10. Worst part of fanon? I answered this question previously by explaining my personal dislike for visibly biracial Alistair. So in the interest of maintaining my sodium levels, I've chosen a different bugbear for today: Hawke. While Hawke is obviously the most developed of the player characters, I feel like sometimes people forget that others play these games differently to them (or indeed, differently between their own runs), and I find it frustrating when people making assumptions and generalisations based upon their own Hawke, especially where other canonical options are possible. As one can imagine, this comes up especially frequently with mage discourse: everyone acts like Hawke (and especially a mage Hawke) is pro-mage. Given my most recent DA2 playthrough was with a self-loathing mage Hawke, I find this very amusing lol. 22. Favourite part that everyone ignores I have already waxed lyrical about my love of Chantry history, so I think my second-favourite, more specific part, is how Arl Eamon has two dads. Ostensibly due to a continuity error between The Stolen Throne (featuring Rendorn Guerrin) and Inquisition (featuring Fort Connor, who Eamon named after his dad), word of God decided to just. Run with two dads thing which I think is very neat. I think it is also particularly noteworthy how Howe also has a similar background... given all the history of polyamory in Fereldan history, I am a Fereldan polyamory truther. (This is also relevant to my Maric/Loghain/Rowan agenda 😌) 25. Fandom complaint that you're tired of hearing I've previously mentioned my frustration with the complaints about Dreadwolf and its development time, so I guess another thing that annoys me is how people complain about how toxic the fandom is. Not to downplay any of the awful harassment campaigns that have happened in the past, but in my personal experience, Dragon Age fandom is unfortunately not unique in this regard. What I prefer about it compared to some other fandoms I've been in the past is that it is just so large that it feels like I'm never ever going to even entirely plumb the depths of fanworks of my blorbos, let alone what I might encounter should I branch out even further! Of course, that does mean there's a lot more awful background noise to tune out, but I'm fortunate to be at a place with myself in life where I can tune it out with relative ease. I understand why it might not be as easy for others 😅 [choose violence ask game]

Self Fic Rec, Fave Edition

In no particular order:

Hope Is a Fragile Thing - Dragon Age, Solas/OFC, rated T, ~13K words. A post-canon romance between a Fen'Harel who succeeded in taking the Veil down and an MGIT. It's softer and gentler than you think, as well as sadder. I love this one because it's just so...atmospheric. It's 'the love was there; it didn't change anything but it was there' taken to one of its possible conclusions.

Unexpected - Fallout 4, Kellogg/F!SoSu, rated E, ~30K words. My first truly canon divergent fic. A Sole Survivor who was a Chinese PoW meets a battered merc and together they both get redeemed. Still really proud of this one for a lot of reasons, and it's one of my FO fics that I've reread more than once.

With You - DA:I, Varric/F!Hawke, rated E, ~4800 words. Hawke and Varric finally get together. Finally. I love this one simply because I have a deep, abiding adoration for this pairing (as it was the first one I wrote for DA), and of all the Hawke's I've created for various fics, Elly is my favorite.

Into the Current - DA, Iron Bull/OFC, rated E, ~80K words. I love MGIT's. There is simply so much room to play. This one is a paramedic transported to Thedas before the events of the games and becomes a Charger, falling for Bull along the way. Takes place between 9: 28 - 9:40 Dragon.

Different Animals - Fallout TV, Lucy/Cooper Howard, rated E, ~9500 words. A long oneshot about Lucy becoming more than just a Vaultie and Cooper remembering that he used to be a halfway decent human being. (It's now turned into a whole series of these, and I'm still writing them currently.)

Honorable Mentions:

Junkyard Dogs - Fallout 4, Hancock/F!SoSu, rated E, ~107K words. My very first fic. Mostly a retelling of the game, with a happy ending and a whole series of related stuff. Without this fic, there would be no crackinglamb.

What a Wicked Game to Play - DA:I, Solas/OFC, rated E, ~412K words. My grand epic. No list of my own fics would be complete without mentioning it. I set out to write a huge, all encompassing story of an MGIT changing Solas's mind, and I did. It was over two years of blood, sweat and tears and while I exhausted myself writing it, Imogen will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Alistair drinks cask ale. He's annoying about it, too - if Doom Bar is off, he won't order anything until it's back on.

Morrigan drinks Woodford Reserve, neat. She won't drink any other whiskey. If, for some ungodly reason, the pub does not have any Woodford Reserve, she drinks cranberry juice because it looks vaguely like blood.

Cullen drinks basic lager that's essentially fermented piss. We're talking Peroni, we're talking Amstel. He's always very apologetic about his taste in beer.

Dorian drinks Bailey's, because it's sweet and milky and he likes that.

Sebastian drinks prosecco, because one of them had to, and he's a prince, ergo a fancy bitch.

Josephine drinks pornstar martinis and can drink everyone under the table.

Bull also drinks pornstar martinis and has tried (and failed) to drink Josephine under the table.

Zevran drinks gin and lemonade. Or vodka lemonade. He's not fussy.

Isabela drinks Guinness because she likes the taste, and tbh that's so valid of her.

Shale doesn't drink. She's the designated driver/person who gets everyone home.

Fenris drinks red wine because he can't seem to wrap his head around any other form of alcohol.

Aveline drinks lager shandies (a shandy is half lemonade, half beer).

Solas drinks Japanese whiskey on the rocks and acts superior to people who drink Scotch.

Vivienne drinks champagne. Not prosecco, the real thing.

Varric drinks IPAs. Usually a local one if the pub has it, but otherwise whatever's on tap. In that case, he prefers Beavertown Neck Oil.

Leliana drinks rum and coke, but never Malibu. She prefers dark rums, but if there aren't any of those on offer, she'll go for a spiced rum.

Oghren drinks cask ale, and isn't picky about which one. He's just happy to be here.

Sten drinks tap water with a single cube of ice.

Loghain drinks Hendricks and tonic. A lot of the time, the pub won't have cucumber slices for the garnish; he always complains about that.

Wynne drinks Aperol spritzes and always comments on how they "taste like summer."

Blackwall drinks alcohol free beer because he's sober but he hates feeling left out.

Merrill drinks mojitos and drinks almost everyone under the table.

Bethany Hawke drinks white wine spritzers.

Carver Hawke also drinks white wine spritzers.

Anders drinks cider and is upset if there isn't one on tap (there almost always is).

Cassandra drinks rose with ice.

Cole drinks a different thing every time. He's infinitely curious.

Happy Wednesday, everyone. Here’s a bit from Daughter of Fire, chapter 13 aka Elluin has too many secrets and suddenly everyone will know about them.Val Royeaux.

The city of radiant abundance shaped Elluin's life more than any other place. In the shadow of the grandiose palaces, she had learned to live among humans and to read the fine threads of truth hidden behind their masks.

When her adoptive father died, the grief of walking alone on the same streets they once roamed drove her to run away and never look back. She renounced the inheritance Hirrum had left her, even though she had promised never to forget him.

For ten years Elluin successfully avoided the beckoning of her second home. For ten long years she pretended that her heart belonged to no place.

With every step the horse took, the years in Val Royeaux came back to her mind, and the vivid memories of the good and bad days she had spent in her adoptive father's bookshop brought tears to her eyes. Tears she could only hold back with difficulty before her companions noticed her grief.

"Sparks, what's going on?" Varric startled her as he spurred the smaller horse and rode closer to Elluin. "You're paler than usual."

Of course Varric had noticed her distress. Hiding her feelings from the man was as futile as hoping that morning would never come.

"I'm fine," she said, waving her hand in front of her face where a group of pesky flies buzzed about. "The flies irritate me."

"Sure they are. Listen, if you want to talk about it ..."

"That's just it, Varric, I don't want to talk about it," she said through clenched teeth. Glory - the magnificent grey horse she rode - sensed her distress and shook his head three times, neighed softly. "I'm sorry, boy," she stroked the horse's head to reassure him. A twinge of guilt quelled her growing annoyance at Varric's persistence. She had often wondered if horses could sense the connection she had with Rage and the power it offered.

"Varric, stop bothering the Herald," Cassandra stepped in when he opened his mouth to insist. "She does not want to speak about her problems, leave her alone."

ACK sorry I’m late!! But, I’ve finally had time to actually update you guys with something! :D Thank you so much for the tag, @layalu! 

Since the last chapter (and Solas and Mellan FINALLY FUCKING KISSING DEAR GOD) the two are developing in their own dorky way! (But don’t worry, weird Fade shenanigans will occur directly after this, because they’re not allowed to rest~💖

Goodness, what trouble. Days felt like weeks in the buzzing hearts of elves - for those who approved and disapproved of these new developments alike.

It was not as if things were kept secret for long, as much as Solas and Mellan both would have preferred. However, one running after the other during a night of dancing, only to be spotted later by one of Cullen’s men, escorting each other arm-in-arm to the lady’s room with flushed faces… well, assumptions had to be made, no matter how innocent they could swear their actions were!

In reality, nothing further happened, of course; other than a new nightly routine that never failed to send Mellan dragging her body down the door as soon as it was closed, face in her hands and feet smacking against the floor in violent, childish glee.

It had already been fairly commonplace that the scholars’ nights would end with the pair burning the last of the midnight oil, or down to the last flickering wicks of candles that begged for death, and it would only be then that they would concede to slumber. Solas would accompany Mellan back to her bedroom - a place he now actively seemed to avoid during the evening hours since that night of dancing; perhaps their shift in status had marked a shift in his mind for what counted as a polite barrier as well? - and they would continue chatting all along the way.

It would only be upon reaching that sacred threshold that both would take pause, and a new dance was performed. 

Solas would smile, in that kind and patient way that he always did, but now the look held an ulterior meaning; one reserved for Mellan and Mellan alone. She’d answer it back in kind, large eyes meeting his in something like a nod as she’d glance to his lips, the tracest amount of a grin dabbled on hers. A playful secret held behind her blushing cheeks, Solas would lean in as if to whisper in her ear with a bit of added gossip, instead taking her chin in tender hand.

Even if her lips were over-bitten to looking beestung, Solas swore they were kissable, and seemed bound and determined to prove it through demonstration. It wasn’t as if she would accept a lecture in this particular area.

Mellan would lean into his touch each and every time, tipped-toes hoisting themselves up as far as they would go, and it would only be her vice grip to his necklace that kept her from falling. With each goodnight kiss she sunk further into him, any worries she might have temporarily melting away like the wax of their faded candles, even if just for a moment.

I feel so bad for what I have planned for them oh my god

hehe not at allll i write whatever scenes happen to my brain and then closer to the end of drafting i work to finish up whatever's missing

if the first scene is what my brain is giving me, then i like to start with that, especially for writing OCs and finding tone and stuff. very often i'll start with the most (or one of the most) climactic scene of the fic, so that i know where everything is building to

How fully formed does your writing come out on the first try?

very close to fully formed! that's what i coast on tbh

How many drafts do you go through?

that REALLY depends! i try not to go through more than 3 at most tbh. sometimes what i post is my very first draft oops

Tell me about your process?

open-ended questions my beloathed,,, so i'm actually developing new writing processes rn on account of starting to write longer fics. the first step in the new developing process is making a planning doc that includes any outlines, notes, timelines, and links to sources if i feel i need any. then i start a separate doc for the fic itself and set up section headers that correspond to the outline. often, when i write, the fic goes in its own direction rather than adhering strictly to the outline, which is why i outline very loosely and adjust as i go.

i'm often updating the planning doc while i'm writing too. usually by the time the fic is ready to be beta read, the planning doc isn't getting updated anymore XD

UPDATE: Characters are tagged by their *FIRST names. Origins and Inquisition PCs are tagged #the warden or #the inquisitor. Hawke is always just #hawke, Rook is always just #rook. I don't specify gender *or faction/surname in my character tags, EXCEPT for the Inquisitor because it's too much of a habit not to. This system is already complicated enough and I have like... 12 followers anyway.

Ships are tagged #[character] x [character] in alphabetical order, with the PCs just using their title EXCEPT for the Inquisitor. I also use the more common portmanteaus (like Solavellan, Fenhawke, Adoribull, etc) if I'm making an original post that I want to show up in the tags, but I would still slap "lavellan x solas" on a Solavellan post (for example) just for consistency. If you really really don't want to see a specific ship on this blog, block the alphabetized "character x character" tag. I know that's inconvenient if you hate Solavellan or something but like... I guess also what are you doing on this specific blog if you don't like that ship anyway.
