Lovelies, I just thought I'd make a lil post commemorating the fact that as of this Barricade Day, it's the 10th anniversary of the Texas trip! Ten years ago we were all together and I cannot believe it's been so long, and also only been 10 years. I am so grateful for all of you, and all the friends I made in the Les Mis fandom. I don't mean to be hyperbolic when I say that truly it changed my life to meet you all. We've all changed over the last ten years, and the world has, as well, but what hasn't changed is that I love you all very, very much, even if I am very, very not around most of the time anymore. Thank you for being my friends, and for being fundamental is my growth as a human. <3 Now, the law of progress is, that monsters shall disappear before the angels, and that Fatality shall vanish before Fraternity. It is a bad moment to pronounce the word love. No matter, I do pronounce it. And I glorify it. Love, the future is thine.

top 10 comfort shows
thank you @sainteverge for tagging me xD i don't think i have 10 though. I need to find more comfort shows.
Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: it's sentai, it's for selling toys to 5 year olds, it's an anniversary season, it's also still the best sentai season imo made with a lot of heart and one i watch over and over again. and also write fic for. pirates fighting against an Empire and in a polycule too, what more do i want. lies, i want more. but for now i settle for rewatching over and over. it's also really good during depressive episodes because it isn't complicated to understand and be emotionally invested in. i've used it to get through depressive swings this year lol.
Revolutionary girl utena: this show- y'all. i'm still in the haze from how good this show is and i have thoughts, so many thoughts but so many of the rambly variety and i've already started rewatching and just, this show is so good. soo soo good.
Natsume Yuujinchou: a slice of life anime about seeing youkai but really about being ostracised and shunned and about being weird and not feeling fully human and finding community with other weirdos. i really love its calm pace in certain moods, i love the characters and i want to know everything about Reiko. when will the seventh season come out, my crops are dying.
Black Sails: I've watched it twice, both times got something new out of it to chew on. It's a well plotted, well paced show and I can rewatch it again tbh.
Granada Holmes: It's Sherlock Holmes, it's Watson. It's got good acting. It's got a great read on the characters as they exist in the books. 'nuff said.
Shoujo Cosette: i don't think it needs a lot of explanation. It has a lot of rewatch potential and ability to wreck you during Fantine's scenes. It's good.
tagging @pilferingapples @lemeute @bodhimcbodeface and anyone else who wants to do this, really.

Last Song: well currently I'm listening to an instrumental (?) youtube video called "adhd relief music" or something, if that counts. the last song I listened to before that was Loreena McKennit's "The Highwayman" bc I am in a Mood today
Currently Watching: I've recently started watching both Leverage and Avatar: The Last Airbender for the first time? I'm enjoying them both but my current episode of Leverage has been paused for like 3 days due to a secondhand embarrassment moment
Currently Reading: "Leaping Poetry: An Idea with Poems and Translations" by Robert Bly, and Les Mis via the chapter-a-day emails
Current Obsession: unfortunately I'm lacking one, but at least Les Mis is here for me in this trying time

re: the oxford comma
@bodhimcbodeface replied to your post: oh I really want to hear what you have to say about how the oxford comma doesn’t always reduce ambiguity? I can’t think of a situation where it’s unhelpful, please enlighten me!
why can’t i just do reply to a reply anymore i had to paste this in manually 😭
ANYWAYS: you’ve activated my trap card!! here you go.
classic example of oxford comma reducing ambiguity:
I invited the strippers, JFK and Stalin. [w/o oxford comma - ambiguous: are JFK and Stalin the strippers, or are the strippers a separate group?]
I invited the strippers, JFK, and Stalin. [w/ oxford comma - unambiguous: the strippers are indeed separate.]
however, you can tweak this example very easily into a sentence in which the oxford comma creates ambiguity instead:
I invited the stripper, JFK, and Stalin. [w/ oxford comma - ambiguous: is the stripper named JFK, or are JFK and the stripper different people?]
I invited the stripper, JFK and Stalin. [w/o oxford comma - unambiguous: we can see now that this is a list of separate people because stripper is singular, and thus cannot be conflated with JFK and Stalin.]
my point is not that the oxford comma is good or the oxford comma is bad--my point is that prescriptivism is nonsense and that language should, first and foremost, communicate. grammar should serve that, not the other way around. And it’s not just about reducing ambiguity, it’s also about tone, mood, style etc. all those articles that are like “why you should always use the oxford comma” and “is the oxford comma necessary?” and “the polarizing debate over the oxford comma” are always missing the point. it’s not about the fucking comma!!!! the oxford comma is not a beacon of grammatical clarity any more than like, any other punctuation mark. they serve purposes, they are not purposes in and of themselves. I use a period at the end of questions in written dialogue sometimes because I think a period conveys my intended tone better, not because of some bizarre notion that the period is a superior punctuation mark to the question mark. it’s such a ridiculous argument. (that might be a false equivalency, i’m tired and i can’t dissect my own logical fallacies after midnight pls try again in one business day)
i have nothing against the oxford comma, and I think it’s very useful in many contexts. I am, however, quite peeved at the way we talk about it in mainstream debates because I think it obscures the real issue, which is the encoded prescriptivist attitudes in our studies of grammar and language and the consequences thereof. see: “lawyer dog” vs “lawyer, dawg” vs what counts as a clear and unequivocal request for a lawyer in a court of law. these are separate issues, and law is, of course, very concerned with precision of language.
anyways, prescriptivism is bankrupt, stop dragging the oxford comma into your pedantry olympics, and just like. allow context to matter. that’s my piece.
#٩( ᐛ )و#cyan gets too deep in the weeds#mine#mymeta#grammar#oxford comma#language#languages#prescriptivism#bodhimcbodeface#asks and replies#i'm really tired i have no idea if this makes sense anymore#obviously fizz this isn't directed at you#i am simply using your question as a springboard to launch me onto a soapbox taller than me ty for ur service

From what I understand of how the US citizenship exam works, it’s not quite this. It’s a test that is very much set up to encourage lots of rote memorization--they’re very helpful about listing all the possible questions on the USCIS, along with concise approved answers. They really encourage you to memorize 128 (formerly 120) questions and answers. Simple answers, usually not even a full sentence.
Given that, making the language technical and opaque mostly just serves to make things very difficult for people without a fairly high level of English--not a working level of English, but an ability to listen (this is a spoken exam) to formal test-taking language.
The earlier form of the test wasn’t much better, but they did lean towards more direct language. eg:
“Who is in charge of the executive branch?” You still have to memorize the phrase executive branch, but--importantly in a spoken exam--the key words are easy to pick out. Who tells you that the answer is going to be a person. The sentence structure isn’t too fussy. It’s a sentence structure that’s useful: Who’s in charge of the cafeteria? Who’s in charge of car rentals? Who’s in charge of hiring new employees?
vs the new version: “The President of the United States is in charge of which branch of government?”
What are the key words here? President of the United States? Well, that phrase is in many questions here. So are the words branch and government. There’s not a lot to latch onto here, if you’re struggling to listen to a language you’re still learning. And look at that goddamn sentence structure!
Similarly, several questions have been changed from things like “Why did ______?” to “Name one reason that ______” For a language learner, it’s useful to be able to pick out question words: A who question is going to need a person for an answer, where needs a place, why needs a reason. This is hard to do, but it’s an important daily-function language skill. “Name one reason ____” is an important test-taking language skill. The citizenship test is intended to test your English--but it’s not supposed to be gauging whether you’re ready for the SATs.
The basic memorize-a-bunch-of-specific-shit hasn’t changed, as far as I know (though I have no knowledge of how things look internally among the people doing testing). But the shit you have to memorize has been made much wordier in much more abstract ways.
Disclaimer: i am really not an expert here--I’m tutoring some friends, based on a set of workbooks and what I can find on the USCIS site, etc.

Post 6 sentences from a WIP and then tag 6 people.
Crouched over the box, meeting the mouse’s trembling black eyes, she’d promised to take very good care of it.
In the morning, the mouse was gone.
Milly learned three lessons from this:
1. Love and fear can look very similar.
2. If care looks like a cage, people and pets alike are bound to run away.
3. Mouse pee stink never really comes out of fabric.
She’s mostly thinking of the third as she crawls on her elbows and belly through the musty old crawl space.
….i may have started writing the fix-it
