“God DAMN it, Rufus, I’m USELESS in this state!” Bobby shouted, slamming his fist down on his leg hard enough to bruise. 

He didn’t even feel it. Tears stung hotly at his eyes, and he fought them furiously.

Rufus’ blue jeans wobbled blurrily in his vision, but the man himself was completely silent, completely still.

While Bobby struggled to compose himself, Rufus just stood there, the whole time. The hell was he waiting for? Bobby didn’t want to see the look of pity in his eyes, but he looked up anyway.

There was no pity. There was just Rufus’ furrowed brow, gazing down at Bobby in an unreadable way.

Moving slow, he picked up Bobby’s hand from where it was digging into his leg, gently supporting it in his fingers. Like a shitty romance movie, he actually lowered his face down, down, and kissed his hand. 

Bobby inhaled, sharp. Goosebumps erupted up his arm. His head spun. His mouth dropped open, to protest, without words. But Rufus’ eyes were closed, rapturous, the whole time his lips were in contact with the wrinkled, freckled, toughened skin. 

When his lips lifted, his eyes flicked up to Bobby’s face with a softened look.

Then he winced.

One hand in Bobby’s, the other firm on his own lower back, he slowly, slowly straightened up. He laid Bobby’s hand back on his leg with gentle warmth.

“Too old to be doing that,” he mumbled, wobbling out of the room.
