❓ Sak Yant Hah Taew: The Five-Line Tattoo of Protection and Good Fortune
Sak Yant Hah Taew is a five-line tattoo that is believed to bring protection, good fortune, and charisma to the wearer. It is one of the most popular Sak Yant tattoos, and is often seen on Thai monks, athletes, and celebrities.
The five lines of the Sak Yant Hah Taew represent the following:
The first line protects the wearer from unjust punishment and misfortune.
The second line reverses bad luck and fortune.
The third line protects the wearer from black magic and curses.
The fourth line enhances the wearer's charisma and attractiveness.
The fifth line brings good fortune and success in all endeavors.
The Sak Yant Hah Taew is traditionally tattooed with a bamboo needle and ink made from herbs and spices. The tattoo is blessed by a Buddhist monk or ajarn, who recites mantras and chants to imbue the tattoo with its magical powers.
⁉️Pain scale 3/10. Not painful at all. I could have gone “full Thai” but it is kinda costly. This hah taew design costs 4,000 baht (6k+ php, $100+).

Omg can I please get a hannibal x a shy girl reader ? Like he’s really possessive of her and she doesn’t know how to handle it but she likes him so they date??
Sorry this took so long, anon. I’ve been bouncing ideas around and this one in particular, I believe, fits your request. Y/n feels out of place among Hannibal’s fancy friends and it becomes even more obvious when he abandons her at a party.
Trigger warnings: social anxiety, sexual harassment, overstimulation
You and Hannibal had an agreement about large gatherings. He could only bring you to a party if you had a week's notice and at least three uninterrupted hours of gaming time prior to the event.
For this event, you needed a solid six.
One of the major Maryland universities was awarding a lucrative research grant to a student of clinical psychology, and every influential name in the industry was expected to be there. As a recent college grad with a bachelor's in business you didn't know what to do with, you couldn't imagine a less welcoming environment if you tried. You couldn't fit into their world and more importantly, you didn't want to. But the thought of being noticeably different in any situation was twice as terrifying. So you spent the whole week repeating your mantra; blend in, be quiet and make it through the night.
But Hannibal had different plans for you.
Halfway through the week, just when you'd pushed the party out of your mind, Hannibal presented you with a gift.
"What's the occasion?" You asked. You hoped that if you pretended not to know, it would just magically go away.
"I brought you something to wear on Friday." Hannibal answered, hanging the garment bag up on the bureau. "You know I'll take any excuse to dress you up."
He unzipped the bag and placed a black silk dress into your arms. "Try it on so I have time to get it altered if it needs it."
The material was cool to the touch and outlined your figure so perfectly, you felt even a little naked. Hannibal, of course, loved this. You were his own personal Venus de Milo. His goddess and his muse.
“Yes, that will do nicely.” He observed, looking at you hungrily.
“Seems a little short for a such a sophisticated event, doesn’t it?” You raised an eyebrow. The answer was yes and he knew it. He was very deliberate in everything he did. “I don’t want to come off the wrong way.”
“And what way would that be, darling?” He asked, not taking his eyes off your figure.
“I mean--” You searched for the right words. “It’s a gathering of the Mid-Atlantic’s most esteemed academics, I feel like, in a dress like this, I might be seen as, well, a...”
“A prostitute?” Hannibal finished, choosing a much nicer word than you would have.
You looked down. “Yeah. It just doesn’t seem all that appropriate.”
Hannibal approached you and lifted your chin slightly to look into his eyes. “Many Christian denominations believe that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, yet she was Christ’s right-hand woman. She was first to see him crucified and first to witness his resurrection.”
“Dr. Lecter,” You smirked. “I never would have taken you for a religious man.”
“Goodness, no.” He shook his head. “But any reputable academic is expected to be familiar with biblical literature and its many contradictions and impossibilities.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“You are my divine feminine, Miss [L/N].” Hannibal said in a low whisper. “And I want everyone to see it. If they see a common whore, it would only be a reflection of their own jealousy.”
Hannibal's rationalization almost made you forget about your fear of being noticed. Almost. It all came rushing back when you arrived at the event. Not one person your age was in attendance. The women wore long, flowing evening gowns that reached the floor. The length of your skirt alone guaranteed that all eyes were on you. In a simple black silk dress, you looked the very model of high society. Silk was a sign of luxury, and Hannibal wanted everyone to know that you were a woman of means. His woman, to be precise. That was why he brought you to these functions in the first place. To put you in a dress short enough for any wandering eyes so see the smattering of love bites running up your inner thighs. He wanted everyone in his field to know that you were completely and entirely his.
You realized too late that this was all his little exercise in showing you off.
Everyone seemed to know him. He only knew a handful of people by name, and you didn't know anyone.
"And who is this delightful young woman?" A woman with a light southern twang in her voice asked, looking at you as if you were a caged animal on display.
"I wasn't aware you had a daughter, Dr. Lecter." The young man beside her laughed. "Or is she your side piece?"
Your eyes scanned the room for the nearest exit. It would be unbecoming to make a scene, so you plotted a way to slip out quietly.
“Darling, meet Dr. Charlotte Ramset and her TA, David.” Hannibal introduced, notably ignoring the young man. “Dr. Ramset, this is my intended, [F/N] [L/N].”
"I didn't realize she was also a ventriloquist!" The lady, presumably Dr. Ramset, joked. You'd heard that one a million times. She looked at you. "Tell me about yourself, sweetie. What are you studying?"
The lady was old enough to be your grandmother and reeked of too much perfume.
"I graduated last year." You said, quietly. "With a BA in business."
"See, there's a good woman." David added. "Only speaks when spoken to. They don't make ’em like you anymore, baby."
Hannibal tightened his grip on your hand. "On the contrary, David. See, Miss [L/N] is quite a bit like myself. She only dignifies those she deems worthy with a response. There's nothing wrong with being selective."
The lady laughed at David's expense and smiled at you. "Good for you."
You smiled back just a little, not ready to bring your guard down yet. "I've had to deal with more than enough. It's best not to engage."
"Oh, I know, I know." The lady said, shaking her head. "That's how it is for us educated gals. Always having to put up with pigs. See, I went to college in the sixties, so I can tell you some real stories."
This was a new experience. Talking to Hannibal's friends and having them listen to you was something you never considered possible. Now, you were one of the educated gals. You were just about to strike up a conversation with this woman, when the man next to her decided someone desperately needed to play devil’s advocate.
“I find that sexist, actually.” He cut in. “Not all men are pigs.”
The silence following his comment was deafening and you wanted to crawl into a hole and die. Whatever progress Hannibal and Dr. Ramset made breaking down your defenses was completely reversed and you were ready to retreat.
Dr. Ramset took a long sip of wine and adjusted her shawl. “David, none of us said anything about men, you drew that conclusion yourself.”
“I mean, look at you.” David gestured to your dress. You knew exactly where this was going and you wished you could just disappear. “You’re basically asking for it.”
Dr. Ramset glared at him. “David, that’s enough.”
“I’m just stating facts.” David crossed his arms. “If you dress like a slut, what do you expect?”
Dr. Ramset and Hannibal seemed to have an entire conversation through prolonged eye contact before one of them broke the silence.
"Charlotte, I hate to have to excuse myself so soon, but the president of the university is expecting me." Hannibal said, dropping your hand. Your heart hit the floor when you realized that he would be throwing you to the wolves.
"Of course, Dr. Lecter." She nodded. "Duty calls."
"I trust you'll keep an eye on my beloved [F/N] in my absence?" His voice hardened. The severity in his tone frightened you.
Dr. Ramset didn't seem disturbed or even surprised in the slightest by his gently threatening demand. "Of course."
"Thank you. And [F/N]?" He said, pressing his lips to the back of your hand. "I won't be going far. Please, try to have fun."
You tried not to look affronted, but you were going to have a long talk with Hannibal when you got home.
"I'm just saying what everyone is thinking." David continued, his inability to take a hint positively astounding. "Why don't you respect yourself enough to cover up, [F/N]? You have a boyfriend!"
Your eyes scrolled across the room looking for any sign of Hannibal, but he was gone. Dr. Ramset finished her wine and stared at her TA with the resigned disgust of a death row jailer.
"Any other thoughts?" She said, snatching a fresh glass of wine. You looked at her with a clear expression of discomfort.
"Come on, do you see any other woman in the room dressed so provocatively?" David's voice broke mid-sentence. "No. Because they're educated enough to know that real men don't care about their bodies."
The hotel clerk approached the group. "Mr. Hosmer, there's a call for you."
David narrowed his eyes. "Uh, what?"
"Someone is on the phone asking for you." The clerk repeated. "Says it's an emergency."
David shrugged. "Fine."
Just when you thought you would be rid of him, at least for a moment, he planted his hands on your hips in attempt to "get by" you. His touch was like that of an insect crawling across your skin; unexpected, filthy and leaving you squeamish.
"I'm so sorry about that." Dr. Ramset's words echoed in your ears, but you didn't really hear them. You were too focused on grounding yourself to process what she was saying.
“Dr. Ramset?” You said, quietly. “Which one is the president of the university?”
She glanced at a tall woman in a dark blue suit, surrounded by equally important looking businesspeople. You followed her eyes. “That’s Dr. Mary Hosmer.”
Your ounce of righteous fury was squelched in two seconds when the reality of having to talk to someone, especially someone of stature, set in. You looked sheepishly back at Dr. Ramset.
“Could you please ask her where Hannibal went?” You whispered. “I’d really like him to take me home now.”
Her face turned sympathetic. “Of course, [F/N]. Stay right there.”
You nodded. “Thank you.”
Dr. Ramset crossed the floor and politely greeted the president. You took a few slow, calculated steps closer, just to get in earshot.
“Pardon me, but, have you seen Dr. Hannibal Lecter?” Dr. Ramset said, casually.
“I wasn’t aware Hannibal had even arrived yet.” The president answered. “I haven’t seen him.”
Your eyes widened. You fought the urge to freeze, but you had to move back before Dr. Ramset knew you’d been eavesdropping. You heard everything you needed and rushed back to where she’d left you.
“Dr. Hosmer said he stepped out.” She told you upon her return. “He should be back soon.”
You tried not to show that you knew she was lying. “...oh.”
“Would you like me to stay with you until he comes back?”
You knew you were completely on your own. You didn’t know what was going on, but you had an inkling that it had to do with the president and David sharing a last name. All you knew for certain was that you couldn’t trust anybody.
“Don’t bother.” You shook your head. You took off for the door, but Dr. Ramset grabbed your wrist.
“I’m sorry, [F/N].” Her voice dropped to a low whisper. She didn’t look mad, but afraid. “But Dr. Lecter told me to stay with you. Please. Don’t make this harder for me.”
You recalled how seriously threatening Hannibal’s request was. She wasn’t answering to the president of the university. She was answering to Hannibal. You didn’t know whether to be scared or relieved.
“Right.” You conceded, stepping back in. “I’m sorry.”
The actual award ceremony was much longer than it needed to be, and it dragged on even longer knowing there was no reason for you to be there. Other than that, you awkwardly followed Dr. Ramset around the party like a lost puppy the whole time. You were back to your original plan: blend in, be quiet and make it through the night.
Just when you thought the party would never end, someone tapped you on the arm. You turned around, hoping with every fiber of your being that it was Hannibal, but it wasn’t. A tall woman in a dark blue suit stared back at you.
“I’m sorry to bother you, miss.” She said, apologetically. “But have you seen my son? I saw him talking to you and Dr. Charlotte earlier, perhaps he told you where he was going?”
You’d pushed that man completely out of your mind. You shook your head. “He left to take a phone call and I haven’t seen him since.”
A hand found your shoulder. “I’m so sorry, Dr. Hosmer, but I believe I saw the boy on his phone out in the lobby.”
“Dr. Lecter!” The president’s eyes widened. “How nice of you to finally join us.”
“...Yes, I believe he left right after making unwarranted comments towards my intended here.” Hannibal ran his hand down your arm lovingly.
“Well, boys will be boys.” The president chuckled. “Maybe you should teach your girlfriend not to wear such revealing clothes.”
Hannibal smiled and pulled you in protectively. “Whatever the case, I hope you find him very soon.”
Her phone chimed in her back pocket. “Oh, that’s him right now.”
“Wonderful.” Hannibal said. “[F/N] and I will be taking our leave.”
He hurried you towards the door, his hand tight around yours. A blood-curdling scream came from behind you. You looked back for just a moment and found the president hollering in pain and falling to her knees.
“Let’s go, darling.” Hannibal tugged at your arm. “They don’t deserve your presence.”
“Hannibal, I swear.” You said, once you were in the safety of the car. “If you killed every man who looked at me like a piece of meat, sooner or later, there won’t be any men left.”
Hannibal smirked and reached for his seatbelt. “Wonderful.”

Do You Promise?
Chapter 1 of a new WIP, just for you, my Tumblrers <3
August 1999 the Burrow’s garden Weasleys’ 2nd Annual End of Summer Celebration
Charlie Weasley sat on the fence separating his mother’s vegetable patch from the garden, thinking about the last time he’d sat here, one year ago. Then it had been Bill at his side, not his little sister.
“Knut for your thoughts,” she said, pushing herself up.
“Where’s your boyfriend?”
Ginny raised her brows at the implication of his answer but didn’t tease. “Around.”
“Mmm.” He’d been home for more than twenty-four hours, but he hadn’t seen Potter once. At Christmas, they’d been a package deal, never out of arm’s reach of the other. “I thought he might have had to work.”
Ginny shook her head, pigtails dancing round her shoulders like they had when she was shorter than this fence. “Today and tomorrow, but not tonight. Mum made them promise.”
By “them,” Charlie knew she meant Ron and Harry. But … Mum made them promise? Not Ginny, or even Hermione?
“Well, he’d better show up,” Charlie said, taking a drink of his beer. “He owes me a rematch.”
They had played Quidditch in the orchard last year, he and Ginny and Potter and George and a bunch of kids he hadn’t known. Played past sunset into darkness, until Professor McGonagall ended the pick-up match without a capture of the Snitch.
Ginny muttered something that sounded like “he owes me a hell of a lot more than a rematch,” but Charlie let it slide. Ginny could take care of herself.
He and Bill had made sure of it.
“Shouldn’t you be with your friends?”
“Thanks, Charlie, that means a lot.” She swiped the bottle from his loose grasp and drank.
Charlie had to remind himself she was of age to keep from overreacting, but even so, his hand twitched reflexively.
Ginny saw it and smirked round the glass, tipping her head back and the bottle up, taking several long swallows just for show.
“Yeah, you can have my beer, Sis. I’ll just get another, no problem.”
She finished with a pop and licked the foam from her upper lip before handing it back. “Thirsty.”
Charlie held the bottle up to the light—there was exactly one swallow left. “Brat.”
Ginny was predictably unfazed, gazing over the crowd starting to assemble round the food tables. “I talked to Angelina. She said Alicia couldn’t make it this year.”
“Who?” Charlie said, right as a picture of a perky brunette, with equally perky … anatomy … popped into his mind. Shit. Alicia wasn’t avoiding the party because of him, was she? The same age as George, she would know most of the people attending tonight. He’d thought they parted on good terms, all things considered….
“I thought you might be watching for Amy.”
“Amy’s coming?” He hadn’t seen Amy Green since he had invited himself back to her room and she politely declined.
“Fleur wasn’t sure,” Ginny said casually, as if she hadn’t just dangled fairy lights in front of a niffler. “She said she encouraged her to come since she sounded a little down, but Amy didn’t commit. I hope she does, don’t you?”
“Of course. I haven’t seen Amy since the memorial. It would be good to catch up.” Charlie took a subtle deep breath, repeating the mantra he told himself when he occasionally woke with her on his mind. You asked, and Amy said no. It doesn’t matter if she isn’t seeing anyone. She’s still unavailable, Weasley. No benefits, just friends.
“I remember, you know. You think I was too young to understand, but I remember. In Egypt.”
Charlie scoffed. His baby sister celebrated her twelfth birthday the summer his family had visited Bill in Cairo. “Oh, yeah? And what do you think you remember, Gin-Gin?”
“I know Bill was an arse,” she said bluntly.
This reversal of her usual hero worship got Charlie’s attention.
“I know you weren’t. And that you liked her. I know you two went out together, and you’ve both dated other people since … but you’ve never dated each other.”
Charlie sighed. “Ginny….”
“Bill’s married,” she said simply. “It doesn’t matter any more.”
“I never thought I’d say this … but go find something else to do. Even if it’s Harry.”
****
Charlie did not leave his post on the fence rail, content to get quietly drunk and watch his family enjoy themselves. He had wondered why he’d bothered making the trip in—it made three in a month, when you added the party to Ginny’s and Percy’s birthdays—but now admitted to himself it had been in hopes of seeing Amy. After all, she hadn’t refused him, exactly; she’d refused the timing.
“I think we both know what will happen if you walk me back to Hogsmeade.”
He raised his brows, leaving the challenging “so?” unspoken.
Amy closed her eyes, then pulled her hand from his. Not today, Charlie.” She waved her hand at the gates and the castle and the grounds beyond, where the first Remembrance Ceremony had just ended. “Not after this.”
“Oi, sleepyhead!”
Charlie opened his eyes to find an object in eminent danger of colliding with his nose. He snatched it from the air in sheer self-defense, then groaned when he realized he’d just crumbled one of the best biscuits he’d ever had in his life—a biscuit he’d been waiting all year to taste again.
Percy laughed. “Nice catch, Captain.”
“Shut up,” Charlie muttered, trying to transfer the contents of his hand to his mouth without wearing them.
“Full of snappy retorts tonight, I see.”
Charlie eyed his next-youngest brother, his cheery demeanor highly suspicious. “Did you just get laid?”
Percy slung one arm around his shoulders. “I, in the utmost gesture of brotherly solidarity, am foregoing my own numerous opportunities to assist you in yours, however few and far between they may be.”
“You’re pissed.” Alcohol did not make Percy more relaxed; it made him more Percy-ish.
Percy squinted one eye closed and looked towards the gate. “Perhaps,” he conceded. “But not so drunk I can’t recognize a certain beautiful brunette.”
It was Amy. She was wearing—well, Charlie supposed it was technically a dress, but he’d seen similar items under a dress or robes more than once. It was black and flow-y, with red flowers and skinny straps made to make a man think of slipping them off, and just like that Charlie saw the garment puddled at her feet. She was taller than usual in thick sandals, and even from this distance, with the cut of the dress and the way she moved—he could tell she was braless. He raised the bottle to his mouth before remembering it was empty.
“Godric, I wish I had a camera,” Percy said wistfully. “George and Ron are never going to believe this.”
Charlie realized he was making a fool of himself, closed his mouth, and turned, shaking off his brother’s arm. “What’s she doing now?”
“Making a beeline for us.”
Charlie spoke through clenched teeth. “Shut up and get the—”
“Amy! What a pleasure. We’re so glad you could make it.”
Charlie turned to find his brother kissing Amy on both cheeks with minimal difficulty, despite their height difference. His heart skipped a beat. She was taller; he could kiss her easily.
No, not kiss. We’re friends!
Oh, who was he kidding? Unless she flat-out declined, he was sleeping with Amy Green tonight. They could figure out the friendship stuff tomorrow.
“Hey,” she said, pausing just shy of kissing distance (cheek or otherwise).
“Hey.”
Her hair was down, as it often was, but she had pulled back the front above her ears, exposing small purple and silver earrings (her house colors) and … a blush?
“I would offer to bring you a handful of biscuits, but something tells me you two aren’t going to be here for long.” Percy smirked. “Take care, Amy. See you tomorrow, Charlie.”
Charlie glanced at Amy to judge her reaction. “I’m sorry. He’s, er—”
“Taking the piss?” She offered the British idiom with a grin.
Charlie returned it. “I was going to say ‘pissed,’ but yeah. That too.”
She laughed.
“I keep telling you, you’re lucky to be an only child.”
“Oh, I don’t know,” she said, brushing her hands over his chest with slow, deliberate strokes that were in direct opposition to her presumed goal of removing crumbs. “Brothers can be useful. I figured even if you turned me down, not all of you would.”
Charlie froze, just for a second, his brain short-circuiting to a night more than a year ago, before Ron had left for Australia. “Well, if she actually says it with words, that’s always a good sign, although if she strips her knickers off, that’s even better.”
Wait a minute … she wasn’t commando under that thing … was she?
It took a few moments for the silence to catch his attention.
“I take it that’s not a no,” Amy said dryly.
“No. It’s not. But—”
Her expression darkened, and she pulled away slightly.
“The terms haven’t changed.”
“I didn’t think they had,” she said cooly.
They had been here before, the autumn after Voldemort came back. Grimmauld Place, an unexpected post-meeting raid, high spirits and adrenaline … and the darkened hallway where Amy had turned him down. “I like strings,” she’d said, and walked away.
The staccato drumbeat of the Weird Sisters’ Do the Hippogriff pulled Charlie from the memory.
“Drink?” he asked, indicating his empty bottle in case she hadn’t heard him over the noise.
“Not really.”
He’d already started towards the tables, but her answer drew him up short. “Really, Amy, you could at least buy me dinner first,” he said sarcastically.
She sighed. “Look, Charlie, I don’t want to play the game. It’s why I’m here. Now, am I wasting my time or not?”
For the second time that night he found himself holding on to his temper. He was starting to see how she’d got under Bill’s skin, why he’d had such a hard time letting her go even when Bill had known he didn’t want to pursue a relationship with her.
“So what, you thought you’d just fly in, snap your fingers, and I’d jump?”
“Am I wrong?”
Godric, she was obnoxious. She was also beautiful, confident, and sexy as hell, and Charlie was honest enough to admit he found the balance of power between them as intoxicating as it was infuriating.
“We could get a room at the Leaky—in magical London—or maybe Hogsmeade?”
“I have a room in the village.”
Damn. When Amy made up her mind, she didn’t mess around.
“All right,” he agreed. “One last thing, though.”
He stepped into her space, close enough to ruffle her skirt with his legs and watch the gooseflesh pebble across her chest and shoulders. He ignored the temptation to follow it down and looked her in the eye. In heels, she was as tall as he, but his wide shoulders and bulky frame dwarfed her. He paused to let her consider this fact, still not touching her, before dropping his voice.
“You will not be in control the entire night.”
Her reaction went straight to his groin—a sharp intake of breath, dilated pupils, a shiver she tried to suppress. Then she smiled, a sly, knowing smile that reached all the way to her eyes and made them sparkle in the fading sunlight.
“Do you promise?”

Quatrains Out of Synch - A notebook of four line poems
by Dana Jerman
I thought of
a good prompt:
Begin. Keep going. End.
3 parts. Like anything.
-
On my birthday
John Giorno only thought
of a poem,
but he didn’t write one.
-
A dance, a tic, a grin
sur le vif
in media res
on the spot.
-
Dad wants a new love
Bedtime in Trumpistan
He’s left his arms in the closet with
The Brass Ring Catcher’s Little Black Book.
-
Some Jazz, a tease
to Latin. Word of
the day after a
storm: orphic.
-
Making some Christmas happen
A few cards thrown around
the green jacket
the white marshmallows.
-
Here, I rehabilitate
the failures of my imagination
opening tombs, to
let the light reclaim.
-
Can’t kick this headache
Sedentary living and beer
Meanwhile, time, busy
working its angry miracle.
-
A mantra for dessert:
Blush will catch up to you
While you wear black
and eat white cake.
-
Old soundtrack nostalgia
Not drunk but romantic
Furthest from rude
is this idiot smile.
-
The composite of
the town I grew up in-
Dreaming preloads it
with the same old young characters.
-
All of January
My nose draining
The cold like a knife.
Bright sun: weak star.
-
Every damn chance
in the whole world
that the people’s hero
is knocking on your door.
-
What has brought me here?
A healthy condemnation for school
Not much sense or care for too much money
And one true love.
-
Hours creep by
music playlists continue
chocolate before sandwhich
Busy without being busy at all.
-
Someday I’ll look back
on a holiday spent propped
in a bookstore with a fuzzy
sweater, whisky, and this soundtrack on repeat.
-
Paracinema:
up all night
too much popcorn-
no work tomorrow.
-
Alarm out, I brought
the dream with me:
A casino with the slots and seats
set impossibly high along the walls.
-
Remind me to wash
the windows
on the first
warm day.
-
Echoes of voices and music
From an unknown destination
Siren song on New
Years Day in Chicago.
-
‘Fighter’ rhymes
with ‘writer’
for a
reason.
-
Found books
are a call to action
Last stand for
the invisible hand.
-
I wanted to call them “Tatters”
Couplets written after Harryette Mullen
Like: Shredded rainbow-
dried blood in a unicorn tooth.
-
Sore neck in the AM
Not a busy morning
put ginger on my toast
for the first time ever.
-
It would have been a perfect night
in front of that fireplace in the
house about to be sold. But my
companion and I had no words.
-
The mental eye
deep in hypnotic recall
all senses employed
time catapulting reverse.
-
Do not knock-
Do not open-
Tiny writer
is dreaming.
-
All that summer trip long
I only had Reader’s Digests.
But I read them anyway.
It was all I wanted to do.
-
A confession and mirror
Aware of the furniture hex
No clunky frame or hidden desires-
I despise rolltop desks.
-
My life, your life.
Most of our deus
ex machina will
remain forever invisible.
-
hey sweet thing- maybe
there can be a code name- a word
we can link to sexiness to trick it into being
happiness.
-
A smart case, Death.
hanging around the night
with its patient wits,
its cigarettes, its camera.
-
Steam became smoke
salt to the walks
mulled plum twilight
smoke became steam.
-
I bite away half
the chocolate just to
see what it is. It’s my
box, I do what I want.
-
Now, I have to take
up all those bad
decisions- every move
I would not make- and build the unlikeable character.
-
It really is the end
of era in here.
but it doesn’t feel that way
to me. Not yet.
-
Early train. Sun
coming. A magic fireball
swinging a fixed line
across thin bare trees.
-
Monday afternoon-
wine at work
while reading
an Italian poet.
-
Quiet neighborhood-
snow looms late afternoon
Hours so songless, only the
bus driver dares go thru them.
-
Still air
at bedside
candles in silent vigil
no unsoft thing is here.
-
Dust, rust, mold.
Mars rotting is my crotch’s
monthly waves knotting goodbye-
a color, a flavor, a wash.
-
In the windows facing out
of the lamplit cafe beyond fireplace
and bookshelf, my good man stands and smokes
his last pipe of the day, first of the night.
-
Pink salt sky.
All morning to twilight.
Late winter city hurled
toward evening on a blossom’s hue.
-
Today they cleared the
trees in the back.
lovely summer shade
now gone to make way for…
-
The dead music of jackhammers
begins next door
in the snow flurries
and grey.
-
Snow thin as an abstract wish-
Bundled passengers stop and start
warm jazz soundtrack ambience
to this well-lit retail saturday late afternoon.
-
New Years Day close
as a star, a dream.
I will bless the decade
and ask for nothing.
-
A seemingly
inquenchable thirst
for alcohol
and good music.
-
Cataclysm of ideas
groovy songs amid bad
is the band name
Fever Chart taken?
-
Today is the day I awaken to
the knowledge that some poets
must think space is as good
as the next word.
-
A plum color and
an old lable.
Deep in the glass the scent
of my grandparent’s cellar.
-
Making dinner
lots of lights on-
jazz calms me down
as the snowy day spins.
-
Editing his book
listening to jazz
craving sex and the next
good line.
-
Fill in the blank:
Drunk as a — (Lucian Freud)
in— (Goya’s studio)
looking for— (God).
-
Wilde’s hand
low at his side
turned to shape
the Paris breeze.
-
My back itching
in that same place
where my husband gets
a little obstinate blackhead.
-
The week my father died
I threw many books into the fire.
Under those nights, blue as a dream,
past become prologue again.
-
Newest in self-care technology
a coat hangar with brains-
HAID: Home Abortion
Interface Device.
-
Love was the crag in
the way of my
youthful need
for seeing.
-
Draw a flag
on a bill
and burn
two crimes.
-
The annoyance of
an old mistake
come true, and here,
with consequences.
-
Cardinal crashing against
ex-boyfriends bedroom window
the spirit of my future husband
come to liberate my misspent love.
-
Kid eats my apple
coughs into the air
eats some more
smiles, runs and neighs.
-
Spare papers and pens
bag of cheeze curls
B-sides on repeat
good free afternoon.
-
Sighways…
long straight roads
Billboards for places
you don’t want to go.
-
Mother will say “morbid”
When I admit to
wanting to be buried
in her wedding gown.
-
“Bring a torch,
Jeanette, Isabella.”
Holding back tears at
my xmas retail job.
-
Remember the night
we were so alone and
sad and bored that we
chased a firetruck until it disappeared over a hill?
-
Old Story: “He makes me unhappy,
but I love him.
What should I do
this time?”
-
I want 1989.
The best night of
that year in the honkey-tonk
bar that later got torn down.
-
Potato chips and
chocolate covered
anything help to
conspire comfortable magic.
-
East coast news.
I could smell the snow
coming toward the city
all day thru hi-clouds.
-
Echoes of construction-
At home the reverb
rattles my building,
my body, my teeth.
-
If I become a statistic
I’ll tell you
its worth it.
I’m not gonna live in fear.

Reversed (Reworked) Chapter Three
Chapter Title: Deacon’s Quandary Word Count: 4270 Rating: PG Genre: Fantasy/Gen
Summary: Although John's made friends with students from other Views, it doesn't look like his Vexxzusian friends are too thrilled. After an explanation of Freddie's Ghittan magic, John stalks away, only to find a problem hidden in the dark reaches of the Vexxzus dormitory.

---
"There's nothing about it not to get," Freddie said, wrapping his hands around the open pouch on the table. Over the past month, the unlikely quartet had sort of staked out their own territory in the Well, always gravitating toward the same spot. They gathered there whenever possible--every day, if they could.
"I agree," Brian said.
Today, Roger had dismissed Ghittan magic. Freddie had things to say about that, and he wasn't about to let Brian pontificate in his stead. "You would," he replied, albeit he hoped with satirical affection.
Brian tried: "It's just that--"
"Tut-tut," Freddie interrupted. "I'm explaining today. You've chosen to wear the colors of Kyyra. That means I'm better than you at at least one thing."
Brian sighed.
Freddie dipped his fingers into the beaded pouch, removing just a pinch of loamy sand collected from the bottom of the hot spring. "The earth has power," he said. "And if you're very lucky, like me, you can feel its magic coursing through you every time you touch it. That's why so many in our View don't wear shoes, see? Even though the Vale is built right from the earth, it's still manufactured. The power is so much less. Unless we're here in the Recreation Well. It's powerful here. Natural."
"But carrying around a bag," Roger said. "With dirt in it!"
"Several, actually." Smiling, Freddie removed a few more from his pockets, each collected from a different place. "I've quite the collection of pouches, you see. You can never tell what a situation will call for. In any case, within the Vale, I can't do magic without a strong connection to the earth. Think of the pouches as a supplement. Each grain contains the magic of the planet, so I can use it even indoors."
"But the soil expires," Brian said. He couldn't help it, Freddie supposed.
"Yes, yes, I was getting to that. Detached from the planet, the magic eventually fades."
"What a hassle," Roger said. "If I had to buy a new wand every couple days, I just wouldn't do magic."
Freddie laughed. "I don't buy a new pouch! I just dump out what I have so the earth can renew its magic, then I collect from somewhere else."
Roger dismissively waved a hand. "But you have to walk to do that. Right? What if you're sick, or you're just super lazy?"
"Like you?" John wondered.
The insult flew over Roger's head. "Exactly!"
"Well, that's why we each gravitate toward a certain View," Brian said. Taking hold of a fine silver chain, he pulled a severely faceted sapphire from the collar of his jumper. "There's some people who can choose between one or the other, but I think we all sort of have a certain favorite in our hearts. One that's easiest for us to manage."
"A gem's the same as a wand or a staff," Roger argued.
"You know that's not true." Brian reached behind his neck, unclasping the gem so he could set it on the table. "It's similar, but the gem draws from the self. My own innate magic. And Roger, your wand draws from the magical implement inside it. Magic-From-Magic."
Each View had its own sort of... mantra. One that governed the entire discipline. Magic-From-Magic. Magic-From-Self. Magic-From-Earth. And, of course, the newest View, Magic-From-Death.
Roger narrowed silver eyes. "I've seen you tire yourself out."
"Yes, yes," Brian said. "It's true. It can be depleted if I do too much. But the advantage is, I will eventually be able to do more with what I have, because the magic is mine. I understand it better than any of you will ever be able to understand yours. Anyway, why are we arguing? There's no View that's better than any other. Each has its own advantages and... limitations."
Somehow, their gaze collectively wandered to John. He noticed. And bristled. "What!"
"Having to kill something to do magic is a pretty bad limitation," Roger said.
Uncomfortable, John fidgeted. "It's okay. I breed the beetles in a tank in my dorm." He produced a leather strap from his pocket, which had been rolled into a spiral. At various intervals, a tiny glass vial was attached to the leather; each vial contained a bit of moss and a single shimmering beetle. "My parents told me to always make sure their deaths are quick and painless."
Freddie couldn't help but say, "Their deaths would be entirely preventable if you'd try Ghittan. Here." He handed over one of his many pouches. One that actually complimented the Vexxzusian colors of green and black. "My gift. From me... to you. Aren't you grateful?"
John stared at the pouch as if it contained deadly acid.
"He says he can't do other magic," Roger said. "I tried to get him to try Oerris, but he said he can only do the one."
Brian arched his eyebrows. "Some have a strong preference," he said. "And some can only do a couple. But the nature of death magic is--"
"Everyone knows if you're a Vexxzus, it's a choice," Freddie finished. "Any Vexxzus has at least one other discipline they can master. It's... Oh, I don't know. The promise of potentially unlimited power that draws people to death magic. It's selfish, is what it is. Er..."
Sometimes, he forgot. Even in the middle of a conversation, it could absolutely slip Freddie's mind that John was a Vexxzus. He attempted to salvage his blunder. "Present company excepted? I mean, that's just what they say. Tell him, Brian."
With sarcasm, Brian said, "You want me to talk now?"
"Yes, please."
He sighed. "I don't know a lot about it. I know I can do it if I want to, but I've always found it off-putting. But... Yes. I think it's pretty common knowledge that--uh--what Freddie said."
John stood, seizing the pouch and stuffing it into the pocket with his beetles. "Thanks for the dirt," he growled, stalking away.
Freddie hoped it was all for show, but John eventually disappeared into the stairwell. Strangely, a couple other Vexxzus deliberately followed him.
"Did you see that?" Freddie asked.
"The tantrum?" Roger replied. "Yeah, I think we all did."
"No, he's being followed," Brian said. "I don't think some of the others in his View are happy with him hanging out with us. The Vexxzuses don't really like the other Views. I guess it makes sense, considering how we feel. I'm not too keen on the Vexxzuses either, except for John."
"Imagine if they knew he was hanging out with a mermaid, too," Roger said.
"Once again," Freddie hissed, "Siren. Not mermaid. Sirens are much prettier."
"You're so ugly, though." Roger practically beamed with glee, barely ducking out of the way as Freddie swiped at him. He'd really walked right into that one. For all Roger acted like an idiot, he was awfully quick with a joke.
"You're still compensating for asking me to marry you. You know? After the incident? That's what you're doing." Freddie knew the comment hit home when Roger blushed. "Oh, don't be embarrassed. You're not the first."
"I almost did," Brian admitted. "Of course, I have half an ounce of sense."
"This is not Pick-on-Roger day," Roger muttered. "I checked my calendar this morning."
"He starts it, then he can't take it," Brian explained. "Anyway, they're going to be posting a list of some of the new books that are coming in at Illiya's--" He went to check his watch, and found it wasn't there.
Roger held it up. "Nabbed it while you had your giant nose stuck in a book."
"Give me that, you little thief." Brian snatched it out of the air, strapping it back around his wrist as he hurried off. "My nose is just fine. And you're terrible."
"Eh, I know." Roger shrugged, stood, and stretched. "I'm going to go have a nap before try-outs."
"Try-outs?" Freddie wondered. "You're going out for Virtuatekk?"
"Wish me luck!" Roger said, turning on his heel.
Which left Freddie alone.
Freddie hated being alone, but more than that, he hated being alone with guilt. At least if Roger and Brian had stayed, Freddie would be able to distract himself with conversation. But all he could see was the betrayed look on John's face. The disappointment. The trauma.
He should probably apologize. "Can't believe I'm doing this," he said, pushing himself to his feet.
The main stairwell from the Well branched into several others, each leading to different parts of the school. Though they could be confusing, and many a student had lost their way within the winding paths, Freddie inherited at least a bit of his father's sense of direction. Though he'd never been to the Vexxzusian dormitory before, he knew the general direction of its location, and soon found his way there.
But then almost thought twice about continuing, because the area was so completely foul. Dungeonlike, it was constructed out of low ceilings and stone pillars. It was dark and smelled of rot and death, which made sense, but made for a rather unpleasant aura. Freddie couldn't even feel a hint of the earth's magic through his toes, as if the very earth had forsaken this place. He'd have to brave the cobwebs and giant spiders--seriously, why were there giant spiders?--if it meant making sure John was okay.
Was it so unkempt because the rest of the Vale avoided this place? Did the cleaning staff even venture here? Stepping over a spilled potion puddling on the uneven floor, Freddie searched for any hint that the area had been dusted in the last twenty years.
Perhaps the interior of the dormitory was more palatable than the reception area. If not, he'd have to have words with John, and perhaps entice him into joining Ghittan. Some students did switch Views, after all, once it became clear that they fit better elsewhere.
As Freddie pondered his pitch, he heard soft sobbing.
Narrowing his eyes, he turned a corner toward it and nearly sauntered right into a trio of Vexxzuses with their backs turned to him. Quickly, silently, he ducked behind a crumbling partition. Hidden by shadow, he could almost sit right out in the open to watch them as they gathered around a fourth student on his hands and knees, shivering on the damp floor. It was John.
"Aw, he's crying now," one of the voices mocked.
"Good," said another.
"Do it again," the first voice said.
"I already did," John cried. "Please, just--"
"Do it again!"
Through the brutish Vexxzuses' arms, Freddie watched John reach into the Ghittani earth pouch and take just a pinch, then mutter some words Freddie couldn't hear. It must have been a spell.
Immediately, John screamed and whimpered, falling over onto his side.
Freddie wanted to run to him, but there was no way he could fight his way through three nearly-graduated Vexxzuses, as oily and wiry as they were.
"You'll thank us later," the first voice said. "You're going to do this again and again until you figure out why we don't hang out with the other Views. We protect our own."
This certainly didn't seem like protection. What were they doing to him?
"We should have another twenty minutes before anyone comes down here," the second voice said. "Go make sure no one's coming. It's gonna get worse."
Freddie ducked back into the shadows as footsteps approached, then passed. Once the Vexxzus was out of sight, Freddie peered around the partition again, only to wish he hadn't. He could see John much more clearly now. Huddled on the floor, the second-year cradled his hand, which had erupted with a hundred boils. Someone had also cursed him with antlers, too, as his hair was stacked and stretched unnaturally into characteristic pronged horns. With John's long hair, he had quite an impressive set. In fact, his head was bent forward, unable to support their weight.
"Careful. Don't go too far," The second voice said. "If he backfires enough..."
"I know. It'd serve him right, hanging out with..." the first voice trailed off, then said, "Don't, by the way. You're lucky this is just a warning--Hey!"
As John tried to crawl away, the first Vexxzus kicked him. Hard.
John yelped, and Freddie had seen enough.
He'd never used his voice as a weapon before. At least, not like he was thinking of using it. Still, he began to sing the words of an old song, hoping immunity to his voice wasn't a common Vexxzusian trait.
"The breeze in Scotland bends the trees The trees refuse to break The Wind blows waves onto the shore Destruction in its wake Soon all is left in ruins The trees, the land, and man The Siren lives and stands alone Their death, his only plan."
He waited for them to come running, to find him, to beat him like they did to John, but it was silent, except for the whimpering. Freddie looked around the partition again, finding the two older Vexxzus students staring at him blankly. John was staring at the floor, his antlers resting on it. Now and again, he sobbed quietly.
Confident they wouldn't be able to break out of the song's spell, Freddie hurried forward, kneeling next to John. He looked bad, face contorted in pain. "It's okay, I'm here now."
John just whimpered.
"John?" Freddie said.
The boy tried to lift his head, but couldn't. Freddie rifled through his pockets until he found the spring-silt bag. "I'm gonna cut the antlers off. Your hair's going to be shorter for a while, but you'll be able to walk, at least. Okay?"
"Mm-hm," John answered.
Smudging a bit of dirt onto each antler, Freddie intoned "Ecutis" and severed both. They clattered to the floor and John finally looked up, green eyes wide and filled with tears.
"I thought--They--"
"Shh. It's okay. We'll get you to the hospital."
Freddie had to deal with the other Vexxzuses first, though. "I hate your whole bloody View, John. Seriously. You lot." He looked up, addressing the boys. "You ever do this again... You ever bother him again..."
Could he do this? It was stepping over a line... Appealing to their self-preservation while robbing them of a choice. "Don't hurt him ever again. If you do, I'll kill you."
They nodded stupidly.
"And... And you're to forget I was here. You're to forget it was me. Go--Go back to your dorms now. Stay there 'til tomorrow."
Unquestioningly, they did, shuffling off like zombies.
Freddie actually felt sick.
But he could think about that later. "You think you can walk?" he asked. John nodded, pushing himself to his feet with cracked, reddened hands. "Good. Good, we'll get you upstairs."
It was a long way to go with no one seeing them. But he didn't want to leave John down in the cold dungeon while he went to fetch someone. Thankfully, the sight of a Ghittan tugging an injured Vexxzus along by half an antler was just too much of a puzzle for some people to grasp, so they were left alone all the way up to the infirmary.
Once there, Salwix greeted them with, "You? Again?"
Freddie had no idea what that was about. "I found him outside his dorm. He was attacked." He didn't say what he'd done to the students who'd done the attacking, though. It was horrible, robbing someone of their free will. Plus, he was still afraid that someone would find out, even though he'd told the Vexxzuses to forget.
"Attacked?" Salwix said. "Did you see who?"
"No, I don't know the Vexxzuses," Freddie said. "And besides, I only saw their backs." Another lie. "Can you help him?"
"Of course," Matron Salwix said. "Of course. You run along now, though. I'll have to figure out what this is before I can heal it."
Freddie nodded, weakly making his way out of the infirmary and sitting down on the top step just outside.
That's where Roger and Brian found him several hours later.
"He didn't really say anything. That was the scary part," Freddie said, after he'd told the story. "I mean, John always has something to say. But all the way upstairs, he just..."
"Poor kid," Roger said. "It's okay, we'll figure out who it was."
"I might have left that part out," Freddie said, looking at his hands. "I mean, they'll... They'll definitely leave him alone now. We don't have to figure out who it was."
For all he tried to forget it, Freddie could remember each of their staring, blank faces as if he'd known them his whole life.
"Freddie, what'd you do?" Brian asked.
"I told them... If they ever hurt John again, I'd kill them. Then I told them to forget who I was." Freddie wouldn't look up. He couldn't bear it if Roger and Brian were judging him. "And they have no reason to believe I can't kill them, since they don't know what I can do."
"What's wrong with that?" Roger asked. "Sounds pretty smart to me."
"Under the circumstances..." Brian said. "It sounds like you did the right thing."
"Yeah, but taking away their free will..." Freddie started, but Brian held out a hand, cutting him off.
"You took away their ability to hurt someone. Bugger their free will. If they're going to go after John because he's friends with you, I say you did the right thing."
Roger nodded.
Freddie only felt marginally better. It was one thing to agree with what he did. It was another thing entirely to have done it. "If I can do that, what's to stop me from telling someone to jump off the top of the Vale, or I'll kill 'em?"
"There's nothing," Brian said. "But that's not who you are, is it?"
"Of course it's not," Roger said, smiling. His eyes were an iron-colored silver, turning slowly purple as it prepared to rain. "Think about what you did, Fred. How old were they? Sixth? Seventh year? You took out all of 'em by singing. You might have saved John's life."
"I don't think they would have killed him," Freddie said.
"Still," Brian said. "You did good. Nothing about what you did is remotely bad."
"Guys?"
They turned around to find John standing just outside the infirmary door. The antlers were gone now, though his hair was much shorter and puffy, almost cloud-like. There was a nasty bruise under one eye, and his hands were bandaged. "Did you wait here for me?"
"Of course," Freddie said. "And these two found me when I didn't show up in Rec."
John sat down on the step next to Freddie, and leaned on his shoulder. "I'm so tired," he said. Freddie put his arm around him.
John did seem so much younger than the others just then. He was small, even for a second-year, and at the moment, he was even quieter than usual. To think that other people from his house--sixth or seventh years at that, Freddie was sure--could attack him so viciously that he'd stop talking entirely...
"I'm... Allergic to the other Views," John said. "I'm not supposed to tell anyone. The other Vexxzuses think it makes us weak."
"Allergic?" Brian asked. "Like..."
"Yeah. Some Vexxzuses are. If we try to cast magic in other ways, it backfires. It doesn't matter what you cast, either. The effect is random. And the more you try, the worse it gets. I don't know how far they were gonna go, Freddie. If you hadn't found me..." He tapered off, shaking his head.
All Freddie could say was "I'm so sorry."
"That's why some people go to Vexxzus," Brian realized. "They have to. They don't have a choice."
John nodded.
"Well, I'm glad you're still talking to us," Freddie said. "Those brutes made a compelling point. Are you going to--I mean, what if someone else...?"
John smiled. "I'll be ready next time. I'm tougher than I look. Besides, those ones Freddie sang at are the worst, and they won't bother me anymore!" Freddie detected a note of pride in the second-year's voice, and it made all his worries evaporate.
"No, they won't," Freddie replied. "But there's others...?"
"I said I can deal with the others," John said, a hint of his constant low-grade irritation returning. "They won't catch me off guard again, trust me."
"Temper," Roger said.
John reached around Freddie and gave Roger a shove with a heavily-bandaged hand.
"Just be careful," Brian said. "You've got a long ways to go here. Don't get yourself expelled."
"Oh, I'll be careful," John promised, with the ghost of a very reckless smile.
---
Brian knew something was up when John asked him to create a spellslip.
Spellslips were a creation of Kyyra mages and contained just a tiny, temporary, extremely malleable shred of self-magic written on paper. They had dozens of practical uses, and more talented Kyyra could transfer their magic in amazingly creative ways.
John didn't ask for anything creative, though. He asked for a microfect--which was essentially the essence of one's magic--written on a strange piece of near-translucent paper.
And sure, the other Views could impose their own magic on a spellslip, but the infinitesimal amount of magic Brian transferred made him more curious than wary.
Additionally, John had asked Freddie for a scale, and Roger for a spellvial--essentially the same thing as a spellslip, but in liquid form and far, far more volatile. Spellvials were unique to Oerris, but few ever used them. They tended to explode.
Brian made John promise that he wouldn't make anything explode, but John just laughed and said, "don't worry." It didn't exactly assuage Brian's fears.
It did get him to thinking about the creative ways one could combine various magics into something more powerful. Perhaps Vexxzus wasn't the "future of magic," as some mages in the discipline insisted. Perhaps the true potential of magic lay in its combination.
In any case, Brian mostly forgot about the gifted spellslip until one fateful day in the cafeteria.
Most Views tended to keep to their own tables, although Brian, Freddie, John, and Roger usually sat together anyway. It was a little odd for John to be apart from the other Vexxzuses; over the past few days, he'd gotten some glacial glares from his fellows. Even if other Views sometimes sat with their friends from other dormitories, the Vexxzuses almost never did.
Although John seemed to relish these glares. Odd.
"What're these?" Freddie asked, sitting down at the long table and indicating the cakes placed at even intervals. Most of them were already cut into, with many students already enjoying their portions.
"Don't know," Roger replied, his face covered in frosting. "Something the Vale did, I guess. Don't think it's a holiday. Maybe one of the teachers' birthdays?"
Brian shrugged to indicate his own ignorance. "They're at all the tables," he said.
"Maybe one of the staff is learning to bake," John suggested, with that same reckless smile he wore after his accident.
Before Brian could say anything, though, Roger said, "You know something."
John arched his eyebrows. "Oh, look. Brian's doing something."
"You're deflecting," Brian said. "Clearly. Besides, what I'm doing isn't nearly as interesting. I'm just making a list of books to look for on Weald Day."
"You know you can just send a Mailer Daemon to the Weald and they'll send you back what you need," Roger said. "That's how I got that anger management book for John."
John rolled his eyes. "Yes. It made wonderful kindling."
Brian blinked. "You didn't."
"He did! Thankfully..." Roger trailed off as he reached into his bag, pulling out a book titled Managing Your Rage, which he presented to John. "They were on discount, so I've got thirteen more. If this one falls into the fire somehow, or gets thrown into the spring, or flies off the roof of Vale Rest and into the foggy moors never-to-be-found-again, you just let me know." "Great," John growled.
"See?" Roger said. "It's already working. He hasn't turned me into a frog yet." "Yet." John smiled, then reached across the table to turn Brian's watch so he could see it. "You're about to find out what I've been doing," he said, then gave a surreptitious nod toward the gathered Vexxzuses.
Curious, Brian turned to watch. So did the others. "Any second," John said again. "And... Now." Not all the Vexxzuses, but a good number of them, jumped from their seats at the same time. Some of them were clutching their backsides or stomachs as they fled amid the confused stares of the other students. Some of them nearly fell over each other as they fought to escape, and most cried out in rather comical desperation. Laughter and cries of shock came from the hall just outside the cafeteria.
"One spellslip written on cake parchment," John said, "designed to cause a simultaneous magic effect. One spellvial of vanilla extract--sorry, Brian. It's an explosion, but probably not the kind you were expecting. And one of Freddie's scales, finely chopped, spelled with my own magic to carry the memory of sirensong. They won't know I did it, but they'll be wary of me for reasons they don't even understand."
Roger looked at the nearly-finished piece of cake on his plate.
"Oh, don't worry," John shrugged. "It was just for Vexxzus." Roger non-subtly pulled another couple copies of the anger management book out of his bag, and placed them in front of John.
John just smiled.
Brian couldn't help but be impressed.

7. Beyond time and space
I came here for answers, you repeated to yourself like a mantra all the way here. You took some comfort in this thought, which helped you calm your nerves. You walked into Im’s apartment focused, even if little disoriented. He offered you a seat at the table, while he busied himself with lighting candles. He used matches, suspicious lighter forgotten. He probably did it for a vibe or to simply give you time to calm yourself. Few lamps around were turned on anyway, giving the room cozy aura. You took your coat off in an attempt to feel more civil in the whole situation. - Wine? – the spiritualist offered, picking the bottle from the drawer. You shook your head without much thought, not liking the idea of drinking at work. Not work, it’s a day off. Workplace. Drinking in the workplace. Drinking in your guest’s room. There’s so much wrong it won’t make a difference – hell, you should’ve said yes. It was too late. Brunet sat on the opposite side of the small table, the glass of dark red liquor by his side.
- Do you have any questions? – he asked, spreading velvet cloth on the desk. - Yes ..? – you answered uncertainly and continued, encouraged by the tilt of his head:- What have you done in the restaurant? - It’s not about me – he reached toward light package on his left side:- It’s not about people down there. It’s about you. - I literally didn’t do anything.. - Well, you came here, don’t you? You shook your head, eyes glued to the rich, pink fabric at the table. - I don’t know what I expected, of course you will say something like this – resignation filled your voice:- Next thing will be about fate or phenomenon that I wouldn’t understand.. - I don’t believe in fate. He pulled out black deck from the bundle; golden, silk scarf cast aside. - How does it make sense? I mean, with your.. job ..? - You don’t always do what you want to – he shuffled cards quickly in his hands, offering you to do the same. You took it, slowly mixing the cards, trying to not drop any with your inexperienced fingers. - Doesn’t it make you unhappy? When you finished, Im’s eyes were observing you closely with thumb softly grazing his lips. The moment your gaze fell to his mouth, he smiled, small chuckle following. Instantly you changed your attention to cards again, fire starting to burn your cheeks from inside. - I think we have more in common than we both think – he took the deck, spreading it on the table. Beautiful black and white flowers were embellishing the back of the magic cards. The excitement started to creep upwards your spine. - We will check how your path is going, hm? Im picked three cards without hesitation, laying them right before you. - Ready? You took a deep breath and nodded; what’s the big deal? - Let’s see.. how is life treating this lovely creature so far? – he wondered and this time, the sweet nickname didn’t go unnoticed by your ears. Fluttering the abashment away with eyelashes, you concentrated on familiar painting of the Grim Reaper. - Death? - Reversed – he drew a circle with his right hand, his rings shining in the candlelight:- The doe wants to leave the forest and pasture on the field, but she’s too afraid to do so. I.. don’t know if I want more of life; what is more, anyway? - Well.. maybe she is – you shrugged, somehow awkward:- There’s no guarantee of better grass there, right? - Of course not – he laughed:- But have you ever seen doe stuck in one place? You cast your gaze downwards, foolishness sitting back between your shoulders. Before you could close yourself in shame, his fingers grazed your hand on the table. - Life is a mystery – warm explanation you wouldn’t suspect filled his face:- Don’t resist change, embrace it instead. Release your doubts. He gripped your hand fully. - And the problem would be ..? – you asked in a small voice, feeling like a said doe trapped between stubborn hunter and a scary trap. Maybe that’s why your parents always warned you about spiritualism; this man was reading you without difficulty, pointing weaknesses that were part of your nature. A gentle squeeze of his fingers brought you back to the new card. - What do you think of this lady? Woman’s portrait was laid before you, dressed in a rich silver dress. Her gaze was fixed on the cups in her hands, carefully spilling water between them. The observation took you a while, since her image was arranged towards Im, just like Death before. - Well.. she looks very concentrated.. - Without doubt. No drop spilled, right? That requires a lot of attention, skill.. – Im looked at you expectantly, but you didn’t need his encouragement to follow the idea: - … balance? He barely nodded, still expecting more of you, so you shyly added: - But it’s reversed again.. so, um, no balance? His mouth curled upward and before you knew it, he raised your hand to said tender smile. You were damn sure he was about to kiss it, but his lips ghosted on the skin along with his warm breath. Which was probably even worse than a vision of him kissing your hand. You were thankful to yourself for getting out of your coat, because your body was under attack of hot waves, raising in temperature by each gesture of the man before you. - Temperance says doe shouldn’t come to the same watering-place everyday – his eyes almost shined when you stilled abruptly; shit, he knows it’s my day off. - Who knows how many predators are waiting, taking notice of her routine? Predators? What does he mean? Old bastards trying to flirt with you during check-in or over-confident women playing with your nerves just because of boredom? You furrowed your brows with irritation, seeing no sense in this divination. There’s no risk in your life at all, only ever-present stability. Over-balancing your life with work may be right, but it’s not a real problem, right? Right? The spiritualist stood slowly and encircled the table, sitting on the table almost in front of you, still holding your hand. He didn’t push you, giving you time to think about revelation. His presence, so much closer to you, forced your voice out though. - .. what’s the point, then? – with a dry throat,  the sentence came out rather weakly:- I mean, how to make it right? In answer to your question, he looked at the last card and then at you. You reached for it with a slightly sweaty hand, your brain huffing with loud why are you so nervous about it?, which didn’t help your nerves sadly. The last card was facing you, unlike the other two; the image showing a dynamic scene of a tall building in the middle of the storm, thunders striking in the crumbling walls and people falling out of the windows. At the bottom was a simple line – The Tower. Before you could examine it further, Im pulled you to your feet, standing along with you, chest to chest. If your heart wasn’t able to pick up the speed at the disturbing card, it surely did then, almost jumping out of the ribs. - Here’s the answer to doe’s troubles – he said, tone dropping dangerously and eyes focused on you only, as if you were the last being in the existence. Last human; last woman. Maybe a little freaked out and definitely out of proper breath, you tried to specify: - Wha-what she should do? You could feel how he huffed, no sound, but a slight movement of his body and warm breath scented with wine. - Burn the fucking forest. Not giving you a chance to respond, he grabbed you by the nape of the neck and smashed his mouth to yours.
thank you for reading

Swirling Vortex
SPOILERS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS! If you haven’t gotten far into the game yet, please read at your own risk. No end game spoilers, but major plot spoilers regardless.
Beware of tons of errors.
---
The revelation still shook her to the core of her very being. White-hot anger coursed through her veins, the skin of her knuckles turning white as she grasped the document in her hands firmly and with far more force than necessary. Wrinkles and slight tears began to form as the words neatly written in black ink reflected in her bright blue eyes. She hadn't known about this. None of it.
And now? Marionne regretted arresting the scholar instead of ending his life right then and there. Diplomacy, she told herself. A polite facade in spite of the horrors she witnessed with her own eyes; piles of limbs and dead bodies torn to shreds and left in some ditch as if they were nothing more than mindless animals. Her blood boiled and writhed inside her, but she remained calm underneath it all. Only a touch of disgust flickered across her features even as she came face to face with the murderer shielded behind the mantra, 'in the name of science.' Asili's words lacked any remorse as he casually referred to the natives as lesser beings. Marionne wanted to punch his teeth out to disregard her role as Legate to seek satisfaction to see the man beaten and bloodied like his test subjects.
In her seething rage, Marionne failed to notice Aphra discreetly leave the room to search for more clues and to give her privacy to either break or explode.
The flimsy piece of paper shook in her hands as she kept her eyes glued to the damning words scrawled upon its surface. "Constantine didn't deserve this!" Curses unbefitting a diplomatic emissary flew from her lips, the words both frigid and scalding as they broke the silence slowly suffocating De Sardet.
It wasn't an accident. Asili used them as test subjects. He didn't care if a war broke out between the Bridge Alliance and the Congregation of Merchants should his actions come to light. He did it in the pursuit of science.
Oh, how she loathed such a blatant disregard for human life.
"Marionne," she didn't move from where she stood when he called her name, nor did she when he wrapped his arms around her midsection to steady her. Vasco had noticed how her whole body shook as she held the document within her gloved hands, how unsteady she was on her feet despite the white-hot burning fury keeping her upright. Only the words written mattered to her. Exhaustion, her wounds, and the heavy dizzying scent of herbs, blood, and alcohol she chose to ignore.
It couldn't last. Fury and justice wouldn't keep her upright for long, and Vasco knew it.
"While I'd like to put a bullet through the madman's skull," his arms tightened around her stomach, pulling her back against his broad chest, "You need to tend to your wounds before the two of us have to haul you back to Hikmet." Marionne closed her eyes, relaxing in the warmth radiating off him. Even his heartbeat, so calm and regular, soothed the fury inside her veins.
Her body fell limp against him. Exhaustion took hold like a vice, her limbs heavy and muscles screaming in pain as her emotional shield dissipated. The pain began to register. Several wounds scattered across her body pulsed with pain as the high of battle and anger fled her. He was right. And she hated him for it.
Allowing her temper to cool, she pocketed the incriminating document, rolling it up and placing it in a large pouch hanging around her waist. Her heart felt as if it were falling apart in her chest. Constantin, her sweet overly enthusiastic cousin, forced to die a painful death because of some Alliance scholar.
For a second time, her body violently shook. This time, it wasn't due to fury but despair, grief, regret, failure- she was supposed to keep him safe in this new world. She failed him. Failed to protect the only family she knew from certain death.
She struggled to hide her all-consuming grief from the world, holding back the flood threatening to break free.
Vasco buried his face up against the side of her neck, the warmth of his breath tickling her tanned skin. "No one will judge you if you cry out here. Don't stay your tears, my tempest." Water welled up in the corners of her eyes, the flood gates splintering under the weight of his words.
Fat tear droplets fell from her chin, splattering against the cold grey flooring underfoot. Strangled sobs echoed off the walls as Marionne released everything in a fit of weakness. Somehow she had twisted around in Vasco's grasp. Facing him and grabbing onto his coat as she cried and screamed until her throat was raw and her eyes puffy and swollen.
Vasco pressed his lips against her hair, ignoring how it was free from the braids that kept it neat and pinned to her head like a crown. All he could do was help her ride out of the storm brewing inside her, to soothe the raging tide before it could fill her lungs with seawater- drowning her in the darkness of the cruel ocean.
When the tears and sobs ceased they left behind the abominable laboratory, meeting up with Aphra deeper in the cavernous place. It took just one look for the scholar to understand what transpired. With a solemn expression on her face, she held her tongue, allowing Marionne time to come to terms with everything they found.
All three of them camped out far from the laboratory's entrance to tend to their wounds and rest. That night Marionne tossed and turned beside Vasco locked in a violent nightmare plaguing her dreams. When she woke, a flood surged from her eyes. Sobs wracked her muscular frame, clinging to Vasco for the second time that day. The absolute agony she endured couldn't be healed with a potion or a touch of magic.
While justice would come swiftly for Asili, the damage he caused wouldn't be solved with his passing. The damage was done. And nothing they could do could reverse it.
"Breathe Marionne." And she did. Entangled in blankets and limbs they allowed sleep to claim them. The mark of Asili's horrors burned into their hearts as they passed the night in each other's embrace.

Lord Shiva was a Lersi (hermit)
The Hindu Lord Shiva was originally a hermit by nature. Lord Shiva is depicted to be a tall, powerfully-built, and extremely handsome man, with long matted dark hair and perfect fair skin. He is always seen wearing tiger skins, and is adorned with ornaments of rudraksha. He also bears the crescent moon (which symbolizes Chandra, the God of the Moon) on his head, and is often shown carrying his trident in his right hand.

As a member of the Trimurti and the God of Destruction, Lord Shiva is powerful beyond imagination. Only Lord Narayan has the capacity to stand up to his strength and valour. Examples of his formidable awe-inspiring abilities include:
Destroyer: He is the 3rd of the Trimurtis and one of the first beings to exist , he is in charge of destruction. He is so powerful only Lord Narayana has his capacity to equal his power in the whole universe.
Immortality: As a God, Lord Shiva will never grow old or die.
Cosmic Awareness: Lord Shiva has an infinite amount of knowledge about all things within and beyond the entire universe. He is also able to see the past, present, and the future, and hence could be known as "Trikaldarshi".
Teleportation: Lord Shiva has the power of teleportation, which allows him to transport himself and others instantaneously from one location to another.
Pyrokinesis: Lord Shiva has the power to create and manipulate at will, which serves as one of his primary means of offense.

His wish-granting powers were so potent that he was even able to break the laws of nature - he did not allow Yama to take Markandeya, freeing the latter from death itself as well as giving him the mantra (Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra) to help others fend off death, and he also once granted Tarkasur the boon that he could only killed by Lord Shiva's son.
Size-Manipulation: Lord Shiva has the power to manipulate his size. On one occasion, he became as huge as the galaxy in his rage to destroy Daksh. He also increased his size during the Deva-Asura War.
