The thing is: to share 6 facts about me Tagged by: @pengwenno thanks love!

1- I wish I had older siblings (being the eldest is not cool at all BTW)

2- I don’t believe in romantic love in real life. (haha what are the chances of me being Asexual and Aromatic you say? The answer is: there’s a 100% chance)

3- I was born as a premature baby.

4- because I was born prematurely I had a weak Retina, and that problem was fixed surgically, and I am also nearsighted. (I was so young at the time so I don’t remember anything, but I still have to do yearly check ups. Also, the eye-drops they give me before the check up HURT AS HELL! BTW )

5- this is a thing that is also caused to by me being a premature baby: I’m short and my hands are kinda smaller than most of the people I know, which is a thing that my siblings tease me about.

6- I really really love @trafalgarrofa and I am really grateful that I got the chance to know her, and I’m genuinely glad that she’s my best friend.

“All the Gods’ men” by Blue in Heaven

"All the Gods’ men” by Blue in Heaven is the 24th album I’ve listened to as part of this little experiment, which seems like a good time to take a step back and offer some overall thoughts about this blog for a few reasons. First, 24 is/was one of my favorite TV shows (it’s decline in its latter seasons unfortunately overshadows how truly innovative the show was for its era, but we’ll save that discussion for another time). Second, it’s a nice even number that’s almost a quarter of the way to one hundred. Third, 24 albums gives me a large enough sample size to make some general observations on cheap records.  

From the outset, I didn’t expect every album I’d listen to would be fantastic. Nor was the intent to find or pursue hidden treasures buried deep in the racks at record shops, hoping to stumble across a groundbreaking or forgotten album. Listening blindly to an album, good or bad, in itself makes for a rewarding experience and offers unexpected surprises. Particularly in an age when every bit of information gets leaked and so many opinions on bands and music is at our fingertips all of the time (with much of the same things being said about each new album), it’s refreshing and liberating to cast aside expectations of what an album should be and simply take a ride with a band you know nothing about.

Sure, I’ve enjoyed some albums more than others, but I’ve also introduced myself to music and bands I’d have never come across or thought to look for before this blog. It’s also challenged me personally to be creative in how I listen to a record and what I take away from music. Even the bad albums can give you a new perspective on what makes a song, band, or album better, worse, or different from another.

It’s also interesting to think about how only randomly listening to one album from a band can shape your opinions about them. One might have a totally different interpretation or experience with a band like Radiohead if the only album they ever heard from them was Kid A versus The King of Limbs or The Bends or any other one of their albums.

But back to "All the Gods’ men.” From its very first notes, this is an album that makes me glad I started this endeavor and was a truly stunning discovery. It’s a powerful album that doesn’t overwhelm. It’s big and dramatic without feeling forced or phony. It’s grand and sweeping yet intimate without seeming pretentious. And it’s dark and heavy without gloom or doom.

The first track “Sometimes” is a great song that only foreshadows the sounds and tone to come. It starts slow and steady with a bright guitar cascading over keyboards. The singer, whose voice reminds me of Morrissey, sounds slightly haunting as each word and verse is filled with elongated lyrics that juxtapose against the beat and drive of the guitar and drums.

“The Big Beat,” however, takes us down a bit darker, rougher path than the album opener – and that’s where the rest of the album will reside. After a great extended instrumental opening of crashing guitars and a pulsing bass line, the lead singer enters with a much more blunt approach to the lyrics than on “Sometimes.” It’s less singing and more emotive speaking – but still darkly beautiful – with lyrics like “You’re so stupid you believe in everything.” If you didn’t know any better, you might mistake this song as a lost Joy Division track.

The song bleeds right into the bass and drum kicks of “It’s Saturday,” another dark, moody piece with hovering synths in the background. But first half closer “All You Fear” might be favorite song on the album. It’s a droning, shoegaze song that’s hazy and dark yet somehow optimistic. The best lyrics come when the singer states “all you fear is already here.” While that certainly sounds pessimistic, I like to think it’s a bit hopeful. After all, if everything you fear is already here, what left do have to fear?

The album finds itself in a nice stride on the back half of the album, with more songs that, again, would be a welcome addition on any Joy Division album. Overall, it’s an album that has a sound perfect for this time of year – cool, moody, and slightly sinister. Maybe the best way to describe this album is the name of the band itself – Blue In Heaven. Heaven, one can only imagine, is majestic and beautiful – so not a place to feel blue – but there’s just a tinge of sadness to the sound.

One more note on this blog. Perhaps most practically, it’s been about buying cheap records. And if there’s one practical thing it’s taught me, it’s that a cheap record doesn’t always mean it’s of little value. Price isn’t, and shouldn’t, be an indicator of value – for music or anything else for that matter. Ultimately, we value what we choose to value. An album like “All the Gods’ men” reminded me of that, and it’s worth pausing for just a minute to think about that.
