ELSEWHERE...
Santa Monica Pier! A staple landmark of Los Angeles for the past 100 years old, this waterfront is ¼ of a mile of arcades, restaurants, stores and even an aquarium! And now, close of the far end, over a thousand people gather on the wooden boards around a stage emblazoned with the name of C-King.
“This is a lot of fucking people…” Kilo mutters under his breath as Jerome’s limousine pulls up to the iconic entrance archway.
“Well of course it is! They’re here for the legendary duet of C-King and Trish Una!!” Shizuka cries, giddy beyond reason.
“SHHH!! Keep that quiet, gurl!” Jerome chides, “You still the only civilian that know about that. Most people don’t even know she in the country right now!”
“Why is she going through this much trouble for one show?” Kilo asks.
“I don’t know, mang, she’s European.” Jerome brushes off.
“What does that have to do with it?” he presses, but is then drowned out by the roar of the crowd. The limo drives slowly down the boardwalk, velvet ropes separating the driveway from the walk way of pedestrians. Shizuka looks out through the blackened windows in excitement, while Kilo remains ambivalent. The limo reaches the venue, lights shining and music already playing to pump up the crowd.
Once they reach the concert venue, they drive behind it to avoid rabid fans and the press. “OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD--!!” Shizuka babbles, bouncing in place.
“Shizu, I get it, but when we go in, be coo. I don’t want Trish thinkin’ I brough no crazies backstage wit’ me.” Jerome says, suddenly concerned.
The door opens and the gang are escorted out into the green room. There, Jerome’s star guest waits patiently: Trish Una.
She counts the bullets in her hand, having six, and puts a string between them. With this bullet necklace, she puts it around her neck and faces the entourage that just came into her dressing room.
“And just where the hell have you been?!” she yells before Jerome has a chance to say anything.
“Come on now, don’t be like that,” Jerome stammers, “I told you, I missed rehearsal because I hadda help out some of my buddies. Speaking of, these are-”
He is cut off before he can speak further, as a pink and blonde blur speeds past him and leaps towards the Italian lady with a delighted cry of “TRISH UNA!!”
“Shizu NOOOO!!” Jerome shouts as the security guards and stage crew react. Kilo scowls and opens his palms, but everyone relaxes when Trish raises her hands.
“It’s ok, everyone.”
“It is?” say Jerome and Kilo.
“It is?!!” squeals Shizuka, before getting off the star, “Oh God I’m sorry I didn’t even think about what I was doing I’m not usually like this please don’t hate me I’ve just been a fan of yours for such a long time and--”
“Jerome, is this one of yours?” Trish asks while Shizuka continues to ramble.
“Uh, yeah, she with me.”
“I’m still mad at you for being late, but any friend of yours is welcome. Let’s go get ready, shall we?” When Jerome nods in agreement, she pats Shizuka on the head, saying, “Would you like to come with us backstage?”
“Y-y-yes please,” Shizuka finally replies, after stammering for around a minute.
Outside, flying way above, a drone aims its camera right towards them. On the other side, watching through into a webcam, a light from a laptop illuminates a disturbed face, otherwise shrouded in shadow.

Tales from the Ex-Crypt Vol. 4
Babysitting.. It's one of those things some of us are really good at, and something I am absolutely atrocious at. I am especially bad when that "babysitting" is directed at dating someone who is apparently a 5 year old in a 30 year olds body.
During the last "off" time prior to our permanent "off", my mother thought it would be a great idea to help me move on by paying for a 3 month membership to eHarmony. Let it just be said, I met three different guys on there, and they were all WAY crazier than on any other dating site I have ever used.
The first one was a successful business guy with an MBA and who thought he was hot shit with a BMW. We went on a very basic date, just a walk along one of the boardwalks in Toronto, I was living downtown actually in the city at the time. I did the faux pas of having him pick me up and drop me off at my apartment, but I met him outside and he never knew what floor or apartment I liv ed in. He played it super cool, we got along decently. Then he went out drinking with his buddies for a friends birthday, and blew my phone up while he was out. I was working until Midnight that night, it was pouring rain and I was looking forward to getting home. I had underground parking, so when I got home I entered the building from the underground. He had apparently ditched his buddies, and stood outside my building for over 45 minutes before I believed he was actually there. I felt bad, and went down to let him in. He came up to my apartment, we fooled around, no sex, he left. While he didn't ghost, he did text me the next day saying that he felt very guilty and as a Catholic, couldn't see me again. I have never been *dumped* per se for religious reasons, but there is always a first. That was mine (and only so far).
The next was someone who lived in Vancouver. He was a twin, who had gotten sober and been clean for a year and was just getting into dating. This one was interesting, because we chatted on webcam, voice programs, phone, and gamed together. When he arrived, I became 100% convinced I had been dealing with/talking to/dating his brother essentially. He was hopeless, and SO different.
He flew into Toronto for a five day visit. I picked him up at the airport, and initially he seemed alright. That was until we went to get some food. This man was apparently raised in a barn, he chewed with his mouth wide open, talked while chewing, loudly chewed and didn't know how to belch other than full on (no matter where we were, may I add). The day after he arrived, we drove to Montreal for a Habs vs Leafs hockey game - yeah yeah, how Canadian, I know - and he couldn't drive because his brother had lost his license to a DUI, so then used this dumbass's cuz they're identical twins, and lost HIS license to a DUI too. The amount of dumb is unfathomable. So I drove the whole distance myself. He had never seen bilingual signs, so asked what the French parts meant (which is all fine at this point). We get to the hotel, which was a very nice hotel, and check in. We go to our room, the drive took longer than planned, due to weather and stops so we got ready and walked to the game. There was a blizzard coming the next day so I woke up at 5 am and got ready to leave, he refused to get up and finally got him downstairs to check out and he was like "oh it actually is bad out" because on the 27th floor it didn't look like it was snowing nearly as much as seeing a foot accumulated. It took me 10.5 hours to drive home to Toronto. There were people spinning out and crashing all around us. I had to keep stopping to get the snow build up out of my wheel wells so I could steer (he never left the car other than to go to the bathroom when we'd stop). He also asked me what "ouest" (said ew-st) which is west in French, and then proceed to use a child's voice to say "OUEST!" every time he saw a sign, then poke me in the arm and say "VEE VEE!" which was how he referred to me, instead of 'baby'. After 10.5 hours of this, I wanted to murder the 6'5 fool.
We stopped at the grocery store on the way home, to get the fixings for tacos (who doesn't love taco night, am I right?). The store was 5 minutes from my house, and I was in the checkout when he said he had to go to the bathroom. I was like "we're 5 minutes from home, can't you wait?" but no.. so I got to stand there after purchasing my groceries for 30 minutes while he took a crap at the grocery store. When we got back to my apartment, he wanted to have a bath, so he went into the bathroom while I was making tacos. I can hear him giggling and a ton of splashing, so I go to check out wtf he's giggling at. He was in the tub making TIDAL WAVES with his legs, and had flooded my bathroom, while giggling like a maniac.
Now, it is REALLY hard to be sexually aroused by someone who legit acts like a toddler, so sex was not really something I was even interested in with him at this point. His only saving grace was having a great dick. The sex was not great, however.
The next day, we drove out to where I am from, to meet my best friend and her husband for dinner and a movie. We had some time to kill before our reservations, so we go into Best Buy to poke around. It is finally time to head to the restaurant, and he suddenly has to take a public shit again. I'm walking around like an idiot, waiting for this schmuck and what do I see? Him doodling on the employee white board, like a child. Who knows how long he'd been at it, but here we had people waiting, and he's in art class on a business white board.... We make it to the restaurant, late of course. I had texted my friend to let her know. It's a steakhouse, the Keg, and while we are all having a great dinner, he is chewing like a caveman and belching like he's at home in his underwear. It doesn't get much better when we make it to the movies, we go see I am Legend. Those super quiet points in the movie? Yeah, he waits for those and then does leg lifting farts that echo in the now silent theater, then proceeds to bust out his maniacal giggles.
By day five, when I finally get to drop him off at the airport, I was SO happy that daycare was finally over. I'm all down for a good time but I love MANLY men, and someone acting like a perpetual child definitely doesn't bring out the best in me, or my inner freak >.<
Every once in awhile, Facebook will recommend we might be friends, to which I have flashbacks and ignore the suggestion.
The third person I met was very mild, a personal trainer with severe ADHD who went slightly pyscho when I explained I really wasn't game for dating after experiencing bachelor #2 and needed a bit of a break, but didn't realize how badly he had affected me until I had gone out again. Dude LOST his mind, and I had to block him in every way possible.
Sometimes people go back to toxic ex's because they miss them, but at that point I'm pretty sure I did because he was predictable and safer than dating.

Survey #7 on the Countdown to 2019!
Since my last survey I’ve been sick, busy, lazy... It’s been a long time, but I felt up to doing another right now. I’m not promising any more as a follow up to this tonight, though. I’ve been too into anime lately.
Air Conditioning - At what level or temperature is it on today?
I don't know exactly. It's usually on 68-70, though.
Pet - Where does your pet sleep at night?
Our dog Chloe sleeps on my parents' bed and my cats will be in the house or outside at night.
Laptop - Is it in your lap, on the table, or somewhere else and is it charging?
It's on a table in our living room and it's charging.
Smartphone - Who do you only use your smartphone to talk to without texting or otherwise?
I still don't own or want a smartphone. It’s not something I require because I hate talking on the phone and I'm not interested in texting.
If I go out then I like being unplugged so I can live my life. Being obsessed with some kind of tech is a codependency I really don't need.
Pillows - How many pillows do you actually use while sleeping, not just on your bed?
I'll use two for sleeping every night.
Candles - What's your favorite scent that you own and how often do you light it?
I prefer LED tealights, especially since I have cats. Scented items usually bother me too. I'm allergic to a lot of things.
Cigarettes - Who in your house smokes?
My father used to smoke off our property when he was stressed, but he hasn't done that in years to my knowledge.
My mother and I would never tolerate someone smoking in our house. That shit can kill you, including secondhand smoke.
Couch - How many people could sit comfortably on it?
We only have a love-seat in our living room. My parents and I only have recliners in the den. Mine is extra-spacious.
Glasses - Who wears glasses in your house and are they near or farsighted?
I wear glasses daily because I'm nearsighted and I can't wear contacts. Both of my parents will sometimes use cheap reading glasses, though. They're over 65 now, so their vision isn't as good as it used to be.
Toothpaste - What brand do you like best?
I have to use Sensodyne. My teeth are sensitive to hot, cold and sweet items. My whole body is hypersensitive.
Pencils - Do you prefer using regular or mechanical pencils?
I'd rather just use a pen, but I'll use either of those if they're available.
Coffee Mug - What kind of hot beverage do you drink the most?
I’ll mostly drink coffees that I make at home, although I'll drink ryokucha (green tea) too.
Television - What's your favorite television channel and what're the best shows on it?
My go-to channels are Investigation Discovery and The Weather Channel lately. I'm partial to A Crime To Remember and Evil Lives Here on ID right now, but TWC is something I watch no matter what's on.
The actual weather reports in the morning during AMHQ are really soothing to me and I like So You Think You’d Survive? and SOS: How To Survive.
Chap-stick - Do you get chapped lips a lot, and when was the last time you had them?
I don't often get chapped lips, but it occasionally happens in the winter. It happened sometime during the winter, probably before the new year.
Musical Instrument - What instrument is your favorite and what's your favorite song on it?
If I'm going to listen to only one instrument then I'd choose the ocarina. I like the drums, guitar, piano, harp. It's still better for music to be played with multiple instruments, though.
Trashcan - Whose responsibility is it to take out the trash at your house?
My father often does it, but sometimes I'll do it for him.
Plants - What kind of plants do you have in your house and how often are they watered?
We don't keep any plants.
Hair Dryer - Who in your family has the longest hair and how long is it?
My parents have very short hair, so mine is the longest. It's a bit passed my shoulders right now.
Chocolate - What kind is better, milk, dark or white?
I prefer white, but I'll also eat dark chocolate sometimes. My faves are Hershey's Cookies & Creme Drops if I'm having a real treat, or just the sugar-free Russell Stover Dark Chocolate Medallions.
Shoes - The last time you went out, what shoes did you wear?
My Wolverine hiking shoes. They're the best I've ever owned. I like sturdy footwear that encompasses my feet.
DVD Player - What do you have more of, VHS tapes or DVDs?
I think I tossed out all my personal VHS tapes years ago. I mostly have DVDS, but I’ve got some Blu-Ray discs too
Insects - When you find an unwanted insect inside of your house, do you kill it, take it outside, or leave it alone?
If it's just an insect then I prefer to put it outside if it doesn't have a stinger. If I find a lizard then I'm the same way.
But if I spot a spider, I'm going to try killing it because those can be dangerous. I can't really spot the difference, so it's better to just be safe.
Spiders are specifically arachnids and not insects, though. I'm not lumping them together, but some people call them "bugs" just because the word evokes the image of a pest that bugs them.
Obviously lizards are reptiles, but they're common here. That's why I had to mention them too. They often get into our house through the garage.
Razor - What are all the areas of your body that you shave?
I don't constantly shave, but I'll take the hair off my legs, arms and armpits if I feel like it. I won’t use razors, though.
Webcam - When you go on webcam, who do you chat with the most and do you use any specific sites or programs?
I don't use my webcam.
Refrigerator & Freezer - Does yours have an automatic ice cube maker, and do you prefer cubed or crushed ice?
We don't need one of those and we only use cubed ice. It's just that we rarely use ice at all.
Sunscreen - What SPF do you use?
I haven't used sunscreen in a long time, but if I do go outside for a while then I tend to stay in the shade. I burn so easily and I'm pretty allergic to a lot of things outside too.
It's been a big problem up until recently, but I've finally found a good allergy doctor now. Maybe I can go outside more soon.
Sibling - Do you get along with your siblings, and if you have more than one then which are you closest to?
I'm an only child.
Cereal - What kind of cereal is in your house right now, is it your favorite and if not then what is?
I think there's just some corn flakes. My fave is Cinnamon Toast Crunch even though I rarely eat that or any cereal.
Pain Relievers - What kind of pain reliever do you use when you have a headache?
We have some off-brand Tylenol with pain reliever. It's the only thing that really works, but if it's an allergy headache then I'll take one of those and a sinus pill of some kind as a decongestant.
Monopoly - When you play Monopoly, what game piece do you choose?
I haven't played in so long, but I used to pick the thimble or the dog the most. It’s been ages and I want to play again.
Now I’ve bought the Mario version since I’ve been having game nights with my mother, Miss Cindy and cousin Julie. We haven’t played it yet, though.
It’s got Mario, Peach, Yoshi and Donkey Kong. My preference would be Peach out of those followed closely by Yoshi, although you can buy others.
I would certainly love a Bowser, but my other faves from what’s available right now are the Boo, Tanooki Mario and Luigi figures. I’d say my number one is really the Boo figure, though. It’s my fave Mario baddie!
Bookshelf - What books, if any, have you read more than once?
I tend not to revisit books. I'm also much more fond of nonfiction.
Card Deck - What's your favorite card game?
The only one I really enjoy is Uno and I've got the Mario edition too.
Umbrella - Do you mind walking in the rain without one?
I really don't mind getting wet most of the time.
Mood Ring - What mood are you in right now?
I'm mostly good despite being pretty stiff since I woke up that way.
Hoodie - Do you prefer the kind with or without the zipper?
I'm good with zips and I like them more than pullovers.
Calendar - What's the picture on your calendar for this month?
The one in our kitchen is a Thomas Kinkade calendar. It's just some spring scene for May right now.
Pajamas - What do you usually wear to sleep in and are you comfortable falling asleep in jeans?
I would hate sleeping in jeans. My usual outfits are PJs, nightgowns or just a tee if it's hot out.
Backpack - Are you in school this year and if so, what grade are you in?
I'm turning 32 later this month, thanks.
Alarm Clock - What time do you have to get up tomorrow morning?
I don't have a specific time to be up, especially since it’s Saturday, and it's currently 12:55 AM too. I might go to bed in the morning.
Jewelry Box - What's your most expensive piece of jewelry, and if it was a gift then who got it for you?
It might be a heart charm necklace I got in a shop on the Kemah Boardwalk here in Texas near Galveston. I’m not really sure, though. It was something I wanted for my birthday from my parents.
Game Console - What's your favorite video game to play by yourself?
Animal Crossing! Any of the main ones, but not the offshoots.
I didn’t care to try out Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival. In fact, I never purchased the shitty Wii U system at all. I could’ve played HHD, but it looked lame too. No one I know liked it either.
Mirror - How many times a day do you tend to look in the mirror?
I don't look in mirrors all that often, but I'm not averse to them.
Basement - Is your basement used just for storage, or is it used as another room?
We don't have basements here.
Sports Jersey - What professional teams do you and your family root for?
No one in my immediate family is a big sports fan these days.
Dictionary - What was the last new word you learned and what does it mean?
I kind of rediscovered the word "grimoire" because of the Black Clover anime along with a lot of words based on the character names.
I think the last brand-new one was the name for Licht which means "light" even though there are several I've learned about now.

Manatees, Florida’s Gentle Giants, Deserve Your Protection
“Manateed off,” screamed the front page headline of the Tampa Bay Times. “Feds kicking gentle giants off the endangered species list, angering fans and environmentalists.” This is a town that’s passionate about these lovable, slow-moving “sea cows” with blunt whiskered snouts and paddle-shaped tails, and irate that their status may drop from endangered to merely threatened. Here’s a sobering fact: You can tell Florida manatees apart by their boat propeller scars. Speed zones and no-entry zones have been set up to protect them. Cold water and “red tide intoxication” also hurt them. Here’s a happier fact: Manatees are the state marine mammal and tourists adore them. Yes, you can swim or snorkel among them in Crystal River two hours north of Tampa, but you should always look, not touch. You can’t see manatees in Toronto — our zoo doesn’t have a big enough aquarium — but here you can see them in the wild and in a rehab hospital at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. The zoo’s Manatee and Aquatic Center, home to the non-profit David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Hospital, provides critical care for injured, sick and orphaned wild manatees. It has treated more than 380 manatees since 1991 and reintroduced more than 210 to Florida waters. We watch manatees frolic through underwater viewing windows in two exhibit pools. From a boardwalk viewing platform, we see centre staff work with manatees in three treatment pools. The zoo offers manatee sleepovers and talks in the amphitheatre. All this love doesn’t come cheap — about $1 million (U.S.) a year. It costs $300 a day to treat a manatee patient and $30,000 a year to feed an adult manatee. The herbivores, you see, usually dine on aquatic plants, eating 10 to 15 per cent of their body weight each day. Here that translates to romaine, endive and escarole. I go behind-the-scenes, meet animal keeper Molly Lippincott and the manatees, and feed them some fancy romaine. She’s tending to 15 manatees in different stages of rehabilitation. They’re treated in three medical pools with remote-controlled floors. When they first arrive, blood is drawn and they’re observed and isolated until they’re well enough to join the others. Today, even though the manatees can swim among three pools, they stick together. “They love to be in the smallest place possible, and they love to sit on top of each other,” says Lippincott. “They love comfort.” “People always say ‘What’s their purpose?’ and I always say ‘I think their purpose is just to be a beautiful animal.’” Some manatee patients stay just two months, others up to 2 1/2 years before being reintroduced to warm Florida waters. The goal is to get them in and out as quickly as possible so they don’t develop “a captive mind.” These oddly gorgeous creatures with mermaid tails have no natural predators. People and Mother Nature harm them with boat strikes, cold stress and red tide. I get close enough to marvel at their thick, leathery skin, forelimb flippers and wisps of stiff, short hair. Each manatee gets a name, like Little Red Tiding Hood, Cayo, Camless and Risotta. My favourite is Marmalade, an orphan from the Crystal River. “When Marmalade’s ready to go, at 600 pounds, in about two years,” says Lippincott, “she will go out in the winter to a warm-water site like TECO.” Drive about half an hour south of Tampa to Apollo Beach and you’ll find Tampa Electric’s (TECO) Manatee Viewing Center. It doesn’t advertise. People hear about it through word-of-mouth. Hundreds of manatees swim in the clean, warm-water reservoir of the Big Bend Power Station, usually when the Tampa Bay water temperature drops below 20 C (68 F) and they risk cold stress. “A winter spa for them is what we are,” says Jamie Woodlee, a senior environmental technician with the centre. “They’re pretty docile and will get giddy and roll around.” Alas, the water temperature is a tad warm today so there’s only a handful of manatees. They’re on the power plant side of the canal, not our side. “I wish I could call them over for you,” says Woodlee. “We do have a webcam and the spinner sharks are showing off today.” The power plant has built observation platforms, boardwalks and a self-guided nature trail on the tidal walkway through the mangroves. There’s a small education building, picnic shelter, snack bar and gift shop. Come between November and mid-April. It’s free to marvel at the manatees. “Manatees have no natural enemy, they’re not aggressive, they sleep and eat and hang out — and yet they’ve survived all these years,” Woodlee marvels. “I think it’s really cool that an animal this docile has survived.” Read the full article

Three things in life that I love are the beach and watching the sun rise and set. Actually managing to achieve these becomes more of a challenge at this time of year however I have a secret weapon – well, a virtual secret weapon.
There is one beach that I love but, unfortunately, it’s 3000 miles away from the place I call home. This is the beach that I have based my Silver Lake books around and its been way too long since I sank my toes into its sand.
And my secret virtual weapon – a local webcam.
One morning last week, the blue light of early dawn ( the photo above) caught my eye as I logged onto my laptop. It was 11am in the UK and 6am at the beach( or was it 7am – the clocks changing has me confused about the time difference!) .
For once I had time to spare and therefore the time to watch the sun rise over my beach. Want to see?
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
and finally at 9am the town of Rehoboth Beach was starting to come to life and go about its day.
I might not have physically been there but I could taste the salt in the air, hear the waves lap up on the shore and sense the town of Rehoboth Beach coming to life. It might have been a chilly October sunrise but it warmed my heart.
Sometimes all you need is a little imagination and you’re there……

Hit List: Top Things to do in Door County, Wisconsin
There are few places in the Midwest more delightful than Door County, in the upper peninsula of Wisconsin. With 300 miles of shoreline, you can watch a sunrise and a sunset over the water without leaving the county.
You can also stroll through acres of orchards, explore art galleries, devour cherry pie, sip on local wines and brews, splash in the lake or paddle along the bluffs, stroll through five state parks, visit 19 unique communities and tour 11 historic lighthouses. Here are my Top Picks of Things to Do in Door County!
Take a Boat Ride
You're at the lake — so you gotta get on the lake! Board a cruise along Lake Michigan or Green Bay, and you may even be able to see some of the shipwrecks from the boat (supposedly there are some 400 shipwrecks in these waters!). You can also take the Washington Island Ferry to Washington Island from the mainland, crossing "Death's Door" as you do so. The French bestowed that name on the treacherous waters that sent so many ships to the bottom. Other great ways to get on the water are to go sailing, rent kayaks or try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. Then congratulate yourself on being part of the mere 1% of visitors to Door County who ever get off the mainland! The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay is the perfect place to learn about the history of the area lighthouses, shipbuilding, shipwrecks and more.

Take a Lighthouse Tour
There are 11 lighthouses in Door County, many of which were built in the 1800s, and a semi-annual festival celebrates their history (including tours to some that are rarely open to the public), held in the early summer and fall. The Chambers Island Lighthouse has the most interesting history, in my opinion, while the Cana Island Lighthouse is the most unique. You have to be ferried across the ankle deep water by tractor just to get to the lighthouse! Another worth visiting is the "Bird Cage" - the old Baileys Harbor Lighthouse, with 150-year-old range lights and a new boardwalk that's been built between them.
Enjoy Tastings at Local Wineries and Craft Breweries
There are 8 vineyards and wineries in Door County, and there's even a Wine Trail with maps, festivals and other events. My favorite is Door 44, where husband-and-wife team Steve Johnson and Maria Milano left their legal careers behind to realize their dream of winemaking. If you might be surprised, as I was, to think about wine growing that far north, Steve told me that the climate here between June and October is almost exactly what you find in Bordeaux, France. Harbor Ridge Winery is another enjoyable stop, also run by a husband and wife team.
Winery touring and tasting in Door County, WI Steve Johnson (on the bottom right of the pic above), co-owner of Door 44 with his wife Maria, says that the key to successful winemaking is just to let the grape be the grape. "If you let the grape just do what it wants to do, you'll have a good wine." There are also many local brews and craft master brewers around here, so it's easy to find tours and tastings, as well as great choices for local beers on the menus. And for something different - not wine and not beer - check out Island Orchard Cider. Here they make a variety of ciders from their own 40 acre orchard on Washington Island. My favorite was the pear....mmm, delicious!

Visit Artisan Cheesemakers
What goes with wine better than cheese? And the state is well-known for its dairy farms and cheeses, so you won't want to miss visiting some of the world's best cheesemakers. Wisconsin is home to every single licensed cheese master - 6- of them to be exact. At Wisconsin Cheese Masters, you can find an exclusive selection where many cheeses are not available anywhere else. Owner Jim Pionkoski has a personal favorite: Marieke Golden, made by Marieke Penterman, whom Jim calls the best cheese maker in the U.S. and maybe even the world. Originally from the Netherlands, Marieke mainly produces gouda cheeses. The Golden is her only non-gouda, and Jim eats it every single day. "It's the only cheese I never get tired of," he says.
Jim Pionkoski of Wisconsin Cheese Masters, sharing his love of cheese. Another don't-miss cheese stop is the Door Artisan Cheese Company, run by Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker Mike Brennenstuhl, who has been making cheese all his life. This "one stop shop" includes a beautiful market, extensive underground cheese caves where the magic happens, and an amazing restaurant, Glacier Ledge. You can take tours to learn how the cheeses are made and see the caves. Mike uses only local dairy farmers, and only buys milk for the process from farms that are certified AHA, meaning they are hormone free and humane.

Stuff Yourself at Incredible Restaurants, from Casual Dining to Chef-Driven Foodie Spots
As mentioned above, the Glacier Ledge restaurant is highly recommended; I had one of my best meals of the trip there. They serve an internationally-inspired tapas style menu that's perfect for tasting and sharing.

For an opposite end of the spectrum at a long-time Door County institution, seriously DO NOT miss Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream! This adorable diner and ice cream parlor has been around since 1906, and it's located in what I personally found the most picturesque and explorable town in Door County - Ephraim. A mini jukebox adorns every table, and the burgers are honestly to die for. But be sure to save room for one of their old-fashioned ice cream treats like shakes, floats and sundaes. And if you're a root beer fan like me, you will love their housemade root beer. Best root beer I've ever had in my life!
Wilson's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim, Wisconsin For breakfast or a coffee fix, my pick is Skipstone Coffee Roasters in Sister Bay, my second favorite Door County town. Their breakfast sandwiches are hearty, delicious and healthy; and they make all of their flavor syrups in house. It's pet-friendly, and if you're in a hurry for your next adventure they have a quick self-serve bar with a pay station. And no restaurant round-up of the Wisconsin peninsula would be complete without talking about Al's. Maybe you've heard of it or seen pics on Instagram, but Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant is the place with the goats on the roof. Every morning, the goats are led up a ramp to the sod roof of the restaurant, where they graze all day. You can even adore them from the two webcam streams that are affixed up there. Al's has been an icon for nearly 60 years, and it really is an authentic Swedish restaurant. Now, I have to admit I didn't eat there, but from everything I've heard the food is good. I just went for the goats - oh, and I also picked up a few things in the very nice little boutique there. Check it out!

Experience a Traditional Wisconsin Fish Boil
OK, so technically this could go under the above "Eating out" section. But make no mistake - a fish boil is as Wisconsin as it gets, so much so that the experience definitely deserves its own category! There are numerous places that put on a fish boil, but I recommend Pelletier's. They serve a traditional fish boil every night of the week starting at 5 pm, along with a full menu of other items as well as lunch and breakfast service.
Pelletier's traditional Wisconsin fish boil Owner & Boil Master Matthew Peterson has been doing this for decades, learned from his father before him. The boil consists of freshly caught whitefish from Lake Michigan, cooked outside over the open fire along with corn and potatoes. The tradition comes from the Scandinavian settlers a century ago, and is very much alive and well in Door County. The drama of the "boil over" is pretty cool (advice: don't stand too close to the pot!).
Go Gallery Hopping
Door County is home to an impressive number of galleries and artist studios. It's a great place to discover everything from a small, emerging artists to high-end galleries and accomplished artists who have made a name for themselves. Some of the places I would recommend making a stop would be: Blue Dolphin House, set on four-and-a-half acres of beautiful perennial gardens, in a building that dates back to 1860. Run by Peg & John Lowry, they've been in business for more than 50 years.
Blue Dolphin House shop & studio Deanna Clayton Studios - you'll need to make an appointment or check her website for opening hours. Deanna is an incredibly successful glass artist, using a centuries-old technique called pate de verre. With it, she creates some astonishing sculptures, which have been purchased and commissioned by patrons including many Ritz Carlton hotels around the world.
Artist Deanna Clayton in front of her studio Fine Line Designs Gallery & Sculpture Garden features original paintings, custom wood furnishings, glass, jewelry, ceramics and fiber art more than 90 renowned artists. Stroll the two-acre sculpture garden that showcases sculptures in bronze, stone, metal, ceramic, copper, and stainless steel. Unique, collectible artworks and original gifts are found indoors and out.
Fine Line Designs Gallery If you want more information on the art scene, check out the Door County Visitors guide!
Pick Your Own Cherries
Door County is the cherry capital of the U.S., and you can experience cherry picking yourself at one of the County's pick-your-own cherry orchards. Many families make it a fun tradition every cherry season. Check out the listings of places you can do this, along with many other resources, at Wisconsin Cherry Growers.
