My food journey – 2 of 3

I miss my human. She left this picture of me dressed like a lobster to remind me she is somewhere warm looking at lobsters. It’s like getting a t-shirt from a friend on a vacation…just the worst. Come to think of it, she better bring me one back for me though.

She ALSO left me in charge to speak to you about my fears all by myself with her help. My human says I am strong enough to handle it. I guess we’ll see.

To be fair, I have gotten to play with my cousin and attend dog parks. Dog parks have wonderful, magical smells. I also have gotten to sleep in a proper bed and cuddle my auntie. My human doesn’t share her bed with me. She is a selfish sleeper and I am a great cuddler, if I do say so myself.

I’m distracting myself. Focus. Okay, ready set, go, now to my story:

Our relationship with food is formed young. My first parents (the humans who had me before my “forever” human) created a fear of punishment with food. It was something engrained into me so early. Just like many humans we dogs also learn things young, especially as we go through those awkward teen years. The pressure to do things “right” keeps up from listening to our bodies changes.  The body is a quiet communicator. It doesn’t always speak in black and white, yet we want it to have an instruction manual for it. Sadly, the needs of our body are ever-changing. Learning to listen to it is incredibly confusing which makes for feelings inadequacy, failure, or creating new habits that can harm us.

Like I have said before, I have struggled with not eating when I was first adopted. I was so deathly afraid of being punished if I ate or even enjoyed any treats. This caused anxiety that outweighed the desire to eat. I would not eat my food in front of any humans no matter what. I also NEVER wanted to be away from my human, so this was super hard for me. The struggle was real.

With time and patience meals became easier. I would eat the treats she would give me behind the couch where she could not see or in the dark. (Remember, if I can’t SEE her, she can’t see ME!)

It was easy for me to work with clients struggling with an eating disorder because I was too afraid to watch them eat. My human was ok with this because…I guess it is rude to watch people eat? (I know, that’s a bad excuse.)

Flash forward to my new philosophy two years later:

Humans, get over it, I want to watch you eat!

FOOD is interesting, smells good, tastes better, and I want to put everything in my mouth! I have recently figured out that the food my human leaves in the car is FREE food for me. I have been so naive. For the past two years I have let her travel in my chariot with food that was not touched by ME. She would leave bags of dog food in the car (for what she calls the “just in case”). Well, I say “just in case” is the minute I notice it!

My first experience with this food was in early October. My human went to a stretching place that teaches her downward dog (humans are so unevolved, I do that ALL the time! I don’t need a class for that!) I digress. Anyway, she left me for an hour or so in my chariot and I noticed this huge bag of kibble. I thought about it, I really did. I do not like disappointing my human. But it was at least three meals, she was never going to know. I needed a snack. SHE LEFT IT FOR ME! I AM SUPPOSED TO EAT IT!

I ate it.

I don’t know how my human knew but when she got in the car she instantly knew. She has a sixth sense about me. She always seems to know when I am doing something wrong. She says I put off a “scent”.

OK, one more story. My human went shopping for dinner items for herself before another one of those stretching sessions. While she was there she realized she left her food to be supervised by ME. ME? SERIOUSLY? I know, right?

The crazy part was that her response was FEAR not ANGER. She raced to the car to make sure that I DIDN’T consume the plastic her tasty tortillas were wrapped in. I ate 30 tortillas that night – plastic wrapper and all. Let’s just say she didn’t feel bad for me when I was struggling with my poo the next few days. The chariot we drive in was pretty messy. I earned a serious “time out” for that incident. It was fair, she had just cleaned it for me.

My human says the reason for my new-found obsession is because I come from two sides of the same coin. Not eating one side, not wanting to stop on the other. If I was going to become independent of her supervision I will need to learn this delicate balance on my own. She supervises the majority of my food intake every day. I think she would like me someday to be able to internally create my own peace and accountability with my nourishment. However, I AM A DOG and this is probably impossible for me.

But for you humans – it is possible for you.

If you keep listening to the part of you that is dependent like me and counter-act it with a little of what my human offers, the balance will eventually come. Of course it requires patience. And you can expect the occasional slip ups. But in the end there is hope for plenty of successes!

Next week, my human will step in to the conversation as she releases my video. Be patient and kind in your relationship with your body and food. It is a long term relationship that takes work every day and hopefully it can become a beautify love story. Every good love story has its bumps but the ending is why we watch them!
