This is what I am, this is who I am, no apologies. My ancestors were both free and enslaved Africans and indigenous Americans. We didn't all end up on reservations. They simply stripped us of our identities and much of our cultures and left us to be assimilated. My parent tongue is Mvskoke, and Geechee, I only grew up speaking Geechee and was then forced out of that and into "proper English". I was raises to love my people and never let a living soul dictate my identity to me. You don't like that? Look within. ------------------------------------------------------ Reposted from @buhbleblack (@get_regrann) - Black Seminoles were enslaved #Africans and #AfricanAmericans who, beginning in the late 17th century fled plantations in the southern American colonies and joined with the newly-formed Seminole tribe in Spanish-owned Florida. From the late 1690s until Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, thousands of #NativeAmericans and #runawayslaves fled what is now the southeastern United States, heading not to the north, but rather to the relatively open promise of the Florida peninsula. #Africanpeople who escaped slavery were called #Maroons in the American colonies, a word derived from the Spanish word "cimmaron" meaning runaway or wild one. The Maroons who arrived in Florida and settled with the Seminoles were called a variety of things, including #BlackSeminoles or Seminole Maroons or Seminole Freedmen. The Seminoles gave them the tribal name of Estelusti, a Muskogee word for black.
