It'd be very weird and worrying for The Lost Cause Movement to be known nationwide. But yeah that's one if the reasons why Confederate statues are a thing, alongside some school textbooks that most likely didn't survive to see the new millennium.

This is why I said surreptitious censorship, it’s the kind that doesn’t cause ripples or break tension in a serious enough way, it’s just enough that most reasonable people lets it get under their skin without resistance, and then it becomes the new norm without addressing the recursive discourse (hint: there’s always recursive discourse, censorship is part of the reason it still exists because when you don’t let ideas play out in the battlefield of ideas, idiots have excuses for why they can continue to idolize them when they get a free pass out of public criticism).

Look at the responses to the notes and notice how people are more hung up on the idea of the accusation of censorship rather than tackling the problems that it invites when you accuse ‘art’ of being the source of evils. Propaganda is a thing, sure, but handing over accountability to propaganda just means admitting people (or your culture) have weak virtues when push comes to shove. 

There’s a baked in assumption when you say “we can’t watch this without disclaimers/editing, because it promotes blank” and it’s admitting humans are brainless absorbers of art (sound similar to the male gaze, a film theory that has been debunked over and over again, yet is taught like it’s fact, hmm?). We watch violence, we commit violence, we watch sexism, we commit sexism, we watch racism, we commit racism etc... that’s how humans interpret and interact with art, we simply consume and then act on, yes? /bluefont

Personally, as a female hafu living in Canada, I say FUCK THAT, we’ve been in 50+ yrs of that historical revisionism bullshit and it’s done fuck all. Academics of all colours and genders huffing their own farts have been revising our history under the preface of “equalizing language and discourse” to be more palatable for the future with absolute disregard for context and nuance, to the point of utter self-destruction. They self-admit there’s power in language, but then in the same breath award themselves the ever-virtuous duty of being the guardians of humanitarian discourse. 

I just can’t trust like that and people are welcome to blindly support it, but don’t be surprised when your art isn’t ‘healthy’ enough for them 10 yrs later.
