Pay per game

Many NBA cheering squads are composed of volunteers, but those who do get paid typically receive about $50 to $100 per game, according to a 2010 report by Christian Science Monitor. NBA teams have 41 home games per season, according to ESPN.com, so with some simple math that works out to between $2,050 and $4,100 per dancer. How much a dancer makes depends largely on the prestige of the NBA team. According to a 2000 report by Sports Illustrated, the New York Knicks City Dancers make about $150 per game and the Brooklyn Nets Power N’ Motion dancers earn $120; both are relatively high-profile teams, especially compared to Portland's BlazerDancers, who earn only minimum wage. Team prestige doesn’t always mean more money though – the Los Angeles Lakers' Laker Girls earn only $85 a game.

Time Commitment

Despite the relatively low pay, cheering for an NBA team requires an extensive time commitment. In addition to cheering at home games, many squads require dancers to show up several hours before each game to practice and prepare. Most dancers are also expected to attend mandatory rehearsal multiple times a week, according to the Christian Science Monitor report. These rehearsals are often unpaid. Dancers can also be required to attend charity events and camps, also often without pay.

Extra Income

Many NBA dancers make their living in appearance fees at parties, public relations events and the like, according to Sports Illustrated. Unlike per-game pay, appearance fees are typically pretty hefty. For example, the Philadelphias 76ers Dance Team members earn just $65 per game but charge as much as $150 an hour in appearance fees. Indiana Pacers' Pacemates earn up to $60 per hour for appearances, while the BlazerDancers rake in $50 per hour, according to Sports Illustrated. Many dancers also have side jobs as models, cheer coaches, professional dancers or actresses.

Fringe Benefits

In addition to a free guest ticket and free parking for games, NBA cheerleaders reap some other benefits from the job as well. No, we’re not talking dental and medical coverage, but their travel expenses are typically covered and they are often provided with a free personal trainer. The high-profile exposure can also be helpful for those trying to break into the entertainment industry. Paula Abdul, Teri Hatcher, Eve Torres and Jill Marie Jones are among celebrities whose start as professional cheerleaders.

I've danced my entire life (since 3 yrs old) and I definitly have the talent & ability. The reason I didn't make it? The coach at the time told me "fans didnt like feeling like they were oogling a little girl". Basically saying my dancing was on point but my body was not womanly enough. 8 years later my body is the same, skinny and fit, and I feel just as womanly now as I did than. 🤷🏼‍♀️ That's what I love about cosplay, I can be the characters and regardless of my body I am confident of the characters I portray #cosplayisforeveryone. The moral is it didn't stop me, and nothing should stop you. I danced in a performing company as one of the star dancers following this for a few years, and still have many frontiers to conquer!!! • • 📺P.S. (Fun Fact) If you are local the the PNW I was on the Comcast reality TV show, "Making the BlazerDancers". I even had 2 spotlights on the show; getting heat exhaustion being the "drama" wheeled off on a stretcher into an ambulance, and knowing my Blazer trivia correctly!! (Championship in '78? FALSE!!
