🖤#ArtIsAWeapon #HarrietTubman #ChristmasEve Photo and caption reposted from @nmaahc
On #ChristmasEve 1854, Harriet Tubman returned to her Eastern Shore Maryland home to emancipate her brothers Ben, Henry, and Robert from slavery. Tubman had heard rumors that there were plans to sell the men the day after Christmas, so she sent word to her brothers through Jacob Jackson, a free African American man.
During the slavery era, Christmas became a popular time for freedom seekers to plan escapes because enslaved people often received travel passes to visit family who lived on other properties during the holiday. Once they received travel passes, they were not expected to show up again until well after the holiday. Tubman wrote in code: “tell my brothers to be always watching unto prayer and when the good old ship of Zion comes along, to be ready to step on board.”
The brothers had travel passes to visit their parents Ben Sr. and Rit Ross for Christmas. 3 others, including Ben’s fiancée, would join the group on their journey North to freedom. They traveled more than 100 miles, arriving at William Still’s Anti-Slavery office in Philadelphia on Dec. 29, 1854. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory

The culture of a black hero, that's what the two of them talked about and how they have to uphold it while also making sure they don't have a bad day. Which I do wonder how do the hero's keep the culture goin when they're apart of these white majority groups and don't get to connect with those that look like them as much as they'd like.

On This Day On February 4th, 1913
A American Hero & Legend Was Born
Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honored her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks rejected bus driver James F. Blake's order to vacate a row of four seats in the "colored" section in favor of a White passenger, once the "White" section was filled. Parks was not the first person to resist bus segregation, but the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) believed that she was the best candidate for seeing through a court challenge after her arrest for civil disobedience in violating Alabama segregation laws, and she helped inspire the Black community to boycott the Montgomery buses for over a year. The case became bogged down in the state courts, but the federal Montgomery bus lawsuit Browder v. Gayle resulted in a November 1956 decision that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Parks's act of defiance and the Montgomery bus boycott became important symbols of the movement. She became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation, and organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including Edgar Nixon and Martin Luther King Jr. At the time, Parks was employed as a seamstress at a local department store and was secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP. She had recently attended the Highlander Folk School, a Tennessee center for training activists for workers' rights and racial equality. Although widely honored in later years, she also suffered for her act; she was fired from her job, and received death threats for years afterwards. Shortly after the boycott, she moved to Detroit, where she briefly found similar work. From 1965 to 1988, she served as secretary and receptionist to John Conyers, an African-American US Representative. She was also active in the Black Power movement and the support of political prisoners in the US.
After retirement, Parks wrote her autobiography and continued to insist that there was more work to be done in the struggle for justice. Parks received national recognition, including the NAACP's 1979 Spingarn Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall. Upon her death in 2005, she was the first woman to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. California and Missouri commemorate Rosa Parks Day on her birthday, February 4, while Ohio, Oregon, and Texas commemorate the anniversary of her arrest, December 1.
Today Is Her Birthday 🎂
Happy Birthday 🎂 To You The 1 & Only

Today's portrait: Booker T. Washington, one of my lifelong heroes. He advocated for practical education in Trades and domestic responsibilities for everyone regardless of race.
Drawn in graphite, HB pencil. Looks like I've just about gotten my money's worth out of that eraser haha.

🔥 Confronting Monstrosities: Reclaiming Identity & Overcoming Oppression 🔥
On this fifth day of Black History Month, we reflect on the fight to reclaim identity in the face of oppression. Inspired by S.O.L.A.D.™: Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™, today’s Reed’s Reads of Wisdom Wednesdays explores how Juanita Grayson refuses to accept that Jeff is lost, just as history has shown us that freedom fighters, abolitionists, and revolutionaries refused to accept the erasure of Black identity.
The battle against darkness, oppression, and dehumanization is real—both in fiction and in history. But we are more than what oppression tries to make us.

I absolutely revelled in every second of last night’s historic victory. Watching @sterling7 ‘s masterful performance as he terrified the German defence every time he got the ball. Sterling was undoubtedly England’s hero so it was really interesting to see the British press coverage today… As @rioferdy5 said ‘Put some respect on his name’ At best unconscious bias, at worst outright racism. The press really need to take look at themselves. #discrimination #systemicracism #whitepress #blackhero #whitefragility #narrativecreation #respectblackcontributions https://www.instagram.com/p/CQwMLzrFX9n/?utm_medium=tumblr
