Couldn't have said it better. My natural hair is not the epitome of unhealthy hair. This shows lack of diversity at Clicks but this mentality is held by HR Managers and recruiters too. Certain assumptions are made about a person based on how they keep their hair. Natural hair was called "a breadwinner's hair" at my previous job by black women with related hair and no edges. The assumption is that if you have natural hair it's because you can't afford relaxer/weave/wig. Last Wednesday, WFAA Channel 8 News traffic reporter Demetria Obilor was criticized for wearing a formfitting dress that showed off her curvy physique. The critique that gained the most traction was from a Facebook post by a woman named Jan Shedd, which read "she's a size 16/18 woman in a size 6 dress and she looks ridiculous." This Facebook post went viral and sparked a lot of conversation. Hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper and Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, felt Shedd was out of line for her comments, while others claimed this was a racist attack since Obilor is a Black woman. Since her comments, Shedd claims that she's been getting attacked by the "racist mafia" and did not know the traffic reporter was Black. On the other hand, Obilor has responded by stating she isn't hurt by the comments made against her. She furthermore asserted that she will not allow negativity to hold her back. It is important to note that women have been "socialized to see themselves from the perception of others" (Ashely & Jung, 2017, p. 238). Moreover, some women concerned with their appearance will turn to cosmetic surgery if they feel they are not meeting society's expectations. Had Obilor not been a strong-minded woman, she might have succumbed to the criticism thrown her way. References Ashley, R. R., & Jung, J.
