"I don't know if you know, but there is this thing called temporary hair dye, and it comes in all sorts of colors," he explained like his coworker had never seen a cosmetic product in his life.

"So, I happen to pick this pink one and apply it to my bangs. I thought it looked good and decided to go out like that."

        Dahlia was called to the visitor’s room abruptly, saying that a certain detective wanted to speak with her about something, but they wouldn’t tell her what exactly. Detective   ?   What for   ?   It had been years since she had been sent away in here to rot and she had told her story over a thousand times, answered every single question law enforcement wished to know. She sighed, knowing this was going to be another tiring session of the same old treatment. She was led into the room by the guard and she sat down in her seat, a brow rising once she saw the other person across from her. This wasn’t a face she was familiar with.   ❛   Um, who are you exactly, mister   ?   ❜

It was one of his first times outside the house since he properly healed-- save for the stitches on his side, and of course, his bagel brand had been moved just out of his reach. Or, maybe it always was, and he never noticed it until stretching up that way pulled his stitches.

When the attorney heard the other's voice, he jumped with a small startled noise coming from his lips. "O-oh, uh, P-Prosecutor Blackquill!" This was... not the place he expected to see the other. Then again, he didn't imagine seeing any prosecutor at the grocery store, he supposed.

Simon had just finished bandaging his hand when Bobby showed up. This isn't the sort of thing he really wants to explain, especially to that blubbering worrywart, so into his pocket it goes. Hopefully this will only take a moment and won't require any writing. Paperwork would be just the worst thing right now.

Klavier listened carefully. His hair was left alone and managed to look Simon in the eyes again. His expression went neutral. He couldn’t stay angry when someone talked like that and he was already in the process of getting over whatever was said in his address.

He sighed when Simon finished. The little feisty demons on his shoulders were quieter again and he didn’t need to push his smile. He closed his eyes and shook his head.

“Look.” He opened his eyes and put a hand on his hip again. “I’m not going to pretend I understand how you feel or what you went through, what made you the way you are. I appreciate the explanation, though, I really do. I’m sure I will forgive you in the next twenty-four hours. However, I‘m exhausted right now and I would really like to go home to my dog. I don’t think anything I say right now will sound genuine, and I think you deserve an honest response.”

"I suspected such." Simon nodded and stood. He let out a small sigh, directed at himself much more than at Klavier. He lowered his head.

"I don't speak in jest when I say I'm a bad person and agree with your own judgements. I spent years honing myself into an unpalatable beast surrounded by violence and injustice... And like me, old habits somehow live on."

He paused for a few seconds before continuing, "I am trying to be a better person, but it's a long and arduous road, and it's been a long time since I was last able to walk freely. I don't enjoy being cruel and hurting others; I'm just better at that than at being kind."

He lifted his head and fixed Klavier with a direct, clear gaze. "You are not stupid; a moron wouldn't be such a successful and justice-focused prosecutor. You are worthy of love and even actively loved; I scarcely imagine Her Pettiness doesn't love you, and there are others. You are not boring, for those and other reasons. Ask any of your fans or coworkers." He took the feather out of his mouth and tucked it back into his hair.

"I won't demand your forgiveness or understanding. Those are yours to hold or grant however you like. But I am sorry, truly, and I hope my apologies are of some good."

Who are you without the company of others? You aren’t sure, but you know that you aren’t fond of whoever it is. You are an actor, a pretty face and a pleasant song. It is not that Klavier is a depressed person. Or a reserved one. He does not hide his amusement and his pleasure about a good joke. But there are times when he is more reserved than usual. It’s something he had learned to accept.

Better days, and worse days.

But that has all been before he had met Bobby. Bobby, who always managed to maintain bright and warm, with a smile on his face. And it is also Bobby who manages to turn those bad days into good ones, as if it were the easiest thing in the world.
