1. I'm planning to make guacamole after my trip to the grocery store. Hopefully I can get some ripe avocados so I can actually make guac today.

2. I was planning to do separate Westley and Buttercup portraits today but idk. Hopefully I can at least get the sketch step done and paint tomorrow.

3. Maybe I'll paint my nails and watch a comfort movie. Its way too hot and humid to be outside.

AU where Dean is the Michael Sword but meaning that he’s actually genuinely an angelic weapon given human form

"Am I even human?" Dean wants to sound angry - he wants to sound furious - but his words come out as broken as he feels inside.

Cas says nothing for such a long time that Dean nearly tells him to just go, but before he can spit the words out, Cas stiffly climbs up next to him and joins him on Baby's hood.

All the fight deflates out of Dean in an instant.

A Fallen Angel and an Angel's Sword sit side by side on a car in the middle of the night. It sounds like the worst set up to an even worse punchline.

"Guess I've got more in common with you than I have with either of them..." Dean says bitterly, gesturing back at Bobby's house.

Cas clasps his hands neatly over his knees and sighs. "Dean, do you know why the Michael Sword is so powerful?"

"I dunno, 'cause I'm awesome?"

Cas throws him such a flat look that Dean can't help the tiny smile it brings out him. It fades quickly.

Cas jabs him in the shoulder - the same shoulder the handprint is on - and it lances a jolt of something electric down his spine.

"Wh- hey!" Dean swats Cas's finger away and rubs at his shoulder, hoping Cas won't notice the red blooming on his face in the dark.

"Listen to me, Dean. The Michael Sword is so strong because it's powered by a human soul - it's own human soul - yours. You have flesh and blood. You have thoughts and feelings. You are human."

Dean feels the full intensity of Cas's gaze as it's directed at him, and he is powerless to turn away. He's caught by blue eyes and an earnestness he's never seen in Cas's expression before.

"You're stubborn, you're defensive, impulsive, brave, selfless- you're the most human person I know," Cas adds, something catching in his usually stoic voice.

Dean huffs out a startled laugh. "The most human person you know..." he repeats, amusement and affection spreading like warmth through his whole body. He clears his throat. "Thanks, Cas."

"Besides," Cas rumbles, a note of pride slipping in, "I rebuilt your entire body myself, so I know for a fact that it is chemically and biologically identical to a regular human body."

Dean loudly snorts another laugh. "See, now you've just made it weird."

Cas reaches over and gently holds Dean's hand, palm up, in his own. The move is so unexpected that Dean's brain appears to go immediately offline and all he can do is suck in a quiet breath.

Cas moves his fingers gently, one by one, and presses onto the pads of his fingertips, while Dean can hear his own heartbeat between his ears.

"Uh-" Dean finally manages. Great. Nice. Useful.

"It may be difficult to understand, but you are as much this man of flesh and blood as you are Angelic steel," Cas says gently. His fingers continue to press across Dean's hand, as if now he's started he can't stop. "I've noticed that you are a very tactile person, and you respond well to touch. I'm attempting to ground you in this moment. Is it working?"

Dean wants to immediately deny it and snatch his hand back, but he pushes down the reflex and watches Cas trace the lines across his calloused palm. He takes a deep breath. "Yeah."

Cas doesn't let go and Dean doesn't pull away.

When the experience starts to feel too much Dean weaves their fingers together and looks up at the stars, knowing Cas will be able to feel how sweaty his palm is, and can probably hear the way his heart is slamming against his ribcage.

"Am I at least cool looking, as a sword?" Dean eventually asks, breaking the silence. He turns back to Cas and throws him a small grin.

Cas's eyes roam across his face, almost seeming to bore into him like he can see beneath his flesh. Maybe he can.

"Yes, Dean," Cas replies, the ghost of a smile twitching at the corner of his lips, "you always look 'cool'."

Conversation the second. Stop saying interesting stuff, guys! Lol.

@ilarual Full agree. I think what the audience wanted to see was Dean groveling about Jack (which isn't fair either). Like how Dean can't seem to talk about Lisa and Ben, and like how he had to leave the room when Claire was becoming a werewolf, this kind of loss is something he struggles to acknowledge and put words to. It's simply part of a consistent pattern for Dean.

That said, I do think they have conversations that we are not privy to offscreen! Clearly, there's some kind of heavy, heavy understanding going on between them in The Gamblers:

@ironworked I agree with that, because the qualifiers at the beginning sounds like an answer to an unspoken request. It's, "Of course I forgive you." As for Dean's anger issues, yes, he has every right to be angry about the situation. That he's backtracking on his own anger and frustration is partially going to be an issue IMHO because he needs to feel it.

Anger is an important emotion, and it's especially understandable in the context of an interfamilial murder where the victim (his mom) is victim-blamed by the perpetrator (Jack). It he doesn't let himself feel it or worse, thinks he shouldn't feel it, it'll fester.

But! Some things were out of bounds! Like his treatment of Cas and offering up Cas as muscle to Belphegor in Hell. Granted, they were all acting as weapons, and Dean had a risky job, too. But still...what a mess! It's a tightrope walk. Denial-Anger-Bargaining phases of grief, perhaps.

And yes, yes.

Tangent//Aside//

You made me think of something else I was pondering. It's unrelated to your commentary, but I see some people become very frustrated by Sam and Dean running off to Alaska on a case in season 15. And, well. No one runs off to bumfuck nowhere and goes radio silent more than Cas himself, haha. It doesn't even seem to bother him that Dean did that. If Dean was trying to give him a taste of his own medicine, it didn't work.

Another thing that jumps out at me, in addition to this instance of Dean perhaps, "giving Cas a taste of his own medicine re:Alaska," is the Amara meeting. I don't know if I can find the pictures, but the optics of the Amara-Dean and the Anael-Cas meeting are so similar. Even the establishing shots are parallel. They're both at diners with snow!

These aren't a great one-to-one example below, but if you get a chance to view the episodes again soon, it's a nice little parallel you can watch for!

I think it's a great temperature test to see how the audience reacts to Dean doing these things in comparison to Cas doing the same things in season 14, or if they even notice at all! Frankly, Cas didn't tell Dean about Anael or running off, so technically, at least Dean was open about his plans (and Sam left a note). Can you imagine the audience reaction had Dean had taken Amara...ruby red earrings?! They're a romantic-coded gift! :O

Again, I think it's because I afforded Cas more respect that I let him slide. It's really not fair of me, but it is what it is. I came around. :-)

Yes, I think the broken tapedeck in The Spear, which comes right after Byzantium is actually symbolic of Cas pulling away. Plus, he's lying to Dean, and that makes him uneasy. Dean is good at clocking his discomfort, so I can imagine Cas being more withdrawn/quiet too, soas not to tip him off.

#cas has never been great at communicating but he gets s6 levels of worse after jack's 1st death. i think he pulls back from dean on purpose#he's probably over-compensating but he's scared of being dragged away from his family#cas lies abt the deal ostensibly to protect his family but he KEEPS lying (to dean especially) because he needs a layer of distance or risk#becoming too happy#does this make any sense?

And yes, I agree that Cas is abso-fuckin-lutely afraid of being dragged away from his human family, especially when they need him. I think back to that awful confrontation with Amara in the woods season 11: She called him out that he was actually terrified to die.

I suspect that's kinda new for Cas, as a Heavenly soldier. In season 10, we saw that he counts himself as "someone you love," to Dean. He is scared to leave them, and he doesn't want to hurt them in turn. Plus, all the depression stuff, ofc, but it's got new layers to it now that he has a human family.

Here in season 14, he also doesn't want to distract them from the AU Michael mission. After 14x09 The Spear, he definitely doesn't want Dean to find out, because it could jeopardize Dean's containment of AU Michael! It's a mess.

I don't think in this case it wasn't just about him needing distance, though that certainly would've been the end result had it gone on longer. In this case, I can't even think of a single instance between Byzantium and the rest where either AU Michael wasn't a problem for them, or possessing Dean again and sending monsters after them, or in danger of getting out of Dean's head. And after that, Jack's soul was an issue.

God, there really wasn't even any time to breathe when you look back on it! No space to carve out a little happiness except maybe their car ride to the Recycling Plant to get the spear in 14x09! The rest was looming suicide and soullessness and then Mary's death! Yikes!

It's fascinating to me how much I've changed my mind about Dean in The Trap. I'm waaaaay more sympathetic to the whole Cas-being-forgiven aspect of it, because yes, Cas apologized initially, but the root of the issue was Cas's painful withdrawal of his partnership and his withholding of critical information. Full stop. He and Dean are NOT equally culpable in this one.

It's not just about Mary and Jack, and yet Cas keeps pivoting to "Dean blaming him for Mary." Which oversimplifies the whole thing in a terrible way. Yes, they're all culpable, and yes they all saw that things were wrong with Jack, but next to Donatello, Cas is THE authority on souls and physically the strongest of TFW. To make matters worse, he all but demanded Dean to parent Jack and take care of Jack's emotions, even though Dean expressed discomfort over his memories of soulless Sam. Dean has repeatedly expressed how he wants Cas to be open and honest with him, especially now that they're co-parenting, and although Cas demanded Dean parent Jack, he then turned around and hid Big Parenting Stuff from him and went off to meet Anael.

Barring Cas's one feeble and poorly-timed, "I tried to fix it on my own because I was afraid of losing this family," he doesn't really spell out his part in the communication failures or apologize very well for withdrawing from Dean, specifically. He sorts of sulls up and say, "I already apologized and I'm not doing it again." Yet, Cas has a continued, longstanding pattern of withdrawal from the partnership. I'm floored that my Cas goggles kept me from seeing it before, and maybe I'm a little embarrassed, too. I mean, honestly, it's amazing that Dean takes him back at all. :/ Once you look past, "Oh no! Dean said mean things!" anyway.

I think by The Trap, Dean has given up trying to get Cas to change or hold him accountable for his lack of communication. Cas sort of gave Dean ultimatums over it, if you squint, and Dean rolled over. And Dean wants to get back together. He needs Cas's support and Cas need his. He looks at everything Cas is and decides that Cas's avoidance and want to protect the family is just woven into the fabric of him, and Dean decides to accept that. It's something he loves about him as much as he resents it. Cas's chivalry is a feature and a bug. Dean loves him for it. It makes his life a Hell sometimes.

Occasionally, I still see people harping on how horrible Dean was for "forgiving" Cas, like Cas doesn't need to be forgiven. And with some distance and clarity, I find that pretty baffling now, but I also remember feeling that way when I wasn't looking at their partnership equally and giving Cas too much leeway on his continued absence from the partnership. I almost...respected Cas more. That thought makes me wince. But his bad decisions I was way more likely to stamp as protective or tactically genius, at least compared to some of Dean's similar decisions. Dean's things I tended to group as "too angry/emotional/irrational." :(

I guess I've come a long way when it comes to holding Sam and Cas accountable for their actions, too. Much of the time, my issues with Dean devolved to unfortunate tone policing or not liking him to express his anger and be angry at his boundaries being breached over and over, even when he was taking his anger out on inanimate objects. I balked just because it made a loud sound that made Sam wince (oh noes, not the wincing).

On the other hand, I'm quite impressed that Dean and Cas were finding their way back to each other after the Death of a Child. That's about the hardest thing a marriage can go through, and they were getting back together and trying to heal even before Jack reappeared. Clearly, it's a stress-tested relationship. WAY more stress-tested than your everyday marriages; they've been through multiple apocalypses. On the whole, they often have good communication, even when they disagree, they knew where they stood (like with Donatello). It's just these huge, incredibly unusual horrible earth-shatteringly terrible things that throw them. Chuck's grooming is such a bitch.

The Empty and its Entity are certainly interesting, and I think they also represent the concept of the individual mind, with all its nightmares, traumas, and regrets.

(Dean's mind is portrayed similarly to a Big Empty in Nihilism).

To me this symbolic horror of separation can certainly function as a God, but it also calls to mind cosmic things like the Boötes Void, too. It makes sense that Dean's mind would look like a horror motif of absence and separation. It's what he's most afraid of, abandonment and rejection. Even Rocky's Bar represented a horror of emptiness and separation.

It's Dean's contentedness, but not his happiness. It's a symbolic coworkers' bar and a symbolic roadhouse for road warriors. At this point, it's all Dean's ever dared hope for. The real happiness is hidden from view, "Why do you want what you can't have?" the subconscious-Pamela taunts.

Rocky's Bar is the promise of working alongside friends and coworkers, even when he retires, he can be close to everyone. His real happiness probably lives elsewhere, in one of his "Dean" domains, either the bunker's kitchen or his own bedroom, both of which would likely be much too revealing for live television.

But in Nihilism, even the coworkers' bar is drying up and haunted by emptiness!

DEAN: Well, sorry you wasted your trip out here, but, um...Rocky's still isn't for sale. WOMAN: (looking around the bar) Rocky's looks pretty dead. It's a very generous offer. DEAN: Well, all the same, this bar? I've never had anything this nice. So that sale that you want so bad, well, it's just not gonna happen.

The bar is empty.

So yeah. Now that you mention it, The Empty is an inevitable, powerful God in that sense! (We as viewers are Gods, too, at least in this analogy. Or at the very least, worshippers.) When we watch the show, there is Being, but when it Fades to Black, as it inevitably will, that's the Empty.

Chuck is probably representative of the showrunners, too, who are powerful but powerless in the face of bigger things. I think the "true" God of SPN is probably, like you say wisdom/meaning/understanding, as well as the grace to accept our mistakes and keep fighting for one another as we move forward.

God simply represents being and deriving meaning for it, not nihilism. Nihilism/cynicism is the true Bad Guy of Supernatural.

I like your supposition that Chuck, as a false entity of power and control, wanted to squash that awakening wisdom and truth (Yes, like 15x18 as The Truth) as much as he sought to squash the Jack-Dean-Cas family unit.

One of the things I love pondering on the Chuck Won Theory is if this mutated Thing we're calling God is a Force or a Person?

What if that sniveling, crying mess left behind in the woods is just Chuck, and he's now like Nick, and he can't quite tell exactly who he is anymore. Was he God, or wasn't he? Where did that thing end and he begin?

CHUCK: This... This... This is why you're my favorites. You know, for the first time, I have no idea what happens next. Is this where you kill me? I mean, I could never think of an ending where I lose. But this, after everything that I've done to you... to die at the hands of Sam Winchester... Of Dean Winchester, the ultimate killer... It's kind of glorious.

Maybe he has no idea because he's finally free of that Force. That's the whole point. It's GONE.

The unstoppable Force of the narrative, preset and predestined, lives in Jack now. Chuck just wanted to finally be free, and maybe he was content to die for that freedom at the hands of a worthy executioner. He's a showrunner turning in his work badge, now at the mercy of the network.

SAM: (to Chuck) Then I think it's the ending where you're just like us and like all the other humans you forgot about. DEAN: It's the ending where you grow old, you get sick, and you just die. SAM: And no one cares. And no one remembers you. You're just forgotten. CHUCK: Guys... Guys... wait. Sam, Dean and Jack get into the Impala and drive off. CHUCK: Guys... Guys! No, wait. G-Guys... Guys, wait! Guys, wait! Guys, wait! Wait, wait, wait! Please wait! Guys!

Maybe they're just punishing the shell that is Chuck, and here as he screams wait, it's not just the grief talking. But Chuck is realizing his own bereavement. He is become like Naomi-who-cried-Wolf. He made himself so untrustworthy that he can't even get through to the boys to sound the alarm.

He’s belatedly realizing that Jack is shackled and doomed to be overtaken by that overwhelming power, covered up and wallpapered, just as Chuck the man (Nephilim?) was. (Just as Castiel was, despite beginning with noble intentions.) Now Jack is an open, unshackled mark. As Amara had her mark of Darkness, now too Chuck has passed on His mark of light to Jack.

I like to think that, after he left Sam & Dean, Jack-God went back to those woods. Right after this, he comes up chipperly to deliver the killing blow to Chuck, so that Chuck could never tell. And Chuck becomes like Metatron was to Amara, standing up defiantly to God for the first and only time.

JACK-GOD: Maybe Dean won't kill you, but I will. CHUCK SHURLEY: Spare them. JACK-GOD: Eh. Maybe one of them. Sam, I think. (Chuck looks on in horror) JACK-GOD: Hey, kid. You're the one who wrote it that way. Don't blame me. (Chuck can't speak; he's choking now as he lifts into the air) JACK-GOD: Shame about your body getting destroyed and all. I really, you know, liked living in it. At least this gift... (points at his face) ...is super cute. Maybe even a little cuter. But yeah. I can't risk anyone finding you after I (makes a throat motion and a CHHKK noise). You understand.

It's no secret that this is the Destiel website and I am a Destiel girlie. For years I've wanted to host an event that would let us come together to celebrate Dean & Cas and their queerness. This June seems the perfect time to finally commit to it! 

I know the Destiel fandom hasn't had it easy over the years - we've been called many things from delusional to perverted but the truth is that Dean & Cas' love is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated, openly and fiercly!  So let's celebrate! 💚💙
