OMG I have given this so much thought and I want to believe that he was low key into it but would never be open about it. My only evidence is that he knew enough about lesbian culture to make a Subaru joke and it haunts me. Like what if he just befriended a bunch of dykes at a cranberries concert and they let him stick around because he beat up dudes that tried shit with them. What if when johnny says “I was partying with babes” he meant his lesbian friends.

Watching the ep I was trying to figure out Lalo's game with Nacho until I started to realise that he was ACTUALLY trusting him, which is kind of sad? It also made it obvious to me that the "nice," playful side of Lalo is as real as the menacing part. It's not affectation at all, he genuinely does like people all the way up to the point he uses them as a bullet shield and they genuinely like him back (but he pays them, so :/ idk). Dude, being a Salamanca man just seems so lonely.

Lalo definitely uses his charm to manipulate people, but I do agree that his playfulness and carefree attitude are genuine. Tony Dalton’s talked a lot about how he wanted to play him like that because guys like Lalo are hyper-aware of their mortality. If you could get shot any day, why not have a little fun? I loved seeing Lalo as the life of the party back in Mexico, but it was definitely sad that all these people who seemingly love him are people he employs/makes money for. I wouldn’t necessarily say their affection for him is completely disingenuous, because even without his money he’s still a fun and charming dude, but it’s the money that keeps them around.

It’s just good sense for anyone in Lalo’s line of work to be untrusting. But I think as a 2nd-gen narco who almost certainly grew up surrounded by sycophants, he’s probably more suspicious of people’s true intentions than most. At the end of “Bad Choice Road,” he knew he had to learn to trust someone. I think that  part of the reason he chose Nacho to be that someone was because Nacho was different from most people in his life. He was always respectful towards Lalo and gave him cursory smiles when he needed to, but he was never excessively friendly. There’s no way he would have trusted him if he felt Nacho was always desperate to please him. He chose Nacho because he thought Nacho was different, but it turns out Nacho was more duplicitous than anyone else in his life.

On paper, Lalo is one of the least sympathetic characters in the show. But everything Tony Dalton has brings to Lalo makes it so hard to hate him! He has done nothing to deserve genuine human connection, but I’m still sad that Lalo’s gonna continue to have trust issues for the rest of his (probably short) life.

no listen, I am SO down with those fics that are like, sam is a secret cobra! Because she IS!! She has the drive and determination and ass kicking ability! And I think (as an older daughter myself) she could benefit from being a little more..selfish I guess? Aware of how awesome she is? Which I think Johnny could help with.

(Also, I am ALWAYS thinking about that one scene between them in no mercy for the midlife crisis, DONT @ me)

Do you think they were trying to draw a parallel between Miguel's injury and Daniel's, but, like overshot the severity, or do you you think they're going to address Daniel's injury being more severe when ever they bring up the trophy moment and the kinda hinted at post tournament Johnny & Daniel moment Ali's unaware of?

Those are great questions! I never thought about it that way before, but now that you mention it...

I don't think the parallel is between the injuries themselves per se, there is one, but I think it's mostly between Johnny and his desire to do the right thing this time around. Miguel and Robby mirror his intentions. Albeit with harsher consequences.

With Miguel also being an amalgam of Johnny and Daniel from '84.

Prepare for another incoherent rambling!

So we know that basically Miguel represents a What if Daniel Had Joined Cobra Kai Instead - the characters are so similar in personality - AND he's a face for how Johnny wishes he were as a teenager. How Johnny wishes he were taught.

Miguel has the best parts of both Johnny and Daniel. And yet he was the aggressor in the school fight.

While Robby, who is essentially a mirror for all of Johnny's anger, represented the merciful side of karate at the time.

Cut to the balcony kick.

Miguel showed mercy, on purpose, which is what Johnny wishes he had done during the '84 tournament. Robby showed no mercy, on accident, a parallel to young Johnny who hurt Daniel on purpose. Both sides of the same coin. History repeats itself etc.

You could argue 'well Robby kicked Miguel on purpose', but he never intended for him to suffer such a severe injury. Johnny and Bobby were specifically told to take Daniel out of commission.

You could also argue that Johnny indirectly caused Miguel's fall by failing to parent Robby. The whole reap what you sow thing. The irony levels are tragic.

I have a point I swear. Which is that I think Miguel's injury was to parallel Johnny and his good intentions; what he wishes he had done instead. Having said that

What I can't figure out is why the message Johnny is getting is that it doesn't matter what your intentions are-- the results will be the same.

Because there IS the parallel of Johnny feeling responsible and terrible guilt for hurting Daniel, and for hurting Miguel by feeling as though he failed him. Even though he did everything right this time!

The results were the same.

As for the severity of Daniel's injury... I haven't seen any signs. He seemed fine in the sequel movies. But the show has already rewritten some of the movie canon, so it's not crazy to think they won't ever bring it up in the show.

And it's canon that Daniel will tell people he's fine when he's not...

There have been a handful of scenes where I thought it looked like Daniel was limping. Like this:

Could be nothing. I'd have to rewatch the whole series to remember every instance I had the inkling of a limp.

But I'm not sure if that's just me reading too much into how Daniel walks lol.

And we're definitely getting the trophy moment discussion. Hopefully next season. It'd be nice if Johnny apologized to Daniel for everything in high school and for the knee.

BUT the only reason I can see why they'd make a point to bring up the knee injury again is if Daniel gets hurt there again by an upcoming villain. If it's exploited somehow.

It's funny, in the show, Daniel seems to be more upset that he was pushed down a hill.

MAYBE the moment that Ali doesn't know about... is that Johnny already apologized to Daniel for the knee. Maybe it wasn't recieved very well. Maybe another misunderstanding happened between them about it.

Maybe they had plans to talk or hang out and Daniel never showed up because he rushed off to Okinawa and forgot all about it

And I think next season is the perfect time to bring everything out into the open.

Johnny and Daniel will be together at Miyagi-Do(there's no way Johnny can ignore how Miyagi and now Daniel saved his life), and both men will have to confront their failures with Robby.

But I have hope because Miguel represents them perfectly balanced

I've nearly finished watching The Terror for the second time around and there's two guys I still have trouble telling apart

emma LMAO i honestly thought goodsir died earlier but it was another guy with mutton chops and then i thought it was hickey’s not-boyfriend who got cut in half but it was another man. its like an extra layer of emotional jumpscares that comes with every man looking the same. keeps me on my toes! :)
