nic’s muses if they were... human.

will owens lives with his mother in a farm off the interstate. he doesn’t know who his real mother is, she left him on the porch when he was only a few months old. he doesn’t like to think about those times. he doesn’t like to imagine that yes, he’s nothing to someone. as a kid he spent his time sticking flowers in his hair, and making shadow puppets on the sheets that were hanging from the close line. nowadays, he’s selling his crops at the farmer’s market, trying to get buyer’s to stop harassing him, getting his GED--. and at the same time watching the only woman who ever cared about him waste away. yes, it’s hard, but he can never imagine a life better than this one.

mahu attah has a habit of being on gossip sites. kissing strangers, wearing everything see through. she loves the lights because it means someone can see her. it’s not her father who made a damn good movie once, but won’t let it die. and a mother that’s way too medicated to even notice what’s happening to her ever. mahu doesn’t care about that, or either of them. she wants to live until the lights go out and the people disappear. it feels good to be ‘#blackirlmagic’ and sitting front row seats of fashion shows. it’s exhilarating. almost as exhilarating as traveling the world.

jedidiah boyake is a black man with a smile, he is a rarity. he’s trying to make payments on time and trying to make it to work too. but it’s never all that bad especially when it’s Sunday and everyone has to come back home to the two bedroom apartment that they can barely fit into and they can just eat and be happy. asking JD when he’s going to apply to SCAD, asking JD why he enjoys his dead end job, asking JD when will he get married because you won’t stay young forever. he doesn’t have an answer and he doesn’t care either. he likes commissioning his drawings online for a couple of bucks and use that same money to buy supplies. he is alive and he is free.

amber wilson is trying to exist in a world where sensory overload is a daily thing, and anxiety is just a part of who she is now. her mother says it’s worry. that girls like her will be fie if they just pray. there’s nothing that God can’t fix, medicine will only make you sick. but she already feels sick when she’s sitting in the pews and asking God to forgive her. she’s not right, and she knows this because they tell her that people aren’t right when they are like her. she can’t tell anyone. she just has to hug herself really tight.

adam has a last name. and a office job. and has repetition that would kill any man. he does this o keep him focused away from it all. from the wife. ex wife. alimony. parents. he is ultimately tired and thinks that maybe he’ll feel some peace if he just runs himself into the ground. sometimes he gets moments where he is alone and he thinks that maybe this isn’t okay, that if he doesn’t stop he’ll just break down. but it’s just this and it always will be.

thoth owns birds, or better yet, is the father of birds. he spends his days reading words that aren’t english, playing his guitar as he walks with bare feet, and coming to the rescue of his siblings because existing without him is not a real thing. they are blood he keeps thinking to himself. they have to have him. but he knows something inside him just wants to push them all away so he can just live his own life. honestly, if they just picked up one of his self help books they’ll be alright, but they can never be entertained by the writer.
