You know this thing that Taylor does where she sings a surprise song at every show? but in this case it's her own song, what if yn did the same thing but with songs by other artists
Just A Girl
A/N: this is honestly just a 1d!YN appreciation post
SINCE 2010 masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s officially her thing to sing a new cover song for each of her shows!
Sometimes it's a One Direction song, an unreleased song, or just a song from an artist she liked.
Every one of her old band mates’ has an unofficial claim to a cover they do/did on their solo tours: Harry’s is The Chain, Louis’s is 505...
But if there was one cover that’s her cover, it’s “Just A Girl” by No Doubt.
To introduce the song, she’d make a little joke about reminding the audience that even though she’s dancing and prancing around the stage, that doesn’t give them an excuse to look at her chest as she does so. She’d even pinch the top of her corset top—an outfit to pay homage to the cover art of her third album—and tug it up with a cheeky shake of her chest...all before openly pushing up her breasts from underneath.
She’d wink at a fan in the crowd before letting out an innocent, “What?” at the fans’ excited response. She’d put a satin gloved hand over her chest, pushing a shoulder to touch her ear and shyly say, “m’just a girl after all.”
As soon as the words leave her mouth, a smirk spreads across her lips when the sold-out stadium of fans go into a frantic frenzy when they hear the iconic beginning guitar of the song. She makes a slow spin on her heel to walk to her band behind her, looking off to the side where her husband stands with a proud smile in the wings.
This song perfectly encapsulates YN’s upbringing in the music industry: her frustration of being treated lower than her co-workers, band mates—any male just because she’s of the opposite sex.
In a way, it's her Kiwi: a song she can complete and utterly go crazy with. It’s Harry’s turn to sit back and admire the way his spouse can draw in an audience with her stage presence and charisma.
'Cause I'm just a girl, oh, little old me
Well, don't let me out of your sight
Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights
For a long time, she’d listen to this song and view it as a cry for help, a way to express herself in the best way she knows how—through music.
This is one of the few songs that YN likes to bring back a couple of times as her surprise cover song—it even showed up once or twice at her last world tour. With that being said, a couple thousand fans were lucky enough to say that they were a part of the few shows where she performed it.
And on the opposite end, it’s her favorite cover to sing. Especially since she likes to get a bit theatrical with it.
They love to see after she finishes the line, “Oh, I've had it up to here...” YN cheekily bends over, a flattened hand comes up to her forehead to mimic the way someone would physically show their annoyance level. She bites down on her lower lip, bobbing her head to the beat of the music as she walks backwards across the stage.
Or when she dramatically bats her lashes or cheekily drops her jaw in faux offense. Or as she jumps about the stage, hyping up the sea of fans with her stage presence.
She’d be at the end of the massive heart-shaped catwalk, clasping her hands together in front of her after bouncing around the stage, slyly singing, “I'm just a girl.” She twists the tip of her heel into the stage as she pouts. “I'm just a girl in the world. That's all that you'll let me be!”
And the crowd lives for when she feverishly pumps her arms in front of her, dropping down to her knees as she sings, “What I’ve succumbed to is making me numb!” Her mane of curly hair bounces back and forth, following her movements.
The audience is split between standing as still as they can to record the iconic performance while others join YN by jumping up and down, dancing crazily, and being completely enveloped in the moment.
YN mentioned in an interview once how much she feeds off the energy her fans bring to the shows. Similarly to her husband’s tour, the audiences have created a safe space for her to be herself on stage. There’s no sense of judgment and everyone can enjoy themselves freely—whether that be dancing like nobody's watching, standing there with their eyes closed to feel the music, or following the dress decorum of wearing corsets and long opera gloves, everyone is welcomed with open arms.
By the end of it all, she’s a bit out of breath and her hairline glistens with sweat. She stands at the end of her catwalk and looks out to the sea of fans, raised hands and lights.
In a moment of overwhelming gratitude, she tugs off her in-ears and takes a moment to fully hear thousands chant her name in unison. She huffs out a knee-buckling smile and it only makes the fans scream louder.
YN had mentioned to Harry a few times already about how the feeling of appreciation and love for her fans can get a bit overwhelming. Sometimes it hits her like a bus—strong, impactful, and head-on. If she could, she would hug each and everyone of her fans. She would take the time to tell every person individually how much they mean to her.
Even in the midst of the deafening sound, she lets out a chuckle when she can hear the loud whistle piercing its way from the wings.
Never in a million years would she ever think that she’d be here, standing on stage, performing at sold out stadiums almost every night, doing what she loves.
With that, she blinks away the on-coming watery eyes and puts her in-ears back in.
“Alright, London. Let’s continue this dance party,” she’d say before the familiar beats on Nonsense sounds through the stadium.
Yeah, she’s definitely meant to be here.

As a result, the band helped to popularise the Britpop genre and achieved mass popularity in the UK, aided by a widely publicised chart battle with rival band Oasis in 1995 dubbed "The Battle of Britpop

Information on Graham Coxon
Early life
Coxon was born on 12 March 1969 in Rinteln, West Germany, where his father, Bob Coxon, was stationed as a clarinet player and band leader in the British Army.
As a child, he moved first to Spondon, Derby, England, a period during which he became a fan of Derby County.
He then moved to Colchester, Essex, England, where he grew up and met fellow Blur member Damon Albarn at The Stanway School, then known as Stanway Comprehensive, at the age of 11.
At the beginning of their relationship, Coxon would play the saxophone on Albarn's original songs before playing the guitar in several small Colchester bands. He appeared on the popular BBC children's show Blue Peter twice.
Blur
Coxon studied Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, London, for two years, where early on he met bassist Alex James.
In his time there he mixed with upcoming talents such as Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Abigail Lane, some of the future leading lights of the Britart movement. His musical interests were heavily influenced by Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett, whose work he had discovered by 1986.
He quit college due to the increasing success of his band at the time, Seymour, which later changed its name to Blur because the recording company, Food Records, thought Seymour was too 'student-ish'.
They presented a list to the band of preferred names which included "The Shining Path" and "Blur". As well as providing all guitars, backing vocals, and occasional drums, Coxon's lo-fi and alternative musical style and tastes influenced the band's less commercial music in the late 1990s.
He sang lead vocals on songs including "Red Necks", "You're So Great" from the album Blur, and "Coffee & TV", as well as a section of the chorus of "Tender", the bridge of "Lonesome Street" and a section of "Thought I Was a Spaceman" on The Magic Whip.
During the 1995 period of the media-dubbed 'Battle of Britpop', Coxon became increasingly weary and suspicious of the music industry.
His behaviour was occasionally awkward, such as refusing to appear in the video for Blur song "Country House" unless he could dress as a milkman and take no part in any action with which he felt uncomfortable.
In November 2001, Coxon was admitted to the Priory Hospital for 28 days to be treated for alcoholism. During this time, Blur began the recording sessions that would produce the material for their next album, Think Tank.
In February 2002, Coxon rejoined the band in the studio for the rest of the recording of Think Tank but after five days was asked by then manager Chris Morrison not to go back into the studio as the other members of the band had reported that the session was not going too well with him present.
Coxon took this as a sign and left the band. As he stated in an interview in 2006, "I had a breakthrough, I think my life just became calmer, I gave up drinking.
My priorities changed as I had a young daughter. The group didn't want me to record for the Think Tank album, so I took it as a sign to leave".
His last contribution to Blur was a song called "Battery in Your Leg", the closing song on Blur's 2003 album Think Tank, before leaving the line-up. Damon Albarn later revealed that the song "Sweet Song" was written after he had been looking at a photograph of Coxon.
After Damon Albarn's revealing that he and Coxon had rebuilt their relationship, on 9 December 2008, Blur announced that the whole band would reunite for a show at Hyde Park on 3 July 2009.
More dates were announced and the band played festival dates at Glastonbury, T in the Park and Oxegen 2009 as well as headlining shows in Manchester, Newcastle, Wolverhampton, Goldsmiths College and the East Anglian Railway Museum in Colchester. Blur also played one show in Lyon, France.
On 17 April 2010, the band released their first single since 2003, "Fool's Day", for the Record Store Day event as a 7" limited to 1000 copies.
The band released the single as a free download on their official website the next day.
More recently Blur announced via the NME website that they would reunite every so often and record more singles, preferably on 7 inch. However, Damon also stated that an album was not on its way as they were all too busy with their own individual projects.
On 19 February 2015, Coxon and the band announced on social media that they would be releasing their eighth studio album on 27 April, titled The Magic Whip, Blur's first album in 12 years and first in 16 years in their original lineup.
Solo work
Coxon had already released three solo albums while a member of Blur before his 2002 departure.
His first, The Sky Is Too High was released on his own Transcopic label in 1998.
This was followed by The Golden D in 2000 and Crow Sit on Blood Tree in 2001.
After going solo full-time, he released The Kiss of Morning in 2002. The album was promoted with the single "Escape Song". In 2004, Coxon released his fifth solo album Happiness in Magazines, produced by ex-Blur and The Smiths producer Stephen Street.
This proved to be his most successful album to date, and he received the NME Award for Best Solo Artist in 2005.
In March 2006 he released his sixth solo album, called Love Travels at Illegal Speeds, again produced by Stephen Street. It marked Coxon's first album away from his now-defunct indie label 'Transcopic'.
The LP was preceded by the singles "Standing on My Own Again" on 27 February and "You & I". Coxon embarked on a tour of the UK, starting at Newcastle University.
He was also involved in a single supporting the England national football team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The song was a re-working of the Sham 69 hit "Hurry Up Harry", and was released as "Sham 69 and The Special Assembly" (as well as Coxon and Sham 69, Virgin Radio DJ Christian O'Connell, who had run a competition on his show to find a band to record a song in support of the team, was involved in the recording of the song). "Hurry Up England" entered the UK Singles Chart at No. 10.
In October 2006, Coxon released a double live album Burnt to Bitz: At the Astoria immediately after his sold-out London Astoria show. The album features 27 songs, with at least one song from each of his albums. In July 2007 Coxon released a single with Paul Weller, called "This Old Town". The single peaked at No. 39 in the UK Singles Chart.
Coxon's seventh 15-track studio album titled The Spinning Top, produced again by Stephen Street, was released on 11 May 2009.
Coxon stated that the LP, which is primarily acoustic, followed a narrative – the story of a man from birth to death.
"The album is mainly an acoustic journey although there is, of course, some explosive electric guitar action," he explained. "There are some guests too! Robyn Hitchcock supplies some counter-attack guitar, Jas Singh plays dilruba and jori with his friends Gurjit Sembhi on taus and Jaskase Singh on esraj.
Danny Thompson plays the legendary Victoria, Graham Fox gives plenty of swing on the drums and sizzle cymbals and Louis Vause tinkles the ivories."
Pre-release response had been positive, with Monday Field of Frank Booth Review dubbing the album "a staggering artistic achievement, and Coxon's best solo release to date."
His eighth solo album A+E was released in April 2012.
Coxon wrote and recorded the score for the 2017 Channel 4 / Netflix television series The End of the F***ing World; it was his first original score.
The soundtrack was released in January 2018.
In September of the same year, Coxon embarked on a solo tour in North America that featured some of the songs from his score.
In February 2020, Coxon released an album for the fictional band Bloodwitch, to be a part of the soundtrack of the Netflix series I Am Not Okay with This, featuring singer Tatyana Richaud.
In 2021, Coxon published Superstate, a graphic novel accompanied by a studio album of the same name, bringing the concept of a dystopian futuristic universe. The cover art, much like most of his solo works, was illustrated by himself.
Following in 2023, the folk rock band The Waeve, consisting of Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall as members, released their debut self-titled album, with an England-wide tour.
Transcopic and other contributions
Coxon's independent label, Transcopic, was co-managed with his friend, and then business partner, Jamie Davis. Davis now runs Independent label Ark Recordings.
Coxon illustrated and designed all of his own album art, and collaborated with his friend Nick Craske creating abstract digital work for the release of The Spinning Top; they also filmed two music videos, "Sorrow's Army" and "'In The Morning".
Coxon also continued painting a series of personal work, most of which remained unseen until 2004, when he exhibited at the ICA in London.
Coxon has also been involved in remixing other peoples tracks, including Idlewild and Lowgold both of which were released as b-sides and the latter remix was later re-released on the bands anthology release Keep Music Miserable.
In September 2006, Coxon revealed a musical soundscape, "english shoes squeek", created especially for "Verheaven" an exhibition at London's Riflemaker Gallery of the work of artist Julie Verhoeven.
Coxon appeared on John McCusker's Under One Sky, providing the song "All Has Gone".
In 2009, Coxon was involved in the creation of the Pete Doherty solo album Grace/Wastelands.
Doherty had entered a period of sobriety, during which he holed up with Coxon to work on his debut solo album, Grace/Wasteland, (released 24 March 2009) a diverse collection of 12 songs that bounce between reggae and Doherty's standard post-punk. Coxon played on all but one track on the album.

While this might sound like (just) a fandom post for Taylor Swift, it’s not.
It’s a remark about how social media sways public opinion and how the patriarchy is still alive and well in American society today.
If you’re not listening to Taylor, you cannot objectively claim a lack of talent. You cannot objectively claim she’s overrated. And you definitely cannot claim to not like her “genre” (unless you listen solely to like death metal or trap).
Taylor has recorded 10 studio albums in 17 years. She has fluidly moved between country, pop, rock, synth, hip hop, folk, alternative, and indie genres.
She has written or co-written 243 songs, some in collaboration with or even for such names like: Little Big Town, Miley Cyrus, Sugarland, The Civil Wars, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
In her 200 million records sold, Taylor has won 324 awards, including 12 Grammys, 23 MTV Video Music Awards, 40 American Music Awards, 40 Billboard Music Awards, 12 Country Music Awards, and an Emmy.
She is the most-awarded artist of all times at the AMAs and BMAs, and she ties with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon for most Album of the Year Grammys.
Swift was “the most streamed artist of 2023 on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music; the first act to place number one on the year-end Billboard top artists list in three different decades (2009, 2015 and 2023); and the first living artist to simultaneously chart five albums in the top 10 of the Billboard 200.”
Rolling Stone described Taylor as “a songwriting savant with an intuitive gift for verse-chorus-bridge architecture,” and scholars and critics have compared her to literary figures such as Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, and John Keats, as well as to modern songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.
Over 20 universities include a Taylor Swift course in their catalog, including Harvard, Mizzou, Berkeley, Stanford, and Brigham Young.
Taylor has acted in five movies, headlined six tours, and can play guitar and piano. She has developed, written, and directed several of her own music videos.
She has influenced the music business by revitalizing vinyl records, championing artists’ rights on streaming services, and changing the way label contracts are written. Her journey to take back her intellectual property by re-recording her first six albums is one of the best business and personal decisions any artist has made regarding rights.
She’s not just a talented performer and savvy businesswoman. She is also very human and fights for things she believes in. Taylor speaks up for the rights of women, LGBTQ, and artists.
She has donated millions to charitable relief and philanthropic efforts, as well as to the arts. She generously gave millions of her revenue in bonuses to her Eras Tour team.
She was sexually assaulted by a DJ in Colorado and reported it. The DJ was terminated and sued Taylor for $3 million in damages, so she counter-sued for a symbolic $1 and spent over two years in a legal battle that ended in a jury deciding in her favor. Since then, Taylor has been even more active in fighting for the rights for women to be heard.
She genuinely enjoys her fans and has fun leaving clues and hints in her music to keep her fans engaged and like they’re part of the story. She always seems sincerely delighted to be doing what she’s doing.
Her 17 years in the industry have proven her talent. It shows that she’s earned every fan she has and dollar she’s made. (And if you think she’s only country-pop, then you need to spend a day with Folklore or Evermore.)
If you have a negative reaction towards her as a person, it’s because our society still goes after successful women in a way that men avoid. The media turns on celebrities - especially women - who dare to do things like countersue a sexual assault case, speak against corrupt politicians, or not laugh at misogyny.
I will never apologize for being enchanted by this one. She is a poet, and she’s possibly the most self-aware artist I’ve ever heard speak. 🫶🏻
(ETA: I did not pay for this post. I did not anticipate the shares. And I wasn’t out to seek attention. Why strangers feel the need to message me rude things because I posted on my personal page is beyond me. This is why we can’t have nice things.)

god it so fucked up that I can’t just record a audio post of me talking and post it here but my thoughts are too intense to have to think about it and then type it out so I’m just saying it into my voice text thingy on my phone.
people who complain about Bob Dylan‘s concerts being lame don’t get Bob Dylan. I was talking about this to one of my buddies a couple weeks ago and I was saying like something something something Bob Dylan live something something something and he was like yeah but have you seen Bob Dylan live before and I was like yeah twice and it was great. I loved it and he said oh really? and I was like yeah… I know people are haters, but Bob Dylan has never promised his fans the show that they expect to see. He’s always doing the opposite of what people expect him to do. He’s never gonna play the hits. Shows for him are like the ultimate artistic expression for. It doesn’t matter if you like it. you are the one who paid to see him right. And I understand like some artists, do feel the need to give the crowd what they want because they did pay for it and that is just on a basis by basis sort of deal. I personally don’t care what their outlook on it is. They are the artist and you are the spectator. there’s a certain power dynamic in that and the artist always wins. Great art has never been made by doing what the spectator wants to see, here, experience, etc..
yeah, maybe his voice is gone. But he’s in his fucking 80s. Like what the fuck. You’re asking too much of him. Also Rough and Rowdy Ways is one of the greatest Bob Dylan albums. The sound is great. The band he has is great. The songwriting is superb, and the voice that he has now fits perfectly with the music. He is making right now. And I think it is so fun to watch him bang on the piano and for his band to just be tight and know what they’re doing. and I love how he would come out from behind the piano after every song and pose and then go back and play another song. i saw a man comfortable with what he is doing. and thats what matters.
And now that I’m just on a roll, I feel as though people who dislike Bob Dylan have a superiority complex about it even though they think that Bob Dylan fans have a superiority complex about liking Bob Dylan. every person, at least of my generation that I’ve talk to who is into him has a very personal complicated relationship with his music. It’s not just easy listening. And yeah, Boomers just like Bob Dylan because he’s Bob Dylan sometimes and dont think about it. But I feel like anyone l who goes after a Popular artistp like this just is doing it to make themselves feel cool and different. And they said that it doesn’t make them feel: different but it does. And I understand that and I think everybody has one artist that they are like I don’t get it. I’m just on another level. Like Taylor Swift. also I don’t give a fuck. There are so many layers to this artist as there is to any artist, but especially Bob Dylan where you can’t listen to one album or one song etc. and decide you don’t like it forever and write it off. he has a different sound and he evolves just like every other artist. Leave some room for potential here like it doesn’t have to sit right with you in the moment but it’s, very juvenile to be like I don’t like his voice I don’t like the harmonica, but also like you don’t have to like him even if you do listen to all the fucking albums like it doesn’t matter and it shouldn’t matter stop thinking about it. and I know everyone was talking about whoever it was who was comparing Bruce to Bob Dylan. And I don’t even care if Bruce would think that that’s a lame opinion to think he’s better than Bob. It’s never fair to compare artists to artists, the only arena where you can do that is, if you’re joking or if it’s a lighthearted conversation. I think the world we live in right now with social media, and Paris social relationships has sort of stripped away the sacredness of the art someone makes, and then decides to put out into the world. it’s so deeply entangled with their being even if it’s a silly song or even if it’s not autobiographical. Art comes from the deepest part of your soul. You wouldn’t want to compare souls. Anyways. This took up my entire 30 minute lunch break. I have to pee.

Every time Matty Healy opens his mouth, somebody gets annoyed. Long before his rumoured relationship with international sweetheart Taylor Swift, Healy, the lead singer of the massively irritating pop band The 1975, had mastered the art of winding people up. He has a supple singing voice and is a decent songwriter: but his true vocation, across his decade-plus career, has been treading on strangers’ toes. He’s the Bob Dylan of raising your blood pressure.
Until recently, this was an accepted fact, and nobody cared that he was a bit of an idiot. It was his calling card. You went to see The 1975 because you were partial to their slick, saxophone-fuelled pop – imagine if Radiohead woke one morning and decided they wanted to be a Level 42 covers band – but also because there was a fair chance Healy might do something ludicrous. As he did when he brought his tour to Dublin earlier this year and, in response to an annoying audience chant of “Olé, Olé, Olé,” told 14,000 Irish fans that they were “a simple people”.
Nobody booed; if anything, the crowd lapped it up. Later in the show, Healy, 34, had a slight meltdown and started swinging the mic stand around. In a world where many male rockers want to be a variation of Chris Martin – the colour beige in human form – how refreshing to see a vast, preening ego imploding for our entertainment.
You were reminded that Healy grew up in an acting family: his father, Tim Healy, starred in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Benidorm, and his mother, Denise Welch, is best known as Natalie Barnes from Coronation Street. She’s also done panto – and clearly, some of that knockabout energy has filtered down to her son.
What a rollercoaster ride it was watching him in concert. In between these two extremes of sneery git and man-falling-to-pieces, Healy had briefly addressed the audience. “There’s a story [in the papers] calling me a Nazi tomorrow,” he said. “This is true.”
It was indeed true. Healy had been waving his arms earlier in the tour, and a few tabloids had decided he was giving a Hitler salute. The controversy was ludicrous and flamed out. But another online storm has followed Healy around - and has been intensified by his supposed romance with Taylor Swift. It concerns the New York rapper Ice Spice, whom Healy is accused of mocking in a podcast.
He addressed these claims in a new interview with The New Yorker, which seems to have been commissioned not because of The 1975’s streak of decent albums but because he’s been in the audience of Taylor Swift’s US tour (with Swift having joined The 1975 in London in January).
The singer hadn’t insulted Ice Spice but had laughed when the podcast hosts described her as an “Inuit Spice girl” and a “chubby Chinese lady”. The 23-year-old rapper is, in fact, of African-American and Dominican heritage. The details are obviously irrelevant: it’s self-evidently unacceptable to turn someone’s ethnicity or appearance into a punchline.
Healy had, as was only proper, later apologised publicly – saying he didn’t want Ice Spice, real name Isis Naija Gaston, to think he was a “d---”. But that horse had bolted.
He’s shallow, then – but he has depths. Healy is blisteringly honest about his mental health on The 1975’s 2022 LP, Being Funny In A Foreign Language album as well as reflecting on his years of heroin addiction and his romantic split from singer FKA Twigs.
“Oh, I don’t care if you’re insincere / Just tell me what I want to hear,” he sang on All I Need To Hear, a ballad about his need for human support and connection following a reported breakdown. Later, the Cheshire-raised singer said that it was easier “as an English northern person, to be sardonic in the face of something sincere”. The argument he makes on the new LP is that it’s okay to be corny and fake, if your motives are pure.
He has also gleefully played with ideas of masculinity. On the group’s latest tour, Healy sings against briefly projected images of Prince Andrew and of controversial kick boxer-turned-influencer Andrew Tate, whose toxic machismo Healy appeared to skewer.
But in the New Yorker interview, Healy made the broader point that most of the online controversy he has whipped up over the years has been illusory. In an uncharacteristic display of humility, he explained that people don’t think about him that often.
“It doesn’t actually matter,” he told The New Yorker. “Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy.’ That doesn’t happen.”
What about those people who were genuinely offended, wondered The New Yorker? “You’re either deluded or you are, sorry, a liar. You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt. It’s just people going, ‘Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am.’ And I kind of want them to do that, because they’re demonstrating something so base level.”
Swift and Healy have yet to go on the record with their romance – though Swift has gone public with her admiration for Ice Spice, with whom she recorded a new version of her single Karma. But even without confirmation, the very idea of Swift being with an unreconstructed wind-up merchant of Healy’s calibre has vexed a segment of her fanbase, who have urged her to “actively engage in this process of personal and social transformation”.
This touches on the wider issue of how much say fans should have in the personal lives of pop stars (answer: none at all). It also confirms that Healy is a throwback to an older kind of pop star. There was a time when being outrageous wasn’t a career killer – it was part of the job description. Whether it was Ozzy Osbourne biting off the head of a bat or the Gallaghers launching jibes at Blur (before they turned their artillery on each other), part of the fun of being a pop fan was waiting for your favourite artist’s next outrageous outburst.
Healy understands this is part of his job and hasn’t been found wanting. He’s good at it too. In an age where pop is increasingly a story of the bland leading the bland, it is a talent for which he should be praised rather than pilloried.

TIMING: CURRENT LOCATION: The Vinyl Countdown PARTIES: Leticia @rhythmicmeow & Andy @declinlalune TRIGGERS: parental death SUMMARY: Andy comes into the shop looking to expand her records to include something more than Taylor Swift. Leticia has a few recommendations and opinions to share.
Andy was following a new set of rules. Instead of deciding to turn her back on anything that could be considered an indulgence, she allowed herself to have something every now and again as a means to pretend that she was normal. Most of the time, any money she had went to the piling bills, or the things that she and Alex absolutely needed. Now that Kaden was staying with them, there was a little extra money. It also meant that neither of the sisters needed to steal as much as they used to. It got harder to do it when everyone in town recognized the flaming mop on their heads.
Even though Andy wasn’t the biggest record connoisseur, she was getting tired of the only vinyls laying around being that of Taylor Swift. While she’d never admit to her sister that she wasn’t blondie’s biggest fan, it was about time to put something else on, especially because she’d already spent so much on the damned record player to begin with.
She wasn’t sure what she expected the record shop to smell like, but plastic hadn’t been it. Andy ventured in, wincing slightly as the door shut heavily behind her. The sound of music played lightly over the speakers, and there was a booth in the corner of the shop that had soundproof windows. Inside was a woman– brunette, with a smile that stretched easily across her face, and the kind of equipment that Andy had no idea about. She rose a hand awkwardly to wave at her, not wanting to completely ignore her, before turning to a display of vinyls that said SALE. She flicked through a few of the sleeves, her eyes wandering from cover to cover, all at the expense of finding something she could use to drown out Taylor Swift.
-
Leticia had changed the playlist no less than three times that day. Normally, she had it all set up the night before, it was easier that way when she let the students handle the booth so they didn’t have to improv too much. It was art of the job, but she didn’t have it in her heart to push them to jump in head first. If that was a good thing or not had yet to be seen. But that was a bridge to cross another day. Humming a prelude to a tune, Leticia hit play on the next song, transitioning easily to TRUSTFALL by P!nk.
For a moment, it was just her and the music. Leticia closed her eyes and bobbed her head to the music. If she had gotten a shop closer to the water, it would have been easier to pretend this was their family shop on the West Coast. Leaning back in the chair, she looked toward the records that decorated the shelves above the sound equipment. Signed copies of some of her father’s favorite records. There had been grief attached to those records when she first got them, and while the pain was still fresh, looking at them now put her at ease. A small shrine of the things he loved to remind her of that light.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a woman step into the shop. Leticia immediately hopped to her feet, waving a greeting at the woman before adjusting objects haphazardly in the booth. Stepping into the shop, she offered a sheepish smile. “Sorry, when I’m in that booth it’s like I’m on an entirely different planet sometimes.” Glancing at what the woman was looking at, she arched a brow, “Looking for anything specific? I could tell you if it’s in there or is this a ‘drown out everything at all costs’ sort of shopping experience?”
-
Andy continued to flick through a few of the remaining sleeves before the door to the booth opened. “Hm? No, it’s okay.” This woman gave her the same feeling that both Luis and Nicole had. It was getting easier to ignore, just as it had been with Alex, but there was still something that stirred in the pit of her stomach; she likened it to guilt for the sake of an easy conversation without too much paranoia.
She looked past the woman and into the booth, watching as the lights across what Andy figured was some kind of keyboard flickered all in different colors, then her gaze slid back to the brunette. “Uhhh… anything but Taylor Swift.” She winced and cleared her throat, not knowing the woman’s stance on her. “My sister already owns a few of her vinyls, or maybe all of them. I have no clue. Figure it was time to let something else play.”
She should have had a better idea of what she wanted so that she wasn’t wasting the woman’s time. Andy knew it was her job, but she felt guilty regardless. She’d clearly been experiencing something in the booth with a smile that wide.
-
“I am afraid that your luck is about to get a lot worse,” Leticia replied, the smile on her face a shade more sympathetic. “She’s coming out with a new Taylors’ version here soon. I forgot the release date but it’s just around the corner — so friendly warning.” As much as she enjoyed Taylor Swift herself, around new release time it was a lot to deal with on the radio. Two or three songs would overpower the album popularity and they’d all be listening to those songs on the hour, every hour. Hopefully, the redhead’s sister wasn’t going to fixate on just a few songs.
“Hm.” Tapping her chin, she scrolled mentally through her favorite albums that she often recommended, but other than Swift, there wasn’t much to go on. “Have  you listened to music a lot or is the Swiftie in your family the only exposure you have?” There was no judgment there, it wouldn’t be the first time that Leticia had heard they didn’t understand or enjoy music that much. She would even have been the first one to confess to listening to Disney soundtracks exclusively.
Walking through the small aisles, Leticia looked for a middle ground for this woman and her sister. Imagine Dragons, maybe? “I’ve got a player in the back too, if you want to sample some of the music. Most everything is open already outside of the new releases.”
-
“Shit.” Andy rubbed the back of her neck. She knew that despite her aversion to Taylor Swift, she would probably end up surprising Alex with the album if it did end up on vinyl. “I guess she’s gotta make money somehow.” She hoped she hadn’t made an ass of herself by making such a comment, but really, what did it matter? It was just music. The only music that had consistently followed her around was the Tom Petty tape lodged in her jeep’s cassette player. The vehicle had been sold to her that way by a man in Michigan, and she had to admit, it was better than some of the other options she could have gotten stuck with, even if she didn’t always consider herself a connoisseur of its usual genre.
“I mean, I listen to music.” Usually the radio, thanks to the tape, or the playlist she would put on her phone and just turn up the volume real loud. “Can you imagine? If that was the only thing I knew?” Andy snorted, mortified by the thought. “We just mostly own her vinyls, I wanted something else to put on… gotta use the thing I paid for, right?” Hooking her phone up to the bluetooth speakers she’d gotten on discount could easily fix the problem, but she wanted to enjoy the simplicity of a record scratch and the way the needle would just know the song. It was still a mystery to her how it worked. Andy followed after the woman– who she figured was the owner of the shop, and looked over her shoulder at the mix of genres. “Do you have anything like Pink Skies? It was something to go off of for her, maybe Andy should have started there. “Or uh, CHVRCHES?”
-
“Hey, you know some people have been asking for the ten minute versions of those old songs for ages.” The words were accompanied by a laugh. On a professional level, Leticia could respect it. Fans had asked for these extended versions and actual fans were beyond excited that it was finally happening. But Leticia couldn't imagine putting out that much music at once. Did this woman have time to breathe? “Gotta respect the work she puts into it, I mean, she’s re-recording a full album and it feels like she just released one. Her energy makes me feel like I’m a grandma.” She checked the tips of her hair, wondering if she’d spot a streak of white.
Looking over her shoulder, it was like a light went off in the back of her mind. Leticia put back the records she had been pulling out and changed directions entirely. “I don’t have indie music sorted down more than that unfortunately, but I do have a section over here.” Leticia moved quickly to the other row and started flipping through titles. “I do have a CHVRCHES vinyl, but…” She pulled CHVRCHES out and offered it to the woman while digging through the records with her free hand. “Tokyo Tea Room has a similar vibe if I remember correctly.” She pulled the other record out and then turned fully to the other woman.
-
“Aging is normal though, right?” Growing up, it had been drilled into the sisters that their kind didn’t live very long. Either you lived long enough to morph into a coward, or you died early enough to become a martyr. Andy knew that wasn’t the way she wanted to live– with the idea of dying and that being something honorable at a certain age. It was stupid. Maybe luck wasn’t the right word regarding hers and Alex’s situation, but they’d been able to avoid the mentality that their worth was tied directly to how good or bad of a hunter they would turn out to be. Who knew, maybe Andy’s abhorrence towards hunting would get her killed, but at least she wouldn’t die following some arbitrary code that, funnily enough, got her parents killed. It was fucked up to think like that, and she knew it, but the constant prickle at her skin while being next to the woman was a constant reminder. It was hard to disregard.
Andy backed up slightly as the woman turned around, heading in a different direction. “Oh, that’s fine, I’m sure I’ll be able to find something I recognize.” And if not, she could always listen to a new artist. Andy followed after her, curiosity pulling over her features as she craned her neck to get a look over the woman’s shoulder to see the vinyl she was pulling out. Andy held the Bones of What You Believe in her hands, turning it over with a smile. “Tokyo Tea Room? I don’t think I’ve ever listened to them.” She took the record from her and looked it over. It was just an EP, but that wouldn’t bother Andy. If she liked a song enough, she’d have it on repeat for hours. “Forever out of Time… always tomorrow. I’m sensing a theme.” She looked up at the woman with a smile. “What kind of music do you listen to?” It was easier to focus on the topic at hand than the feeling she brought on, so she cleared her throat. “And uh– sorry, my name is Andy, by the way.”
-
“Most people just release a greatest hits album,” Leticia commented lightly, but it wasn’t lost on her that this woman was talking about something else entirely. Much like the teasing with Emilio about how he’d have gray hairs before he knew it, there was something painful about aging. Are you okay? Was on the tip of her tongue, but the words never formed. This wasn’t a bar where Leticia was providing a distraction or a place where they were equals — she was a customer. And once again, Leticia was painfully reminded that she needed to keep some air of professionalism. A demand from her business that she was slowly starting to resent.
The smile was enough for Leticia to push the brief concern from earlier out of her mind. Letting herself believe it was nothing. Just… a moment. A small crack. “It’s a good theme,” she offered, watching her expression as she looked over the disc. “Plus it offers some consistency so there’s no weird audio spikes in different songs.” If Leticia had one complaint about current music, it would have been that. “Leticia,” she offered in response. “Mostly I’ve been listening to Imagine Dragons. Some Lizzo here and there… The Chainsmokers too, guilty pleasure don’t judge me.” At the end, she shrugged. “It really depends on the mood of the day, but I prefer something I can sing to. I’m not good at casual listening.”
-
“Audio spikes?” Andy wasn’t familiar with the term, if it even was one. Maybe the woman had made it up. She seemed to be allowed to do that, she owned the shop after all. Maybe she meant that the volume got louder at certain parts of a song where it was usually quieter? “Leticia.” The name was pretty, and it held more class than Andy did, even if her full name had been Andrea— one she hadn’t spoken in over a decade for the sake of simplicity and safety. “It’s nice to meet you.” Because it was– like many people in Wicked’s Rest, Leticia was opening a world to Andy that she hadn’t known existed, or hadn’t been allowed to exist within, and it was just human, even if Leticia was not.
“I like Lizzo, but I’m not sure I’ve listened to the other two.” Something about thunder came to mind at the mention of Imagine Dragons, though, so maybe she had heard them. The Chainsmokers was a bust, though. “I get it. When I’m driving into work it’s nice to have something to keep me interested then something I drown out.” Tom Petty had quickly become background music rather than listening music for how long it’d been stuck in the player. “Do you sing? Or are you talking in more of a karaoke way?” Andy wanted to ask if she owned Vinyl Countdown, but she wasn’t sure if that was too forward.
-
Looking upward, Leticia tried to think of another way to describe it. “I’m not sure if that’s the word for it, but have you ever listened to something very, very quiet and then the next thing that plays is super loud? Usually if it’s all in one song it’s pretty balanced, but depending on the artist and their style - a bunch of things really - every song might not have that same level of audio.” She was overexplaining and she realized it after she was done rambling. Clearing her throat, she shrugged, pretending like she didn’t just dive face first into music. “Music with less jumpscares.” A worse explanation.
“Lizzo is excellent driving music, and on your way to work music.” It was a little funny to her that Andy had listened to one but not the other two, only because they were both frequent radio plays. “Exactly,” Leticia agreed easily. “You need - well I need - something more than coffee to kickstart my energy. Music always does the trick.” Music was a safety net that was always there, something that pushed her forward and something that held her when she fell. There was always a song to match the mood and help her sort herself out. Shrugging her shoulders, Leticia met Andy’s gaze, “Karaoke mostly these days.” There was a hint of sadness in her words. She missed singing, she missed the stage and meeting the fans and having that sense of being wanted.
-
Okay, so she’d been right. “Yeah, I have. Always makes me jump out of my skin.” Andy’s hearing was amplified, so when loud noises like that did happen, it made it hard to ignore them. “Music with less jumpscares…” Andy let out a laugh and nodded, “I can get behind that.” Maybe it was why Alex liked Taylor Swift. Her music, for the most part, was quiet and boring, and really, not much to jump at. “I’ve never thought of it that way, though.”
“You listen to music in place of caffeine?” She quirked a brow and nodded as if in some kind of agreement. “Not sure that’d work for me, but hey, you do you.” As soon as the words left her, Andy felt dumb. Here she was, faced with a pretty girl who was knowledgeable about all of the things that Andy wasn’t and she couldn’t come up with something better? “What’s your wake-up music, usually? Is it Lizzo? Or… one of the other two?” She looked down at the vinyls in her hands, not sure where either of these albums landed in the scale of wake up music. At Leticia’s comment, Andy looked back up into her eyes. “I’m sure you’re awesome though.” Whether or not that’s what Leticia wanted to hear, Andy couldn’t be sure. “At karaoke. At other things, too. Obviously.” Was it obvious? Andy cleared her throat and smiled at the woman in front of her. “Do you ever host them? Karaoke nights?” Was that something a record shop did? She knew there was a karaoke bar downtown, but maybe Leticia had a history in it, too.
-
There was a sheepish look on Leticia’s face that was hard to shake. When it was her dad in the shop talking about music, his passion seemed so easy. It made her wonder if he had ever felt like he over shared the way she did when she got lost in the details. But Andy was either too nice to say anything or didn’t care that she had gone off on a tangent. Either way, Leticia appreciated it. “I used to go to sleep listening to music, sort of like…” Too much explanation, she reminded herself, but continued anyway. Might as well considering she already opened her mouth. “Something of comfort, I guess. Fell asleep to the wrong album once.”
Leticia shrugged dramatically at the question. “I mean, what else can get my blood pumping like screaming Carry On Wayward Son? Nothing.” Andy didn’t feel the same, but that was okay. It had been a while since she was surrounded by people who didn’t feel the same way about music as she did, but it was nice in a way. Different opinions. Different thoughts. Different people, most of all. “Lizzo,” she answered easily this time. “Waking up to a song about how men ain’t shit? Best way to start the day.” There was a short beat after the next comment, where Leticia paused. It wasn’t the strangest thing to hear, but not something anyone threw around at her like they did when she was actively making music. It felt… different. “Obviously,” she teased lightly before nodding her head. “But thank you.” Two words that she nearly choked on after she said them. This was the wrong town to let something like that slip. “No, don’t host them. I’ve been thinking about going to the place just down the street, but I’d feel bad cleaning house with an unfair advantage.” No one would likely know, but Leticia would. “What about you? I figure music might not be your regular comfort, any artistic callings?”
-
“Don’t tell me you fell asleep to something terrible like Dua Lipa.” Andy didn’t really think that her music was terrible, it was fun to dance in the kitchen to, but to fall asleep to it would be a feat on its own. Andy really needed to keep her mouth shut, she realized. What if Leticia worshiped Dua? “Not that she isn’t fun to listen to, but not sure how much sleep I’d get with the… audio spikes?”
“I’m not sure I know that song.” Andy had missed out on a lot, and this seemed like one of those things. “But I trust you.” The way Leticia spoke about music, it stirred something in the pit of Andy’s stomach. She wanted to talk about something that way. Not someone, because she would praise Alex to the moon and back all day every day, but something. She had always felt like she was missing something, and maybe this was it– to care for something without using it as an excuse for something else. The bakery was nice, but it was a means to put food on the table, and while she enjoyed Jonas and Lil, she had only really taken the job because she was above average when it came to baking. Not because she was in love with it. Leticia seemed to be in love with music, and while Andy was a little jealous, she didn’t show it.
“You’re right, it really is.” She couldn’t imagine waking up to anything other than her alarm tone. Maybe she should try it and get back to Leticia. Andy nodded, a little disappointed that Leticia didn’t seem to be in the business for karaoke. “I’ve never been, but I have heard it’s a good time.” Maybe I’ll see you there. The words died at the back of her throat. She perked up slightly at Leticia’s question, trying to come up with an answer. “Artistic callings and me? In the same sentence?” Andy scoffed, shaking her head. “No, not really. I bake, but that’s… a job, so no.” She looked down at the vinyls in her hands. She felt stupid for not knowing enough about music, and for clearly not being cool enough for this conversation. “Maybe I’ll find out I’m really good at the triangle one day, though.” What she wanted to tell this complete stranger was that she’d never been afforded the luxury of hobbies, so she hadn’t ever learned if she was good at anything. “I guess I haven’t poisoned anyone with the bear claws– at uh, Bread Cemetery, I help… there. Well, I work there. I don’t just help. I’m a baker’s assistant.” Her ears turned red.
-
At first, Leticia made a face and it stayed a little while longer while Andy backtracked all of her opinions. The serious expression on her face crumbled quickly as she laughed. “It’s okay,” she said, touching Andy’s shoulder to reassure the other woman. “You’re allowed to have preferences. They might be wrong but that’s okay. But I draw the line at Halsey, if you had any bad thoughts about her no you don’t.”
There was an undeniable look of confusion on Leticia’s face at the comment. Even people who weren’t into music as much as she was knew at least some of the words. “I’ll play it for you sometime,” she decided. The best part of music was sharing it with someone. Her father had taught her that in spades at the shop back home, the door was always propped open for the public and was always putting something into their patrons hands to leave with. A few cords on the guitar, an offer for a free lesson for the kids, always encouraging them to at least try. Making music wasn’t always for everyone, but he was convinced that everyone could form a connection with music. “If you’re interested,” she then added. “I’m always ready to drag someone into this. As long as you’re willing.”
Andy had an interesting idea, Leticia wasn’t sure she could juggle everything she did at the shop plus start hosting events like that, but maybe she could partner with the place downtown. But as she puzzled out the details internally, she realized there was a huge shift in the conversation tone wise. Andy was fumbling for an answer and Leticia felt guilty. She hadn’t intended this question to pull the rug out from under the other woman. With some quick thinking, Leticia shrugged a shoulder and offered a comforting smile. “I sang professionally for years, doesn’t disqualify it from being something I love.” Fiddling with the corners of one of the record covers, Leticia bobbed her head to the side, thinking for a moment longer. “Besides, if you haven’t found it yet, that just means you get to have fun and explore some other hobbies.”
Leticia hated the idea that Andy might leave the building feeling like what she was doing wasn’t enough. “You know, I send one of the guys over every morning to fetch us breakfast from there. And the bear claws happen to be my favorite. And apple fritters. I pretend they’re healthy, but … well, you know.” Which wasn’t a lie by any stretch of the imagination. She sent one of her employees every morning, carefully rotating them so that the business wouldn’t catch on that it was her every single day. “Maybe I’ll start coming in myself.”
-
Andy fought off the urge to tense as Leticia touched her shoulder. Instead, she kept the eased expression and leaned into it slightly. “Hey, I just said that it might be hard to fall asleep to her, not that her music was bad.” She didn’t want to think about just how well Leticia could hear. She didn’t want to think about the way she could sense the other woman at all. Just like every other shifter in town, it felt like an invasion of privacy. Andy raised her hands in mock defense. “No opinions on Halsey.”
“Yeah, okay.” Andy nodded at Leticia’s offer. She looked at the window of the booth quickly, memorizing the radio station’s frequency. She’d need to listen sometime. Maybe coming here for music suggestions or vinyls had been moot– maybe Andy would make an attempt to let the radio play instead of finding a reason to turn it off. “No, sure, I’d love that.” Maybe she was a little too enthusiastic, because her smile grew a little wider. This was a woman just trying to make a sale. Andy had already fully intended on purchasing the two vinyls she was holding, and realistically, if Leticia smiled at her just a little more, she might buy a third. It had taken a long time for Andy to block out the reactions that her parents might have to this kind of thing, but eventually she got to the point where she realized it didn’t matter. They were gone, and this was the life she lived now.
“Really? That’s… badass.” Andy did want to know more, but if she’d quit singing to move to a small town to open up a vinyl shop doubling as a radio station, Andy wasn’t sure that the story was much of a good one, and if there was one thing Andy believed in, it was to not make people relive their traumas. “Mmm, you have a point.” Even if Andy never let herself have much, she knew that the other woman was right. With Kaden around, it meant that Andy wouldn’t have to be so focused on money. Not that she’d ever admit that it was something she was worried about. She always appeared relaxed when it came to finances.
Andy bit the inside of her cheek as Leticia explained her love for both the bear claws and the apple fritters. “They’re really good, aren’t they? They aren’t my recipe, but I try my best with them.” She smiled at Leticia, her gaze lingering on the other woman for a beat too long. Even though Andy wasn’t letting any of her anxieties show through in her appearance, the other woman seemed to be aware of how she was actually feeling. It felt… nice. Not so much to be observed, but to be listened to. Even if her expression displayed something else entirely. “You should.” She said it a little too quickly and the red on her ears deepend. “I mean, you should, really. We’re.. doing an event for pride, too.” Andy smiled at Leticia, then froze. “I mean– it’s just an event we’re doing, I’m not saying that–” She shook her head and pressed the vinyls to her chest. “Anyway, that’d be cool. If you started to come by yourself. I mean, you can bring– him? Your employee? Too, if you want.” What a fucking mess.
-
“Uh-huh,” Leticia replied with a grin. “So, terrible to sleep to but not terrible?” It would take a lot more to actually offend her, just like Leticia knew that not everyone was as comfortable existing as she did. Taking everything at face value, and mostly as a joke. For a long time, it had been a defense mechanism. Interviews had been the hardest part of the job for her, sitting across someone who would ask deeply personal questions and then sometimes outright insult her, she had to learn to be untouchable.
Some days, Leticia wasn’t sure that was such a good thing. But for the little things like this, it wasn’t so bad, was it?
“I’ll make sure it gets added to the playlist.” And Leticia would leave a strongly worded note to not remove it when one of the others were in the booth. As much as she loved letting the students get the practice in and mess around with the nightly music, they always found a way to pull out the one song that Leticia had been desperate to air. They were bloodhounds, she was sure of it. The thought crossed her mind to ask Andy when she listened to the radio or when she’d have time, but there was a line there that Leticia told herself not to cross. It was one thing to be friendly, another to be invasive.
“Yeah, I guess it is.” Leticia could remember a time when it was all she wanted. When all the reaching she did for the stars was suddenly within her grasp. It had only been months since she ran off stage in New York. Maybe time moved differently here, maybe she was different here, but it felt like ancient history. A piece of herself that she would always be missing. Another fracture line in the life she had thought had been perfect for years. “I guess I should find a new hobby too.” Though the excitement wasn’t there as it had been when she had hyped up Andy to look into exploring her interests. If anything, there was a hint of distress in her tone.
But the tone didn’t last. Food, as always, brightened the mood. “Amazing. Listen, the recipes are just what’s written on the page. The heart of the food comes from the chef. That’s what ma always told me, anyway. Mostly when I was pissed off in the kitchen… she said my mood soured the food.” Leticia trailed off, getting derailed from the first point. “Wait, they do pride here? I figured the school might do something for the students but I wasn’t sure if the rest of the town was.” Her expectations had been low for Wicked’s Rest, assuming that it would be like her small town back home where people just talked about it but had to leave the city if they actually wanted to celebrate. Leticia wrinkled her nose at the suggestion and then shrugged. “I mean, I guess. It would be the nice thing to do, right?” She mulled it over, trying not to look as annoyed at the idea as she felt. But the idea of spending her off hours time with a teenage employee was not her idea of an ideal day out. In fact, it was much closer to a nightmare. They were great kids, but there was only so much pseudo-parenting she could do before she lost it.
-
“Yeah, only about sleeping.” Andy noticed the amused expression that Leticia wore and she felt a little more at ease. She was glad that she wasn’t totally backing herself into a corner. Andy didn’t have many friends, and maybe stumbling over her words had been why. Usually she was good at talking people into circles– she had excelled at it while she and Alex were on the road, but over time it’d gotten a little harder to do. Maybe it was because of the roots she’d put down, or maybe it was because she was faced with a pretty girl with a pretty smile. “I’ll be looking forward to it, then. I’ll come in and let you know my thoughts.” What if she did know the song? Then she’d look like an idiot showing up to tell Leticia that she had inadvertently lied. She didn’t need to worry about that now, she decided.
Leticia wasn’t exactly subtle about her inward disappointment and Andy hoped she hadn’t said something wrong. “Maybe we can compare hobbies.” The words came out before she’d really processed them and Andy inwardly kicked herself. “I’ll swing by, buy a vinyl, update you on how my woodworking is going, you can let me know on whatever you pick out.” It seemed innocent enough. She wasn’t sure where woodworking had come from, but after asking the florist if she could use his scraps of wood to make planters, she realized it had become something she’d gotten excited about.
Andy snorted. “That’s… that kind of makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. Good intentions and all that, right?” She wasn’t sure what kind of intentions she had when she was heating up a bowl of canned ravioli, but sometimes it tasted better than others. “I’ll use that. Make sure I’m in a good mood when I’m making them.” At Leticia’s question, Andy nodded. “We do! Every year. Different shops put on events, the town does something, too. It’s not… like New York or anything, but it’s nice.” Andy hadn’t ever been to New York. Neither she or Alex were big city people. “It was just a suggestion, I mean… you wouldn’t have to if you didn’t want to?” Andy bit her lip and thought for a moment. “If I’m not working, I’ll make sure to let them know to give you a discount, though. If you do come in. Hopefully I’ll be there, but, you know.” Andy shrugged.
-
“Alright, alright.” Leticia finally conceded. It was her turn to hold her hands up in a mock surrender position. But ‌she still grinned as though the suspicion hadn’t been fully cleared. “I believe you.” It didn’t go without saying one more time: “Just know I would still support your wrong opinions.” Her father would have told her to stop teasing the customers, but he would have also had Andy already sitting down with an instrument in her hand with some motivating speech about how she wouldn’t know until she tried so she might as well give it a shot. “I’ll hold you to that.”
Leticia shrugged. “You could just come in. I mean, I won’t tell you not to buy anything, but music is a social thing too. The best part is sharing it, for me at least.” She quickly added the last part, forgetting this wasn’t about her. And not to mention it was a terrible way to run a business. “Look at you! See, you already have an idea.”
It took a moment to process, but at first there was a frown, a look of betrayal, and then a small smile that broke through. “You’re agreeing with my mom?” There was comfort in it though, something warm in her chest, knowing maybe her mom would have people here too. This place wasn’t the home they had in California. But with some work, it could be. If they let it. “Yeah, I’m probably going to ditch him,” she admitted, though sheepishly. “He’s a good kid but..” Leticia bobbed her head to the side, considering her words for a moment. “Not exactly who I want to be spending my free time with.” The thought was nice, but Leticia quickly shook her head. “No, no, if you do that, I am going to buy more than I should. Then I’ll have to lie to people and say I’m sharing when I absolutely will not be doing that.”  -
Andy shrugged. “Maybe these two vinyls are what get me started in taking over every single shelf space at my place.” There weren’t many shelves, but she could always make more. She would need to clear some space in the upstairs loft space, too, for Kaden. She had already felt bad about him staying on the couch, but she wasn’t originally sure how long he’d be sticking around for. After their conversation, she was sure she wanted to keep him around for as long as he wanted to stay around. “Maybe talking about our hobbies is what’ll get me spending every dime, who’s to say.” She flashed Leticia a smile.
Even if her own mother hadn’t ever been right about anything, maybe somebody else’s mom had been. Even though she felt her chest stir with something– mourning, maybe, her expression remained bright. Andy shrugged. “Maybe I am.” She obviously didn’t know Leticia’s situation, so she didn’t dare bring her mother up as some kind of present thing. The number of orphans in Wicked’s Rest was alarming. “Yeah, that’s fair. Kids can be annoying.” Alex could be annoying, but Andy loved her anyway. Andy shook her head and let out a laugh. “Hey, we’ve got stuff going on all month, so I’m sure you’ll be handed a discount regardless.” Whether it came from herself, Lil, or Jonas, that’d be the question. “Eat as many as you want, I won’t tell.” Andy looked down at the vinyls again with a fond smile. “Appreciate your help finding these. Now that I know you’re over here– the shop, I mean,” Andy stammered, “I’ll make sure to swing by more often.”
-
“It’s a dangerous and expensive hobby. If you’re not careful you might.” But having a regular customer like Andy was the furthest one could be from a bad thing. Leticia had been so worried when she opened the shop that it would be just another dot on the map, but as she started to settle in and got to know the other members of the community… the more this felt like home and not a punishment for a mistake she had unwillingly made. “You start buying that many records and I’ll set up a rewards system just for you. Buy five and get the sixth free, or something. Or maybe I’ll accept woodwork as payment.” The last line was more teasing than the rest, but it would still be nice to see what work she did if she went full throttle on the woodworking.
“Dios mio! She’s not even in town, you don’t need to kiss up to her already.” Her mother, she was sure, would hate the shop but she would adore Andy. If she ever came here. Leticia told herself that her mother was fine, it was the only way she could function. She’d be there someday. And people like Andy and Emilio and so many others would change her mind about hiding from the world. “They’re great, don’t get me wrong… but yeah. I didn’t sign up to be a mom. Maybe a wine aunt.” Leticia laughed and nodded her head. “It’s okay. I come with the shop. Either way you’re stuck with me.” It was a scenario where Leticia was sad to see her go, but happy that she had shown up. It was a welcome reprieve. “Let’s get your rung up so you can get out of here.”

What you can't hear is my boyfriend (dressed as Matt) taking these photos, saying "Yeah babe, you should do that gun thing with your tongue"
Anyway, that's a wrap on Galaxy Con Richmond! Sleep-deprived and beat, but I had an absolute blast this weekend! Got to spend the weekend cosplaying with my boyfriend and hanging out with some of my favorite people. Cosplayed as my favorite 2000s bad boy, Mello; Lip-sync battled to Blank Space by Taylor Swift, went feral at the Emo night (turned mosh pit/seance) rave, bought some really cool art, and met a ton of Death Note fans.
Tag me in photos/videos if we took some together 🖤
P.S Long live my homie Bob, he went hard in that pit IYKYK

Alright, I'll respond to your anon. It's gonna be long so I apologize.
Bob Dylan, inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winner of a Nobel Prize, a Medal of Freedom, a Légion d'Honneur, a Premio Princesa de Asturias and a special Pulitzer, one of Time's 100 Most Important People of The Century, is just a folk singer and less relevant than Taylor Swift? Please. May I suggest anon educates themselves? They could start from this very quick read from 2016, a list of reasons why Bob Dylan is the most important figure in pop-culture history by a trade in anon's country, the UK, in which according to anon Dylan somehow would be basically a nobody.
https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/70-reasons-why-bob-dylan-is-the-most-important-figure-in-popculture-history-a2311956.html
I'm going to quote just a few:
- Because when Martin Luther King Jr gave his legendary "I have a dream" speech, Dylan wasn't just in the audience, he was on stage a few feet from Dr King, having just sung "Only a Pawn in Their Game" and "Blowin' in the Wind".
- Because The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was such a huge influence on The Beatles. "We just played it, just wore it out," said George Harrison. "The content of the song lyrics and just the attitude – it was incredibly original and wonderful." John Lennon said: "For three weeks... we didn't stop playing it. We went potty about Dylan."
- Because he wrote "Like a Rolling Stone", frequently voted the greatest single of all time, and a song whose seismic impact in the pop scene of 1965 was like the drawing back of a curtain.
- Because, with his last album, Together Through Life, he became the oldest performer to debut at No 1 on the US album chart, and the oldest performer to top both UK and US charts simultaneously.
- Because he remains the most frequently covered songwriter of modern times.
And very relevant to the movie biopic Timmy is going to play him into:
- Because he had the balls to take an electric blues band on stage with him at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and crank up the volume. This became one of the landmark events in rock history. Dylan's marriage of rock music and folk literacy effectively laid the blueprint for the soundtrack to the whole counter-cultural experiment.
In this day and age, when knowledge is just one click away, it's inexcusable to be so ignorant about history. And doubling down on a bad take instead of at least googling the artist you're belittling is even more inexcusable. I'm sure Taylor Swift would be happy to accomplish even a tiny bit of what Bob Dylan has.
Portraying Bob Dylan will be a huge honor for Timothée, much more than portraying Spiderman or a Hobbit, with all respect to those characters and their fans.
👏👏👏👏👏👏

Marla Lewis Mesmerizes with New Single "Te Quiero a Ti"
Tumblr media
New Jersey-born sensation Marla Lewis, celebrated for her extraordinary career as a singer, songwriter, and educator, is back with her latest single, “Te Quiero A Ti.”
Available in both Spanish and English, this enchanting track is a testament to Marla’s versatile talent and musical brilliance.
"Te Quiero A Ti" has an irresistible groove and ambiance and beautiful vocals from Marla Lewis. The sophisticated arrangement features flute, piano, acoustic bass, electric guitar, drums, and rich backing vocals.
Initially, Marla composed the melody but struggled with the lyrics until her friend Dave Kinnoin provided the perfect words. This collaboration was first featured on her debut "Songbook" album. Marla always dreamed of a Spanish version, which became a reality when she met Melissa Sanley, who used the original instrumental tracks:
"My life was touched by a real-life angel -- that's the best way to describe it! I signed up for a Peer Networking program offered by the Grammy organization (I'm a voting member), and they paired me with Melissa Sanley. Talk about Divine intervention! A superb singer, songwriter, recording artist -- she speaks four languages, and now she is my voice teacher! But I digress -- I played her a song from my first Songbook album to see if she liked it enough to translate it into Spanish. It had some Spanish words in the lyrics that were written by Dave Kinnoin (I wrote the melody). She told me the title was not correct Spanish! OMG! She changed it to "Te Quiero a Ti," translated the lyrics, coached me on every line, created the cover art, sang backup vocals, and made the lyric video!”
Marla's music is a rich blend of styles and she takes influence from big band, global folk music, and some of the musical big names like Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles, Laura Nyro, Carole King, James Taylor, Michael Franks, and Phoebe Snow.

"Te Quiero a Ti" was written by Marla Lewis, Dave Kinnoin, and Melissa Sanley and produced by Bob Stander.
About Marla Lewis
Tumblr media
Marla Lewis' musical journey began in 1953 when she played "Chopsticks" on the piano and started taking piano lessons. That same year she sang "S'Wonderful, S'marvelous" on the TV show "Live Like a Millionaire." In 1961, she wrote her first song, "Hopeless Love," and by 1963 began taking guitar lessons at the YMHA and dedicated herself to music.
From 1977 to 1987, she was performing solo in clubs, coffee houses, and colleges, but felt like I was going nowhere. In 1987, she started teaching English as a Second Language in NYC public schools. During this period, she wrote songs to help children learn English, released three critically acclaimed children's albums, and which won numerous songwriter awards.
In 2004, Marla met producer Bob Stander, who played a pivotal role in her artistic development. After retiring from teaching in 2010, and returning to her musical roots she began writing prolifically. In 2012, she co-wrote "Leap of Faith" with Nancy Schimmel, which was featured on the GRAMMY-winning album "All About Bullies...Big and Small," winning Best Children's Album.
In 2019, she started working with Modern Musician and gained 1.2K fans in her Facebook private group. She released her first smooth jazz album, "Songbook," in 2021. Two years later, Marla released "Songbook Vol. 2," with the single "Enchantee" reaching #1 on the World Indie chart and #2 on the Euro Indie chart.
The English version of "Te Quiero a Ti" is currently #24 on the World Indie Charts!
