We. Are. Native Son! 2017 is the year that as Black Gay Men, we claimed our manhood, found our voice and defined ourselves. We not only owned our identity, we declared #BlackManMagic #BlackBoyJoy and #BlackGaySlay to the world. We refused to me hidden in the shadows, marginalized or trapped in the closet. We came out of the dark places and illuminated the world with our brilliance. From @moonlightmov winning the Oscar to @edward_enninful taking the helm @britishvogue, @hilton.als winning the @pulitzerprizes to @kehindewiley being commissioned to paint President @barackobama official portrait, we showed up, we showed out, and we came to win! This was a defining year for @nativesonnow We hosted conversations about #StayWoke @tumblr, Black Gay Identity @naturbanleague and #BlackGayTech @google. We honored mavericks like @reggievanlee and @kylehagler at the Native Son Awards. We came together in Hollywood with @aidshealthcare and @inthemeantimemen And we were honored by @outmagazine as the #MasterOfStyle. We went to South Africa, twice. Yes, it was a good year. Now as we move into 2018, we must do so with the passion and purpose of #JamesBaldwin our icon and inspiration. Now is the time for building bridges, embodying brotherhood, and saving lives. We must create mentorship, control our narrative, and continue to raise our visibility because we matter, we are worthy, and we are enough. I’m so grateful that God gave me this assignment to serve you my Brothers. Last night in San Francisco, I got the best early birthday gift ever—I received the @glaad Ric Weiland Award for advancing media and technology for #LGBTQ+ people of color, my media career, and @nativesonnow What a blessing to receive such this tremendous honor on the eve of my new season. Three years ago, I worked on this event with @jussiesmollett @iamderay @ledisi @creativejenius and it was #ForTheCulture It was also confirmation for a idea for @nativesonnow To be honored on the eve of my #BornDay is humbling. To be seen by #GLAAD is extraordinary. We. Are. Native Son! On Tuesday night, Google and Native Son created history by hosting a conversation and convening of Black Gay Men In Technology. Over 100 brothers gathered as Torrence Boone (@google) lead a panel discussion with tech execs @jamesfeltonkeith (International Personal Data Trade Association), @dubyahs (@amazonfashion), Antonious Porch (@shazam), and Marcus Mabry (@cnn Mobile News). The talk focused on the narratives of these men, challenges in tech, identity and authenticity in the workplace. THIS is an important moment in the @nativesonnow movement as we think about how we share our narrative across multiple platforms and amplify our visibility. I’m so grateful to Torrence, @v_anthony13 and @google for believing in my vision and helping to make my dream become a reality!
