend who liked to leave his woman alone so pathetic losers like him would hit on her and he could beat the crap out of them. Maybe she was a lesbian or feminist looking to spew verbal venom at any male who felt entitled to her company. She was probably friends with the kind of women who would chastise him for thinking their friend was so desperate a “guy like him” would have a chance. What kind of women were into guys like him any how? None according to his profiles on five different dating sites. No,he could tell by the expression on her face that the last thing on the planet she wanted was to be bothered by a fat loser such as himself. She’d attract some buff stud with a six figure salary and a sports car. All that awaited him at that table was a polite rejection at best, and a drink thrown in his face at worst. He walked past her and out to the smoking area.
On the ride home the trio spent the entire time pointing out the numerous hot women who were there that he should've hit on. Especially the blonde in the purple dress. Orlando listened just enough to hide the facts that he’d heard it all before and couldn’t care less. They didn’t know, they couldn’t understand, they’d never understand. To them if you flip a coin fifty times, it eventually has to land on tails no matter how many times it lands on heads. But to Orlando, if you flip a coin fifty times and it lands on heads fifty times, it means it didn’t land on tails fifty times. And it’s not going to land on tails. All observable evidence will tell it’s not going to land on tails. Scientists would hypothesize there must be something wrong with the coin.
Orlando entered his apartment, grateful none of his friends needed to stay the night. That allowed him to play Star Ocean until four o’clock in the morning before going to sleep.

Yes that's right, the clothes mum and granny wore in their hey-day could have you after a few minor alterations be the envy of all your friends. A rummage in the closet of the grey haired or blue rinse relative can save you time and money.
Revival of fashion rejuvenates from flower power hippie bell bottoms into flares. The bolero jacket turns box coat Ladies Brooch, and back on the scene with vengeance the pointed shoe once referred to as the "winkle picker," oh and not forgetting the square toed "chisel".
I ask who is responsible for such unappealing names. Mind you back in the days of the Beatles the mention of winkle picker was so desirable it was like music to your ears. In reality chic trendy fashion items are not changing with the times - only the name.
Being fashionable is not about designer labels but the actual design of the outfit itself. The style layout is fashion and not the designer. Think about it, Versace and Gucci have been around for years so nothing fresh or new here, only what they create.
The huge demand for fake designer labels is saving the fashion conscious a lot of money. Why pay through the nose for something you cannot see or the person you wish to impress. Designer tags are sewn on the inside of most garments. Is there a reason for this? Could it be the shame of charging extortionate prices?
Save pennies today and salvage moms clothing donation for the local jumble sale. Bargain buys come in a multitude of choice from local charity shops and car boot sales. Some folk embarrass easily over wearing another`s cast offs (second hand) and this is understandable.
If you can swallow your pride then a cycle wash with fabric softener will have the garment smelling fresh and looking like new leaving you with spare coppers in your pocket. Remember not all items for sale in second hand shops, are second hand.
Why not consider designing your own clothes and create a new image for yourself. Set your own trend/style. Fashion is determined by your way of thinking. If you think something is nice you wear it and vice versa.
In saying that we have those regardless of how hideous they look in an outfit continues to strut the walk looking like a freak. If you follow particular fashion behaviors then make sure they complement "you" and your shape. If you choose to ignore this advice then be warned.
Take heed of the fashion reminder "What goes around comes around" Remember moms' clothes were once chic and fashionable so why not again. Fashion is about attitude and if positive is in there somewhere, better still for recreating. If the golden oldies attire is not for you then try spice up other garments regardless of which person it belongs too.

I found someone on Twitter that did a loop of one of the giggles from the RS interview. Pure gold.
I love it when the detectives get to work to figure out the connection in the songs and what has been said in the past to confirm a narrative. Okay, here is what is up—I am a taymess right now, this permanent smile sitting here in a fluffy state of connection yet a longing, if that even comes close, that has turned into something newly to be defined. In some ways the concept of matter and subjective reality have merged into I don’t even know how to say it. All of the stuff happening yesterday it made everything get all dense in energetic terms because of sb’s selfish motives. The out cry has been simply a beauty to behold. That only lasted so long as your soft, yet forceful voice is even more omnipresent( I love how you take control, mmmm) Oh my goodness do I love it so much, my breath flows in out in unison with your call. The waves that keep coming over are so joyously intense. All I can think about is holding you in an embrace at once so sensual, yet a natural state of being. How does one explain the power of just having my forehead lean against yours? The feelings from the night before RS article and Saturday night keep becoming clearer and more intense. While the states are starting to close around us again, (bad, bad joke back then) my goal keeps to figure out how to make this happen, to get beyond my scars from the times where fear took control or I was politely rebuffed(for good reason). During the rep time I was so naive, but in not knowing about all of the back story or much of the story for that matter, there was a clarity of purpose and a ““be damned what anyone else thinks” that pervaded everything I did. Saturday night reminded me of how we both were touched and moved by the purity of who both really are underneath all of it. There is nothing to prove when one is in harmony with their natural state. This is the most important and honest truth that I can ever express in words. Verifiable facts of this life and love. Since that time, which came up in all it loveliness the other night, I have come to find the person to love in whom I had treated as some kind of heavenly body that I was on the mission of a lifetime to help, yet unworthy to be a partner. In holding you, this lovely human being with frailties, innumerable musical talents, anxieties, joys, cats, immense caring, a beauty that is beyond my words, and a scars that you readily spoken, it is hard for me to believe that someone so special believes in me so much and for so damn long. It is only with this past trip that my vessel has been healed enough to really start to refill with goodness and love. I feel this overwhelming kinship and love to you that is outside of space and time, not to mention this thing we have from miles away that since this summer that is amazing and simply hot🔥. You know I thought it was all in my head until one of the trips in spring or early summer when there was no denying what was happening, after George Floyd something changed. One of the days I came over, I was a total wreck because the night before, it was a Sunday, there was no sleep at all, too much busy all night. I am only perfectly content in this empty house because, in energetic reality, I am not alone as you are here with me in so many ways. Even when I get you all riled up by sticking foot in mouth or incessantly talking about myself, I still know deep down that you care and see me. I see all of things that the RS article represented either in what Paul said about his life, the things you said, or how your whole esthetic has changed during this folkloric cycle. It was only days before the article that I started having visions with a teeny tiny blonde in a car seat a row back in a big rig. I had become used to seeding visions and preparing for the day that I was no longer needed. Raising the vibration of self love to a higher state has opened me to the one person that always keeps me in this perpetual state of yumminess. I know all of the red carpet looks, stage performances, insta things, and all the or stuff is made to create an image. In MA movie and the Man MV you laid it all out pretty bare, so I do not keep the billowing bolero sleeves of the Time 100 dress as the everyday reality. I love the cut offs, the pajamas, heck all of you. It takes unique and special people to be able to be at a standstill for long periods, then go full tilt for months on end—I am all for it and thrive on both scenarios. Saturday was like this kind of truth serum where all the things that needed to be expressed were said, I understand so much more than I can say here. Sending all of my love to you. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
eternal love,
james

Habana: a nostalgic paradise
To remember the island is to return to the past and smile. Museums, squares, beaches and bars are accomplices of a trip full of emotions. Cuba, a destiny to open the mind and the heart.
It is common to prepare before a trip, read a little of its history, know its currency, the characteristics of its inhabitants and the most attractive tourist destinations. Upon arrival, the brain is modified, we are more awake and have a greater sensitivity.
According to experts, travel through the senses, according to the experiences lived, such as touch and interception, the sounds of nature, languages, dialects, etc., taste (new food, therefore, new flavors) or vision, as well as the perception of many previously unknown stimuli.
When we land in Cuba everything changes, our brain, our emotions, our world, our perceptions. No matter how much was read, how much has been seen or heard, Cuba is a destination not only to have an open mind, but also for the heart.
"The Cuba of today is a curious mixture of tropical paradise and evocative nostalgia," thus begins the documentary series Cuba libre. Stories, history, white beaches with crystal clear water, colorful house, others destroyed. Nostalgia, melancholy, extremes. Salsa, bolero and son. Memories, art, colonial beauty, love of the countryside, old cars. Blue, the sky and the sea; red the rest, cigars and rum.
There is nothing to do with others, it is contradictory. This is Havana, a world of contrasts, a giant museum, an open-air bookstore, a cafe where the best. One does not know what to find. The breeze transmits sounds, lullabies and stories of a Havana full of beauty, but also of melancholy.
Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, is the best example of colonial architecture on the island and in the Caribbean. Here you will find some of the most beautiful colonial buildings, fortresses and historical monuments of the time, as well as several of the most famous hotels and restaurants.
Unlike the typical colonial cities, Havana was in a single, four main squares: the Plaza de Armas, which was the military and defensive center to have a fortress and a large courtyard used for military parades; the Plaza de la Catedral, used as a religious center -all are the church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception of Havana, the Baroque style and the construction between the 18th and 19th centuries-; the Old Square, which was the commercial axis when it housed an important market; and the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís.
Travel to Havana is lost in time, rebuild the memory and imagine dozens of stories in every corner, on every street, in every house in dreams, in a bolero or a child. Old Havana has a large number of museums. The Museo Maqueta of Old Havana is a must to get a global view of this wonderful area. The Museum of the City, the Museum of Navigation, the Museum of the Royal Force, the Museum of Rum. The Museum of Colonial Art, the Museum of the Revolution and the Casa Natal Museum of José Martí, the other of the recommended ones. The list continues
The Bodeguita del Medio, La Floridita and the Ambos Mundos hotel, so closely related to the writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway, are other places that transmit their history, with their stories. Taking a Mojito, a daiquiri, in the same bar where the Nobel Prize for Literature made it, allows you to fly and transport your imagination to another era.
A walk along the pier that ends up looking at one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Caribbean, a tour of the Paseo del Prado or the Capitol, other attractions of the capital of Cuba. You can reach everyone walking, the distances are short, there are music and stories in every corner. The Cubans smile, the tourists responded in the same way.
The Plaza de la Revolución, another that reaches the deepest of the senses, is one of the largest in the world, with 72,000 square meters. There is the monument to José Martí sculpted by Juan José Sicre and in front of the Ministry of the Interior with the image of Mrs. Che Guevara, the work of Enrique Ávila, which says "Hasta la victoria siempre". In 2009, Camilo Cienfuegos, another hero of the Cuban Revolution, opened the work of the same artist and the technical specifications.
Walking around Havana is already a great attraction. The daily life of this city surprises all the streets, children playing baseball, itinerant troubadours, a man trying to start his 1955 Plymouth, another who smokes his cigar, women singing, tourists photographing. The habaneros, a difference of the locals from other parts of the world, not only survive, but they create, they create, they debate and they live with an incredible passion.

New Skoda Octavia Estate 1.5 petrol 2017 review
Image 1 of 13 Image 1 of 13 13 Oct, 2017 5:45pm James Brodie We try the facelifted Skoda Octavia Estate with the brand's new 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine This has been a big year for the Skoda Octavia. The Czech sister model to the Volkswagen Golf and SEAT Leon won Estate Car of the Year at our 2017 New Car Awards, and it’s also been on the receiving end of a facelift, introducing a minor design refresh, new technology and also new engines. It’s out with the 1.4-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol, and in with the VW Group’s latest 1.5-litre unit. The 148bhp power figure is the same as before, as is the 250Nm of torque. But performance has increased on paper; the car is now three tenths faster from 0-62mph, taking eight seconds, and the top speed increases slightly to 136mph. • Best estate cars on the market However, the new 1.5-litre engine’s real party trick is the additional refinement and fuel economy it delivers. We’d always recommend the 2.0-litre TDI for real load-lugging, but the smoothness displayed by the 1.5 petrol means it’s a compelling package for family motoring. It’s punchy, making the most of the generous torque on offer to deliver reliable and linear performance, so it’s well suited to overtaking and motorway driving. Image 2 of 13 Image 2 of 13 The 1.5-litre TSI boasts two new technologies over the outgoing 1.4. A stop/ start system is fitted, shutting down the engine at standstill, and it also features cylinder deactivation. When suitable, the new engine can cruise along on two cylinders only, unlocking a claimed 56.6mpg. In real-world conditions it’s possible to break the 40mpg barrier, while 115g/km CO2 emissions mean the 1.5 slots into the 20 per cent Benefit-in-Kind band for 2016-17. The revamped power unit is impressively refined. Standing on the accelerator pedal coaxes out a smooth, muffled drone, and it barely raises its voice under slower driving. It’s hooked up to a snappy six-speed manual gearbox, and while the steering isn’t razor sharp, it’s well judged for a car of this class. The ride itself is comfortable at all speeds, even on the optional 18-inch alloys fitted to our test car. SE models come as standard with 16-inch rims, though, which would be even more comfortable. Image 4 of 13 Image 4 of 13 The cabin is unremarkable but functional. Soft-touch plastics are found at arm’s height, yet hard and scratchy materials are present if you go looking for them. Our SE car was equipped with the mid-spec eight-inch Bolero infotainment system. While this is large, bright and easy to use once warmed up, and furnished with DAB, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, there’s no satellite navigation. This will cost you another £750 from the options list. The Octavia Estate boasts a 610-litre boot with all the seats in place, expanding to a 1,740-litre loading bay when the rear bench is folded flat. While this can’t quite match class leader the Peugeot 308 SW, it does mean that Skoda’s offering is the most practical member of the VW Group trio, bettering the Leon ST and Golf Estate. It offers better value for money, too. The SEAT is style focused and the VW has a higher-quality feel, but for pure penny pinching the Octavia Estate is the cheapest on paper, undercutting both rivals on list price as well as monthly deals – the latter thanks to a £3,000 PCP deposit contribution. 5 The Octavia Estate is neither stylish nor glamorous, but it does the job of being a small family estate car superbly thanks to a combination of no-nonsense practicality, value and decent driving manners. The new 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine under the bonnet is a revelation, delivering smooth but punchy power, and it’s linked to a solid gearshift. The chassis is comfortable in everyday use, too. Model: Skoda Octavia Estate SE 1.5 TSI Price: £21,030 Engine: 1.5-litre 4cyl turbo petrol Power/torque: 148bhp/250Nm Transmission: Six-speed manual, front-wheel drive 0-62mph: 8.0 seconds Top speed: 136mph Economy/CO2: 56.6mpg/115g/km On sale: Now
