A Day In My Life With Sapphie

Sapphie arrives!

It was a Friday afternoon and I was running around doing errands while I was in town before heading back up the mountain to home. I stopped by the post office and received a very stealthy, low-key white envelope from Utah—Surprise! It was Sapphie! It was with great joy that I welcomed her to Oregon, because finally! I’ve been waiting for this glorious sapphic rainbow for a LONG time. I was simply wanting to introduce her to my (gay) life so off we went to finish my errands. 

We hopped into my car, which aside from being perpetually dirty from living and working on various gravel roads, is, in true sapphic cliche, a Subaru.  Or as my friend in Utah calls it--my bluebaru. :)

Next stop, the bank. Because banks are super gay, right? They’re also super straight/bi/queer/pan/ace and every other identity. Pretty much everyone uses a bank. :)  

This is my local/regional bank named after a Native American tribe that was indigenous to the area. One of the more popular translations of the word Umpqua means “thundering waters”, of which there are many in Oregon. 

And luckily for Sapphie (and me), my next stop was right next door to the bank. We popped inside and grabbed a cold kombucha. Note to all, not only is Gingerade kombucha tasty (and good for you) on its own, but it’s super tasty with a splash of vodka and some limeade for a West Coast version of a Moscow Mule! See Sapphie’s particularly big smile with the kombucha? Yep, she knows the Moscow Mule secret. :D

Enough with the errands! My day in town was done and I drove up the mountain towards home, which just happens to be an ashram, or you can also consider it a meditation retreat center. 

Of the many pictures that welcome you upon entering the front greeting room is this one of Raja, one of the rescued tigers that we took care of for decades at our rescue sanctuary for abused exotic (and domestic) animals. Raja and I had a very special bond (and some very cool experiences together), so I wanted Sapphie to meet him. 

I walked Sappie to my rooms and she was intrigued by the colorful hanging that I have on the door. I told her that it was from a group of Tibetan monks who had stopped by the Ashland area 23 years ago and I still have the hanging. It says Om Mani Padme Om. As with most spiritual prayers/mantras, you can’t really fully explain them with words, but one of the benefits of praying this mantra is to create greater compassion. 

Later in the evening, I heard some of my fellow residents arrive home.  I wanted to introduce Sapphie to one of my favorites--Angel the fluffiest, whitest, sweetest little Pomeranian mix you will ever meet! I couldn’t get a clearer shot of Angel because she kept thinking Sapphie was a new toy for her to play with (as she thinks any and every toy is!) and she kept trying to snatch Sapphie away. Sapphie knew it was all a game and was having a great time playing keep away from Angel. See her smile?

It turns out Sapphie and I got home just in time, as we had a HUGE snowstorm come rolling in that evening, that dumped a good couple of feet of snow on the place! (something that has happened more than usual this past winter). The next morning, I took Sapphie outside to see what the world looked like. Below is Sapphie sitting next to a railing that comes up to my waist--that’s a lot of snow! Also, she is sitting in front of an outside temple to Kwan Yin that we have and behind that is our snow-filled pool. 

Finally we tramped our way through all the snow out to the parking lot where we found my bluebaru nearly buried! Yay for all-wheel-drive and good snow tires! See Sapphie? That’s her sitting in the snow above the rear tail light. 

And that, friends, is the end of my “day in the life” with Sapphie! 

Just another snapshot of gayness. We’re everywhere! :D Onto her next adventure!
