sure, so this is broad strokes and it's also worth reiterating that the energy deficit characteristic of EDs can have a lot of different causes besides intentional food restriction—food insecurity is a huge and underrecognised factor here but there are many others. so when i talk about intentional restriction and the desire to be thin / lose weight, i'm not suggesting these are universal characteristics or causes of EDs.
anyway though, in the context of discussing these things, and particularly the relationship between 'diet culture' and EDs, a perennial frustration to me is that i often hear people fall back on the idea that the desire to be thin comes about as a result of the beauty standards perpetuated in mass media, fashion adverts, &c, without any subsequent interrogation of why it is that beauty itself is now so heavily dependent on thinness. after all, plenty of people have pointed out this is not a universal; beauty varies in different times and places, what is described or depicted as beautiful in historical records doesn't necessarily have much overlap with today's hegemonic standards, and so forth.
so when historicising this phenomenon it becomes very clear that the euro/anglo standard of thinness as beauty is, one, part of the ideological apparatus justifying colonialism thru the creation of race and white supremacy. sabrina strings and da'shaun harrison have written on this. two, the thin ideal is also inextricably tied up in medical discourses defining the ideal body as one that is economically productive, with the promise being that if the populace can be transformed into 'healthy',*** useful, hardworking citizens, the state benefits. control of bodyweight is therefore certainly a means of demonstrating one's supposed self-control, moral discipline, &c, but it is also a demand expressed in medical terms: these two discourses merge and overlap, and are both part of the capitalist state's transformation of its citizenry into a biological resource that can be controlled, managed, and exploited to bourgeois ends (profit): hence, biopolitics.
(***the story of how 'health' itself comes to be so dependent on thinness is obviously a critical piece of all this but this post is long as shit already so suffice it to say that this conflation is also not obvious, necessary, universal, &c &c)
medico-political discourses in the 19th century tended to talk about the dangers of both over- and under-weight more than what we hear now; similarly, if you think about something like wilbur atwater's calorie-value charts, these were explicitly intended to guide labourers to the most calorie-dense foods, because to atwater the central danger to be avoided was starvation among the workforce. these days in wealthy countries like the us, you are much more likely to hear about weight management in the context of demands to reduce; this is of course following moves like the WHO declaring an 'obesity epidemic' in 1997, and the rise in the usa of more explicitly nationalist, militaristic weight-loss rhetoric in the post-9/11 era.
however, my position is that these demands for thinness, and the beauty standard that follows and justifies them, are not a departure from earlier 19th- and 20th-century scientific nutrition advice, just an evolution that, for a multitude of reasons (politics, medical professional interests, insurance company practices, &c) has simply come to focus more on the ostensible economic and national threat posed by fatness. the underlying logic bears the biopolitical throughline: the state has, or ought to have, an interest in enforcing the health of its population, and as part of this demands that you the individual surveil and alter your weight according to the scientific guidelines du jour.
this is fertile ground for the development of what, in extreme form, we regard as ED pathology. first, because even the most purely 'health'-motivated individual engaging in the required degree of bodily monitoring and caloric restriction is liable to respond to energy deficit in ways that can become diagnosably distressing. second, because the morals of 'health' are never far from standards of beauty; thinness is sold in overtly profitable ways (the diet and weight-loss industries) and furthermore, our idea of beauty is often a kind of post hoc justification for the thinness already being demanded by state and medical authorities. which is really just to say, beauty is part of the ideological superstructure both resulting from and invoked as a justification for the material conditions of capitalist biopolitics. again this is very broad strokes, but imo it is a much more useful framework to understand EDs than simply presenting them as a result of desiring thinness because it is glorified in The Media, because... reasons (essentially the rené girard model, lol).

kanghaskhan can mega evolve right? isn’t that really dangerous for ones that have babies?
there's definitely all the normal risks associated with letting a young pokemon battle, along with some other potential problems. if a joey is too young, it actually won't be able to mega evolve. there's a point at which the biological infrastructure necessary for mega evolution develops, the same way that it does in pokemon that evolve. however, even when they reach the age where mega evolution can impact them, a joey that's still regularly in the pouch hasn't had much experience- if any- experience fighting.
there's also the problem that mega evolution is incredibly strenuous on a pokemon's body, and it's not recommended to mega evolve a pokemon that hasn't trained. it'd be like asking someone who's never worked out before to deadlift 200% of their bodyweight. asking an immature pokemon to mega evolve can have serious repercussions on their overall growth.
it's also emotionally stressful for both mother and joey- moreso the mother. analysis of stress hormone levels in mother kangaskhan with joeys prior to, during, and after mega evolution shows a serious spike in stress during the process, much more so than kangaskhan without a joey. as a result, although there are competitive advantages to having what's effectively an additional (though weak) pokemon on the field, it's largely considered unethical to mega evolve a kangaskhan that is currently carrying a joey. most leagues and competitive tournaments have banned the use of mega evolution unless a kangaskhan is not currently mothering a joey.
of course, the usual physical stress of mega evolution also affects an adult kangaskhan regardless of whether she currently has a joey, but it's not to a level that endangers her or stresses her beyond the normal eustress of battle so long as the evolution is not maintained for too long.

Wait until the other species find out that the only thing preventing Earth from being pummeled to death by the asteroid belt is the gravitational pull and orbit of Jupiter holding the belt and other space rocks back. (Sometimes Jupiter lets one slip tho and flings it right at us or the other inner planets. The dinosaurs got the last rock that Jupiter threw at Earth.)

I know there is this trope of "Earth is actually a deathworld" in the human space orcs prompts, but Earth is genuinely the closest to a heaven you can get naturally from a planet.
The other species would envy the humans for getting such a starting advantage. Turians had to adapt to a radioactive planet after their ozone layer fizzled out, quarians became the disease carriers in their world for the lack of bugs to spread pollen around which completely shattered any resemblance of immune system they could've had.
Compare it to our Earth that's impossibly diverse, the rich evolution history it gave humans. It's not normal for an animal to have such a varied diet as us! So many of the stuff we are able to eat would kill them. Our bodies have biological clocks that sync with the day and night cycle. Our hands have fully articulated 5 fingers, and one of them is a thumb! Having a thumb is so vital to creating/using tools that it's a miracle species without it even managed to get through the stone age. So many of the aliens have fewer fingers, paws, or claws.
Our hands are insanely complex, not even counting the unique per-person fingerprints. Each finger has 4 joints, totalling 20 joints per hand. Allowing us extremely precise movements and the perfect limb to grab any shape whatsoever with. We wouldn't have had any of that wasn't it for the long line of ancestry we hold, we would've probably ended up as another aquatic species wasn't it for Earth developing the ozone layer and allowing us to go on land + plants and actually liveable wide areas of land.
So back to earth—Not only is the ozone layer and the Earth magnetic field constantly protecting us, but so is the moon! So is Jupiter! So are the remaining planets in the outer rings that filter out all the large asteroids. Jupiter flinging one asteroid at us once a couple millennias is so much more preferable to the shower of asteroids we would've been heralded in every single day.
Or how convenient Mars' existence is to us. So close by, mineral rich and ready to be explored, the perfect test planet to attempt to integrate into. A clear set goal for the future. How humans in Mass Effect got handed all the advanced space travel technology from the remains of Prothean bases there, ones previously used to observe us. Did the other species get the same? Asari, sure, yeah, but salarians and turians had to actually work to master space travel.
9 planets and 181 moons. Our solar system is even located at the outer edge of the Milky Way, where it's nice and less crowded. We're literally living in the suburban housing equivalent of planetary systems.
Earth is genuinely a haven, the perfect cradle to nurture sustainable life. All the other species have problems and mutations caused by their less than ideal planet environments, which they had to overcome with science—even the asari, don't forget the glaring problem of how reproducing with each other can results in Ardat Yakshi— Meanwhile, humans can be suited up and ready to go.
Our faulty expiring spines and only two sets of teeth pale in comparison to salarian bodies needing extreme support for each joint, drell breathing diseases, and hanar inability to carry their own bodyweight. Humans' bodies are very adapt, even in space, your brain starts adjusting the blood flow and regulating it's own pressure.
We might not have 4 eyes or other advantages like the protheans, but we definitely can get a passing grade in space survival with little to no modifications, only regular exercise.
That's why the theory of "unique earth" is so popular. Even when we do find an earth-like planet, it's rarely in a suitable star system. It's bare and defenceless with nothing to protect it. It's only a matter of time before it's flattened by asteroids or melted by radiation.
The sharks on earth are older than the forming of the literal north star. If that's not proof enough of Earth being perfect for propagating and maintaining life, then I don't know what is.

I love how rainworld’s timeline is essentially a evolution from fight to flight for the slugcats.
Like you start with Spearmaster, and their whole gimmick is stabbing at things and absorbing their life energy to sustain themself. They spawn sharp needles from their tail and thread them through the flesh of prey and predator alike in order for their mission to continue.
Then you move on to Artificer and her revenge quest. She is grieving and so so irrational as she stabs and mauls and explodes every scavenger she sees. She is a whirr of smoke and ash and soot and fire as she creates the next grenade or explosive spear to drag the scav population into the negatives.
And while Gourmand is a bit harder to sell with this idea, his food quest involves having to kill then eat various lizards and centipedes, along with the already deadly creature spawns. That scug can squish creatures with his sheer bodyweight alone, and throw spears with so much strength and power practically everything he hits with it dies on impact.
Then there’s Hunter, who can hold three spears at maximum and has the scars to prove every single battle they’ve landed themself in. They’re a ticking time bomb who must complete their mission before a just as violent rot consumes them, and they do this by fighting and killing and eating everything that comes their way with ease.
Then comes Survivor, who has lost the ability to consume creatures much larger than themself compared to their ancestors, but can still throw a spear with some power and is agile and dangerous enough to kill predators twice their size if not bigger. But they’ve still lost much of the former fire that quickly brought their predecessors to the title of apex predator.
Then enter Monk, who has less spear power than their sibling, and a more flighty, avoiding personality to boot. They explore a world with much less danger than their sibling and ancestors, and when they do find danger, it is often better to fly rather than fight.
Then Rivulet swims into a world tormented by a frequent, overwhelming downpour that yields little to no time for combat and killing. It dashes through lizards and monster kelp alike, outrunning every creature coming for it with ease. And while it can throw a spear well, it’s often better to run and dash away lest the rain comes in to take both it and the opposing creature away.
And finally, Saint. Saint, who can’t throw a spear to save their life. Saint, who meditates instead of sleeping the non-existent cycles away. Saint, who has evolved to have a long, sticky tongue to avoid danger at all cost. Saint, who avoids everything and everyone until they’ve gathered enough karma to ascend the cursed world it lives in.
So yes, while the slugcats have managed to survive despite the world and ecosystem that hates them, they’ve turned from a species of fighting and stabbing and killing, to one with a mindset of running and fleeing and avoiding.

A lot of it was in the vicious cycle that their skeletons were lightened and very bottom-heavy. Their size supported large fermenting stomachs that could just about digest any plant matter with enough time, and they could expend less energy relative to their bodyweight the larger they grew. There were structural air sacks and cavities in bones, their entire necks were dotted with airsacs that are theorized to have been used as display structures (a bit like the cheeks of frogs). DInosaurs in general had exaptations for size in this lighter skeleton that they had evolved long before diversifying, it enabled them to grow to these sizes, but it also meant that they prevented the evolution of other taxa into terestrial niches that enabled those same sizes (it's even possible that this selective pressure on non-dinosaurs caused a loss in genes to support senescence and that long-lived mammals have had to re-mutate any genes to support a long life). Mammals and avian dinosaurs never attained the sizes of NA dinosaurs on land, but they both grew in the inmediate aftermath of the mesozoic's end. This is also true for the early semi-aquatic hoofed ancestors of cetaceans, Indohyus, which inherited the ocean after Plesiosaurs and Mosasaurs (which wen extinct for the same reason as NA dinosaurs, due to the collapse of the foodchain and their heightened metabolic needs). Over the next 12 million years, they took on a shape we're more familiar with and giants like Perucetus at a lenght of 17 meters had already emerged from the water supporting a larger conventionally mammalian skeleton and the marine foodweb recovering in the absence of apex predators as it had known in the mesozoic. These changes supported any mutations which increased the size of cetaceans until they hit the metabolic limits. Baileen whales need to partake in yearly migrations spanning at least from a pole to a tropic to obtain enough calories from plankton blooms and to feed intermittently on their way back.

the evolution of sloths fuck me up because they used to be such a successful group of animals. ground sloths were just too fucking big for any predators to eat, they had bones under their skin that worked like armour and they were HUGE, like the size of elephants huge, so basically nothing could bite them. despite having slow metabolisms and an awkward gait they were just too big to eat, and that worked out so well for them they were one of the few genera from South America who didn't get wiped off the Earth after encountering North American predators. they had big claws to help them dig and big teeth to help them eat and they were basically grizzly bears who ate leaves. grizzly bears that were impossible to kill. because they had BONES under their SKIN. these things were everywhere! we had terrestrial sloths and arboreal sloths and one species of sloth that might've been fully aquatic.
and now they're all gone and the two types of sloth that remain survive by moving so little they're camouflaged among trees because of the algae growing in their fur. they still retain the characteristics from their ancient ancestors that would've towered over humans. they still have their big claws that were previously used to dig huge burrows that ancient humans used for shelter, the slow metabolism that helped them adapt to many different environments, and they still make their weekly voyage down from the trees to poop on the ground, in memory of their ancestors. like. these animals were so successful and so widespread and now their legacy lives on in these weird little mammalian bat-lizards who hang upside down their whole lives and whose bodyweight at any given time might be made of 33% poop.
