The latest strange tea concoction idea for a redneck wine batch.
I was going to just use a different fruity flavored black tea blend, because they really do seem to love that shit here. But, then I remembered that the rest of this bottle of syrupy blackcurrant juice drink concentrate (which I actually picked up mostly for another brewing experiment) was still in the fridge.
Out of what we have on hand, I thought this rosehip and hibiscus stuff with what turned out to be a rather generic berry flavor--labeled as blueberry and sea buckthorn--might work the best with slightly watery blackcurrant. With a little generic black tea thrown in for the bit of tannins. Plus, of course, buttloads of sugar to supplement what's in the remnants of the blackcurrant syrup.
That open bottle seems to be perfectly fine after sitting in the fridge for probably a couple months now. It's basically simple syrup made with currant juice. I actually grabbed a little last night to bring my blood sugar back up. But, just in case there are some low level microbes trying to grow in there by now which might try to take over before the added yeast can, I may as well essentially pasteurize the stuff by pouring it in with the hot just-brewed tea (checking temperature to make sure it's high enough). Two birds with one stone, probably: knock back anything in the juice, while also helping the tea cool down faster.
Will that combo be drinkable?

i'm glad to see there are other people as outraged as me and because i am autistic and incapable of shutting up ever i'm now going to explain it to you
let's set the scene: it's america, pre-1900. the blackcurrant industry is thriving. the timber industry is thriving.
but oho! what's this? america's white pine trees (their most prominent timber tree) are being destroyed by a fungus called cronartium ribicola, white pine blister dust. and guess what its main vector is? blackcurrant plants. well, the whole ribes genus, but blackcurrants are the favourite child. obviously
This is somewhat damaging to america's timber production, so the US govt decides you know what. we need these white pines. we need timber for housing and international trade. we can't have our trees dying from this fungus. the blackcurrants have got to go.
which, you know, i completely get it, but i'm still heartbroken on behalf of the US.
in europe they had the same problem but went fuck it we have enough other trees we like blackcurrants more than white pine and i think that was the right decision.
blackcurrants are no longer illegal in america! they're being reintroduced now because genetic modification and modern technology and stuff means they're not a threat to the pines, but the damage has already been done.
this is actually wildly unrelated to anything i have ever posted on here but i just want to extend my condolences to everyone in america because blackcurrant is a god tier fruit and flavouring and i'm so sorry it was made illegal and i'm so sorry that its replacement 'purple' flavour was fucking grape. what a fucking let down. i have so many strong feelings about this
