Introduction:
Becoming a doctor is a noble and rewarding pursuit, driven by the desire to heal, serve, and make a positive impact on people's lives. If you've set your sights on a career in medicine after completing your 12th grade, this article will guide you through the unique steps required to embark on this remarkable journey.
Step 1: Choose the Science Stream:
To pursue a career in medicine, it is essential to opt for the science stream in your 11th and 12th grades. Focus on subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to build a strong foundation for your future medical studies.
Step 2: Prepare for Medical Entrance Examinations:
In many countries, aspiring medical professionals must pass rigorous entrance examinations to gain admission to medical colleges. Prepare for these examinations by enrolling in coaching institutes, self-study, and solving previous years' question papers. Some of the renowned medical entrance examinations include NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) in India, MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) in the United States, and BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) in the United Kingdom.
Step 3: Research and Choose a Medical College:
After successfully clearing the entrance examination, research various medical colleges and universities that offer a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent program. Consider factors such as reputation, infrastructure, faculty, clinical exposure, and opportunities for research. Pay attention to the admission process and deadlines, as they may vary between institutions.
Step 4: Complete an MBBS or Equivalent Program:
Once admitted to a medical college, the next step is to complete the MBBS program, which typically takes five to six years. During this period, you will delve deep into subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, and more. The curriculum also includes practical training through clinical rotations in various departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Psychiatry.
Step 5: Prepare for Licensing Examinations:
After completing your MBBS program, you must clear licensing examinations to obtain a medical license to practice. These exams assess your theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and ethical understanding. For example, in the United States, you need to pass the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) series, while in India, you must clear the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination) if you intend to practice after studying abroad.
Step 6: Choose a Specialization:
Medicine offers a vast array of specialties and subspecialties to pursue. Take time to explore your interests and decide on a specialization that aligns with your passion and career goals. Depending on the chosen specialization, you may need to complete additional years of residency training and fellowships.
Step 7: Residency and Fellowship Training:
To gain practical experience and expertise in your chosen specialty, you must complete a residency program. Residencies typically range from three to seven years, depending on the specialty. During this time, you will work closely with experienced doctors, further honing your clinical skills and knowledge. Some specialties may also require additional fellowship training for further specialization.
Step 8: Obtain Licensure and Certifications:
Once you have completed your residency and fellowship training, you will need to obtain the necessary licensure and certifications to practice as a specialist. These requirements may vary depending on your country and specialty. Stay updated with the regulations and licensing boards in your region to ensure compliance.

Re: the wisdom about colleges
so the thing for medical is a bit different because you have to give exams to practice in a specific country and they might have different curriculums for that so it's better to study medicine where you want to practice it (not to mention the visa and citizenship issues) but if you want to go to uk and live in London i really feel like you should go for it!!! So i had no one to tell me about all this when i was in junior year (I'm in engineering tho) but you have soooo much time to do stuff and you can absolutely get a good scholarship! The thing about uk admissions is that they put most weightage on your grades and academic achievements (compared to the usa which is more holistic and puts a good amount of weightage on extracurriculars though it is easier to get a scholarship there since uk is considered to be more of ~ cost effective ~ decision)
I know the Indian exam is cutthroat and how for med there's no good private colleges and it's all dependant on neet only! so i guess either way you decide to go, you should be more focused on academics!! for uk I'd recommend giving those international olympiads and there's also this Duke of Edinburgh thing that you should look into because they really love it when you show interest in their country!! they're going to assess grades personal statement and something huge you've done for scholarships and admission although the scholarships are more available for people in their country so you might wanna try for external scholarships ( both situated in the uni and also for students going abroad from india in india)!! but i guess my main advice is to accumulate some or the other academic achievement, and volunteering Related to your major specifically cause they're very adamant about that and that part is not very flexible!! if you wanna know about the usa adm let me know because I've more info about that
I really feel like you should talk to people who have gone there and abroad counselors who know their stuff ( a lot of them don't give a shit so find a good one that can advise you ) I'm pretty sure you'll find something useful!! I still regret i didn't have enough resources to make an informed decision and you're about to start your junior year so it's perfect!!!
Hi, hello, Thank you so much for this!!!! :) My main goal for these 2 years will definitely be good grades, A* for my three subjects and a really good percentage for twelfth boards. I don’t really put much on the table in terms of extracurriculars so that’s another reason for applying to UK over The US. I’ve taken part in olympiads!! and will be trying my best this year for an international/national rank. Thank you for telling me about the DofE, I will definitely look into it!!! I’m preparing for NEET primarily so that will hopefully with the BMAT cause I thumbed through sample papers & it does seem to cover the same topics (as the subjects are same). I’m not, per se, worried about the IELTS. For volunteering, that’s the part that I’m most clueless about cause that kind of thing isn’t required for getting into any medical college in India but once I’m through with exams, results, academics, that part may seem easier so I’m keeping it for the rear end as there is a pretty long window between neet exam versus results. I’ll definitely consult a counsellor around that time, too. Right now, focusing on my studies will prepare me for both the NEET & the collective bio-medical admission test they’ve in the UK.
#if I sound clueless again please pray correct me#asks#anonymoose#thank you again !!!!#& good luck with your stuff 💝
