Tembela: to trust, to have hope for. | Banele Vakele Tembela 2017, Wine of Origin Constantia. Made at Groot Constantia under the mentorship of Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) member Boela Gerber. The Grenache Noir was harvested first and whole bunch fermented. Four days later, the Syrah was harvested, and one of the batches of Grenache Noir was co-fermented in a 14 ton stainless steel tank with the Syrah. Block 21 Syrah was fermented separately a week later. The Syrah was subsequently matured in 500 liter fourth full French oak barrels. The co-fermented Syrah/Grenache was matured in 225 liter French oak barrels. The 100% Grenache Noir was matured in third fill 225 liter French oak barrels. This inspired story is the beginning of a beautiful conversation about symbiosis and the legacies we leave as we go about our life’s work. Proceeds from the sale of Banele and his contemporaries’ CWG Protege Wine will be donated towards the Cape Winemakers Guild Protege Programme, a 3 year mentorship Programme for young South African Winemakers such as Banele.
