Did you ever wanted your favorite book character become alive? Of course, you did. So in this game MC has a chance to meet characters from books and even fall in love with one of them (or with every one of them). Because they came out of their books to help MC open her aunt's bookstore in time. You will have a lot of work, but also plenty of time to spend it with your bookish bachelors. You can talk to them, found a place in our world that they would like to visit for a date, and even read into their story - literally - and find more about them.

This game is pretty short, cute, funny and colorful. It is lighthearted and heartwarming, with a tiny bit of drama. The art style is unique, because it differs for every character.

Because a novel is so short, romance feels too rushed, of course. Characters confess love after two days knowing each other. Ok, let's call it love on the first sight.

The other problem is that each route alone lacks a conclusion. I think that a little scene in the end would be nice. But after all, if you finish all the routes, you will have a conclusion and some bonus pictures.

MC (Nameable)

MC got a degree in English literature, but now she has a writer's block and in the meanwhile decided to come and help her aunt with the bookstore-opening project and maybe gather some inspiration for writing in the future. Hopefully romance with a book character will help with it.

She is funny, sassy and independent, but kind. I would say that her personality more or less depends on the character she is pursuing

Love Interests (MILD SPOILERS AHEAD):

Klaus

Klaus is literally the strong silent type. He is the knight from a fantasy novel and he doesn't talk a lot, but when he does, it is appropriate and to the point. He's really so cute, especially after first date. How can you not love a man, who loves all the creatures, big and small? And also cooks! Definitely a keeper.

Dr. Vincent Asimov Nightshade

Nightshade is a [mad] biology scientist from a sci-fi novel. He has seven PhD in botany - and other kinds of fantastic botany. A typical tsundere, and I love tsunderes, scientists and men in glasses. He's a bit of a narcissist, he likes talking about himself. He's sassy, clever but in fact you will find it east to embarrass him, because deep in his soul he's bashful and afraid of his own feelings. So he's confused, but it is a good thing that he will have MC at his side to help him sort the thing out.

Rosamel

Rosamel is the opposite of Nightshade. He's a poet from a fairy tale and he's in love with love. Sweet-talking, tender and romantic. Prepare yourself for a full-time love bombarding from him.

He seems giddy and airy, but I really loved how bittersweet his backstory turned out. You'll find out why despite his appearance his favorite color is blue and not pink.

Amos

Amos is a PI from a mystery detective series that MC liked as a kid. He's working with a bright young detective girl and speaks very fondly of her. So he's the only one whom MC really knew before. He's funny, smart and has got a bubbly personality and a zest for life. There's so many things that will light his interest. And he won't stop talking about them.

For me his story and character were a bit bland, not my cup of tea, but he is a nice guy anyway.

Morgan MacAllister (Mac)

Mac is a sea captain from a classic adventure novel which MC has heard about, but hasn't read, because she was intimidated by the seriousness of it. Probably it is a reference to a Moby Dick, though the plot of Mac's book ші different.

He's looking pretty much intimidating and not very talkative. Definitely not a romantic. But if MC chooses to know him better, she'll find out that he has a kind heart and a crude sense of humor. In the past he was harsh to his crew and did thing that he regrets now. But nevertheless now he's caring about MC and tries hard to help her and make her feel comfortable.

some Lesser-Known Entities in Tales from Under the Bay

The Lady in Candy Stripes: Medium power entity. In the Arteries of The Pin, she picks a victim and bends their reality in a way that simulates dementia and alzheimers. The victim is pulled through flashbacks seemingly at random, sometimes even going into what the victim believes to be the future. By the end of it, the victim is often very old. It is unclear whether the victim is actually in the future by the end, or if they come back to the "present" when the Lady in Candy Stripes selected them as a victim, only appearing elderly.

Madame Fiamma Alcina-Vera, The Poacher Witch: High power entity. Why it calls itself a "witch" isn't clear. All that is known is that it either possesses its victims or kills them and becomes an imperfect impersonation of them; either way, the victim is never seen again as they once were. It typically only has one victim at a time, and often the victim has a few abnormalities that make it obvious that the Poacher Witch has gotten to them: primarily, eyes and teeth growing on the body. It is speculated to be in some way related to the Hat Man, or other reality-crumbling entities, but there has been no confirmation.

The Leftovers: Human level entities. It isn't super uncommon for someone to slip through the cracks of reality and get caught between two or more at once, but typically the universe has a way of correcting itself. There are only three known individuals self-described as "leftovers," who were not corrected, and have uniquely odd traits. The oldest of the three (and the only adult) is Thomas, caught between 17 realities, who turns himself inside out into a bloody amalgamation of grasping arms and hands. The second oldest is Cole, caught between 3 realities, who cannot set foot on the beach, or else the sand tries to swallow him whole and spit him back out far into the bay. The youngest, who does not speak but is referred to as Teddy by the other two, is thought to be caught between 70-100 realities (Cole is adamant on the number 87). He is unable to leave more urban, populated areas. Whenever he is in immediate danger, he appears to die in an unexpected, gruesome way (the most common death, according to the other two, is a piano falling from a high place), only to reappear around a corner a few blocks away. All three of them experience the night sky being full of more stars than usual, with Teddy in particular being nearly blinded by how bright the sky is at night.

The Television Host: Lesser power entity. Occasionally, it has been spotted in the background of television programs, especially the local news stations. While the Television Host itself seems totally unmoving, it alters what is shown on screen drastically, making it appear as if someone or everyone on screen has died horribly. The most commonly referenced sighting was when one of two news anchors was crushed to death by an overhead light fixture, while the other anchor carried on like nothing was wrong, even pausing to let the dead one speak, but only a low static hum could be heard. In reality, no one was injured; it was simply a visual illusion.

The Shopper: Lesser power entity. An example of one of many mundane entities that are quite common to spot, if one knows where to look and what to look for. The Shopper may appear in multiple grocery stores at once in the same area, doing nothing but comparing the prices and expiration dates of two different loaves of bread. During the times of the Internet, before its murder, such mundane entities were far more commonly spotted through Its domain.

Dusty Grove Road: Human power entity. While the geographical location of Dusty Grove Road is a prevalent hotspot for supernatural activity, the asphalt road itself is not as powerful. The road was once a human named Lily Messala, whose body was stretched out until the full surface area of her being was the length of the road.

Mister Heart-Face: Human power entity. A dying Strukture in the 70s who, through his distorted voice, tried to ask for help from a human, but ultimately failed to get the right words out. Instead, what was heard by the human in question, a man named Vincent Victoria, was vague instructions about love and murder.

Point Lookout Lighthouse: Medium power entity. Typically, the buildings that birth Struktures are not as important as the Struktures themselves, but there are rare exceptions. Sgáire was, by all means, born like any other Strukture, where when enough people die in a building, one is born. Point Lookout Lighthouse, however, is one of two documented examples of a building killing people on its own. There are stories of people seeing imperfect, uncanny puppets of three lighthouse keepers named Percy S. Yeatman, Pamelia Edwards, and Ann Davis.

Unnamed Laundromat: Medium power entity. The only other example of a building come to life, killing people to birth a Strukture. The resulting Strukture was Gladys, otherwise known as the Bleach Witch. She and Sgáire are the only known Struktures to openly interact with humans completely openly about their non-humanity, and coincidentally are both connected to the Somerset family, having been very close to Celia Somerset and her mother, Andie Somerset, respectively.

Eden Laundromat: Medium power entity. A third case of a living building attempting to kill people on its own to birth a Strukture (and why have two of them been laundromats?). This is the only case with a living witness. It is said that witnesses to the birth of a Strukture are cursed to die outside of the grasp of common reality.

Dusty Grove Bakery: Medium power entity. A totally normal bakery on a corner of Dusty Grove Road. The only absurdity is that all baked goods inside of the bakery, regardless of if they were baked there or brought in from the outside, grow a circulatory system. Being a partially isolated community with very few visitors, the residents quickly got used to this. Most have learned how to pick out the veins, but some choose to keep the circulatory system intact, arguing that its free extra protein and iron.

Thess vs Forever Demos

It’s the Steam Next Fest again! It’s throwing me a whole lot of different sorts of things at the moment; last time I went mental over the demos was when I was up to my eyes in DREDGE, so it was giving me a lot of eldritch horror. The last few weeks, though, I’ve been playing Wylde Flowers, so I got cutesy farming sims and, because there are only so many of those, I got puzzle games too. Probably because of my daily dose of A Little To The Left. So here we go!

Venba: I heard about this one from a Guardian article ages ago, so it’s been on my wishlist a long time. It’s a cooking sim sort of thing (so it ended up being suggested to me both because it was on my wishlist and because I’ve been poking at Cook, Serve, Forever a bit lately), and has some story behind it, and there was not enough demo in my demo. I mean, yes, it was enough to let me know that yes, I want it. It was just one of those moments of “Noooooooo I’m not ready for it to be over yet!” So that one hit the top of the wish list pretty quickly.

Street of Secrets: This one’s a hidden object game along the lines of A Building Full Of Cats, from a publisher / dev team that apparently focus mostly on jigsaw puzzle type deals and hentai. Which ... I mean, okay, but give me cute relaxing hidden object games. That went high up on the wishlist pretty fast too.

Viewfinder: This is another “messing with the set dressing” puzzle and walking simulator kind of thing. First person, so I have to be careful with it, but some of the mechanics are really clever. I mean, it’s a “mess with reality a bit so you can proceed” sort of thing, so yeah, clever. Another one that is Much Want.

Word Factori: Not sure what to make of this one. It’s basically this little thing where you can put a whole bunch of letter-generating factories together to make ... well, letters and whole words. It’s cute, but I don’t know if it’s really my kind of Zen.

En Garde!: This one’s ... cute. Interestingly tactical RPG that’s mostly about fencing. Just involves a lot of blocking and stun-locking and gets a bit busy for what I personally can handle. I’d recommend it to others, though. Just I don’t think I’d get on well with it long-term. It’s still on the wishlist, but quite low down; it’d be a game for when I’m having a really good day.

Logic Town: You know those logic puzzles where you get a grid and have to determine who lives where and got what pet or whatever? Well, that’s the mechanic, but with a somewhat different layout. You get clues and use them to determine what belongs with whom, whether by being directly told or by process of elimination. This was another one that I was not ready for it to be over when the demo was done. And it doesn’t even have a solid release date - just “2023″. ...But I want it noooooooow.

Quilts & Cats of Calico: This one stays low down on the list. It’s cute, but complicated. Basically involves putting quilts together with matching of colours and patterns, and getting extra points by attracting cats with specific matches. Adorable, but a little complicated for the Zen kind of thing I’d want it for.

Tales from Candleforth: Another hidden object puzzle game sort of thing, but another one where it needs work before release. I’m fine with having to poke around to find out what you need to do, but one single solitary clue might be nice when you’re dealing with a dismembered doll-baby with flowers growing out of its head and a day / night mechanic that makes some of the flowers bloom and some wilt and at least knowing the objective might have been nice... But it’s only got “coming soon” as a release date so there’s time, I guess.

That’s about all for the moment. I did one for a farming / life sim kind of thing called Wholesome Out and About, but it wasn’t so much a demo of the game as a look at the character customisation process. Which was fun but didn’t tell me much about what the game is actually like. But that one’s TBA and struggling for money to finish up so I guess I get it. So it’ll sit and gather dust at the bottom of my wishlist for awhile, I figure. I still have something called Fall of Porcupine and a first look at House Flipper 2, not to mention a few others that have been sitting in my Demo collection for awhile, but not tonight. It’s late, I’ve had a hard week, and I have shit to do tomorrow, so that’s enough for one day. Besides, I found a whole lot of good ones, and some even come out next month!

Dating Simulator I

Saiki gets trapped in a dating sim. That’s it.

Note: See, this was what ended my writer’s block 😏 aha, it’s just a snippet of an idea I got.

Kusuo and Kusuke’s respective abilities do not mix well. At all. You’re the lucky sacrifice that gets to figure this out.

It’s late. Your phone rings. That’s normal. Picking up your phone, you see something you shouldn’t be seeing. That is not normal. An app boots up on your screen, colorful and bright in a way that makes your eyes bleed. That’s not the issue. The issue is that you do not have an app like that on your phone.

“A Guide to A Psychic’s Heart: Can You Be the One for Them???” The title is obnoxiously long. However, you’re focused on how this random app got onto your phone and is opening without your prompting. You try to escape the app, but your phone is stuck. You can’t even restart your phone.

You’re irritated. At least until you see the loading screen – there’s a blushing Saiki waiting for you. You must be going dreaming. Crushing on Saiki is one thing but manifesting the boy onto your phone is another thing entirely. You pinch yourself. It hurts like hell. You have to be awake.

Saiki’s turning around, hiding his face behind a book but there’s the telltale signs of blush blooming on his ears. The picture would be endearing if it wasn’t for the obvious frown on Saiki’s face. His lips are drawn tight, eyes narrowed in a clear scowl and then the Saiki wannabe starts to speak.

“Get me out of here.”

And this is not how dating sims are supposed to go, they aren’t supposed to tell you to leave right? But this is Saiki; maybe Saiki’s the token tsundere of the app.

“[Name], are you listening?” It goes from endearing to creepy real fast; you haven’t even mentioned your name anywhere, yet this Saiki rip-off is saying it? Is the app acting cutesy to steal all your data? Has your information already been sold off to the black market, and now there are people waiting patiently to maim you?

“[Name], I need you to do something for me—” you throw your phone away, muting it and flipping it upside down. What you can’t see can’t hurt you. You fall into a fitful rest, unbothered (for the most part) of the psychic that got stuck in your phone.

Tomorrow comes. You have to face your phone eventually. It’s supposed to be dead, needing charging but it’s still on. And Saiki’s still on screen, but this time he’s no longer blushing. He’s at a beach, clearly against his own will and Toritsuka and Aiura have appeared. Toritsuka and Aiura are having the times of their life (you can literally see the hearts surrounding them) but Saiki’s clearly pissed, refusing to even get into the water.

You unmute your phone, physically shifting back from the force of Toritsuka’s shouts. Toritsuka is getting flipped by Saiki for some unfortunate reason – you’d glanced away for a second and came back to the two of them “brawling”. If that’s what you can call

The obnoxious title reappears, “A Guide to A Psychic’s Heart: Can You Be the One for Them???” It asks you: yes or no. It must be your sleep-addled brain that prompts you to pick yes.

The screen changes from the beach: it’s a selection phase. You do the normal thing and pick the guy that’s making you hallucinate a dating sim on you phone. You pick the one and only, Saiki Kusuo. It is a bad idea.

Long, long ago, in a realm different from our own, a boy named Saiki Kusuo lived with his loving brother, Saiki Kusuke. Kusuke loved Kusuo with all his heart, yet the younger boy scorned his brother despite the love Kusuke held for him. They grew apart despite Kusuke’s best efforts—

“That is not true—” Saiki’s voice cuts off the narration, clearly annoyed but the narrator continues with their tale.

And Kusuke could only silently watch his younger brother become infected by the ways of the world. He tried his best, yet Kusuo’s frozen heart refused to thaw. Kusuo was a powerful boy. He had powers others would kill to have. Kusuke was, is a genius – he could’ve solved world hunger if he wasn’t concerned with reeling in the monster that Kusuo was becoming.

“This never even happened Kusuke—”

To save the world from certain doom, Kusuke could only seal Kusuo away in a dating simulator. Now, it is up to you to do what Kusuke could never do, and thaw the heart of Saiki Kusuo, and save the world. You are our only hope.

- It’s sunday night and local college student, Agatha, hasn’t sleep in two days, practically glued to her chair at the library, trying to absorb the maximum of information she possibly could before finals on monday morning.

- Sitting across from her is her roommate and best friend, Sophie, who doesn’t seem nearly as concerned, playing a game on her phone. Mostly because she already failed half of her courses and is considering dropping out of college to pursue a modeling career, why try at this point-

- Agatha appreciates that Sophie is keeping her company, she really does, but even if her friend was using headphones, Agatha can still hear the background music and the voice actors very clearly. That on its own was distracting enough, but it was always the same lines, with the background music looping as Sophie restarted the game prologue over and over again.

- Around the fifth time she hears the app-staring-exclamation ‘milady!’ her eye starts twitching.

- By the twelfth she slams her book shut, earning herself a glare from all the remaining students in the library.

- “How terrible do you have to be at a game to not be able to get through the prologue?” she whisper-shouts, taking the sit beside Sophie, looking at the screen.

- “That’s not the problem,” her friend defends, proceeding to explain the game.

- Trial by Tale is a recently released dating simulator that has managed to gather a cult-like following. The game was praised for its diverse range of LIs, well-written routes, stellar voice acting, high-quality art style and a beautiful soundtrack. It was apparently highly addicting as well, as Agatha had never seen Sophie be that invested in... any game... like, ever.

- Basically, the main character was transported inside a fairytale-fantasy-like world, where they were introduced as a ‘reader’ to compete in the ‘trial by tale’, a inter-worldly tournament, set up by a mysterious entity (a magical pen known as ‘the storian’), in which the winner would be granted an unconditional wish.

- “Original,” Agatha snorts.

- “Can you just shut up and listen?”

- During the prologue, the main character meets most of the main LIs and according to the player’s decisions, the game would put them into a specific route, based on affection levels with each datatable character.

- There were about thirty bad endings for the casual route (where the player either made stupid choices or didn’t gather enough affection with any LI), ranging from mildly sad to terribly gory. Then, each route had five early bad endings, that could happen during the trial, resulting in the main character’s death.

- If the player managed to win the tournament with the LI, bargaining with the storian for the survival of two competitors, then two new endings would be unlocked: a normal ending, in which the reader would wish to go home and a happy ending, in which the reader wished to remain forever in the fairytale world living happily ever after with their partner.

- “And that’s where it gets weird,” Sophie pauses, opening up the Trial By Tale wiki page. “Every single LI has a walkthrough and seven possible endings.”

- She shows Agatha a bunch of characters, offering some commentary on their personalities and backstories. Then, she pauses at the last. "All but one." The character is the prettiest, if not a bit too perfect. ‘Tedros of Camelot’, it says on the top of his page, his basic info and biography listed to the side, but it’s full of gaps, blanks and ‘???’s. It was mentioned that he was a dateable character, yet no walkthrough was provided.

- “Why doesn’t it say anything? Has he not been released?”

- “No one has managed to get his route so far, but according to the game developers, it’s possible. We don’t even know what his voice sounds like.”

- “And you think you will because…?”

- “I’m me. I’m getting Tedros’ route even if it’s the last thing I’ll do.”

- Agatha decides to leave her be, going back to the books, while asking for her to at least lower the volume.

- An hour or so goes by until Sophie grows hungry and decides to leave the library, going back to the dorm. After that, Agatha finally manages to concentrate, and time goes by in a flash.

- In fact, it passes so quickly that she’s not even sure what time it was. When did everyone leave?

- Her phone is dead and the clock on the wall is frozen at midnight. Probably broken, Agatha decides. It couldn’t be midnight, the lights were still on, the library closed at 10:30pm sharp and no one came to kick her out. She was tired, but she wasn’t deaf. She calls for the librarian.

- All the lights turn off at once. She’d be lying if she said it didn’t freak her out a bit.

- Then, she notices a blue glow from under the table. Please don’t let it be a demon.

- It’s a smartphone, with a bedazzled case, a loading blue screen emitting the light. Trial By Tale’s soundtrack starts to play and soon enough the words appear. Touch anywhere to start. That was Sophie’s phone. Which would be fine and normal and okay if Agatha wasn’t pretty sure Sophie left with it.

- The music starts to loop, and Agatha uses the light to guide her to the entrance, only to find it locked. Every other exit was blocked as well. Ha. Funny.

- Eventually, she surrenders, clicking on the screen, trying to close the app. The last thing she hears is ‘milady!’ and everything turns black as she feels the floor disappear from under her feet, her consciousness fading as she fell into an abyss of darkness.

- She wakes up lying on grass, near a gate, the words Trial By Tale engraved on top of it.

- She pinches herself, feeling it sting as she stared at the gate, pinching harder and harder to the point she nearly screamed in pain. The gate was still there. Agatha focus on her senses. She’s never able to smell things on her dreams.

- This place smells like dirt, pines, dried blood and iron.

- It’s a dream, she tries to convince herself. Very vivid dream, but it’s a dream.

- A bunch of floating text appears in front of her: Welcome, competitors!

- The storian tells Agatha everything Sophie already told her: it’s a tournament, in which 40 teens from different fairytale kingdoms, including the reader world, must compete amongst themselves for survival during 24 hours. You could pair up with someone, forming an alliance, but there could only be one winner. Then, the world froze, turning black and white, three options appearing in thin air:

A: I’m a boy

B: I’m a girl

C: I’m neither/both/something else.

- Agatha experiments. The text didn’t respond to her voice or gestures; she had to touch it. B. They disappeared up in smoke, being replaced by a new choice:

A: climb over the gate early

B: go in as soon as the gong goes off

C: run into the woods

- All of those sound horrible, she’ll hang around here, thank you very much.

- Agatha decides to pick B, because it sounded the least likely to get her killed. Tapping the option, color returns and more texts appears, telling her the rest of the rules. Apparently, all forms of magic and weapons were allowed, as it was a tournament to the death.

- Well, she had neither a weapon nor any magic, geez, things were certainly looking up.

- A gong can be heard and Agatha waits for her legs to magically move according to her choice.

- They don’t.

- She debates on staying put for a few minutes, maybe way too many, but then she remembers: casual route endings vary from mildly sad to terribly gory. Agatha doesn’t wanna find out which one she’d get by sticking around.

- Her future now depends on her romancing one of these pieces of code. Thankfully, it was just a dream, right?

- Inside the arena (?), she gets some other choices, which Agatha uses to her advantage, trying to figure out which LI she was going for and how to win them over.

- Hort, according to her friend, was the easiest to please and the most boring of them all. Nicola was efficient and Sophie had managed to unlock her happy ending without a walkthrough. Aric was a psycho, and so was Japeth. Don’t pick Rhian, her friend had warned. Anadil was a hard one to guess without the walkthough, Hester was super hot and Agatha’s type but that could go very wrong (clearly her type wasn’t working out, as she was painfully single) and-

- Is that Japeth or Rhian? She can’t tell, but he’s coming her way.

A: introduce yourself

B: try to kill him

C: hide behind the rock

- She chooses C, but climbs a tree instead, because he surely would be able to see her behind the rock, was he blind or something?

- “You sure are taking your time choosing,” a voice whispers from the branch above her, nearly giving her a heart attack, “...first time player maybe? Or just dumb?”

- Tedros, the mysterious character, was looking down at her, resting on a higher branch.

- Agatha glares at him before blurting: “You’re shorter than you look on your CG.”

- He chokes. “You can hear me?”

- “Why are you british?” she notices the accent, given how different it sounded from all the other voice actors.

- “I’m bi,” he frowns at her in offended confusion.

- (The himbo energy in this bus is astronomical.)

- They bicker a bit and Japeth grows suspicious of the hushed conversation, nearing the tree. Tedros asks for her help taking him down. Agatha is like, sure, whatever at this point, just trying to forget that Tedros broke the fourth wall. It’s a dream, don’t overthink too much.

- She distracts Japeth, and Tedros tries to ambush him, but it backfires horribly, resulting in Tedros now being a few seconds away from dying a very very painful death.

A: run away

B: ally yourself with Japeth

- Agatha hesitates over option A, convincing herself that Tedros wasn’t a real person. He was a just a character in a game. But while the entire world is black and white waiting for her answer, she swears his eyes remain icy blue.

- Trick of the light?

- She presses A but throws herself towards Japeth, colliding with him. Agatha ends up being stabbed in the arm, but otherwise fine, which is more than Japeth can say, as he fell into a conveniently located black hole. That hurt like a bitch, how is this a dream?

- Tedros is shook.

- “What did you do? How did you even-” he eyes the blood in her arm. “You’re bleeding!” Tedros rips his shirt to wrap it around the wound, and Agatha does her best not to stare at him while he tends to the wound.

- A blue ribbon in the sky tells Agatha she is now on Tedros’ route. A ribbon they can both read.

- “That’s… troublesome.”

- “What, is your route cursed or something?”

- “...”

- “It’s totally cursed, isn’t it?”

- They argue a bunch and Agatha tries to ditch him but ends up almost dying twice. Tedros saves her, and insists that since he accidentally gave her his route, he’ll help her stay alive for as long as he can.

- Together they figure out that Agatha’s ability to disobey the game choices might be able to uncurse his route, hopefully sending her home by the end and resetting the game as it was meant to be, allowing people play his route.

- Agatha is pretty sure Tedros is not telling her something, but she kinda does owns him her life now (“2x1, sucks to suck, reader.”) and he offered to share some of his food and hiding spot with her. Doesn’t hurt that he clearly knew how to fight and had a big sword, while Agatha had.... free will and nothing else apparently???

- They end up talking over fruits and water (we love a healthy king) in a cave and Agatha finds out basically every other character’s backstory, learning a ton about the context of these trials as well as what the game felt like for the characters.

- According to Tedros, every other character was doomed to repeat the same route and actions following the reader’s choices, only to lose all memories by the end, as the game reseted. They were all blissfully ignorant of the fact that this was, in fact, a dating simulator. All of them but Tedros. When Agatha asks him why, he closes off:

- “Every single character has a core wish they want fulfilled. It can be the same wish every time, or it can change once your route resets. My original wish contradicted the memory reset, so no one has been able to play my route at all. And if no one plays, I can’t reset. If you go home and the game resets, I’ll make a different wish and my route should be fixed for good.”

- Agatha doesn’t ask what he wished for and he doesn’t tell her either; it feels like way too personal of a question for strangers eating berries in a cave.

- She does ask him what his new wish will be, though.

- “I’ll restore my kingdom back to its former glory,” he starts, a certain sadness in his eyes. “They deserve a prince who doesn’t waste time wishing for-” Tedros interrupts himself, telling her about his kingdom instead.

- Agatha knows he’s related to King Arthur due to his name on the Trial By Tale wiki, but she’s surprised that he actually gives her that info willingly. He is indeed the prince of Camelot, but his mother abandoned the palace when he was nine and then his father died a few years later, sending the kingdom into despair and disgrace.

- (“That’s rough, buddy.”)

- To lighten the mood, she decides to tell him about ‘the reader world’.

- “To exist in your world might be something then,” he smiles, “I mean, beats hanging around here. You said you have a machine that can play music anytime you want?”

- Tedros is fascinated with everything and asks her about all sorts of stuff, like about politics, lgbtqa+ rights, tik tok, food, the economy, school and fashion trends. Also, memes, lots of memes.

- They spend like 8 hours straight hidden in a cave, just talking, bickering and actually having a lot of fun. The lack of choices even makes her forget she was still in a game.

- Tedros notices how tired she looks and offers to keep watch while she sleeps.

A: say no as a joke

B: outright refuse

- Agatha taps A.

- “Sure, do you mind if I lean on you though?”

- Is this like a date or are we like doing my route and you’re sleeping on my arm platonically? Tedros is shook, part 2.

- Agatha tries not to fall asleep, but she does take a nap, leaning on his shoulder. Surprisingly enough, an hour later she’s still alive, but her head was now on his lap and he was petting her hair.

- “Hi.”

A: get up

B: kiss him

- She doesn’t wanna get up, but she doesn’t really feel like kissing him would be appropriate for the moment. She presses B, yet remains still for next few minutes. Tedros looks a bit disappointed, as if he was waiting for her.

- “Aren’t you going to kiss me?”

- “Do you want me to?”

- He doesn’t reply immediately, running his fingers through her hair. “Everyone wants to kiss me. I’m hot, I’m a prince and I’m rich.”

- “You’re gonna need to do better than that to get me to kiss you,” Agatha tells him. “If we survive this I’ll kiss you once, just before we unlock your normal ending and I go home. For a CG.”

- “But then I won’t remember it at all.”

- The comment makes her nervous. Once this is over and Tedros gets his route unlocked, he’s gonna be just another character. He’ll say things like that to everyone. Agatha has to chastise herself for growing attached to a video game character. He’s not real. He wasn’t yours to begin with, you’ve known him for less than a day. Get a grip.

- They stay in silence until another gong goes off, the storian’s text showing up in the air: “12 hours left. Only 10 competitors remain.”

A: stay in the cave

B: leave

- Agatha chooses B and they head out of the cave to see who else was alive, just in time to not be crushed under heavy rocks. Strangely they don’t bump into anyone. What they do run into, though, is a bunch of traps and creatures meant to randomly eliminate competitors. Great.

- Somehow, Agatha always chooses the right option and alters her actions just enough to save them at the last minute. Is she a pro-gamer? One can only marvel at how lucky she’s been getting in this game. No, but like, really, is she? Tedros is impressed.

- At the 6 hour mark, there’s 4 people left, including the two of them. He’s been eyeing Agatha weirdly and she doesn’t know what to think of it because she liked hanging out with him, but at the same time, he is a piece of code.

- There’s like, a dramatic confrontation with the other two competitors, which turn out to be Aric and Hester, not as a pair, but as individuals, and it ends up working out in Tedros and Agatha’s favor, as those two end up murdering each othe while Tedros and Agatha have the advantage of teamwork. It’s a great action sequence, but if you’ve read this far, I’m pretty sure you’re not here for the action.

- Anyway, the storian appears, but unlike the other routes, instead of giving Agatha the opportunity to bargain for them both to survive, her options are:

A: kill Tedros

B: kill Tedros

- Agatha doesn’t tap either. She stays still, glaring at the pen while the world remained black and white.

- Then, the entire arena starts to shake, the game glitching as Tedros moves, his colors fading in and out, his expression tortured, as if just smiling at her was painful, his eyes glowing unnaturally blue. “Let’s get you home,” he mouths, before stabbing himself with his own sword, falling to the floor as the colors returned for good.

- Agatha couldn’t breathe, kneeling beside him.

- “To meet someone who’d love me for me,” he admits, bleeding out into the ground, a single tear running down his face. “That was my original wish. And then I met you.”

- She kisses him on the lips, and as you know, true love’s kiss breaks every spell, heals every wound and transcends the limits of storytelling.

- Tedros’ chest is slowly healing, but just as he gets stronger, Agatha grows weaker, starting to disappear through his fingers in rays of lights, back to the reader’s world, leaving a lonely prince by himself in a bloody arena with a magical pen.

- “Unconditional wish for the winner, hm?”

- Back at the library, Agatha wakes up with a snap, falling off her chair.

- The clock on the wall reads 10pm and the few students left at the library glare at her. She hurries to gather her things in her arms, going back to her dorm trying to make sense of what just happened. It was all a dream. It had to be because her arm is intact. She has been running on too much caffeine, finals start the next morning, she was stressed, that’s all.

- Sophie is still playing the game once Agatha arrives at the dorm, and as soon as she walks in, her friend tells her the news:

- “See, darling, I told you I’d get Chaddick’s route eventually!”

- Chaddick’s route?

- Agatha doesn’t even reply, going straight to bed, still haunted. That night, she has no dreams of handsome boys in caves, neither does she dream of blue-eyed princes bleeding out.

- Monday afternoon, though, a distracted Agatha is walking back to her dorm after taking her exams, when she bumps into someone, nearly knocking her over. She is about to yell at the stranger when her voice gets caught on her throat.

- “To exist in your world might be something,” the familiar stranger smiles at her, “I mean, I’m Tedros Pendragon, nice to meet you.”

2x4 - Dateline

Original air date: Oct 1, 1997

Anyone who was holding their breath for me to get back to this, thank you. Been going through a lot like most people right now but I had to remember this blog is a good distraction because I get to write about one of my favorite shows growing up. Anyways, enjoy. :)

Let’s talk about cock-blocking or to be more gender inclusive...actually, I can’t think of a term similar that utilizes both a male and female part. Anyhoo, let’s talk about it.

I’ve done it (unintentionally). You’ve done it. We’ve all had it done to us as well. Like the night you finally got a chance to be alone with your dipshit crush and your annoying friend tried to insert herself until she finally realized what was going on and left you two alone so you could have your first kiss ever at age 19.

TJ is an extreme cock blocker. He will break your shit up and then pout because he’s still just a kid. Normally, TJ only wants to punish Marcus by enacting this cruel tactic but in this episode, he shifts gears to the person who is both a mother and father to him: Daddy Flody.

We begin this episode at a supermarket. Tj is checking out cereals and Floyd is checking out dat ass.

TJ catches Floyd staring and in his precocious little way, starts asking him questions about women. It kind of reminds me of Frank from Milk Money. which is a horrible movie that I adore and you should watch it because despite a little kid befriending a prostitute, it’s still a decent 90s coming-of-age tale. And Alex DeLarge is in it.

After TJ makes his dad sweat further by asking what body type gets his penis erect, TJ comes to the conclusion that Floyd is lonely and could probably benefit from some female companionship.

Cut to TJ on an unrealistically chatty PC barking at TJ to fill in the boxes for Floyd. I don’t know about you, but if my computer kept talking to me, I’d throw it out of the fucking window. I am so glad websites that talk at you are obsolete. Apparently, this computer is also sentient because TJ pauses for just a moment too long when Marcus comes in and this impatient computer bitch asks for the rest of the info in a more demanding tone.

But because TJ was distracted, he inputs his own height instead of his dad’s and the computer announces that she’s transferring him to their little people’s section. Hey, they gotta find love too!

Marcus is skeptical of why TJ is trying to set Floyd up. Just then, Yvette walks in and asks who is using her eyeliner to write down phone messages, which I totally expect a straight man to do. After fessing up, Marcus asks Yvette to dissuade TJ from setting up his dad. Yvette then uses her soon-to-be psychology degree on Marcus and reasons that he might be a little salty because he doesn’t want another woman to replace his mom. But no, Marcus is a teenage boy and completely lacking depth until certain episodes call for it. Instead, he says he just wants the car on weekend evenings so he can try to bang his latest girl of the week. Of course, he could just be deflecting to avoid a heavy conversation but I’m gonna go with the former because Marcus is the horniest boy on the show.

Yvette decides to help TJ since Floyd has few dating options. Her plan is to beef up his personal ad by making him younger and a fan of soul food and Maya Angelou. Marcus is still not with the shits and says that nobody wants to date an “old guy with three kids.” Completely forgetting about the fact that his dad is an attractive man, this happens instead:

TJ and the gang are now making final cuts on the 130 prospects Floyd had. I mean, that’s great and all but I’m sure at least half of those women were catfishes. Then again, in the 90s, maybe there was more legitimacy since there wasn’t enough technology to hide behind? I dunno. But Floyd definitely has some options.

While deliberating who will receive the clock from Floyd, Marcus makes what would be considered a transphobic comment questing if some of them really are women and how he doesn’t want Floyd to end up like Eddie Murphy. Mo, on the other hand is questing if this is even legal. Mo is a teenage boy and is probably likening it to what Tinder now is: a place to meet horny individuals.

Yvette thinks the ladies are good picks but then begins nitpicking their flaws, among one of them being that one of the ladies has breast implants. Because women who get surgeries to help boost their self esteem apparently don’t deserve love? Yvette is such a hypocrite as we’ll see in the future. Mo then begins taking the rejected pics because he loves older women, especially ones with perceived low self esteem. Just then, Floyd comes in the room and the gang has to cover up their dirty work. Floyd makes a bad joke and then dips out.

They eventually settle on a light-skinned natural woman named Jamie. They agree to meet at the grocery store, sot hat’s where we end up. Marcus is acting like he’s never seen pretty girls outside of school and leaves to spit game at women who just wanna be left alone so they can buy their frozen pizza and wine in peace.

Jamie sees who she thinks is her suitor and immediately is pissed because she, you know, thought she’d be meeting Floyd and not a little boy. Yvette comes over to smooth things over and convinces Jamie to meet Floyd. Well, TJ’s cute face convinced her after she was understandably freaked out. They go to meet Floyd.

Jamie shows up and explains what happened and that she was pre-screened to make sure she wasn’t a guy. Floyd actually even gives her an up and down look before she says she passed! Pretty sure this also wouldn’t go over well today. Jamie and Floyd, however, hit it off and leave to go on a date. When they get back, Yvette and TJ are spying on the new couple to see how it went. Floyd was actually bigging up TJ and talking about how smart he is to Jamie when they got in. Aww. Floyd is proud of his son for hooking him up. Yvette is noticeably annoyed at how he gets all of the credit, but I mean, it was his idea. Yvette just helped him out.

Upon completion of this totally selfless act to get his father some love, TJ is happy at first. Yay TJ! You’re on the right track to becoming a thoughtful human be--

Sike! TJ immediately regrets this decision once he realizes that his father having a personal life means that he won’t see him as much. TJ has a basketball game coming up that Floyd won’t be able to attend now. Yvette offers to take him but it’s not the same because Yvette is a girl and girls aren’t fun. And just like that, TJ the petty, cock-blocking asshole comes back.

The next day, TJ and Floyd are playing basketball when Jamie comes home. Floyd invites her to play but TJ is all like “bitch, wait your turn” and then Floyd puts her on TJ’s team. She then bribes TJ with the food she’s about to cook for them. He agrees but then Jamie and Floyd start flirting because duh. TJ leaves in a jealous fit, upset that this woman he hooked his father up with has the gall to want to spend time with him. He simulates what he wants to do to her body on a bag of Funions.

I have to say though, how long was the frame of this episode? Days? Weeks? Jamie has essentially become their stepmom. She’s even giving Marcus advice on how to treat a girl like a human being instead of a meat popsicle with titties. Yvette and Marcus then leave, allowing Jamie and Floyd their Blockbuster and Chill time with The Preacher’s Wife.

But TJ is a boner detector because as soon as Jamie and Floyd are about to mash faces, TJ whimpers for his pa because he doesn’t feel good. We think Floyd banished him to his room but then TJ comes over and pushes the two would-be lovers apart so he can ruin their night. Jamie eventually decides to leave, even though it’s clear she was holding out in case she could get a piece of Floyd but TJ completely squashed that possibility. Floyd actually whines when Jamie says she’s leaving. Aww. Floyd is lonely. Does TJ care? Of course not.

TJ sounds perfectly fine when he says he’s sorry he ruined the night. Father and son decide to just watch the movie together instead.

The next day at school, Marcus is spitting his game at the girl he went on a date with. Turns out, treating women like actual people has been working well for him! He’s even going on a second date. Yvette comes by to let TJ know that she’s picking him up again. TJ is, of course, pissed because Jamie had come over to the house the night before, albeit dick-less. Yvette has to explain to TJ that when you date someone, the goal is to see them frequently and that he’s the reason their last date sucked. She then shatters Marcus’s dreams by letting him know that Floyd is taking his car on his date. Guess Marcus is gonna have to make out on the bus.

TJ’s lips are all puckered because he’s losing his father to another woman. He’s so distressed that he actually picks a fight with a senior. Mo steps in and literally drags TJ home. No, seriously. He carried TJ like a bag of groceries all the way to the Henderson house during school. Then he transformed into a therapist to get to the root of TJ’s outburst. This is during school hours. Mo skipped school to bring TJ home and give Floyd advice. Mo is amazing.

TJ is playing basketball with himself when Floyd comes in and then he spills that he’s sick of Jamie. Floyd reminds TJ that he’s the one who set them up and I guess TJ didn’t know things would actually change. Now would have been a good time to mention if he feels some way about another woman besides Yvette playing a maternal figure in the wake of his mother’s never explained death. But Floyd does a good job as usual and says this is temporary because when TJ is a teenager, he won’t want anything to do with Floyd. TJ finally stops being a prick and Floyd offers to be careful about how he schedules his time and then continues the basketball game he let Jamie interrupt previously. Aww Floyd. Too bad TJ is probably going to hold onto this for a while because he was giving his dad a lot of shit in the end credits. This isn’t even the last time he does this to Floyd and we never see Jamie again, so I guess it’s safe to assume that TJ killed Jamie.

Things I noticed:

- Can we just take a moment to appreciate how hot Floyd is? How could Marcus ever think his dad wouldn’t be able to attract women?

- This brilliant cover for the gang if Floyd came in during the date deliberation:

- Marcus doesn’t want Floyd to go out on dates because he wants the car to himself on the weekends. He says if Floyd starts going out, he’s making out in the back of the bus. Yvette then says, “No, thanks to Rosa Parks, you can make out anywhere on the bus.” Brilliant retort. I really hand it to the writers of this show.

He ended up becoming the new god of the local kobolds (after the party slayed the aboleth that had previously held the position)

briefly abducted by aliens, whose starship was named Vingilot (but was, I’ll concede, a standard alien spaceship)

New York City is literally a ghost city. the buildings are mostly ghosts. the exception is Times Square itself, which was protected by the ghost-in-the-machine of Warren Buffet, who has occupied the billboards there for the last 400+ years and incidentally gone fucking bonkers

straight-up put the ghost of my aunt and the ghosts of her cats in the ghost of her apartment, too

a powerful and intricate abjuration spell cast across the whole city of Avonlea, Newfoundland, based on a twisted hunk of metal scavenged from a neighboring city (since abandoned to the waves) that naturally emits powerful energy of welcome and peace

my Feywild is basically a giant forest in which you might meet absolutely any fictional character whose ever plausibly been in a forest or a fairy tale, and several who haven’t. I made a montage

I essentially paused the plot for several months recently to have the group travel by horse and foot from LA to Seattle while they’re all throwing off wild magic 24/7, and classic zany episodes included:

canon but to be played later for chaotic fun session where all the PCs are all turned to stone or something and it’s up to the familiars and other sentient magical companions, animal, plant, and other, to save the day
