I’m a few days late on posting this. 5/26/17 was the first date of the @nickcaveofficial tour! Their management hit me up to design the tour poster. The poster was only available to the people that bought the VIP package - which also included a ticket to the show and a laminate with my work on it!!! . This was a HUGE project for me. I LOOOOOOOOOOVE #NICKCAVE ’s music!! LOVE! So to get a chance to design a poster again for him was an honor. Even better - it was for the whole tour! In 2014 I got to design the poster for their Milwaukee, WI show! . If you scroll through you - can see the photo reference I took of my homie @a.sinners.heart posing as Nick Cave’s stunt double. He was in town when I started working on the project. . From there I sketched everything out in my sketchbook with a @prismacolor #colerase pencil. I had a small meltdown until my homie @dave_crosland talked me down from the ledge and helped me make sense of my composition. Then I lightboxed it onto 8.5 x 11 #bristolboard and inked it with a @winsorandnewton series 7 sable brush. Then scanned it in at 600 dpi and did the coloring & color seps in photoshop! . Oh included is the alternate sketch I submitted but they felt the portrait of Cave was a better fit. NEVER THROW AWAY YOUR SKETCHES! I ended up using this for the @themurdercitydevils poster a few months later. WIN/WIN! . I was lucky enough to see the first date of the show with my best homie and amazing animator @crankbunny at the @kingsbklyn Such a beautiful theatre!!! Into My Arms

A really beautiful song, it has one of the best opening lines to a song ever. “ I don’t believe in an interventionist God, but I know, darling, that you do. But if I did I would kneel down and ask him not to intervene when it came to you”. It has such powerful and romantic notations and I love how moving Nick’s lyrics are. I can’t wait to hear it live because it just sounds amazing. He’s a genius, Nick Cave.

Far From Me

Love this song off the Boatman’s Call, it’s an album full of heartbreak and emotion and Cave pulls it off so well.You can tell it’s what he’s been through himself and It’s a song which shows this release. A song which shows hurting at how they’ve been left and treated, “Did you ever care for me?” It has this hurting throughout, with an amazing backing track(love the bassline), recommend it definitely.

Here’s the sketch for the @nickcaveofficial VIP tour poster. They were only available by purchasing the VIP package. I’ll have my ARTIST COPIES available on my site SOON. So yeah… ***Sign up for my newsletter at brianewing.com *** When the management and promoter contacted me they were specific that I don’t draw anything too dark. Considering what has been going on with Cave’s personal life - I understood. I wanted to distance myself from the #anatomical style I had been running with for the past few years - which I used on the 2014 poster I did for the band. That stuff is too dark. Plus, with all of the tattooing I’ve been doing, I wanted to show people (aka prove to myself and my #selfdoubt) that I can draw. The management asked me to write my ideas instead of sketch them and they would then pick the idea they liked best. That was actually fun. Some of the ideas that didn’t get chosen were used for other posters (or will be soon.) #neverthrowawayyoursketches We narrowed it down to a few ideas and then finally they went with #NickCave pounding away at a typewriter as if he were playing a piano. Since he’s an author and a musician it made sense to me. Happy that they liked the idea. I don’t do likenesses too often so I’m very happy that I nailed it right away. My good buddy Brandon @a.sinners.heart was in town so I recruited him to pose as the rest of Cave. He’s tall and gangly too! For better or worse, I work mostly in my sketchbook before transferring the drawing to bristol board. I’m clumsy and I’ll lose anything that isn’t chained to a cinder block - so that’s why I like working in a #sketchbook. #MichaelKaluta once wrote a great essay on why sketchbooks are important.
