First of all, all the members are so cool! 😭 The energy those girls are exuding is just so bright, and all around the place, they are the definition of spreading positivity to the masses. They know how to have a bit of fun and connect not only with the public but also between each other, as the debut lineup found a common spell instantly, as if they were meant to be in one group. Now we'll talk more about the members personalities, and later I'll say a bit about their in-group dynamics.

MANON

The Queen of Cups, The Strength, The Star 𖹭

Manon is such a sincere person with a beautiful soul. Her heart is genuinely very good, and she's getting unappreciated for that. At the end of the day, there aren't a lot of people quite like her. I feel like she's also struggling with her own emotions, but she's keeping this ocean of emotions to herself because she thinks that nobody would appreciate her vulnerability. She's so strong for fighting through the difficulties and the circumstances she was put in, as this was something completely new for her, and she wasn't 100% sure she made the right decision to even join the group after being announced. But I think she made the right decision and remained. She has strong star potential, and with more improvement, she'll be able to reach high peaks. She was also the final piece of the puzzle that the group needed—the connection point. Although she has a fragile heart and can get overwhelmed by her own emotions, she knows how to keep her own image and continue to fulfill her obligations.

SOPHIA

The Empress, The High Priestess, 2 of Pentacles 𖹭

Oh, that's queenie! 👸 She has a personality with leaderlike qualities and a lot of compassion for what other people have been through in their lives. Her energy is giving "girl power,"  like she'll gladly carry after her the people who may struggle. Sometimes she may appear unrealistically gentle and soft to the public that is not that familiar with her, to the point where everybody appears oblivious to her strong spirit and rich inner world. She's also holding herself to a high standard in everything, not wanting to appear lesser than anybody else. She can stand by her idea in order to protect her heart from being damaged. Also, her emotional palette is very diverse; she can experience a full spectrum of them, and that's cool, she has duality, something that will most probably help her in her artistic career.

DANIELA

The Fool, The Page of Cups, 7 of Cups 𖹭

She's a bit crazy in a good sense! Her energy is very different from that of the other members. While the other girls are advocating for team building and are good team players, she's more of an independent type. She would make a good solo artist, but starting a group is not a bad decision for her either; she'll gather a lot of experience. The same as Sophia, she has a vast and cosmic inner world. She's so imaginative, sometimes floating in her own fantasies. She most probably had people in her life that told her that she's hard to figure out or that she has a lot of everchanging interests and hobbies, and words like, "Girl, stick to something! You change your attitude/personality/vibe way too much every time." They are just not grasping that she's naturally a chaotic person, and that's not a bad thing. The other way around, that shows she can and will be embodying anything that she will consider her aesthetic, like a chameleon, and thanks to that, she will stand out a lot as time passes.

LARA

The Tower, The Queen of Wands, The Sun 𖹭

The universe has blessed this girl with so much originality! To the point where all that originality can be compared to a bomb that is tick-tack... about to EXPLODE 💥 In a nutshell, Lara is so cool! She likes to keep things real with everybody, and her personality can serve as a blueprint for many other people because she has those special qualities that make her unique. She has a strong backbone to herself, and at first you might think she's so serious, but nah! Lara is sparkly and so funny! She will truly shine as a performer, and with the constant development of her own skills, she will thrive! Everybody should keep an eye on her; she's full of surprises.

She's on her own wavelength! It's looking like she's in the chapter of her life where she's discovering her own personality, and that's okay; she's the second youngest member after all. I feel like, thanks to this experience, she will discover a lot of new things about herself and will show impressive improvement. Until that time, her light will start to shine brightly to the point where it's dazzling, she will be somewhere in the second roles, as if she will be underappreciated and underrated! People will be sleeping on her for some time, and VERY BAD for them! If there's a member whose potential is still leashed, then that's Megan. Rumors   had   soared   through   the   streets   of   Corona,   rumors   about   a   Queen   that   was   blessed   with   magic   of   ice   and   snow!   Naturally   Rapunzel   was   curious,   she   hadn't   ever   met   anyone   else   who   was   able   to   use   magic   ...   and   though   their   powers   sounded   quite   different   she   figured   they'd   still   be   able   to   relate   to   each   other!   Which   is   why   finally   getting   to   visit   the   Kingdom   of   Arendelle   was   so   exciting.

When   her   ship   docked,   the   sun   maiden   practically   dashed   off   the   vessel,   emerald   eyes   filled   with   childlike   wonder   as   she   scanned   new   surroundings!   Arendelle   was   indeed   just   as   lovely   as   Corona!   But   also   very   different   -

The   thing   that   stood   out   most   was   the   Castle!   Where   she   figured   she'd   meet   Queen   Elsa!

"I   bet   she's   really   nice!"   her   words   were   directed   at   Pascal   whom   was   perched   on   her   shoulder.

In   response,   he   gave   a   pleasant   croak.   The   chameleon   seemed   just   as   happy   to   be   there   as   she   was.

THE SILENA POST THE WORLD HAS BEEN WAITNG FOR !!

Silena is a semi main character and if she was in an official comic run, she would be the main character for a good stack of volumes.

At the start of her story, Silena is 14. A sophomore in Highschool and has a decent group of friends including Gwen, MJ, (Melis Jane) , Percy (Percy Parker), and Hazel Osborne .

She gets her mysterio powers while on a history class field trip where both her and Percy get their powers, Percy is blessed by a spider god while Silena basically has a whole magic necklace (later revealed to be a fragment of a reality stone) (this is also canon btw it’s canon every verse has its own set of stones)

Silena being the over imaginative , artsy,

fantasy and magical girl obsessed nerd she is , decides to use her powers for good and becomes “Mysteria”

It’s rather rocky at first , navigating how to use the stone, not getting flattened by villains, etc. her and Percy reveal their identities to another and grow closer as friends.

Percy has a few things happen to him as well such as MJ (his gf) being completely replaced by a chameleon from another universe .

While Percy is busy, he ignores a mugging (which happens to be Silenas dad , Quentin Beck) thinking the police can deal with it.

Silena finds her dad and thinks he’s dead. (dw he is not)

Silena , being immature and this being a “with great power comes great responsibility “ moment for Percy and Silena, Both see it in different ways .

Silena sees it as a way of revenge

Percy sees it as a way to do better.

A fight breaks out between the two (and by fight I mean fist fight.) and the two reconcile . Which is shortly interrupted by Swarm. (Also no. He is not a Nazi. I’m Jew/Romani. Why tf would I make that apart of his character) and Percy gets the “NO NOT THE BEES” treatment. (Sorry Perc, at least you and MJ can chill together in the after life)

Silena now alone , SMITES SWARM. Or tries to but it flees . Later he is defeated. This catches the eye of silvermane who “takes silena under her wing” aka. Straight up

manipulates her and makes her life straight up hell.

Brief interlude of Villains like Shocker, Rhino, Chamelon (the real one not the other universe one Dr strange killed that one) Black cat, and Wolfmann

Also a breif romance between Molten girl (liz Allen) but it ends up in a Peter and Gwen situation.

Also around this time there’s a romance between Silena and her Electra.

Between basically being under silvermanes thumb and getting magical help from Dr Stange , Silenas Life is very busy. Silena also gets other friends like Marcos (hydro man) , Lottie (White rabbit), and some minor villains like Lizard (Kris Connors ) , and Morbius (Dr.Maeve Morbius)

Silverman gets defeated via suit technicality . (Water + technology isn’t good.) also big reveal, Silenas dad is in one piece , Silvermane basically used him as a bargaining chip

Short clone saga arc + Jackal being the worst human being possible. (Dmitri, Both Scopions , and Willow the wisp respectfully experience the horrors )

And Krystal Riley (Kaine with Ben Riley’s personality.)

Silena gets along great with the two at first but it is quickly shown that Bianca is the evil evil twin. Aka. No morals Spider-Man who is feral. She’s also just cruel to everyone .meanwhile Quentin tries to be a hero like Silena (and gets utterly embarrassed but it’s ok. Can you blame him?? He is just a normal guy?)

And Bianca is the first to get the venom symbiote and genuinely has to be put down after mutating into a spider creature . Honestly very cathartic for Silena and Krystal. (Bianca is a toxic friend.)

Personality wise ; Silenas personality is very fluctuating. In video game terms she would have a changling soul from fear and hunger. In normal terms she has a little bit of an identity crisis , and depending on the person her personality changes. She can either be very optimistic or very pessimistic. Very caring or very crude. Etc etc . But she is very imaginative and a problem solver. Starting out very anxious and having her small handful of friends she grows as a character and branches out more and is more confident. That’s not to say though what she’s experienced hasn’t had an affect on her. She is still a major people pleaser most of the time because of the constant beratment from Silvermane and Bianca . And even then , as a sort of defense mechanism , she’s used the stone to seal away memories she never wants to remember again. Ever. While also being a people pleaser she can be chaotic. Often poking fun (out of endearment) at her friends or others. Though that’s not to say she’s very receptive to sarcasm or cruel jokes.she’s a very fluctuating character personality wise like I said . There is no TRUE way to describe her. She bullies and is also the bullied if that makes sense.

Also another key part is she down plays her trauma. She will always believe that what happened or happens to her is no big deal. That it’s fine and that you shouldn’t worry and that no, the glove on her arm is just for decoration and style! And no you shouldn’t tell her dad because he has so much on his shoulder’s already! Why stress him out with something that he shouldn’t worry about!

Presenting Katie Wolfe, a.k.a Copycat!

I suck at drawing without a base, so here's the references I used!

First one I genuinely have no clue. I drew it like 4 or 5 years ago in my high school-provided subscription of Photoshop so I do not have the files. I searched up something along the lines of "superhero pose drawing reference female" though.

Now that the art showcase is complete, I shall tell her story! Well, part of it. You see Katie is part of an entire multiverse I created called FiveOh Comics. At my count right now, there's 285 characters in this universe (plus an rp Discord server which I can link to anyone interested in joining). There's a ton of storylines all over the universe, and Copycat in particular has an entire 100 episode-10 season show I'm writing about her that I want to get officially produced, but I don't have time to go through all of it today, so here's the essentials!

Katie Wolfe is an anomaly, born with superhuman powers that manifested at 10. She could copy any actions she saw other people take, so long as she physically had the capability to do so. She could also chameleon herself to look like other people, or change her own appearance. Worth mentioning also that she's bisexual and polyamorous.

She's the daughter of Timberwolf (a.k.a Theresa Wolfe), one of the most famous superheroes in the world and the leader of POW! (Protectors Of the World), the first superhero team ever. Theresa's also the smartest person in the world, and runs the company Wolfe Sciences, dedicated to creating products that advance humanity's capabilities. I'll talk about Theresa again in a later post when I've drawn a not-shitty picture of her in hero mode.

Trying to follow in her mother's footsteps, Katie helped found Alpha Sentinel, the most popular hero team in the world, since it had two former members of POW! leading it and never seemed to lose. In the fight that formed the team, Katie met a shapeshifter from a doomed civilization in the core of the Earth, who'd been jettisoned to the surface to save her. Confused and angry, she lashed out, until the soon-to-be team pacified her and they slunk off. Katie later tracked her down and brought them to her mother. After a while of acclimating to the surface and its society, she took a human form, naming herself Emily and choosing to stay with Katie and Theresa. Theresa officially adopted her, and she became Katie's sister.

After 3 successful years of Alpha Sentinel's career, tragedy struck. One member was trapped within his own mind, one was killed, a third was traumatized so bad she quarantined herself in her room for nearly a year, and a fourth was hospitalized, leaving only Katie and Stingray (aka Steven Raye, Theresa's best friend) still active heroes. Of course, though, Katie was not unaffected by this event, and she retreated into a shell for over a month, right up to the start of the Copycat series, the events of which I won't spoil.

Over the course of the show, however, she deals with her own emotional scars and brings together friends, even saving the old AS member who was trapped in his own mind, and created a new Alpha Sentinel, consisting of herself, Stingray, the previously mentioned member of AS, Riptide, Timberwolf, her sister Emily, calling herself Goop Girl, her best friend Cassie Wright, or Libra, and a wizard named Stardust.

Oh, also there's a strong chance she's a daughter of Athena. At the very least, she's been blessed, as Athena has allowed her to summon Aegis and Astrape.

I'll get to all of these characters in due time, of course, but for now, that's Katie's story! Here's some quotes from her for good measure.

How much stronger and cooler than necromancy is it?

Finally some Runesmith appreciation!

Runes are considered one of the first ever magic, so it's that old. It's a magic most often used by the goddess of Magic herself, more than her other magic in her arsenal. Blessed Magic turned Learnt, due to how many books have been written about over the centuries and Despoina not as willing on giving out her Blessing to mortals anymore. Though there are a still a few who are Blessed by her. Users of this magic are mostly Learnt types.

Rune Smithing is also a very strict discipline, since the way the runes can be and are written can have very different effects from what is intended of the Magus. So Runesmiths are taught to have very precise writing to avoid accidents, or worse.

If Necromancy is more of a passive sort of magic, Runesmith magic is more versatile and very flexible on where the rune can be written on (in the air, on paper, skin (like a tattoo) etc,.). It's almost always applied to every other magic that includes: summoning, alchemy, artificiery, exorcism, elemental magic, clerical healing, druidic healing, druid magic, astrology, infernal magic, and dreamwalker magic (to a degree).

Because of this, there are a lot of subtypes under this magic. Though for the sake of brevity, I'll be sharing the ones MC will be learning if this were to be added to the IF.

Enchantment

Not the charming kind of enchantment. It's the Weapon to Weapon +1 kind of enchantment

One of the most useful subtypes

Usually used on weapons or objects to make them more powerful or versatile, however it can be applied to the self and other people too.

Can be temporary or permanent

You can gain elemental magic this way, by writing the elemental rune you want to use on your arms, hands, legs, and chest, or on weapon or object of choice. Magi who use Enchantment this way are titled "Copycats" or "Chameleons"

Artificers are usually the ones who use this as a subdiscipline in their magic

Abjuration

Defensive magic

Very powerful depending on the amount of runes used

Protection charms can be made under this subtype

You can make protection charms for anything but against the gods

You have to be very specific on who or what you want to be protected against when writing the charm

You can make a very powerful forcefield, if you're willing to put in the effort

Usually needs an incantation, if you were to make a forcefield

This also includes banishing/exorcism. This affects all beings, though for a god it'll only last for a few minutes before they'll come back.

Necromancers usually use this subtype against spirits and hidden entities

Planerider (or Bamf-ing, according to younger Magi)

Only a few manage to master this due to needing to write in a different language you can never understand

A beloved subtype of Despoina, due to easily being able to go from realm to realm without needing to look for a portal or ask a being from another realm to take you there

You're gonna do a whole lot of studying for this, because you'll need to memorize the exact words and phrasing for the runes

Extremely long runes that needs a lot of time to write, unless you're a quick writer with clean handwriting

Can be written down beforehand and activated, however. Planeriders usually do this for convenience, and for less carpal tunnel

Legacy was always jealous of their twin sister, who seemed to garner the attention of their parents no matter how hard poor Legacy tried to get it for themself. The second youngest shapeshifter of the Cazacu family, Changeling kicked off into the 80s with a bang! His fashion and mannerisms all reminiscent of the decade he was born, not being able to let it go no matter how much time passed. A master of cruelty, psychological torture and an avid human hater, Changeling finds joy in all aspects of humanity's pain.

A lycanthrope taxidermist, and Changeling's one true love. Changeling listens to no-one, except for maybe his gorgeous boyfriend. It isn't just a one way street. Sergio helps Changeling with self control, and Changeling gets Sergio out of his depression. Despite the circumstances, the two match eachother in unsettling ways.

Brooks family was killed by a werewolf pack when he was a child, leaving Brooks as the only survivor, not without turning him into one of them first. (PJO) Distant memories of Ragnarok haunt the son of Loki and Legacy of Boreas, despite him never having been there at all. The bitter cold, the taste of frost on his tongue, and the grim succumb of death, he shivers at the thought. However, right now, he's at Camp Half-Blood with his friends, where those memories and nothing else can harm them.

(PJO) The son of Ullr always wanted to do something noble, and the army seemed as noble as it could get. However, after getting stranded in the antarctic with no gear or supplies, he regretted his decisions. His demi-godly blood, despite this, allowed him to adapt and survive in his new conditions, where he made it back home to his childhood friend and joined Camp Half-Blood.

Heulfryn

(PJO) Heulfryn struggled with his powers from a young age. His first attempt led to the blinding of his sister and his own disabling. Ever since that day, he's refused to use the powers deep inside his bones. Instead, he resorts to rune magic to channel it, and uses his powers to support his friends and allies from behind.

Little facts about nymph gurl:

Her skin is sturdier than a human's, fleshy but almost scale-like on the surface. Either a lizard, snake or fish blessed her with such a feature during her rebirth.

Berries are her favorite food, and she enjoys making a sort of fruit salad with other goodies from the generous forest. She likes to top it off with minty leaves as a garnish.

Meat is an occasional staple of her diet (like that of her animal friends), and she would hunt for either herself or alongside wolves and wild cats. Powerful bonds were built through this activity.

Her eyes are just as keen in the dark as a feline's, and her climbing abilities just as agile. If only her growls were as intimidating, sounding no different than a cub's.

Her control of the elements is limited to: communicating with trees and animals through a spiritual link, turning corpses into compost with a particular touch as she buries them, camouflaging herself against any backdrop (blessings from the elusive chameleon), growing gardens of flowers and lush vegetation with an enchanting song that breathes life (literally using her breath to breathe life into the soil and any place needing growth).

She's nakey for the most part but would often emerge from her favorite pond with moss and lily pads clinging to her figure, funnily in places that would cover her bits and pieces. Sometimes she would come out wearing a hat, complete with a croaking frog. :)

Her teeth are sharp for tearing into raw meat, and her fingers have sharp claws to use as weapons during those too-close-for-comfort encounters.

Her hair is freakishly long and unkempt, useful to use as a cushion or temporary Uber for the little creatures. After all, there's no salon in the wilderness, nor is there any need for one. In fact, the hairier, the better!

She doesn't see her body as inherently sexual but recognizes its use when luring filthy-minded men to their doom. If it means protecting her home, then she might as well make good use of it as a weapon.

I have been possessed with the concept of an Encanto/Pokemon crossover where basically everything is the same except the Madrigal family’s gifts are accompanied by an associated pokemon.

Explanations/rationale under the cut:

Abuela Alma - Volcarona

Fire type, which makes for a sensible link with an undying flame

Moth imagery, which fits for her given the butterflies that are associated with both her and the candle itself

Pseudo-legendary: roughly half its ‘dex entries talk about how it saved humans and pokemon in the past, which makes it pretty reasonable to associate it with a miracle

Julieta - Chansey

Known for its highly-nutritious eggs that even people without an appetite will devour -- fitting for someone who heals with cooking

Also very rare, making it a clear blessing to have around

While it does evolve, all of Blissey’s ‘dex entries mention that its eggs are filled with happiness, rather than having healing properties, so it makes more sense for her Gift partner to stay a Chansey rather than evolving on

Pepa - Castform

Weather control, which is a perfect fit for someone whose emotions affect the local weather

While the Castform would definitely be her Gift partner, I could definitely see her with something like Cherrim (which also changes form with the weather)

Bruno - Absol

100% of the reason this possessed me

Absol was dubbed ‘The Disaster Pokemon’ because it kept trying to warn people of foreseen danger, only to be unfairly maligned for the attempt -- seems pretty fitting for someone that gets blamed for telling people the future when they ask

While he undoubtedly has a collection of rat pokemon (Rattatas and the like) the Absol was his Gift partner, and I can’t help but think it went with him when he disappeared -- after all, the visions aren’t Absol’s fault, and it’s nice to have someone that knows what you’ve been through

Absol is also one of my favorite pokemon so

Isabela - Roserade

She obviously needs a Grass type, particularly something floral

I ended up searching through the ‘dex for something that would fit, and ended up with Roserade specifically because one of its entries talks about how the sweeter its scent, the more toxic it is (a nod to her hidden depths)

While the Roserade is undoubtedly her Gift partner, she probably has other floral pokemon around like Lilligant, Bellossom, etc.

Dolores - Clefable

It’s ‘dex entries literally note that it can hear a pin drop from half a mile away, which is how Mirabel introduces her cousin in the first place -- what more is there to say?

Another extreme rarity of a pokemon, so also likely to be seen as a blessing or sign of good fortune

Clefable is another one of my favorite pokemon okay

Luisa - Bewear

Her gift is super strength, so a fighting type was a no-brainer, given that so many of them lean into being strong physical fighters

Bewear fits particularly well, though, because not only is Luisa incredibly strong, she’s also very feminine: having something pink and cute seems like a perfect match for a young woman that embraces her femininity as much as she does her raw power

Camilo - Ditto

Shapeshifting and perfect copies: there are only two pokemon that naturally learn transform, and the only other one is Mew (and I’m not doling out actual legendaries)

Though he does have chameleon imagery on his ruana, Kecleon is geared toward invisibility and ‘blending in’ rather than actual transformation

Zorua and Zoroark were also considered, but both of them rely on illusion rather than actual shapeshifting, so ultimately Ditto feels like the strongest fit

Mirabel - Audino

It’s all about the empathy: Audino uses those little feelers on its ears to understand how others are feeling, and Mirabel is able to reach out and understand the hidden insecurities and traumas of her family

Also, its ears look a bit like butterfly wings to me (particularly in its Mega-Evolved form)

The Audino is definitely a Gift Pokemon, but probably isn’t known to be one until the end: it showed up around the seemingly failed Gift Ceremony, but not from the door the way the others did, so no one made the connection

Her parents probably decided on their own to let Mirabel take it on as a partner in an attempt to cheer her up, given how hard that lost door must have hit her

Antonio - Liepard

We really need more big cat pokemon, Liepard is about as close to a jaguar as I can get

He undoubtedly has a ton of other pokemon hanging around like Toucannon, but given that the jaguar hangs with him through most of the movie after the Gift ceremony, Liepard seems like the best choice for a Gift pokemon

Felix - Oricorio

Not actually a Gift pokemon, just his buddy

Felix is a joy and so encouraging and upbeat, so coupled with the warm color palette for his clothes, the pom-pom variant seems like a perfect fit

Agustin - Buneary

Also not a Gift pokemon, just a buddy

Buneary having Klutz as an ability, coupled with how much of a punch those ears pack when they uncoil, does nothing to mitigate Agustin’s accident-prone nature

What do you like about the people around you?

My best friend Chelsea, some of you may remember her blog on here as ninthwardjawn (she has since deleted). We met on here seven years ago and she has been the longest and most consistent friendship I’ve ever had in my life. She is truly the sweetest and kindest girl I know. If Bubbles from the Power Puff Girls was a real person, it’d be her. She is my only friend who doesn’t drink or smoke but somehow finds a way to be the funnest and most lively person in the room. Her only vices are sweets. Every time I visit her house I complain about being cold because she keeps the AC on, and recently I noticed she bought a basket for her living room that she filled with blankets for me to warm up with. I could go on about her but that’s really my best friend my sister I will follow her to the end of the world. One of the things keeping me from leaving my town is that I know I can’t take her with me.

My other close close friend Ant is the most Libraest Libra ever. A true neutral spirit that I often need to balance out my impulse. We spend time with each other weekly and it’s always a great experience. We met in class and I knew he was going to be my friend the moment I heard him speak. I would say that 85% of the conversations we have should be recorded because working through our thoughts together is always funny, informative, and real. He is so knowledgeable in many ways that most people are not but he never boasts. He’s a true chameleon, I’ve seen him engage in a multitude of crowds and he always fits right in. I’m so thankful that I was blessed to love and know such a calm and balanced person.

My Miranda is someone I really just became close with within the last year as we were first colleagues and now we’re like 🤞🏽 and I love her. She’s a Leo so when we’re together we just encourage each other to make terrible decisions that are always so fun in the moment that it’s worth the consequences. She makes me feel seen in ways that a lot of people haven’t been able to. Her vulnerability is empowering to me. She’s really my safe place to be an absolute fool. Truly a chaotic good — I would give her the shirt off my back ‘cause I know she’d give me the shorts off her ass.

After Maria's sacrifice, Gaia conjured up their power and rose up mountains to keep the refugees of the attack safe, blessing the candle Shadow and Maria had on them for the miracle, and gifting Shadow three small children to raise that represented Maria's wish: One of emotion, one of kindness, and one of optimism.

The rest of the plot is self explanatory. Silver goes into hiding, Bernadette and Vanilla get married and have their own children, and Sonic is the only one without a gift.

Because he never needed one in the first place.

Sonic's gift is freedom... And with how Shadow ran the household, controlling everyone and maintaining a perfect image despite trying to be a good father, the miracle saw that Sonic didn't need a gift not because he didn't deserve it, but because he was the embodiment of freedom.

Giving him a gift would chain him down just like the rest of his family.

Ah. I think we may have a case of misunderstanding here. I am of the school of thought "Okay there's something going on with the Red Eyes" such that it is not by itself a semblance indicator. I blame Raven/Ozpin magic. It just pops up too often when Yang is angry but without any damage (ala Burning the Candle) and too separate in timing. See the final Adam fight where it's Red Eyes -> Gold Flash -> Semblance Active with Fire Hair reveal.

oh yeah i’m loosely familiar with the “yang’s eyes are a magic thing” body of theories, but i don’t really find any of the posts i’ve read convincing; a few reasons, in brief:

1 - every argument i’ve seen hinges on yang being the only character whose eyes change color + her eyes becoming red, like raven’s. the reasoning here goes that eyes changing color can’t be a semblance thing, because it only happens to yang, and red eyes must mean it’s connected to raven, and because raven has magic the missing link here must be that yang inherited some magic. the… obvious problem with that is that the only consistent, one hundred percent universal rule of semblances is that they are a unique expression of an individual’s nature. we buy that ruby’s semblance can disassemble ruby down to her molecular constituents (or give her wave-particle duality at a macroscopic scale if you like my quantum bullshit probability warper theory) but not that yang’s can make her eyes switch color? blake’s can make perfect illusory copies of her but yang’s semblance turning her eyes into a mood ring is the bridge too far? (we might as well argue that yang is secretly a chameleon faunus like ilia, because ilia’s eyes, skin, and hair all change color in response to her moods just like yang’s eyes do.)

2 - in more general terms, i think rwby uses magic in a very specific way that precludes the possibility of any character having any “by accident,” so to speak. this is really the central reason that ALL “is x semblance actually magic?” theorycrafting falls down for me—by treating magic purely as power (or worse, as power that makes the people who have it *special* in some undefined metaphysical way), the thematic role magic plays within the narrative itself is lost at best, ruined in most cases, and at worst ruined in a way that positions the gods as essentially *right* in their perception that beings with magical power are superior to those without.

3 - further, we’ve seen—courtesy of the lost fable—that one magically-activated parent is insufficient to produce offspring capable of magic; one out of four of the children ozma had with salem inherited the magical gift, and the other three may have, but the children ozma had in a subsequent life didn’t have magic but DID have silver eyes. this is suggestive of an indirect link between magical ancestry and silver eyes—although it might instead be related to ozma’s recurring oscillations through the white void—and also a strong point in favor of concluding that BOTH parents must have magic in order for their children to inherit the ability. (this tracks with the god-given nature of magical power and the divine disdain towards modern, unmagical humans expressed by the god of light.)

4 - the question of magic heritability also relies on salem and ozma as its data points—both of whom have the god-given blessing that allows them to use magic innately. that is *not* the case for any other magically-activated character in the show: the maidens and the branwen twins all have magical abilities derived from pieces of ozma’s magic that he gave to them, and in the case of the maidens at least it has been emphatically and repeatedly demonstrated that this magic does NOT “belong” to the maidens in the metaphysical sense that ozma’s magic belongs to him; ozma’s magic stays with him when he dies and follows him from one vessel to the next, whereas the maidens’ magic is attached to their auras and separates from them to find another host when they die. it’s likely that the branwen twins’ magic will behave in a similar way when they die, because it isn’t theirs. right? so regardless of whether magical heritability operates on metaphysical or genetic rules, it seems to me very unlikely that a maiden or one of the branwen twins could pass magical abilities onto a child, anymore than a parent could pass on a tattoo.

anyway—all mechanical quibbling aside—

as i see it, yang’s semblance is hard-wired to hyperarousal; i think it becomes active whenever she has an acute stress response, i.e. yang’s semblance is just Magical Fight-Or-Flight. and when i say “active” here what i mean is the part that makes her into a damage battery turns on. (we’ve seen with other damage-absorption semblances that they do require activation—the absorption isn’t an “always on” thing. nora can be hurt by electricity if she’s caught unawares, adam needs time to prepare himself before absorbing huge blasts of energy with his sword.) so basically, something happens, yang gets upset or scared or angry, her nervous system activates in response to “danger” (regardless of whether there is actual danger or not), and for yang one part of that activation is her aura preparing to absorb any incoming force.

after this point, there’s a second stage of activation which occurs at the conscious level, when yang acts—and this is where the variations in how and when and what order the visual signals occur comes into play, and also why i really strongly disagree with characterizing this secondary activation as equivalent to drawing a weapon.

like—yes, sometimes yang’s eyes flash red when she gets upset or angry during an argument. the acute stress response *happens* during arguments and other situations that cause strong emotional reactions—our brains just aren’t wired to differentiate between dangerous situations and situations that just make us upset, the physiological bugout kit gets brought out either way, and that’s why we sometimes snap or lash out in the heat of the moment or need to leave the room to calm down. in non-combat situations where yang’s eyes change, *that* is what’s happening: yang feels emotional pressure, she has this acute stress response, some trigger happens, she reacts without thinking—snaps something in a moment of anger like anyone would, totally normal. it just happens to be a quirk of her semblance that makes her eyes flash red when it happens.

importantly, it seems to me that this is how yang’s friends and family understand these moments. “yang’s eyes turn red in an argument” = “oh, yang is really upset.” we see this in 5.8, when weiss, ruby, and yang have that little spat about blake leaving; they’re not *scared* when yang’s eyes change, they don’t react like she suddenly flew off the handle and pointed her weapon at them—they’re startled, but the whole back-and-forth is about them realizing that yang is A LOT more upset about blake than they realized, and when she snaps at them and her eyes turn red they’re really concerned for her. yang, too, reacts very much like someone who just, in the heat of the moment, raised her voice in an argument without intending to—and then upon registering that she just shouted, she immediately backs down and walks away to cool down by herself. (and she did, in fact, shout; the red eyes are just a visual symbol that underscores the snapping, and the scene would have likely played out exactly the same even if her eyes hadn’t changed.)

on the other hand—in actual combat situations where yang is consciously using her semblance to her advantage—we see various sequences of red eyes + fiery hair to signal that. i think the different sequencing and varying drama of these kinds of activations are—well honestly mostly down to the pacing of the fight, but symbolically the less dramatic an activation is, the less intense yang’s perception of danger. just like there’s a difference between, you know, the “oh shit running late for work i’m gonna sprint from the bus stop” kind of adrenaline rush versus the “holy fuck my car rolled into the ditch and there’s shattered glass everywhere and i don’t actually remember making the decision to climb out the window at the speed of light and move a safe distance away from the wreck but i’m here now and seem to be in one piece WHEW” kind of adrenaline rush, you know? sometimes her semblance is this do-or-die thing where she’s throwing everything she has into one last stand against an opponent she can’t otherwise outmatch, and sometimes the fight is already basically over and she’s popping her semblance to give herself a nice clean and quick finish.

i’d highlight, also, the use of her semblance during the fight in the void—when she sees neo going for ruby and her semblance fully activates before she starts to move. because that emotion isn’t anger; it’s PANIC. pure, immediate terror because somebody’s going to stab her sister and she needs to get over there right now. there’s no real benefit to activating her semblance fully in that moment—she’s not soaked up enough damage at this point for it to be worth it—but because her semblance is so closely intertwined with her acute stress response and because one hundred percent of yang’s mind in that moment is focused on Get To Ruby Right The Fuck NOW, we see that full activation happen as she begins to move.

all of which ultimately makes for, i think, an excellent metaphor for how hyperarousal is an automatic, uncontrollable physiological reaction but people can choose what we *do* with it. like *waves hands* if i’m having a bad day and i just barely miss the bus am i going to feel that rush of adrenaline because my brain can’t tell the difference between this scenario and, like, a moose charging at me? yeah. is that going to make me feel snappish and irritable? yeah. am i going to bite someone’s head off for bumping into me in that moment? probably not—i might startle and snap “hey!!” because i’m already in a state of hyperarousal and something just collided with me, but then i’ll catch myself and in all likelihood just do the normal “hey sorry”/“nah you’re good just startled me” thing, because i’m a grown up capable of acting rationally even when my brain thinks a moose is trying to charge me or whatever. it’s the same deal with yang’s semblance; it’s hard-wired to that acute stress response and while she might snap or startle now and then in normal situations, with her eyes flashing red, she’s a rational and remarkably mature person who is perfectly capable of recognizing when that isn’t an appropriate response, and recognizing when she needs to just remove herself from the situation. we’ve seen her do exactly that, in fact. her ability and willingness to do that are some of the key things that set her apart from adam, who thinks and acts like even the smallest shred of unpleasant emotion that he feels is an excuse to do whatever the fuck he wants.

all of this is also why imo yang’s semblance can work brilliantly as both a metaphor for hyper vigilant crisis-mode *and* emotional resilience and crisis management, because Fundamentally yang’s semblance is a normal fight-or-flight stress response souped up with Magic Fantasy Bullshit, and the key to resilience and healing from hypervigilance is literally just figuring out new and better strategies for dealing with crises. yang experimenting with new ways of using her semblance is in a literal way just yang figuring out new strategies for how to handle her reaction to acute stress, literalized through the magic system in the same way that ren’s shift from emotional masking to emotion-sensing is a literalization of his developing emotional intelligence and comfort with his own feelings. yeah?

SIDEBAR. i think the reason yang’s eyes turn raven-red specifically is a way of symbolizing the emotional similarities between them; raven, also, is a character very much defined by her fight-or-flight response, hers is just very much tilted toward flight. yang, unlike raven, has achieved a kind of harmony with her acute stress response—she might slip up a bit and snap when she feels especially harried, but she’ll catch herself a second later and do what she needs to to calm herself down, and once she’s done so she’s willing and able to talk about the issue that upset her in the first place. her eyes might flicker to red for a moment, but they’ll never stay that way for long. and 9 times out of 10, if her eyes go red, it’s because she’s using her semblance in combat—consciously bringing out this part of herself in a context where it’s appropriate and constructive to do so, and then letting it go once she no longer needs it. raven, though? raven just runs and runs and runs, twisting from one rationalization to the next, totally ruled by her own fear, and her eyes are red all the time. (because that’s their natural color yes but we’re talking *symbolism* here, so what matters is the contrast with how red eyes are used to represent yang’s emotionality.) and this is, of course, the essence of yang’s confrontation with raven at the end of v5; she recognizes that she has this emotional maturity and control that her mom does not, and she’s able to articulate that with so much clarity and conviction that raven runs out of excuses, runs out of justifications, and has to concede that she’s right.

Event 001: All Hallows’ Eve Night Out

A Tale Told....

While Moira’s passing has shook the Midnight Underground to it’s very core and the people mourn (or at least pretend to), our supernatural friends would not miss such a momentous night. She would have wanted them to have fun, some people say.

My dearest puppet masters, I dare say it would be foolish to think that the creatures that go bump in the night would not be absolutely tickled pink at the very idea of a night dedicated completely to them. Debauchery runs rampant on The Strip these nights and those who may not normally be able to let their true selves out are at last free to run wild without fear of judgement. Vampires bite humans without fear of being burned at the stake, wizards unleash powerful potions into the night, and wolves are asked how they got their eyes to glow in the night.

It is an evening of depravity for all and while the passing of their Orator so soon to the Holiday is a tragedy, it does not mean they cannot enjoy themselves

While running amuck against the mundane is not a requirement for the evening and is, still, frowned upon by the higher ups in the Midnight Underground, there is still much to be do and excitement to be had! Each circle is having their own party this night, with various tricks (and treats) to behold. Please remember that costumes, or a visage of your own that appears enough like a costume to not attract attention from the Unaware, are required. 

While, officially, potential candidates for each circle have not been declared, there are certain parties to be privy too. You will see them in positions of power throughout your evening. Perhaps this is your chance to get to know them before they step forward and into the political night.

There are private party signs hung up at each establishment below and you, my little doves, have the golden ticket.

Chameleon Club will be hosting a costume contest with the winner to receive, well, a special prize they aren’t quite too keen on revealing yet. You know how those faeries can be after all. Hollis Fiala, the heir to the Fae High Court Throne, will be judging so you had better bring your best looks. Still, they assure me and our dear Guide that the reward will help you greatly in dealing away with any lingering promises you may have lurking in your closet.

Pete’s Diner, ever the beacon of normalcy in the midst of a sea of strange, is having a simple Halloween fair. They encourage you to bring your family for festivities. There will be bobbing for apples, a quaint little pumpkin patch, and a pumpkin carving contest hosted by Damien Harker, a local business man as far as the Unaware know, who has donated a fair bit to this wonderful night. He’s offering the cash prize for the evening and perhaps a bit more if you know the right words.

The Carmilla is not usually the host of such events, as the Filthy Fenrir has the feelings of less pomp and circumstances on nights such as this, but for some reason the Speakeasy claims they’ll be far too busy with preparations for something. Karlha Whitlock, a wolf on the rise to power, has challenged all party goers to make a drink using her three favorite ingredients: vodka, grenadine, and some sort of citrus fruit. Winner will have their cocktail become part of the menu under the name: Hair of the Dog, and the vampires promise aid should things get, well, hairy in the future.

La Fortuna will be carrying in it’s yearly tradition with a grand poker tournament that all of the Midnight Underground are invited to attend. And this years prize? A chip blessed by Thaddeus James himself with a promise to see one future event with perfect clarity. No one quite knows why Thaddeus seems to be the front runner for the Power, but you have always heard just how vibrant his visions are.

Implications for the game.....

As I’m sure you’ve managed to put together, this event is particularly interactive. The guide and I ask you of a few things. We give you full permission to visit any and all of these wonderful events occurring around the Midnight Underground and you may participate in any or all of the events!

We will ask that you tell us which event(s) you wish to participate in. Each group will be placed in different channels and asked to roll a dice. Whoever has the highest roll will be given the respective prize. Should you win one game, fantastic, but you cannot win any more than that. However if you’ve signed up for multiple and you fail to win the first, you may keep going!

AND WITH THAT, THE DASH IS OPEN FOR INTERACTIONS!

Where the breeze leads us

Chapter 4: Legacy

Author’s notes: this is a series of tiny one-shots taking place in the Sonic future AU described in my fic How You Look In The Wind.  You might want to read a bit of it first! There might not be a strict chronology to these events, so some of them are up to interpretation. Enjoy the read!

It really was amazing in its own way, Espio thought. Despite being one of the most famous investigation agencies on Mobius, the Chaotix were permanently on the verge of being broke.

Granted, it wasn’t that bad. They lived in a nice house with everything they needed, and never really had to cut budget on food or basic necessities. But most mobians expected the team to be extremely successful and loaded with money.

First, every other case was offered at an absurdly low rate. The crocodile simply couldn’t resist to the idea of helping people, no matter the size of their bank account.

Second, the Chaotix had become a well know name among charities. There had always been a widespread need for relief on Mobius, due to the destruction caused by Ivo Robotnik and his clique. Fortunately most mobians were generous and valued solidarity, but the agency always found many fundraisers to participate in.

Espio didn’t mind for the most part. But this was a special occasion, for Chaos’ sake.

“Aren’t we supposed to have like, savings?” Charmy asked cautiously, looking up from the plants he was watering. “Yes, but the key words here are supposed to.” the chameleon replied with a glare towards Vector. “Why I still let you handle the budget is beyond my understanding. – C’m’on, it’s usually not bad!” the large mobian said. “I just forgot ya needed this much for today.”

Espio sighed and closed the laptop. The costume was already being made, so there was no choice but to pay one way or another. If the tailor could accept to delay the payment by a month, it would be feasible, but…

“Why don’t you borrow from someone?” the bee offered. “I’m pretty sure Amy or Rouge would understand, and they’re— – Absolutely not. – You’re dumb.” Charmy shrugged. “They’re friends, they would be happy to help with this and you know it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime situation.”

With a pained expression, the purple reptile got up and rubbed his temples, not sharing a word for a whole minute. Vector eyed Charmy, slightly perplexed.

“Alright. Yes. I guess you’re right.” Espio then turned towards his associate. ”Vec, I expect you to handle our finances better next month. It’s one thing to have a debt with the tailor, it’s another to fail to honour one with a friend.”

Vector nodded almost ashamedly as the chameleon grabbed his phone and went outside.

A surprising amount of people was gathered at the ceremony. Espio had expected most of them to show up, like Sonic and Tails, who were among Knuckles’ oldest friends. Some others were… an interesting surprise. Everyone knew Scourge was in some kind of rehabilitation retreat with Mighty and followed him everywhere, but to see him attend this important event felt odd to say the least.

As he was observing the armadillo and his green apprentice, a not-so-discreet gesture of affection made the Espio raise a brow.

Huh. So these two are… Shaking his head, the chameleon tried to focus. The sun was just about to set, and he had an important role to play.

The chatter from the small crowd circling the altar faded as the daylight shifted to coral and fiery rose. A dingo and a jaguar started playing instruments, a grave yet somehow uplifting melody slowly filling the air. All stares focused on the Emerald altar, on which two figures took place.

One was Knuckles, wearing a gold and white robe intricately decorated with a snake motif. The current guardian, with his solemn pose and ceremonial outfit, almost seemed like another person altogether. His expression, showing an unreadable seriousness to most, was in fact tinted by pride and emotion.

Espio tried —and failed— to avoid glancing too much at the echidna. The sunset light worked together with the elegant flowing costume, highlighting his fiery red spikes in a way that left the chameleon slightly dazzled.

The second person was a young wombat, her face slightly hidden by a humble cloak. Her stare was one Espio had seen many times from Cream or Charmy: slightly intimidated yet resolute. Eyes blessed with the spark of youthful optimism and the willpower needed to change the world for the better.

The chameleon smiled as the music stopped. Knuckles’ successor was fit for the task.

“The sun descends and stars appear in our skies, as old as the stones our feet step on. They remember this world and so do we.” the red echidna started. “Tonight our hearts are bright and will sing a new song, so that the Chaos may listen and make our will known.”

Espio exchanged the slightest look with his partner, a glimpse of a supporting smile escaping onto his lips. Knuckles nodded imperceptibly before continuing his speech.

The ceremony was solemn, and the crowd attending it kept silent all along. It was, after all, the beginning of an end. Everyone witnessing it was acknowledging the approaching end of the echidna clan, its last member having decided to pass his knowledge to an apprentice.

Time came for the last part of the ritual, and Espio stepped closer. He knelt in front of the young wombat, who bowed down respectfully. “We are now into the night of your duties, Helik the Wombat.” Knuckles said, his voice now trembling slightly with emotion he was unable to hide. “Find knowledge and wisdom as the stars travel along you, so you may emerge from the horizon with newfound brilliance.”

He then turned towards his purple friend. “If I ever fail our duties, or if fate separates us, I entrust my power to Espio the Chameleon. He is now a beacon in the dark, one you shall seek in the hardest of times and trust whenever you feel lost.”

Uncovering a chaos emerald from his outfit, the echidna set it on a small stone pedestal between them. Helik, Espio and Knuckles all placed a hand on it and closed their eyes.

For a few seconds they remained silent. Then, as the Master Emerald behind them started to glow more and more, they chanted together: “The servers are the 7 Chaos. Chaos is power... Power enriched by the heart. The controllers are the ones that unify the Chaos.”

A gentle wave of energy came out of the emerald beneath their hands, echoing one from the Master Emerald. Everyone present felt their hearts filled with courage and hope, dreams of a distant past and longing for a bright future.

Helik would be the next Guardian.

With a relieved sigh, Espio looked at the crowd cheering for the trio and smiled. Knuckles’ hand was warm against his own.
