Boa imperators/red tails are so fun because they LOVE to get orange and peach. Half the morphs I see from them are peachy toned, salmon and tan colored. It helps that their original morph is brownish, but they have such vibrant salmon undertones!! My old snake had little pink blushes under her eyes, and salmon all along her side!! They’re such a tropical snake, it’s so fun seeing those colors shine through.
That all being said though, my favorite red tail morphs are darker ones, especially if they have a single stripe down their back as opposed to the spotting.
Think GHI, Mojave, highway morphs with ball pythons. I loooove that kind of thing. Black and white snakes, overall, always take the cake for me

Ticks reptile Lingo cheatsheet
New to the herping world? See a lot of Acronyms being tossed around and have no idea what people are talking about? I get it! It can be a little overwhelming to learn all the Lingo at first, and I admit I use it too and don't think about how that can alienate newcomers. So here's a guide to some of the more commonly used Lingo in the reptile world! These aren't all the words you'll see, but these are likely the ones you're most likely to see commonly used in reptile spaces in general: WC - Wild caught, can be local or Imported CB - Captive Born, can be born from a pregnant WC Female or less commonly, egg harvested. CBB - Captive Bred Born, Animal was born in Captivity from a Captive pairing. CHE - Ceramic heat emitter, good for raising ambient temps, doesn't make a good basking lamp. Hologen - A type of heating bulb, considered the more ideal bulb used for basking. DHP - Deep Heat Projector, you'll see this term thrown around when people are discussing Wavelengths of bulbs usually. UVB - Ultraviolet (b), a type of ray emitted from the sun. A lot of lizards, such as bearded dragons for example, *require* UVB lights. Certain animals need UVB to remain healthy, and a lack of UVB can cause a large variation of irreversible health issues. MBD - Metabolic Bone Disease. Most common in animals like Bearded Dragons and Leopard geckos, also extremely prominent in many other lizard species. Usually caused by a lack of or improper UVB. BCI - Boa Constrictor Imperator. Most common species of Boa on the market, can be commonly found with a variation of different morphs. BCC - Boa Constrictor Constrictor, Absolute beasts of a Boa. It is extremely common to see BCIs called BCCs, these animals are not the same. BCL - Boa Constrictor Longicauda BCO - Argentine Boa. Argentine Boas look nothing like the other BCs on this list, you won't really see these guys being mixed up with the other listed Boas. GTP - Green Tree Python ETB - Emerald Tree Boa F/T - Frozen/Thawed Prey Freshkill - Different from F/T. Freshkill is usually purchased as live prey and killed or incapacitated directly before feeding. AWM - Asian Water Monitor SP - Usually a stand-in acronym for the word "Species". Local - In reference to the locality of an animal. For example, Leachianus Geckos(Often just called Leachies), have a few different Localities that grow to different sizes and can even have different color variations depending on said localities. QT- Quarantine. You'll see this usually in reference to people obtaining new animals, regardless if theyre CB/CBB/WC. But especially will see this word with Imports. A lot of Reptiles- Especially Snakes, can carry hidden diseases that can wipe out entire collections and breeding facilities, it is always advised to QT your animal for at minimum 2 weeks-1 month before introducing them into a collection. Some breeders or importers with Established animals may choose to QT for a longer period of time, this is normal. Established - WC Animal who's been in captivity for an extended period of time, usually upwards of a year. Established animals aren't exhibiting signs of crashing or failure to thrive, may actively be breeding, and are eating well. The majority of Established animals have been seen by a vet, or have been treated for parasites- always ask about treatment regardless if you're asking about an established animal.

Just so you know I’m aggressively waiting for my baby IMG motley boa (Burnt Toast) to finally shed so I can show the ‘increasing melanin gene’ in action because it’s such a cool concept that fits with this blog, and not simply because I need a valid excuse to post him and force you to see him with your eyes because I love him and you should too. He hasn’t even gone blue yet, so it might take a while unfortunately.

#mod talk#boa imperator#snake#reptile#selective breeding#boas grow slower than my baby colubrids :c#I could post other IMG boas but then it wouldn’t be my sweet angel baby#to be fair it’s not even been two months yet#he barely pooped last night I’m used to colubrids going once a week#just as a reminder basically an IMG boa slowly gets darker as they shed#and in combination with motley (the circle pattern) it makes for a nearly solid black snake#with iridescence#he’s already very dark for one his age I’m told#unfortunately I got my banana ball python as an adult so can’t post freckle development since bananas gain freckles as they age#his name is sweet onion chicken teriyaki (onion for short)#poptart has the best morph of all snakes ever (palmetto) so I will definitely post her

Types of boas (part 1)
Boa refers to any animal within the family Boidae, these animals are generally new world and give live birth, unlike pythons. These all are, of course, nonvenomous. Boas range from sand boas to anacondas to amazon tree boas. Female boas are very likely to be bigger (sometimes significantly bigger) than males. I will breakdown posts by genus.
Boa genus:
This genus includes the 2 species (or some consider boa imperator a subspecies of boa constrictor) of boa "constrictors", red tailed boas and common boas, both species are called both, but generally Boa constrictors are red tails and Boa imperators are commons. Boas are nocturnal animals. They are usually solitary, except for mating. Afterwards, they will give birth to up to 60 young, which will be ready to go in minutes. They usually live on the ground, but are excellent swimmers and climbers. In the wild they can live up to 30 years, but in captivity they can live up to 40. When young, they will eat things like rodents, but as adult will eat things like monkeys and deer.

A boa constrictor in a tree
Boa constrictor:
This is your typical beautiful boa "constrictor" with that bright red tail. They do not have true morphs, only localities. Different localities are different sizes and are usually between 5-12 feet in length but the longest I believe was 14 feet. Their weight is generally 20-35 pounds although up to 100 pounds has been seen before.
The localities are:
Surinamese
Guyanese
Venezuelan
-Apure
-Bolivan
Brazilian
Belem
Peruvian
-Iquitos
-Pucallpa
Trinidad
Colombian

Juvenile Peruvian Pucallpa locality Boa constrictor

Adult Suriname locality Boa constrictor
Boa imperator:
These guys are the ones that morph into beautiful variety of colors and patterns. The morphless still have red tails, but it's not quite like the the true red tails. Along with morphs they also have localities too. They are average smaller than constrictors and usually are 4-8 feet in length but can reach up to 12. They are usually around 13 pounds.
The localities are:
Belize
-Crawl Cay
-Caulker Cay
Colombia
-Barranquilla
-Peters type B
Honduras
-Hog Island
-Roatan
Mexico
-Tarahumara Mountains
-Sonoran
-Tamaulipas
-Cancun
Nicaragua
Corn Island
Costa Rican

Ecuadorian
El Salvadorian
Venezuelan
-Paraguayan Peninsula Boa

I labeled them all D, ID, or R for dominant, incomplete dominant, or recessive. Dominant is where it only needs 1 of the gene to show and 1 and 2 genes look the same, incomplete dominant is where 1 gene and 2 genes look different, and recessive is where it needs 2 genes to show. Recessives with 1 gene look like their other morphs and are considered heterozygous. They have to be breed to another boa with 1 or 2 of the same recessive genes to make visual or het babies. Recessive or het adults bred to non visual or het adults can make het babies too.
Health issues with morphs: some morphs can have health issues that always or sometimes come with them. There may be more than this.
Albino: eye deformities
Super motley: doesn't survive to adulthood
Super jungle: can't reproduce
Super aztecs: coordination issues

Juvenile (possibly a newborn) sharp albino boa imperator

Sub adult scoria boa imperator

Newborn eclipse (leopard and Colombian motley) boa imperator
Boa constrictors are commonly kept as pets. They are active, alert, and usually tolerate handling well. They are harder to keep than snakes like ball pythons and most colubrids, but not extremely difficult like some snakes.

Fuck it, I’m assigning snakes for everyone so I can draw more gorgons:
Tim- Eastern Indigo Snake

Reasoning as follows: Very big, very rare- they’re unfortunately endangered :’(- and glossy black + exceptionally pretty. They are neither venomous nor constrictor but instead what is known as a ‘thrasher’ which feels weirdly fitting for Tim.
Butler- ‘Arctic’ Boa Constrictor Imperator

One of the classic examples of ‘big, heavy snake’, but one with a bit of a better reputation than anacondas or retics. They (usually) have a much calmer temperament. Also I just like that there’s a gray morph since Butler doesn’t strike me as particularly colorful.
Jon- Leucistic Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake

It’s a rattlesnake and it’s ivory white, enough said
Angeline- Piebald Albino Royal Python

Really I would say anything nonvenomous would be fitting for Angeline, but alas, this is the only snake I could find with this particular morph (there are retics that are albino pied but their patterning is different- also these guys are a lot friendlier looking)
Foxy- Palmetto Corn Snake

It looks like confetti. I feel that is reason enough.
Arno- Rhinoceros Viper

It is colorful and punk-looking. Look at it. It’s got little nose horns. It’s perfect.
Britva- Kaznakow’s Viper
I’m including him because I got curious and I genuinely didn’t realize Russia had so many vipers. This thing looks like it would hurt me and I’m assuming since I’ve seen it listed multiple times as ‘the deadliest snake in Russia’ despite that also being where the Saw-Scaled Viper is found, that it’s venom packs a mean punch. Also that pattern is just really neat.
#note for later#I’m biased I’ll admit Tim and Jon are two of my favorite species. Eastern Indigos are perfect for Tim though because there’s one at my rehab#- center and he is the definition of ‘looks like he could kill you- actually a cinnamon roll’.
