Blackstar Coffee Co Chapter 3: Not So Smooth
A/N: Honestly please let me know if chapter length bothers you. I like short chapters because when I am reading books I like short chapters because of the sense of accomplishment. Also when I am writing, I update more often if they are shorter because it is less of a commitment. Also, let me know how you like my version of James. I’m gonna change him a little because tbh I’m not his biggest fan. (As I was naming this chapter I realized I should have all named them different sorts of coffee and I am disappointed with myself for not thinking of that sooner.) And on my kick of a little push on treating barista’s better. Be like James.
Tag list: @thelaziestgeek @lilyofthelion @prongsmischief @padsmcfoot @blacklilyqueen @jily-swan-hinny1 (I hope that’s everyone!) Thank you all so much for the support, seriously it means so much. And if you want to be tagged in any upcoming chapters just let me know!
And as one last side note, I’ve been talking to @hufflepuffmarlenemckinnon and if you all want more great Blackinnon content, follow her! And another great blog for Blackinnon, Marauder, or Sirius Black content is @padsmcfoot plus she is only *1* away from her next hundred so let’s make sure she wakes up with that milestone!!

Of course, Marlene did nothing with the card or the number. She had considered ripping it up. She had wished she did it in front of him, but something kept her from doing so. Instead she stored it in her back pocket and didn’t touch it again. As attractive as he was, she still wasn’t impressed with how rude or assuming he was and would sooner give up her minimum wage job before date some young privileged boy who was playing weird games with her.
However, this time it was less than a day until she saw him again. She was standing at the till, near the end of her shift when a gentlemanly looking male, probably around her age walked in and very politely ordered himself a mocha. She smiled and wrote his name, James, on the cup while her coworker got started on the drink. “Is that drink really sweet?” He asked Marlene curiously.
The blonde chuckled, “Have you never had a mocha before?”
“No, it’s what one of my friends always gets, but he loves chocolate and anything else sweet so I just realized...”
“It’s pretty sweet,” she confirmed, “Did you want us to make you something else instead?”
“Nah, don’t worry about it, you’ve already started,” James nodded his head to the girl who was half finished his drink unsure if she should go on since he seemed on the fence about the whole thing.
“Are you sure, it’s not trouble,” Marlene replied, as she was trained to always make the customer feel at ease even when it really inconvenienced the rest of the team.
But there was an interruption before James could take her up on her generosity, “Wow, Marlene McKinnon providing good customer service, are you sick Marls?”
Marlene rolled her eyes at Lily’s voice, but didn’t say anything since her gaze locked onto the young man. His entire face dropped when he saw Lily standing at the till, it was as if he had never seen a woman before at all. His jaw literally stood ajar and he dropped his wallet, money falling everywhere. But even then he was too transfixed on the redhead to notice.
“Uhm, sir?” Lily waved her hand in front of his face.
Snapping back, James cleared his throat and looked at the floor around him, coins were still rolling around. He made a quick movement to put his wallet down and start collecting his mess, but just as he tried putting his wallet on the ledge, the barista put his hot coffee down, their hands collided and the steamed milk and espresso spilled all down the young man. “Shit,” James said under his breath, shaking his hand.
Marlene grimaced and quickly ran to the back to get a cool cloth and some burn cream for James while Lily helped him get some napkins and clean himself off. “You alright?”
“I, er, yeah, I, er, you are very beautiful-” He stumbled over his words, shook his head and got down on his hands and knees to start collecting his coins.
“Thanks,” Lily smiled kindly, tucking her hair behind her ear.
The door chimed open again and another person was added to the mix. His dark eyebrows raised drawing attention to his cool grey eyes. “What on Earth has happened here now? Every time I walk into this location it’s another mess!”
“Sirius, hi,” James stood up, finally peeling his eyes away from the new love of his life. “This was literally all my fault, I just got a little...”
“He lost his balance,” Lily covered for him, sneaking another look at the boy as his hand went up to ruffle up his hair for some odd reason. “Marlene’s just in the back grabbing some burn cream I would assume for his hand.”
“Really is my fault,” James apologized, “These two baristas have been lovely.”
Marlene finally returned, a mop in one hand and some cream and cloth in another. Lily took it to help out James while Marlene began mopping up the spilled drink. While James apologized profusely, Sirius let out a dark laugh. “I didn’t know this particular barista knew how to be ‘lovely’ honestly I don’t even know how she got hired.”
His voice did not sound threatening in the least, more playful, but still Marlene’s eyes cautiously looked up to Sirius and she forced a thin smile across her lips. “Good to see you’re back. I’ll get you your tall coffee so you can leave.”
“No need, I was just meeting my friend here,” he put an arm around a still very awkward James who was just starring with complete admiration as Lily applied the cream to his hand and wrapped a bandage gently around it.
“He also needs a new coffee since he decided to bless our floors with overpriced espresso and chocolate sauce,” Marlene retorted. Lily turned to glare at Marlene, shocked she was being so careless at this point.
“Right well, we can get one elsewhere, honestly the coffee here isn’t even that good. My family just likes to save every penny they can, even at the price of serving poor quality beans and acting like they are a privilege just to taste. Later blondie, don’t forget to use my number if you need anything!” Sirius quite literally dragged James towards the door while he kept looking back at Lily. As they got to the door however, Sirius rolled his eyes. “Or pass my number onto Little Red over there. I’ve been staying with James the past week so, he’ll be there, with me.”
As if it saved James any grace by this point, he stood up straight, his hand ran effortlessly through his hair and he winked to Lily. “Call me.”
The two boys finally left and Marlene and Lily looked at one another quickly bursting int hysterical laughter. “What even- what just- what was that?!” Marlene asked to Lily, thinking about how many times that James kid made a fool of himself.
Somehow Lily found it charming and her laughter came more from the awkwardness she felt for him combined with the butterflies she got as he winked goodbye to her. Once her laughter calmed down Lily’s smile did not fade, “He’s cute though.”
“And polite,” Marlene agreed.
“And he had a nice butt.”
“But,” Marlene interrupted, “I’m weary of who he chooses to keep as a friend.”
“He hasn’t fired you yet, that’s a good sign!”
The blonde huffed, “He hasn’t fired me yet because he tried asking me out yesterday!”
Lily’s mouth fell open. “He what?”
With an annoyed sigh, she reached into her back pocket. (Marlene had a horrible habit of wearing the same exact pair of black jeans to literally every shift while very rarely washing them.) And she pulled out his card, handing it to Lily. “He told me he’d give me a good tip if I smiled then gave me his number instead.”
“Disgusting...” Lily replied, her whole face scrunched up. “If that’s the case, you really don’t need this then?” She added in, slowly taking the card.
“Call them, get that black haired disaster of a boy to take you out on a date. And bring protection!”
“Marlene!”
“I meant a helmet, maybe some knee pads, definitely leather gloves. Seriously, imagine dinner with him! He will have knives to drop, wine, a full three-course meal, be prepared!” Marlene teased while Lily looked down at the number and programmed it into her phone.

Blackstar Coffee Co Chapter 2:  A Tip
A/N: I cannot believe the amount of kind comments and excitement I got over my first chapter. So here it is, chapter two. Is it going to be a slow burn? Maybe. Do I have the patience for it? Probably not but we will see. I am excited to introduce James in the next chapter. And eventually have some Jily on the sidelines. And for any of you who like long chapters, I’m sorry but I like them short.
And even more importantly, again all based off my experience as a barista. You two working a 1-9 only to work a 5-12 the next morning and not be grumpy. Thank your baristas. Give them tips, be kind to them.
Tag list: @thelaziestgeek @marlenemarauders @prongsmischief @padsmcfoot @jily-swan-hinny1 (If you wish to be added just let me know. Also technically only the first one here asked the rest I just read your comments and appreciated them. I won’t tag you next time unless you want me to, because I don’t want to annoy you.)
Tumblr media
Marlene was honestly shocked that she did not receive a phone call the following day requesting for her not to go into work. Her and Lily were sitting at home watching movies together until it was time for her shift to start. Assuming she no longer had a job, Marlene did not bother getting ready for work at all. Lily had a week off before she started her new paid internship with a marketing company and so the friends decided to take a day to themselves before Marlene started looking for new jobs again. She had a quick temper but she was charming enough when she needed to be that it was never too hard for her to find work. (Once again Lily suggested Marlene try to find something more fulfilling to do with her life, but Marlene brushed her off, claiming to be too young to think so seriously.)
1:00 hit and Marlene’s cell phone went off. She recognized the number of her store and she rolled her eyes, made a face to Lily and answered it.
“Where are you?” Her supervisors voice rang out. “Your shift started right now and we have breaks to run!”
Marlene’s eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“What do I mean?! Marlene McKinnon get your ass to work, no excuses.”
“But- you actually want me there?” The blonde tilted her head and shrugged when Lily mouthed something to her.
There was no humour in her supervisors voice. “What’s that suppose to mean? I swear to God Marlene, you shift stared at 1:00. And this phone call has wasted two minutes. If you’re not here in the next ten, then you have no job to come back to!”
Both girls starred dumbfounded at the phone once the line cut off for thirty seconds. Then Lily suddenly yanked the blanket off of Marlene, “Get up, go! It takes fifteen to get there so you better make a miracle happen, Mar!”
Marlene stumbled off the couch, ran into her room and found the first black t-shirt and pants she could find on the floor. She pulled them over her pyjama shorts and ran out. “Bring my my stuff later!” The girl demanded of Lily as the door swung shut behind her.
Without a bra on, she held onto her chest as she ran record speed down the street. She got to Blackstar Coffee with one minute to spare, took a pen, spun her hair around it so it was up and out of the way, before throwing an apron around her neck and stepping behind the bar. Her chest heaving she smiled broadly at her supervisor. “Made it.”
“Twelve minutes late. That’s still a write-up Marlene. Don’t be late again.”
Still trying to catch her breath, the girl nodded and washed her hands before starting on a coffee order ahead of her.
The rest of the day slowly improved. Lily dropped off a bag for her that had her keys, something to eat, her purse cell phone and even a bra. They chatted for a few minutes and Marlene thanked her about a hundred times while the supervisor asked why Lily couldn’t stay with them and Marlene quit instead. Marlene laughed dryly at her joke and the supervisor let her for on a fifteen minute break so she change properly. Catching her reflection in the mirror, Marlene saw that she really was a complete mess. She took her clothes off so she could finally take off her pyjama shorts and put on the proper bra and underwear Lily brought her. Being able to take a few minutes to get redressed, run her fingers through her hair and pull it back into a much tidier ponytail, the blonde felt better and managed to return to the floor presentable and in a significantly improved mood.
You forgot my eyeliner! Marlene texted Lily once the supervisor made her exit for the day.
You’re welcome for saving your ass at all, ungrateful twat. Don’t get fired!
Marlene laughed and tucked her phone into her back pocket, deciding to focus on her job and the customers so she wouldn’t let Lily down. The entire shift passed with Marlene wondering why she didn’t get in trouble though. She almost felt like she was waiting for something to happen but nothing did and it was as if the night prior was just a dream.
The following day she got to work on time. She worked her shift for a full 8 hours without being rude to a single customer and had never been more proud of herself. It was the day after that when she was scheduled for an opening shift that Marlene got back to her grumpy self. It was 5:00am when her shift began. At 5:30 the doors opened and she shuffled to the till. It was too early for her to bother with makeup, brushing her hair or even keeping her eyes open. “What the hell sort of torture is this hour of the day anyway?” She blandly asked her coworker.
“Welcome to mornings, Marlene. They’re not that bad. Mind if I pop in the back to organize the milk fridges?”
“You want to do more work? You should get your brain checked.” Marlene retorted but the girl was already around the corner on her way to do whatever tasks she decided on. The grouchy blonde leaned her head against the till, dishevelled hair in her face and she could have fallen asleep right there.
“Ahem.” A voice interrupted her attempted nap.
Her head snapped up. “Hi, coffee. You want?” She rubbed her eyes and when her hand came down standing in front of her was the easily recognizable attractive but overconfident Sirius Black. Her posture straightened and she attempted a smile. “Welcome to Blackstar Coffee Mr Black, what can I get you today?”
“Drop the act, you were cuter falling asleep at the till.”
She groaned, “Can you just fire me already, Black? I fucked up and I want to go home.”
“Fire you? Why would I do that? I’m not your manager.”
Marlene’s face fell, “Don’t act all modest, you could and you were going to. Or do you like torturing innocent girls?”
He had the audacity to laugh at her. “No offence but you don’t strike me as the innocent type. I just wanted a coffee today, can you do that without yelling this time?”
“No.” She replied argumentatively.
“I’ll tip you?”
“Then maybe.” Spinning around, she went to grab the coffee. Her eyes looked between the medium and dark roast and her head hung, “Can I chose for you, so you don’t piss me off again?”
“Only if you smile.”
She wanted to gag. But instead she poured his coffee and turned, the fakest smile she could muster on her lips. “Goodbye Mr Black.”
“Actually I prefer Sirius.”
“And I prefer sleep, but your family likes to pay us minimum wage to be up first thing in the morning. Where’s my tip?”
A cocky grin took over Sirius’ features. He grabbed a pen from behind the counter and took a card out of his pocket. He scribbled something on it and handed it to her. “Just for you.” And turned to leave. Marlene looked down and scoffed at his little joke. It was his business card, but handwritten on the back was a phone number. What sort of game was he playing at anyway?

Blackinnon Coffee Co Chapter 4: Cinnamon Buns
A/N: I am sooo happy to be writing the next chapter finally. I’m sorry I abandoned ship for a while there. I am the actual worst for finishing things I start.

Marlene couldn’t help rolling her eyes over the next few days at every time Lily’s phone lit up. The young redhead would grin as she slid the text messages open and was often humming to herself. Yet whenever Marlene asked her, she had a variety of answers as to why she was in such a good mood.
“It was raining for days, and the sun is out today!”
“Breakfast this morning was just so good.”
“We made so many tips today!”
Not one of them did Marlene buy. She had given the number straight to Lily who took her time calling the boy. From what Marlene understood, Lily had talked to Sirius Black for no longer than a second before the Potter boy stole the phone and made another embarrassment of himself, yet again. For some reason Lily fell for it though, James took note of her number and promised to text her right away. He was having trouble finding the time to take Lily out on a date, with her school and work taking so much of her time. So they had resorted to texting until Lily had a break in her schedule. Clearly it was already going very well. Today, Lily was sitting in the back room, texting furiously as if to get every possible second out of her fifteen minute break. Marlene stepped into the back to look at the schedule and noticed the next day Lily worked before class, but Marlene had no shift. She sighed, “Hey Lils, mind if I take your shift tomorrow?”
Lily tilted her head, astonishment dashed across her face, “Are you volunteering to work extra?!”
“If it’ll give you time to go get breakfast with this awkward mess of a boy, then yes.”
Lily smiled as she stood back up, retying her apron and hugging her friend closely. “Thank you Marls. I’ll make it up to you!”
“Can you make it up by doing the floors tonight?” Conveniently, Lily found a customer to help so she did not have time to answer Marlene. Marlene grumbled as she assembled the mop bucket to start cleaning up a day of messy footprints and careless customers. Lily was in an even better mood than before though and Marlene had to admit, she did love seeing her best friend loosen up a little, she tended to forget to relax and get a little too worked up in her studies from time to time.
The next morning came, and Lily had woken up Marlene hours earlier than necessary. Marlene whined the entire time, trying to figure out why it mattered which floral printed dress she wore. Or if she wore her hair in a ponytail or down. And which size of earrings she wore. “Lil, he was drooling over you in a green apron and espresso covered pants. Besides, you’re already pretty, can’t I sleep?!”
But Lily did not seem to hear, or care about Marlene’s abundance of complains. “Okay, what if I wear my hair in like a loose pony?”
“LILY EVANS.” Marlene shouted at last. “Who are you? Getting all dressed up for a boy, is he really that special?!”
Lily chewed her lip. She barely knew the boy, she couldn’t explain to Marlene what the butterflies were all about. But she wished she could. Really she could not figure it out even for herself. “There’s just something about him... I can tell.”
“What is he texting you that’s making you go all lovey-dovey gaga over him?!”
“Nothing really,” Lily answered honestly. He was trying way too hard, but she could sense the sincerity behind it all. Marlene would just laugh if she saw the messages though. It was every day things. How are you? I hope you had a good day! I bet you look beautiful! Have a good night, Evans. Nothing special but somehow it had Lily falling faster than she ever thought to be possible. She shook it all away, to make eye contact with Marlene again. “Just, tell me how I look?”
“Gorgeous and casual, as you always do.” Marlene replied back, rubbing her eyes. “Now I have to get ready for work, don’t miss your class for this kid, alright!”
Lily hit her friend playfully across the arm before grabbing her purse and leaving. Marlene groaned and fell back on Lily’s bed, wishing she could just sleep. Her phone rang and she clumsily reached for it and brought it to her ear. “I swear to God Lily-”
“Your friend getting as excited about their little date as mine is?” Sirius’ voice replied with amusement. “James has been waiting for an hour. Showed up way too early. Calls me every four minutes scared she’s going to stand him up.”
“So you called me to find out? She’s your employee, look at her perfect attendance.”
“Not quite.” Marlene could hear the smirk in his voice and did not like it. She rubbed her eyes again.
“I have to get ready for work- bye.”
Sirius replied cooly, “No you don’t.”
“Yes... I do.”
“I got your shift covered.” Marlene’s eyes finally opened as she mouthed a few curses to the ceiling. “Why? Why would you do that Mr Black?!”
“Just Sirius, please.”
“No what’s serious, is you interfering in my life.”
He chuckled appreciatively at her pun of his name. “Your groggy voice tells me you weren’t up for work anyway. Why don’t we surprise our friends, a little double date to alleviate the awkwardness.”
“No.”
“Fine, a singles date.”
“Still no.”
“Well you don’t work, and I’m outside your place with some cinnamon buns from a coffee shop much better than mine.”
“And now you’re stalking me... Do you not see the problem here?!”
His voices paused for only a second, “Come on, let me apologize to you over a coffee.”
“How spoiled are you? Have you ever heard a no in your life? You can fire me and I don’t care!”
“I can’t actually.”
“You can get my shift covered though?” Marlene wasn’t about to make this easy for him.
Sirius sighed, “My family doesn’t like a scandal, I’ve been disinherited for a while now, so I really can’t. But if I call up the store, say my name and demand someone take a shift, they tend to listen. Not a lot of questions asked.”
Now it was Marlene’s turn to pause. “So... I will definitely get fired for going out with you then?”
He laughed, a full, whole-hearted laugh. “Probably, if they find out.”
“Or I could release the story to the press?”
“Or,” he said more firmly now, “You could come downstairs, get your pretty blonde head some free coffee and delicious cinnamon buns, and if you still hate me I promise to never speak to you again.”
“Promise?” The blonde repeated.
“I’d make it a pinky promise if you were here.”
Hanging up the phone, she rubbed her temples and turned over, a shift covered meant she could sleep some more. But as her eyes shut, her stomach grumbled. Fuck. She thought to herself, already knowing that he caught her. A clock ticked and she kicked the air before raising out of Lily’s bed, tying her hair half-hazardly out of her eyes and grabbing her keys, not even bothering to change out of her pyjamas.
