Every time I see another beautiful stack of #blackwriters books, I’m reminded of this past December. @tomiadeyemi and @nicstone were in conversation at @agnesscottcollege and Tomi and Nic discussed the beautiful covers of Adeyemi’s novels. Adeyemi talked about how there were no covers like #childrenofbloodandbone when she was growing up; utter and sheer lack of representation in literature. No Black writers and no Black main characters. And my privilege smacked me right in the face and gut. Because I never had to worry or even THINK about representation in books. Although red heads aren’t a publishing favorite, all main characters...all heroes and ladies in distress...looked. Like. Me. So, gazing at these intricate and lovely covers, and recalling Adeyemi thinking out loud about the progression of cover art from book one to book two, she was hopeful about the progress Black book covers would have in the future. And I know it’s not enough. It’ll never be enough. But man, oh man, of you LOOK at these covers?! 10 years ago, these stories weren’t possible in the publishing world. Yet through tireless efforts of incredible writers, these stories, these Black stories are EVERYTHING. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Buy Black books. Read #blackwriters . And not just while it is en vogue. Read them always. #readabook #englishteacher #weneeddiversebooks #blackvoices #blackstoriesmatter #blm #blackoutpublishingpower #secondaryela #bookstagram #iteachtoo #iteachhighschool #blackoutbestsellerlist https://www.instagram.com/p/CBnq8LOBZ7R/?igshid=1r0m4yr6vqahk

Are you participating in #blackoutpublishingpower this week? My husband picked these two books for his choices this week. White Rage and One Person, No Vote by Dr. Carol Anderson. I bought my daughter The Fresh Princess: Style Rules by @mybrownbaby and my son got Cool Cuts by @mechalroe !! For my littlest dude, I ordered Antiracist Baby by @ibramxk !! It was so easy to find books for the kids and my husband aced it but I am having trouble for myself lol. I have one book picked, Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Dr. Angela Davis. My second pick is alluding me so I am asking for recommendations. I have been reading a lot of heavy books and I want a little escape. Please recommend anything fantasy, sci-fi, or drama filled lol. Nothing to dark, I am a big ole scaredy cat with certain imagery (real or imaged in my head...I got scared watching Vampire in Brooklyn 🙈🤣🤣) Anyhow, if you know of any good picks by #blackauthors help me out! #bookreview for ♠️A Blade So Black ♠️ 🖤♥️♣️♦️♠️♥️♣️♦️♠️🤍🖤I’m a high school English teacher, and I live and work in a community that is approximately 68% Latinx, 20% Black, 8% white, 4% Asian/Mixed. So let that be the preface for my review of A Blade So Black and my assertion that this book is REQUIRED READING. ♥️An urban fantasy BIPOC Alice in Wonderland retelling is VITAL for a multitude of reasons. The first being that hopefully it is abundantly clear that children and teens and even adults reading YA need to see themselves represented in literature. ♠️Additionally, it’s important that the BIPOC characters be MAIN characters. Not token characters, or sassy-best-friend-sidekick characters. Those are great. But ultimately limiting. ♦️While the first 100 pages *feel* (they’re not, actually) slow pace-wise, the character and world building is absolutely necessary, especially if this book is your introduction to the Alice In Wonderland canon. ♣️After pg 100, the pace is break-neck and the plot is full-tilt action. Alice is a fully formed heroine with tragedy at her back. She’s complicated and her dialogue is so rich and authentic I had a hard time forgetting that she’s not really one of my students! 🤍 I loved seeing Wonderland and Atlanta through her eyes, and cannot wait to read the next two books in the series. 🖤 Hatta is maddeningly wonderful and awful simultaneously. Maddie is precious and needs to be protected. Court, I can’t figure out, and that’s okay. Chess. Oh, Chess. Black Knight?? Hooooooo boy! THAT plot line just gets curiouser and curiouser. #blacklivesmatter #blackoutpublishingpower #amplifymelanatedvoices #bipoc #readabook #englishteacher #secondaryela #iteachtoo #iteachhighschool #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #teachergram #llmckinney (at Gainesville, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCrqnmeh-OA/?igshid=1uh97tvp739e3
