Dabihawks dates while Hawks was still infiltrating the league must have been so funny.
Hawks renting out a screen at a movie theater in the middle of the godamn night and telling the staff that it’s “for someone special” and to “not tell the press” with a wink just so he can watch the newest horror film with Dabi. It’d be one of those nice ones too with reclining seats too.
Dabi would pretend to not care about the lavish displays of affection. He believes they’re just Hawks’ poor attempts at trying to woo him into letting his guard down.
And yet, he can’t help himself. Despite how bad his childhood was, he was still born in the lap of luxury. He grew to look forward to Hawks’s overpriced takeout, or the aforementioned movie dates. Despite how much he fought against it, Hawks managed to charm him.
But it wasn’t through his flirty, dashing hero persona. It was through the small genuine smiles he’d have when surprised Dabi with a meal and he actually liked it. When he would buy him cds of his favorite artist, and Dabi was surprised he actually listened to him. When he watched Dabi watch a movie. It made the villain’s heart flutter. Sue him, but Dabi was a bitch for attention. It gave him a little bit of hope, made some part of him think that Hawks truly did care for him.

Just a kitten || Dabi x Hawks
Summary: One day, Keigo comes home with a tiny kitten he found on the streets during heavy rain. Determined, he does his best to persuade Dabi to agree to let the kitten stay with them
Warnings: cuteness overload 😻

Rain poured relentlessly outside as Keigo trudged wearily back to the shared apartment he called home. Shivering slightly from the chill that clung to his damp clothes, he slipped through the door, eager to find solace in the comfort of his own space. However, as he stepped inside, he couldn't help but notice the piercing gaze of Touya, his roommate and secret lover, who sat perched on the couch, his turquoise eyes gleaming with curiosity.
Suppressing a nervous smile, Keigo attempted to conceal something concealed under his jacket, the source of his clandestine mission to the bathroom. It was a task he was determined to complete with utmost secrecy, fearing Dabi's inquisitive nature and penchant for uncovering hidden truths. As he made his way past, he hoped against hope that his lover wouldn't detect the concealed object and unravel the surprise he had in store. "It's a little bit rainy today, isn't it?"
"Seriously? A weather talk? That's a new low for you," Dabi muttered, giving Hawks a disapproving look with a raised eyebrow. "As a spy, you can't seem to act natural whatsoever."
"Hey, Dabi," Hawks called out, his voice betraying a hint of urgency, as he maneuvered swiftly towards the bathroom. "How was your day?"
"It was all good until you showed up, acting so strangely," he said, his frown deepening as he scrutinized Keigo from head to toe. "Something feels off."
Meanwhile, Hawks skillfully locked the bathroom door behind him, a mischievous glimmer in his eyes. He couldn't let his guard down for even a moment, as he aimed to conceal his secret mission from prying eyes. With a quick glance around, he breathed a sigh of relief, assuring himself that the coast was clear.
As water droplets cascaded from his dampened clothes onto the bathroom tiles, Hawks knew he had to act swiftly. Unveiling a little, soaked kitten from beneath his jacket, he gazed at the animal with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. "It's fine, little one. Let's dry you up."
Touya wasn't as clueless as Keigo, though he could have his moments. He let out an irritated sigh and stood up from the couch, trailing behind Keigo as he headed to the bathroom. There, he listened for a moment, furrowing his brows. "Oi! Are you communicating with your clothes now?!" Touya attempted to open the door but found it locked. "What's gotten into you today?" he growled, banging on the door.
Startled by Dabi's unexpected attempt to breach his privacy, Keigo froze, his heart pounding in his chest. He frantically tried to compose himself, realizing that his attempts at secrecy had been abruptly shattered. Taking a deep breath to regain his composure, he spoke with a mixture of exasperation and pleading. "Wait! Just a minute, Dabi!" Keigo's voice wavered slightly, the urgency evident in his tone. "I... I need a moment, can you please grant me that? Just go to the living room." Frustration laced his words, a tinge of irritation creeping into his voice. The lack of privacy within the confines of their shared abode was beginning to grate on his nerves.
"Oh, that wasn't suspicious at all," Touya muttered with another annoyed sigh. Turning around, he took a few steps away. Touya decided to wait nearby, curious to see what was going on.
With the kitten now comfortably dried and wrapped in a soft towel, Hawks took a moment to collect himself, stealing a quick glance at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. Assured that he appeared composed, he cautiously opened the door and stepped out, only to be startled by Dabi's unexpected presence nearby. Hawks nearly jumped, his surprise evident in his widened eyes and a faint blush tinting his cheeks. He cleared his throat, attempting to regain his composure despite the sudden encounter. "I asked you to wait in the living room, didn't I?" Hawks' voice carried a mix of mild exasperation and lighthearted reproach, his gaze meeting Dabi's with a hint of playful annoyance.
"And when did I start listening to you?" Dabi asked, tilting his head with a frown and arms crossed over his chest. "So? What got your feathers all so ruffled?"
Letting out a soft sigh, Keigo's exasperation melted away as he shifted his focus to the adorable bundle in his hands. Gingerly, he unwrapped a portion of the towel, revealing a tiny, trembling kitten nestled within. Its wide eyes and delicate form tugged at his heartstrings, reminding him of the vulnerability and innocence contained within such a small creature. "They did," Keigo whispered, his voice filled with a mixture of tenderness and awe.
"A cat? Seriously?," Dabi asked with a scoff. "That's the reason you act like a weirdo? Is it some kind of birds of prey thing? Does your bird brain compel you to bring stuff home?"
A frown creased Hawks' features in response to Dabi's words, his voice carrying a touch of hurt. "You can be so cruel sometimes, you know that?" Keigo's tone held a hint of frustration and weariness, his patience worn thin by the constant jabs and nicknames. He was tired of the playful mockery. "Stop calling me names, Mr. Patchwork," he muttered, his voice laced with a mix of annoyance and a plea for understanding. Turning away, Keigo made his way to the living room, his wings flicking slightly to shed the lingering water droplets.
"Mr. Patchwork, how original," Dabi rolled his eyes, following him. "You wiped that thing, but you are still dripping wet. You seriously have a bird brain."
After these words Dabi went to find a towel, then he came back and started to pat Keigo's wings dry.
"Thank you," Keigo replied with a tiny smile, his attention focused completely on the tiny cat. "We are keeping them, Dabs."
"No fucking way," Dabi said, simply putting the towel on Keigo's head to dry his hair. "One big annoying bird is enough. We don't need any four legged pet in here."
"Daaabs!" Keigo's heart ached as he longed for Dabi's agreement to keep the precious feline. With a hint of desperation in his voice, he began to lay out his heartfelt arguments. "Dabi, please," Keigo implored, his tone tinged with vulnerability. "This kitten needs us. It needs a loving home, and we can provide that. We have the means to take care of it, and I've seen how gentle and caring you can be. Just imagine the joy it will bring to our lives. We can create a space filled with warmth and compassion, not just for each other, but for this little life that has found its way into our path."
Dabi groaned, getting more and more pissed with Keigo's behavior. "Did you fly into a window recently or something? How do you imagine this?” He asked, ruffling Keigo's hair a bit too hard. "Sometimes we are out for days, you think they will be able to be alone for so long?"
"Dabi, I understand your worries, but we don't have to do this alone. We have friends who would be more than willing to lend a helping hand," Keigo proposed, his voice gentle yet resolute. "We can ask them to babysit the cat when needed, ensuring that we have the flexibility to balance our responsibilities and still provide a loving home for this little one."
Dabi laughed in a nasty way. "Oh! Yeah, I can see you walking up to my old man and being like, 'Endeavor-san... Please, take care of my kitten today' or you'll pass them to that weird rabbit chick. How pathetic," he took away the towel, making sure Keigo was completely dry. "Twice and Toga would probably be eager to take care of the kitten but I wouldn't trust them with such a small creature."
"Endeavour as a babysitter for a little kitten? Now that's an interesting image," Hawks quipped, a playful glint in his mismatched eyes. "Well, your vampire-like friend might surprise us," Keigo replied, a touch of lightheartedness in his voice.
"Not gonna happen," Dabi shook his head. "Why do you even want to keep them?"
Keigo settled himself on the couch, gently placing the little kitten by his side. He turned his gaze towards Dabi, his expression earnest and full of hope. "Dabi, please," Keigo implored, his voice laced with sincerity. "Look at this little one. Look at how it trusts us, how it seeks our care and affection. I can see the love in your eyes when you look at it, too. We can be its family, its guardians, its source of warmth and comfort."
"Honestly, once I had the same look. I looked at my parents expecting a lot and where it led me," Touya shrugged again, crossing arms over his chest. "It's just a cat, Keigo. It doesn't care about us. All it wants is food and warmth to not die. I bet it'll scratch me as soon as I get closer," Touya summed up, and to prove his point, he walked closer to the kitten and offered it his hand.
As the little kitten continued to tremble, its innate curiosity overcame its fear. It tentatively reached out, sniffing at Touya's hand with a delicate twitch of its tiny nose. Sensing the warmth emanating from him, the kitten found solace in his touch. With hesitant steps, it mustered the courage to climb onto Touya's palm, its small body curling up, seeking comfort and security.
This was so sweet and unexpected! Dabi huffed with a deep frown, trying his best to not show how he really felt about that.
Carefully, he picked the kitten up and put his other hand over them to warm them up more effectively.
His eyes moved to Keigo who was looking at him with a stupid grin and sparkles in his eyes. "What? They are still not staying here. You can nurse them to good health and find them a home. Who wouldn't adopt a kitten from Japan's number two hero?" Dabi mocked him a little. "I really have enough of one chicken making a mess here, I don't need a kitten in this mess as well."
As the little kitten nestled into Dabi's palm, its trembling form gradually subsided, finding comfort in the warmth and security offered by his touch. It let out a feeble attempt at a meow, the sound resembling more of a tiny squeak, as it expressed its contentment.
Keigo's gaze turned earnest as he locked eyes with Dabi, a silent plea reflecting in his expression. "Dabi, look at them," Keigo implored, his voice filled with a mix of conviction and tenderness. "They have already found a place in their heart for you. Can you deny them the love and care they deserve? They've chosen us, and it's our responsibility to provide them with a safe and loving home."
"I had a pretty good example that I indeed can deny them the love and care they deserve," he chuckled dryly, petting the kitten on the head with his thumb. "Did they really pick you or you just found it and snatched it from the streets?"
Hawks' lips curled into a gentle smile, his heart warmed by the sight of the tiny bundle of fluff in Dabi's palm. "I saw this little one almost drowning in a puddle," he recounted softly, his voice tinged with a mix of compassion and determination. "They were so small, and with the heavy rain today, I couldn't bear to leave them to fend for themselves. As a pro hero, it's my duty to save lives, whether they be humans or animals," Keigo continued, his eyes shining with sincerity. "This little kitten needed someone to lend a helping hand, and I couldn't ignore their plea for help. They needed a chance at life, and I couldn't turn away."
"God, you make me sick with all the hero talk. 'I saved it from drowning' wasn't enough? I didn't need this whole speech they teached you in school or something," Touya said with a disgusted grimace, still stroking the kitten's head. "They can stay until they're better. After that, you'll find them home."
____________
As the days passed, Keigo couldn't help but smile in quiet contentment, observing Dabi's interactions with the little feline. He cherished the moments they spent together, watching as their bond grew stronger with each passing day.
However, as time went on, Keigo's busy schedule began to catch up with him once again. Overworking himself had become an all-too-familiar routine, and one morning, he woke up to find that he had overslept. Panic set in when he realized that it was already half past 8am, and he hurriedly got out of bed, determined to get ready for the day.
His heart skipped a beat as he scanned the room, his eyes searching for the little kitten. But to his immense surprise, the little feline was nowhere to be found. His heart sank, worry gnawing at his thoughts as he wondered where the kitten could have gone. Had he gotten out of the room somehow? Did he need help?
Dabi slept peacefully until he heard Keigo running around like a headless chicken. He was laying on his belly with arms crossed under his head, but soon Keigo's thrashing around pissed him off. "Did you fucking lost your head or something?! Get to bed or go to your fucking job and let me sleep!” He groaned not even raising his head.
"Kitty! He's gone! Move your ass and help me look for him!"
Dabi just raised his head and there was the kitten, sleeping quietly on his pillow in his arms. "Happy now? Can you be quiet now?"
Relief washed over Keigo as he discovered the little kitten snuggled comfortably with Dabi. His initial shock quickly gave way to a mixture of exasperation and affection. He scolded Dabi, "My God, don't do that again!" Keigo chided, but a soft smile softened his reprimand. He couldn't help but feel grateful that the kitten was safe and sound, finding comfort in Dabi's presence.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Keigo observed the endearing scene before him. The kitten yawned, its tiny eyes blinking open. In response, the little feline snuggled even closer to Dabi, seeking warmth and affection.
Keigo's heart swelled with tenderness as he watched the bond between Dabi and the kitten. It was clear that they had grown fond of each other, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this newfound addition to their home. As he reached out to gently stroke the kitten's soft fur, he couldn't help but marvel at how this little creature had brought even more warmth and love into their lives. "Today I'll speak with one girl who is interested in taking him home."
"Cool. You gotta tell her the offer isn't up to anymore," Dabi shrugged and nuzzled his nose against the kitten's head. "Sucks to be her, but he isn't going anywhere."
Keigo's frown deepened as he rose from the bed, his voice tinged with a mix of frustration and disappointment. "Wait a second. You were the one who didn't want to deal with the cat," he pointed out, his annoyance evident in his tone. "I've already made all the arrangements, man, and the girl from the other city is coming to pick him up."
"I don't care, I am not giving him away. I can even scare her off if needed," Touya summed up. "He's staying with us."
Keigo's voice carried a mix of confusion and frustration as he confronted Dabi about his change of heart. "Why did you change your mind, huh?" he asked, his tone tinged with exasperation. "You were so adamant that we didn't need a cat, that he couldn't stay with us. And now, you don't want to give him away?"
"No," Dabi said, simply hugging the kitten. "I'll burn anyone who will try to take my boy away, even you, chicken brain," Dabi warned and like nothing would ever happen he got comfortable and attempted to get some more sleep.
"So he's your boy already, huh? Oh, Touya, you're such a softie."
"I am a softie and you are late. Get the fuck out."
As Keigo smiled to himself, he couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and contentment in his heart. Before leaving the room, he leaned down and planted a soft kiss on Dabi's cheek, the gesture filled with affection and appreciation. "My little softie," he teased gently, a playful glint in his eyes.
With a parting glance at the adorable scene before him, Keigo left the apartment, giving Dabi some space to think about their decision.
The kitten, seemingly awakened by the gentle exchange, let out another adorable yawn before stretching its tiny body. It looked up at Dabi with its innocent eyes, seemingly unfazed by the potential changes in its living situation. Playfully, it tapped Dabi's nose with its little paw, as if to say, "Hey, I'm here, and I love you too!"
Dabi hummed and opened one eye. "Oh? Are you hungry, little one? Are you?" He asked, nuzzling his nose against the kitten's head and kissing it.
With newfound energy, the kitten hopped off the bed, its tiny form brimming with friskiness and curiosity. It trotted towards the kitchen through the open door, meowing occasionally.
A little reluctantly, Dabi got up from bed and followed the little kitten to the kitchen. There, he grabbed him and lifted him onto the counter to feed him. "We need to give you a name. You can't be a kitten all the time."
The kitty meowed loudly, instantly rubbing his chin over Dabi's palm, purring.
He put some of the cat food into a bowl. "Eat up, little buddy.'
Kitty sat by the bowl and quickly finished his meal, purring.
Dabi looked at kitten and booped his little nose. "How about Nori? Do you like it?"
The kitty purred loudly, trying his best to climb Dabi's shoulder.
"I'll take it as a yes," Touya simply picked the kitten up and helped him on his shoulder. "Comfortable?"
As the tiny kitten settled comfortably on Dabi's shoulder, he seemed to find a sense of security and peace. He curled up into a ball, content in his new perch, and within moments, his little body relaxed into slumber. The rhythmic rise and fall of his breath against Dabi's neck created a soothing melody, and the soft purring sound further affirmed his trust and affection for his human companion.
Dabi smiled, at least now he could go back to sleep, so that's exactly what he did.
He returned to the bedroom and carefully laid back down, taking Keigo’s pillow to rest his head on.

Dabi: Who's side are you on, birdie?
Hawks (bi-disaster, would use his dying breath on a bad pun): I guess you could say... I play for both teams. *finger guns*

Hawks trying to court someone with a cat quirk who is trying to hunt him—
Okay the one with a cat quirk just has to be Dabi.
Dabi sees Hawks wings and his eyes just instinctively go big and he pounces on the hero almost always catching him off guard.
Dabi is truly a sneaky cat that gets his mark.
It makes Dabi arch his back and flick his tail proudly while Hawks is pinned beneath him looking grouchy and warbling angry chitters at him.
An odd pair a cat and a bird are, especially since Hawks is a raptor hawk, but they are inexplicably attracted to each other and they can’t resist the pull they feel towards one another.
Hawks just wishes Dabi didn’t pounce on him or stalk him every chance he got.
Dabi hunts Hawks alright.
He just hunts him so he can show he’s a great cat and a very worthy mate.
And if Hawks enjoys their little game and shows Dabi what a great raptor hawk is he and stops holding back..well Dabi is completely satisfied as he purrs curled up on Hawks in their nest.

DabiHawks headcanons
@cozzzynook asked me on twt about my favourite hcs for them, and I thought I'd share them here too. Thanks again for the question ❤️ If some of you don't know about her deaf!Touya hc, go read this for starters. It's one of the best I've ever read!
SFW
Hawks loves Dabi’s piercings. He’s so entranced by them, captivated by the way light shines on them and reflects on Dabi’s skin.
And speaking about being in love with Dabi’s features, he’s totally enamoured by Dabi’s different skin tones, bird view etc. In his eyes Dabi’s the most gorgeous person he’s ever met and is unable to understand Dabi’s jokes about his appearance.
Hawks sees the sky in Dabi’s eyes, Dabi sees the sunset at golden hour in Hawks’. They could stare in each other’s eyes for hours.
Dabi realizing Hawks is definitely very different from his public persona. He loves that Hawks is so calm but has such a sharp mind; most of all, he’s surprised he actually cares about people. He’s the only true hero he’s ever known.
Dabi not taking any bullshit facade from Hawks and pushing him again and again until Hawks finally understands and breaks from his shakles and riots against the Commission. (Best flavour).
Dabi always brings one of Hawks’ feathers with him. Pre-PLF he used to keep it in his coat’s pockets, but when they lived at the villa he has around his neck as a necklace, like a declaration.
Same for Hawks, who switches his trademark ruby studs with turquoise ones, even outside the villa, when he’s on patrol.
Hawks isn’t ashamed of his bird traits, he’s just not used to indulging in them. Dabi’s shocked when he finds out and absolutely loves them to the moon and back, both when Hawks softly trills and chirps during cuddles, and when they’re in bed.
Hawks getting super protective over Dabi when he's in feral mode or during a fight, shielding him with his wings and snarling at their opponents, while Dabi thinks it's fucking hot.
Hawks helping Dabi touching up his roots without ever asking anything and taking care of his staples and scars; Dabi helps Hawks preen his wings (finds it relaxing too!). Also, he gives a killer back massage with his warm hands.
I just love that their story unfolds in winter, bc Hawks hates the cold and is drawn to Dabi’s warmth. He could doze off just laying with his head in Dabi’s lap, surrounded by his warmth. The best’s at night, when they sleep together and Hawks drapes his wing over Dabi’s body.
Hawks has freckles, your honor. Dabi counts them absentmindedly every time they’re close to each other and Hawks isn’t watching (already asleep, staring at the city on a rooftop etc)
Once they're comfortable enough with each other, they become super cuddly. Also, Hawks’s wings unconsciously and lightly brush against Dabi or almost-wrap around him when they’re close together, even when they’re in public.
Nicknames! Birdie/pretty bird/angel/dove/hot stuff. They barely use each other's names when they’re talking to each other. Hawks can understand Dabi’s mood by which one he uses and how he pronounces it.
Postwar, Hawks visits Touya when he’s recovering at the hospital. Doesn’t dare to hold his hand though. He doesn’t even talk to him, but is unable to stay away from him while his heart clenches. He still feels guilty.
Hawks fully supports Touya’s recovery and therapy but still doesn’t dare to actually address anything until Touya just has enough, pulls him close and kisses him.
NSFW
UNHINGED HAWKS AND DABI HAS THE BONER OF A LIFETIME WHEN HE SEES THE BIRD GO TOTALLY FERAL
Dabi has a feather/wing kink obvs.
They’re each other sex awakening. Literally neither of them had ever thought about sex before meeting each other. After their first hook-up they’re wrecked and can’t get enough. Yes, it evolves from just sex to porn with feelings™
Dabi loves giving head more than receiving it. He knows he’s good but the way Hawks writhes and moans and pulls him close by his hair has his mind swimming and blank. He could come just by blowing Hawks.
Hawks cherishes every part of Dabi. Covers him in kisses and, similar to Dabi’s in the previous hc, loves eating him out.
@electrozookie infected me with “Dabi has a split tongue” brainrot (alternatively his tongue’s pierced) and Hawks fucking loves it.
When Hawks bottoms, their favourite position is the cowgirl: Dabi loves watching Hawks bouncing on him but especially looks at his spread wings, how they quiver in sync with each movement + this way they can both look at each other’s face.
Involuntary (and not) Dabi leaves burn prints on Hawks’ hips and tights and smoke rises from the seams of his scars when he’s near the climax. Hawks finds it insanely hot.

Book nerd Dabi means so much to me. The moment the league gets access to PLF resources that nerd is bee-lining it to the longest sci-fi and mystery books on the shelf. Long, political stories with fucked up characters and fascinating worlds.
Hawks would ask what he’s reading and he’d give a vague response, not expecting the hero to be interested. After all, the league generally gets bored with his explanations after about 5 minutes. But Hawks doesn’t. He listens intently, asking more detailed plot and character questions. And Dabi loves it. It’s been so long since someone has listened to him, since someone cared about what he thought. Without thinking, he delves into the conversation with the hero, explaining and analyzing every detail.
He ends up rambling for damn near two hours. Hawks doesn’t point it out to him, doesn’t want the villain to be embarrassed about it. Especially since he looks so damn cute. His healthy skin is flushed as he passionately talks about the novel’s world building, his movements animated. He has a big smile on his face and Hawks has never seen him so open, so excited about something in his life.
Normally when Dabi smiles it’s wild and feral, or wolf-like and predatory. This is neither. It’s a genuine joy that tugs at the hero’s heart strings and makes him want to spend even more time with the villain.

Feather In The Wind (Valentine's Day Special 2024)
The first Valentine’s Day that Dabi spends with the Paranormal Liberation Front is a peaceful one- at least compared to what he’s used to. After a childhood full of pain and trauma- ruined holidays and cold nights spent outside pushing himself to the edge with his individual training while his father ignored him in favor of abusing Shouto- being in his own large, lavish room within the confines of the base is… Interesting, to say the least.
There’s no booming yells reverberating through the walls, no ashes or burn marks on the floor, no slaps echoing through the hallway. His old family is dead and gone to him, instead replaced by Toga who barged into his room with Twice just over an hour ago to share a sushi dinner with him on his bed.
He isn’t sure he considers the members of what was once the League of Villains a family or even a group of friends, but they’re people who share his ideologies, and they love him more than anyone else ever has. So, when they come knocking at his door with dinner to make sure he’s fed, he doesn’t deny them, nor does he rush them out. He figures there’s no better way to spend the day of love than with the few people who truly love him. That’s why it’s nearly past two in the morning by the time they finally fuck off and leave Dabi with the takeout container trash and a soy sauce stain on his wrinkled bedsheets.
It’s a quiet night, so Dabi finds himself going out to the balcony with a cigarette in hand. He lights it with his quirk and lets out a sigh as the cold air consumes him. Snowflakes fall over him in quick succession, melting on his hot skin and clothing, leaving him damp but still warm due to the insulating nature of his quirk. He takes a few long drags from his cigarette and watches the smoke he blows out puff up in the frosty air.
The base that they all stay in is a large tower that oversees the rest of Deika City. It’s a quiet and peaceful town with most of the members being part of the liberation front. They go to bed early most nights so they can wake up even earlier come morning to train for the cause… Dabi almost wonders if the gullible grunts Re-Destro and Shigaraki have gathered and molded are just as bad as the society of heroes they’re fighting against. They blindly follow their grand commander, not questioning his authority or morals, blindly agreeing with everything he says even when it’s not in their best interest. Dabi supposes he’s not much better, though. He’s never agreed with Shigaraki’s morals a hundred percent, but he’s never dared call the man out- especially now with his newfound power, he and this organization could end Dabi in a heartbeat.
It doesn’t matter, anyway, Dabi supposes. While Shigaraki is going mad with power and while his objective becomes more and more questionable by the day, they both want the same thing in the end; to destroy heroes and the terrible society they’ve made since their manifestation.
He isn’t sure why he bothers. His life has been a living hell for a long time and soon enough, he’s going to go up in flames like the rest- probably by his own doing… Hopefully by his own doing. Dabi laughs to himself, mulling over it all. Then, something small comes into view. At first, he thinks it may be a piece of trash or even some sort of animal, but it gets closer until he makes out the familiar shape.
Dabi blinks and burns his cigarette out, abandoning it on the floor of the balcony so he can narrow his turquoise eyes at the red feather that’s just landed on the railing. Is it a coincidence? No, it must be from Hawks. It’s too large to be from a bird. But what does it mean? Is it a signal? A warning? Some sort of fucked up joke? He’s well aware that the pro hero frequently uses his feathers for spy work and wonders if he should light the damn thing on fire, but then he sees something else in the distance- no, someone, and he quickly puts together who it is.
Hawks is flying towards him in a downward trajectory. At least three fourths of his feathers are gone and some of the ones remaining on his left wing are singed at the ends. His jacket isn’t over his shoulders despite the freezing temperatures, instead balled up in his hands and pushed up against his abdomen. The blond’s whole outfit is tattered and there’s blood on his hands and face as he weakly flutters towards the tower.
After what feels like forever, Hawks gets close enough that he’s hovering about ten meters above the balcony. A harsh gust of wind seems to knock the last of Hawks’s energy out of him and send his body falling down to where Dabi’s standing.
Part of Dabi wants to tell the poor bastard to get fucked and go inside so he can enjoy the rest of his  night, but before he can think better of what is arguably a poor decision for him to make, he finds himself reaching out and catching the pro hero in his arms. Hawks crashes into him with a pained groan, wrapping an arm around Dabi’s neck. His wings have given out and he’s too weak to do anything else, so Dabi wraps both arms around him in return to support his weight.
“...Hawks,” Dabi breathes out, too shocked by Hawks’s entrance to say much else. He drags the man inside through the screen door of his suite before the two of them can be caught outside like this by Shigaraki or any of the other lieutenants, locking the door behind them and quickly glancing out the glass of the door to make sure they haven’t been seen. A quick sigh of relief falls from between his lips when he realizes that no one was outside or nearby, but that relief is replaced by confusion the second he notices Hawks is too weak to walk as well. “What-?”
“I… I didn’t know,” Hawks starts, voice raspy. There’s clearly something wrong aside from the basic injuries and exhaustion that are already apparent. Dabi thinks he may have to press for that information as he sets Hawks down to sit on the edge of his bed, only for Hawks to pull his crumpled up jacket off of where he’s been holding it against his stomach to reveal a massive burn wound. It’s ghastly and large, just on the left side of his abdomen, bleeding and fresh. It looks like there’s shards of varying sizes in it, perhaps shrapnel from an explosive or some sort of weapon-based quirk. “I mean, where else could I have gone? You’re not my first choice, but you were nearby and I’m sure this is your area of expertise.”
“You could’ve gone literally anywhere but here… And you chose to come here to Deika city,” Dabi sighs. On top of soy sauce stains, he’s also going to have blood stains on his sheets. That’s going to be a fun lie to come up with if anyone sees his room before he has the chance to wash them… Huffing, the white-haired man goes into his connected bathroom and grabs the first aid supplies. Thankfully, he’s so used to burning himself from overdoing it with his quirk that he has to treat second and third degree burns regularly. When he returns, he sets the supplies on the edge of the bed and glares down at Hawks. “First aid isn’t exactly my forte, dumbass. Best case scenario, you’re going to lose a ton of blood. Worst case scenario, you’re going to die of an infection in a few days.”
“Calm down,” Hawks says with a dismissive wave. “I trust you. You know that.”
“That’s bullshit,” Dabi points out, because truth be told, their relationship is complicated. Hawks may or may not have killed Best Jeanist and brought him to be turned into a Nomu- that much is true, but if Dabi is anything, it’s a good judge of character. He’s well aware that while the other man isn’t completely brainwashed like a lot of the other pro-heroes, he’s at least misguided and intent on staying complicit in allowing them to continue upholding their vile hero-centered society. On the other side of things, Dabi knows that Hawks understands him as well, and that they can’t truly be friends let alone anything more than that… At least they shouldn’t be. Yet, they both frequently toe the line of what is and isn’t appropriate for a relationship that’s supposedly based around their work. “And even if it weren’t… Neither of us should trust each other.”
“Just try your best,” Hawks shrugs.
“Fine. Take off any of the clothes covering your injuries and lie down,” Hawks does as instructed, removing his clothes painstakingly slow for someone who’s supposed to be having a dire medical crisis. First, his shattered visor and headphones, then his boots, followed by his socks, then his tattered shirt and pants. The only things left on are jewelry and his boxers as he lies down on the end of Dabi’s bed. Dabi sits beside Hawks’s left hip on the mattress, his first aid kit in hand. His eyes flicker between the bloody jacket on the floor and Hawks’s injury. “Be prepared for this shit to hurt like hell.”
“Whatever happens happens.”
With that, Dabi gets to work.
“Oh, yeah, because that’s exactly what I need right now- a dead hero on my hands.”
“Think of it this way; I’m sure Shigaraki has explicitly ordered you not to kill me despite your suspicions about my loyalty to the cause, so now you have extra motivation to keep me alive.”
“Tch, fine,” Dabi rolls his eyes for what feels like the millionth time that night as he puts a pair of gloves from his first aid kit on. He rinses Hawks’s wound with saline and dampens some gauze with the same solution. “Only for you would I keep a pro-hero in my god damn bedroom…”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hawks shakily replies with a wince.
“Nothing, just know that you’ve only got tonight. You try to mooch off of me any longer than that and I’m kicking your sorry ass out of here.”
“Fine, fine.”
An awkward silence falls upon them. Dabi continues to work, slowly but surely, packing the wound to the best of his ability. Part of him wonders if he should’ve recruited Toga- she wouldn’t rat him out for keeping Hawks here, and she would certainly be much better at tending to the hero’s injury, but part of Dabi wants to be the only one to do this for Hawks. Dabi’s mind races; why would Hawks come here, will he be okay, what does this sort of intimate interaction mean for them, what if Shigaraki finds out about this, and most importantly-
“Who did this to you?”
“Huh?” Hawks blinks, seemingly baffled by the question. “Why do you care?”
“Just tell me who did this to you,” Dabi demands. “I want to know.”
“Tch, what are you gonna do? Kill ‘em?”
Dabi feels his cheeks burn red. In order to keep himself from meeting Hawks’s eyes, he focuses on the wound a little more than he needs to, paying extra attention and being especially gentle with how he covers the packing job. Just to be safe, he tapes an extra layer of gauze over it and pulls out some tape bandages.
“Maybe,” Dabi answers, perhaps a little slower than he should for it to be believable. “Now sit up so I can finish up.”
“Since when do you care so much?”
“Does it really matter? I assume you were trying to capture whoever it was anyways.”
“Yeah, I was trying to apprehend her to turn into the police, not kill her,” Hawks says. He tenses as he forces himself to sit up straight despite the evident pain that’s telling him not to. “Don’t tell me… You’re upset that I’m hurt?”
“So what if I am? You rocked up to my place at two in the morning on Valentine’s Day expecting me to play nurse- I think I have the right to be just a little pissed,” Dabi retorts, wrapping the tape bandages around Hawks’s mid-section to fully cover the wound on his side.
“I’m surprised you’re keeping me here… And that you helped me in the first place,” Hawks sighs and lays back on the bed as soon as Dabi finishes. Against his better judgment, Dabi joins him. The two men lie on their backs, staring up at the ceiling, side by side, far closer than two friends- two enemies- two comrades, should be. Hawks turns his head so he can look at Dabi, and while Dabi doesn’t return the heated stare, he can most certainly feel it burning holes into him. “Why?”
“Because it’s you,” He whispers before he can think better of it. Dabi, usually so calm and so collected, feels himself falling apart. He reaches out to hold Hawks’s hand. Everything that follows is nothing but uncharacteristically impassioned word vomit. “And I don’t know what it is about you that I like so much, but I couldn’t just let you fall and snap your neck or crack your pretty little head open on my balcony.”
“Heh, you like me?” Hawks teases, intertwining their fingers and giving Dabi’s palm an affectionate squeeze.
“It’s not like that,” Dabi raises his voice and snatches his hand away. Briefly, he wonders if this was a mistake. “Are you laughing at me?”
“Yeah? So what if I am? What are you gonna do about it? I’m already injured as it is- you’d have to tear a limb off or kill me for things to be any worse than they are now.”
“You’re annoying.”
“Thanks for this…” Hawks responds. Dabi looks over to see the man smiling at him. “I owe you one.”
“No shit. Seriously, why’d you come here in the first place? Even if you were nearby, let’s not pretend that your injury was life-threatening enough to make you desperate.”
“Would you believe me if I told you that I don’t have anyone else?”
“Really? No family? None of your pro hero friends? No fan girls to spend the day of love with?”
“No,” Hawks answers. He rolls onto his uninjured side- into Dabi- and places a hand on his chest. Dabi freezes at the touch. “I’m not very close with my family and my ‘pro hero friends’ aren’t my friends, they’re my coworkers. The fan girls are… A little much, too. It’s not smart to get attached to any of them.”
“And yet you’re attached to me? Or, attached to me enough that you felt safe coming here, even knowing who I am and what I’m capable of.”
“I didn’t say that I was attached to you at all, Dabi. Don’t put words in my mouth.”
“But it’s obvious,” Dabi points out. “Just like I’m attached to you… You wouldn’t have come here and trusted me to help you like this if you didn’t feel something for me.”
“And you would’ve let me crash on your balcony and die in the freezing cold or ratted me out to Shigaraki and the others if you didn’t feel the same way.”
“So, what? Does that make us friends now? I know you’ve been trying to get buddy-buddy with me for a while. I bet you’re real happy now.”
“Friends? Let’s not pretend it’s that easy,” Hawks says with a sardonic laugh. “We both know it’s not.”
“Does it matter?”
“I guess not. We both know how this ends, anyway.”
“Then don’t argue semantics with me, you prick.”
And for a moment, the two men share a glance; a moment of peace wherein there’s no hero and no villain, no war, no anything or anyone but the two of them. Gold burns into icy blue. Dabi assumed he’d lost his heart long ago, but he’s sure it skips a beat when he feels Hawks’s calloused hand over it through his clothes.
“Dabi?” Hawks starts, love and adoration radiating off of him in potent waves that make Dabi nauseous.
Dabi reaches over to place a hand on top of Hawks’s.
“Yeah?”
“What are we after this?”
“...I think we both know the answer to that,” Dabi says, because he knows deep down that this won’t work. It never could. They don’t have a chance. Putting a label on this would just upset them even more when it inevitably has to end. “Let’s not make this more complicated than this needs to be… I mean, let’s just enjoy each other while we can.”
“Right. I guess we shouldn’t let this change anything… Well, aside from the obvious, that is. Just wanted to make sure we were on the same page! I’d hate for you to catch feelings and-”
Annoyed by Hawks’s bluffing, Dabi interjects.
“I never said that I hadn’t caught feelings, you idiot; just that we shouldn’t label whatever it is that we are,” Dabi rolls over to face away from Hawks. He’s unsurprised when Hawks scoots closer and tosses an arm over his waist. “You better be out of here by the time I wake up tomorrow.”
“Trust me, Dabi, you won’t even know I was here in the first place.”
Dabi scoffs and closes his eyes, unable to shake the uneasiness that comes with someone holding him so sweetly. And, for a moment before he drifts off into sleep, Dabi briefly wonders if this is what love- or friendship, or whatever the hell this is- is supposed to feel like, like someone trusting you to take care of them and offering you affection in return, like the scent of burnt skin and blood and sweat lingering on his bedsheets.
When he wakes up the following afternoon, Dabi is so groggy that he almost forgets what occurred the night before until he sees red splotches on his bedding. He glances over at the other side of the bed to see that it’s empty, but that there’s still a few strands of blond hair left behind on one of the pillows. Then, he rolls out of bed so he can check the bathroom and balcony.
As he expected, Hawks kept a promise for once and left before Dabi woke up. Disappointment threatens to wash over, but at the very least, Hawks was kind enough to leave a red feather on the balcony. Dabi steps outside and picks it up before the winter wind can blow it away, a fond smile threatening to take over his lips as he takes it in, knowing that Hawks will be back soon enough.
What a beautiful Valentine’s Day gift.
