"so, how do i look?" chris asks you with an uncharacteristic nervous edge in his voice. with both hands still tending to the gold earring you were putting on, you turn away from the mirror to look at your fiance.

as soon as your eyes fall on him, they widen as you eagerly take in his form. "oh- oh my god baby you look so good!" you exclaim, unable to keep the awe out of your voice and you quickly fixed your earring, your hands now reaching forward to fix the collar of the white kurta he was wearing. and god, did he do it justice, the cloth fitting his muscular form perfectly, his veiny forearms peeking from just under where the sleeves ended.

chris grins, his ego now inflated back to normal. "think your parents will be impressed?" he asks. you huff, deciding to humor him. "i think maa is more excited about having you here than she is about me returning home after a good six months, so yes i'm pretty sure they will be." chris laughs, his chest rumbling like it always does when he guffaws.

soon, his eyes soften as he takes in your form. you're wearing a white kurti with some floral embroidery at the edges of the sleeves along with matching dupatta and salwar. "you look like a pari." your mouth falls open as you stare at him for a second when you hear him say pari in an english accent and as soon as you understand what he said, you immediately burst into giggles. "oh my god who taught you that?" you ask, as you catch your breath from laughing. chris blushes lightl, averting his gaze from you, all of a sudden very interested in your vanity mirror. "don't tell me... did you learn that from google translate..!?" once again a peal of laughter leaves your lips as you try your hardest to control it, and he presses his lips into a thin line, slightly embarrassed.

"gosh you're so sweet, you have no idea how much i love you" you mumble under your breath, shaking your head, and you smile as you kiss his cheek. "come on now, let's go. i think i heard didi call us." you say as you walk towards the door to your room, chris following you. honestly he gets so easily flustered because of you, its almost funny. its hard to believe hes such a confident and alluring figure to the public, an egotistical and expressive footballer, yet a lovesick puppy for you.

"are you guys coming?" your sister asks as she puts on her sandals, preparing to go out. you nod, "yeah go ahead we'll join you in a minute." your sister nods and leaves.

“before we leave-” you say spinning towards chris to face him, who looks at you, his eyebrows raised. “-happy holi!” you say, your hands quickly swiping some of the pink-colored powder from the tray kept on the stool near the door and coming up to his cheek and smearing it. chris's eyes widened in surprise, overtaken by the moment, the earthy smell of gulal filling his nose. he quickly recovers as he grins at you, reaching for the same powder and he too rubs it on your cheek, laughing as he does. you can't help yourself and laugh along with him. “should i take these bad boys?” he asks, gesturing towards the few water guns leaning against the stool. “you know it!” you say grinning as you take one and hand the other to him.

This is how I imagine their internal monologue was.

In the corner of his eye he sees Rin standing besides him

Sae: Speak of the devil- ah wait why is he looking at me like that? Seriously? Is he really trying to pick a fight right now? Tch, annoying little brother. Fine then two can play at this game.

And with that Sae made up his mind to ignore Rin. He can fight fire with fire, if his little brother’s gonna be like that then fine! He nods his head of to the side and with a little hmph he just focuses his eyes on the pretty wallks

meanwhile Rin:

“Shitty ass good for nothing brother, oh you’re ignoring me? You’ve got the nerve to ignore me?! Me?! HEY! Look at me you asshole. Oh I see how it is... fine I gave you a chance to talk to me. And Rin proceeded to go on and on. Ranting in his head of why Sae won't look at him and that he's gonna beat him

I can't help but wonder, that maybe the reason Sae teamed up with shidou was because:

1. He's already played with Rin before why not try other things?

2. He's either petty or really just wanna experiment with other players that is not rin.

3. He purposely didn't choose Rin because he wanted to size Rin up, check on his little brother's progress and all. Because he can't do that when they're playing together, and what better way to know if Rin improved than facing off against each other.

4. He doesn't care (Personally I don't agree with this, I think the fandom mischaracterizes Sae by making it seem like he doesn't care about Rin or is purposely being an asshole to Rin. Will probably post my take on Sae's character soon acting like it's not gonna be the same as everyone else')

Okay but I am just starting to notice how fucking talented REO is and how no one talks about it?! That dude had probably been playing soccer for the shortest time there YET he was on the top tier team in the building. The team v REO could plan the games, and read the plays WAY better than team z isagi. And not only his soccer aptitude was high to begin with (i mean they way he won that match back in high school with those giants" team [yep, the one where he got spotted] was damn impressive to say the least) he also had enough skills to manipulate the team to become his....slaves. In a way.

Only if he didn't start out as "I need nagi to win the football cup" mentality he'd probably be called the prodigy. Which, i don't see why he doesn't deserve that tag. Being a jack of all trades is damn tough and he does a pretty good job at it. you know what might've been better narrative for Halo 5?

Instead of Spartan Locke, what if it was someone from blue team? Like the whole beginning mission is them helping Chief and then he gets the 'vision' from Cortana or whatever. And everyone just???? goes along with him, which is SO sweet I am not complaining

But narratively, people were so jarred by having like,,, zero connection to this random spartan and his team. (I thought the banter was funny from the others but like...)

It would have been a much richer story if one of them split off from Chief in their mind,,, trying to stop/help? a friend? that they loved?? as opposed to "random spartan cop trying to do cop things/just doing what he's told"

we spend half the game playing as a guy we have.... zero emotional connection to it and have... no real want/desire to play as

I just think it would have been better to explore the internal conflict a bit more from blue team (they do address it, slightly, but they could have addressed it more) and by having them split off to maybe join Locke (introduce Locke later) then you can flesh out Locke himself as a device to be like empathetic (because we know he is) but try to push this blue team member to "continue to do the right thing and bring Chief in"

Honestly, the friendship/camaraderie/whatever it is b/w Shidou and Reo seems like something Reo would initiate to feel a little better about himself after Nagi left him. And good for him.r

Hey, 343. We call "expanded universes" that for a reason.

It also hurt for those of us who actually LIKED Fireteam Osiris and saw potential in the characters. Halo 5 sets up a neat "Brothers in Arms" relationship between Chief and Locke like Chief had with Arbiter in 3, maybe even a little bit of Master & Apprentice, with Locke standing to learn a lot in the days and battles to come from the much older and more experienced Master Chief. But then the next game comes and... wait where is everyone? 343 wants me to buy more books?! A lot of fans already had to buy half a library's worth just to grock Halo 5, and here's 343 repeating that mistake again!

The Halo games really have just become a means by which 343 plugs the Halo novels. "There's a book that explains that" is the constant refrain I hear these days. No. I WANT THE GAMES TO EXPLAIN IT. The games are the only thing literally EVERY Halo fan buys. EXPLAIN IT IN THE GAMES.

I will give the audio logs in Infinite SOME credit for answering SOME questions I had, but mostly it was used to introduce irrelevant subplots that actually WOULD be better as a novel. Escharum doing his damnedest to keep the ragtag and ill-fitting family that are the Banished together with the disappearance of his protege Atriox, a warrior who was like a son to him, knowing full well he doesn't have Atriox's charisma and he can't maintain the cult of personality Atriox cultivated at the core of the Banished in the same way? Or a fireteam of Spartans, feeling lost and surviving without any real support, realizing that they'll likely die one way or another, deciding to risk it all on a single desperate all-or-nothing Hail Mary attempt at cutting the head off the snake, only to fail, with their only monument being their broken bodies, and their armor that Chief has to scavenge for gear with little if any knowledge of what happened to his comrades? These are plots TAILOR MADE for a spin-off novel. But instead a HUGE CHUNK of the total audio logs gets devoted to this kind of stuff, instead of explaining where Blue and Osiris are, if they survived, and setting up a reunion in a later story — you know, something actually relevant to Master Chief's story that connects with the plot players are already familiar with.

I get that 343 wants the Halo Universe to feel like this big connected thing while keeping the "mysterious" feel of the original trilogy, but for 343 that takes the form of locking players out of the loop: deny the players critical information necessary to understanding characters or the plot (even if the players can operate without that information) and then demand they cough up $8-15 a pop to gain access to that information (or just wait until Halopedia editors inevitably do). What they keep forgetting is that the original trilogy told players everything they needed to know as the game naturally progressed. The Bungie novels were interesting and sundry, but nothing they related was essential — not even The Fall of Reach (often considered the most important book in the expanded universe) was necessary to understand anything in the games proper. And then, when Bungie actually made a GAME about Reach, they made a point to showcase a separate cast of characters on a different part of the planet, playing a different role in the battle, with an entirely different team dynamic, all for the express purpose of keeping it so that the book wasn't essential to understanding what was going on. That's the secret that 343 just doesn't get: keep the books interesting, but keep them at arm's length — the GAME should tell the players everything they need to know.

More than game mechanics or graphics, if 343 can learn to tell stories in the games the way Bungie did, and learn to keep the books away from the games, then that alone will MASSIVELY improve Halo's appeal and bring back much of what was lost.
