Danganronpa Togami Volume 3 Part 4 (Summary)
Continuing where we left of in chapter 2!
Thanks to @enoshima-pyon @shockersalvage @jinjojess @hopeymchope for helping out!
3. Continued
"Hey what's with that smile, do you think I’m really that great of a mood? I’m looking for my sister, so this is no time to be eating." says Hiroyuki.
Shinobu asks about Yuika and the Ketouins to which Hiroyuki says that he has no idea what she is talking about. This is not his identity, what made her think that? Shinobu answers that Borges gave her all the info she needed.
"You really are proud of Borges, the information retrieval library developed by the Togami’s. It seems that you’re convinced of the information given to you by this gadget is correct, but what if it isn’t? Is it really ok to believe everything Borges says?”
Shinobu searches for references about the Ketouin’s in Borges to check.
Borges = Search results
#67910104
Title "Dialogue after 7pm yesterday"
"The Ketouin Conglomerate... You ever heard of it?"
"Never."
(OMITTED)
"Ketouin Conglomerate. I remember hearing about it."
"Way to go, little master! Let me carry your bags! Should I fetch you some sandals and warm up some onigiri too?"
"Unlike the typical conglomerate, they're one of those 'underworld conglomerates', and top of the list, at that. Even I haven't met with someone from an underworld conglomerate before."
(OMITTED)
"What an honor. I'm Hiroyuki, the grandson of the Ketouin Conglomerate's current head,
Hatakiyo Ketouin. And that's my twin sister."
"You may call me Yuika."
"After that conversation, I searched the "KETOUIN CONGLOMERATE" #87654321 in your base inside the car factory. Even if Borges fails, you shouldn’t doubt the Togami’s.”
"Borges failing? And what did the little master say? Things are getting too complicated, it’s giving me a headache."
"Are you trying to say that the world I see is just a product of fantasy."
"'This is the world I want to see'. Hmm, I quite like that way of thinking," Hiroyuki chewed on some chicken. "Of course, this world is not just a dream you want to see, I live in the same world as you, but it seems that our Weltanschauung[1] is not the same."
"Weltan... Hey, what do you mean?"
"What I want to ask is about your talent, that is the key to your self-awareness."
My talent.
Secretary.
"Milady, do you know that it is said that the profession of ‘secretary’ was born in the Middle East around 3,000 BC, but the secretaries of that time had only one job, for centuries, despite the ability to use the privileged class of words. That's all they had."
"What kind of job?"
"Recording."
"What?"
"Recording, like, keeping records. How many beans are there, how many potatoes, how many slaves, recording these was the task of a secretary."
“They didn’t write books?”
I don’t know much about history. It’s really unexpected when I say it. I used to think that the job of secretaries were to write biographies of great emperors or a story that prospered the country with lyrical words. It seems that the earliest books are as clean as I am. Lies, exaggerations, and ambiguous expressions, they ruled out all of this, only recording the facts, and implemented this principle all the time. I felt that my approach was not wrong and I couldn't help but feel relieved.
"For centuries, the secretary has been making records," Hiroyuki nodded. " I have to ask some questions. What are the reasons for these secretaries to start writing stories?"
"Are you asking the reason why the modern day secretary has declined?"
"I don't know if this should be called declining. In short, from a certain period of time, the secretary no longer needed to record, so they started to write biographies and lyrics and such. So why?"
"Maybe because I am tired of endlessly recounting records..."
"Because of unemployment."
"What?"
"Unemployment, like, no longer having that job. Countless kingdoms collapsed, and the bureaucracy where they lived ceased to exist. At that time, the secretary found that he was abandoned like Wakame [2] on the beach, losing his original status and reputation. These secretaries have the ability to read and write words. In the past, they served the people of the national center. Their self-esteem was devastated and they felt despair."
"It is because they are in despair that there will be a story to write."
Those who have been abandoned by the world and whose desires are not satisfied, they use their only ability - literary talent, to try to find the glory of the past, if so, how much-
“Somewhat disappointing.”
Hiroyuki talks about how greek and egyptian mythology was likely written by these despair filled secretaries. They were at the top of the country in power structure, but were reduced to nothing but sheepherders living a boring life. Those people wanted to make something interesting out of their lives and pictured their ideal world, out of despair.
"You really know a lot." Shinobu answers.
"Oh, it's nothing really... When I was young, I spent my days at the library."
Shinobu feels like she is a person who feels like she has a duty to write a book, and record things, to which Hiroyuki jokes that maybe now she is out of employment she has become one of the despair fueled secretaries too.
4.
"Your Borges, your partner, your writing aid, your left and right hand, your comrade and your mentor..."
"What's with the cool speech, are you saying that I couldn't write anything without Borges?"
Shinobu thinks about how she is in fact extremely dependant on Borges, and without it, most of “Journey Under The Midnight Sun” would not have been recorded. However she never once thought that this would make her talent somewhat fake or forced, but it's because of Borges she is able to have an ability like this. She only wants to write down and record the facts.
The reality I have witnessed including my self-consciousness - this layer of extra filters, misreading, mistaking, and thinking wrong, all these human-specific errors are excluded, only the truth is recorded, to be recorded so factually like this, Borges is essential.
"You are indeed a true secretary. The original job of the secretary is to record the volume of goods in a warehouse. So to ask a new question, what would happen if the actual volume of the storage space itself is wrong?"
"What do you mean?"
"What would you do if the information Borges told you were fake?"
"Borges is perfect."
"There was a crash because the meter was broken. The pilot always believed that the meter had no problems, which caused the plane to fall. No matter what, believing 100% in something is very dangerous."
"Do you want me to doubt?"
"You have to doubt everything."
"That’s too cliché."
"I’m serious. Only prophecy can guarantee that there is no impurity in the real world."
"Prophecy……"
"If you don't find the 'Kudan' quickly, be careful that you won't be able to keep yourself. If you let the fat man take the fake goods, don't say how the world is, you must be finished."
"Who the hell are you?"
"My identity isn’t really that important."
"You aren’t answering me, Hiroyuki."
"So, uh, this person, Hiroyuki, never even existed in the first place. Hiroyuki Ketouin, Yuika Ketouin, the Ketouin Conglomerate, the Hasegawa Research Institute, Taeko Kanai, the Red Ribbon Army [3], the Black Gema-Gema Gang [4] and the International Criminal Police Organization [5], are all fiction. Fictional individuals and groups. If you think they are real, then well, your crazy. Well maybe not you who is crazy, but rather it’s Borges that is the crazy one.”
I have also noticed the differences between my memory and his testimony. However, I cannot agree with him. If I agree, then I won’t be able to trust myself, and I can't keep my story going.
"You want to get the 'Kudan' first. Be the first one to find the truth: it’s the only way to save you." continues Hiroyuki "You should let your mind run at full speed to deal with this event, as you did during The Biggest, Worst Incident in the History of the Togami Family.”
"Who are you?"
"I am your companion. I have been your companion since a long time ago. I hope you can be happy from now on. This is my only wish."
"Who are you?"
"You don't have to think about it. If you can't remember it, then blame Borges."
Hiroyuki showed a short but soft smile.
Do I... know? Do I know this unnatural smile?
"I asked, who are you. Please, answer me..."
"You can't remember. Maybe Borges not only eroded your present, but also eroded your past. You have to hurry, this has nothing to do with the Togami family and the world, for your own sake, please hurry..."
A hole opened in Hiroyuki’s head. Hiroyuki, who had a big hole in his eyebrow, still had a smile on his face, and held my hand in his. "Be yourself." his head fell onto his plate. We were under attack, so I rushed back. At that moment, there was a sharp impact on my face. I fell into the corner of the room as my face was shot. Aah, aaaaaah, lies, lies, lies, lies, aaaaah, I was hit, lies, lies, hit, aAH, I was hit, my face was hit, face, face, AAH, Byakuya-sama, I'm so scared, so scared, Byakuya-sama, I want to see you again, aaah, lies I don't want you to see, because my face is hit, I am going to die, am I going to die? I am alone, in a foreign country, I am going to die, are you going to die? A person? So scared, I don't want to be hit, █ hit, ███, I want ██, Byakuya-sama, Bya██ya, I ██ dead, █ want to see you, Byakuya-sama, want to see you, don't want to ███,█████ want to die, don't want to see you, want to see you, I want to die, I don't want to██████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

Princess Dejiko Bio
Gender: Female
Age: 10
Occupation: Princess; Employee at Gamers (original series); Employee at a toy store (Di Gi Charat Nyo!)
Family: King and Queen of Di Gi Charat (parents)
Likes: Sweets, sleeping, manga, Boys Love stories, Puchiko, messing with Usada, pop idol Akari, her home planet, her parents, blasting Gema with her eye beam, defeating the Black Gema Gema Gang, doing whatever she wants, planet Earth.
Dislikes: Being woken up when sleeping, working, Puchiko in danger, being away from home, not seeing her parents, Usada (sometimes), Gema ordering her around, not having food, people insulting Akari, her friends’ businesses being shut down, people not believing that she is an alien princess, the Black Gema Gema Gang.
Description: Dejiko is the princess of Planet Di Gi Charat. She lived a life of luxury for most of her life, until she was forced to come to Earth. In the 1999 series, Di Gi Charat, Dejiko came to Earth to become a celebrity after her home planet was attacked by Planet Analogue (her planet won the war though). In the 2002 series, Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, Dejiko remains on her home planet and dedicates her life to helping others with her friends. In the 2003 series, Di Gi Charat Nyo!, Dejiko is sent to Earth by her mother for princess training, but then decides that she wants to become an actress to be a perfect princess. In the 2006-2007 OVA, Winter Garden, Dejiko is a human teenage girl who falls in love with a boy her age. Dejiko is always accompanied by her best friend, Puchiko, and her servant/caretaker Gema.
Personality
In most of the shows, Dejiko is lazy, selfish, and destructive. Having grown-up spoiled and living the life of royalty, Dejiko often does her own thing and blasts people with her Eyebeam if she is angry. But in Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, Dejiko is kind, caring and determined to help others. In Winter Garden, she is kind yet shy high school girl. But in all of the other adaptions, she has the same destructive and spoiled personality that she has in the first series. Despite her selfishness, she does show moments of kindness and worry towards others. For example, she is kind and protective of her best friend Puchiko. She also does care for her employers, as she is determined to save their business from failing. She also loves her parents greatly and misses them while she is away on Earth. She also does show some worry about her nemesis, Piyoko, who lives in poverty and is always hungry from lack of proper meals. Dejiko tries to hide her softer side.
Relationships
Puchiko: Puchiko is Dejiko’s best friend from Planet Di Gi Charat. Despite being 5 years old, Puchiko is a bit more mature than Dejiko. The two of them are always seen together and hardly ever separate. Puchiko looks up to Dejiko and is greatly dedicated to her, as she willingly comes to Earth with her and goes along with her crazy shenanigans. How the two of them met is unknown, as the story changes with each series. In Winter Garden, Puchiko is Dejiko’s younger sister.
Gema: Gema is Dejiko’s caretaker/servant from Planet Di Gi Charat. Gema is often the victim of Dejiko’s rage and is the one who gets hit by her Eye Beam the most out of everyone. Gema keeps track of Dejiko’s progress to become a proper princess, but will often get sucked into her craziness. Gema hopes that one day, Dejiko will become a proper princess so they can return to Planet Di Gi Charat. He has known Dejiko her whole life and claims to know her better than anyone.
Hikaru Usada/Rabi~en~Rose: Usada is a 14 year old girl and Dejiko’s self-proclaimed rival. Like Dejiko, Usada’s goal is to one day become a famous idol. When dressed in her idol outfit, she goes by the name ‘Rabi~en~Rose’, and hates it when Dejiko calls her by her real name instead of her idol persona name. Dejiko doesn’t care about being Usada’s rival, but will not hesitate to compete with her if she likes the prize that comes with it. Despite the hostilities between the two, they do secretly care about each other and will help each other out if needed. Usada secretly doesn’t want Dejiko to leave Earth.
Takuro Minagawa: Takuro is a young boy who appears in Di Gi Charat. He is a normal, human boy who likes melon bread and trading cards. He is a frequent customer at Gamers, and has a secret crush on Usada (whom he goes to school with). Takuro thinks of Dejiko as a strange girl and is sometimes frightened by her. He is unaware that Dejiko draws him in her Boys Love comics.
Takuro Kimura: Kimura (not related to Minagawa) is a wealthy, young man in Di Gi Charat. Kimura often frequents Gamers. He does not interact with Dejiko much, as he adores Puchiko due to her cuteness. Dejiko is sometimes annoyed by him and vice versa. He is unaware that Dejiko draws him in her BL comics.
Gamers Manager: Manager appears in Di Gi Charat and is the one who allows Dejiko, Puchiko and Gema to live in his store. Manager is a very patient and calm man who cares about Dejiko, and is very used to her antics. She also cares about him, as she becomes angry when his store is close to shutting down and it takes a stressful toll on him. He makes cameo appearances in Di Gi Charat Nyo!.
The Black Gema Gema Gang: The Black Gema Gema Gang are an “evil” organization from the Planet Analogue. The gang consists of four members: Princess Piyokola, Rik (a 26 year old veterinarian), Ky (a 17 year old dentist), and Coo (a 12 year old doctor). Piyoko’s parents attempted to take over Planet Di Gi Charat, but failed miserably and fled to a far away resort, not planning on returning until Piyoko turned 13. Piyoko is only two years younger than Dejiko and tries to kidnap her so she can sell Dejiko for ransom. Dejiko often defeat the gang, and Piyoko is jealous that Dejiko has it better than her. Despite the hostilities, Dejiko does show some worry towards Piyoko and often doesn't;\’t take her seriously. There have been times when Piyoko shows that she wants to be friends with Dejiko, and often calls her ‘big sister’.
Rinna: Rinna is a baker from Planet Di Gi Charat. Rinna is an old friend of Dejiko who used to play with her. She is often sleeping and often annoys Dejiko because of it. Despite her sleepiness, she is a fast baker who creates delicious sweets. In Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, she helps Dejiko help people.
Mike: Mike is a fisherman from Planet Di Gi Charat. Mike is an old friend of Dejiko’s from when they were children. Mike is a young girl who is full of energy and adventure. She is a tomboy who is very strong and determined to catch many fish. Dejiko finds it hard to keep up with her, since she is so energized and strong. In Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, she helps Dejiko help people.
Yasushi and Kiyoshi Omocha: Yasuchi is the 24 year old owner of Super Omo-chan toy store. He is an eccentric young man who makes strange, and often dangerous, toys that he finds appealing. Dejiko often finds him annoying and claims that he will create more strange toys if she works at the toy store, which is often her reason for not working. He allows Dejiko and Gema to live with him and his younger brother, Kiyoshi. Kiyoshi, on the other hand, is more normal than his older brother. He is 14 years old and tries to live a normal life, despite having aliens living with him. Dejiko is not as annoyed by him, and does see him as the more level-headed one. Yasushi and Kiyoshi often worry about Dejiko and don’t want her to leave Earth. They appear in Di Gi Charat Nyo!.

Di Gi Charat Anime Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Drama CDs
Believe it or not, it's been 20 years since this banger first dropped, and we're both excited about the anniversary and terrified about where the time has gone.
youtube
Digiko, Puchiko, and Rabi~en~Rose originally starred in their own manga series in 1998, as mascots for Broccoli's Gamers shops. One year later, they got their first anime series. Since then there have been multiple manga, TV series, OVAs, and a film, many taking place in their own alternate universes and occasionally retconning each other.
Fresh off the celebration of the manga's 20th anniversary, Broccoli is pushing on to celebrate 20 years of Di Gi Charat anime in 2019. The original cast has reunited to release a pair of audio drama CDs.
The first of the two CDs will see Asami Sanada, Miyuki Sawashiro, and Kyoko Hikami returning as the main trio of the series. The second focuses on their rival Piyoko (played by Megumi Hayashibara) and the Black Gema Gema Gang.
Both CDs go on sake February 27.

“Hey! You can’t just say no to an eeeeevil person like me, Piyoko, leader of the Black Gema Gema Gang-pyo!” Well, she’s not happy.
Parents? Does she mean the Black Gema Gema Gang? “Hmph, the rest of the Black Gema Gema Gang didn’t come with me on this mission since I took it that this would be a simple one person mission-pyo!”
“Now gimme iiit! With that, the Black Gema Gema Gang can finally eat some great food-pyo!”
"...." Staring at the girl, the wolf thought quietly before smiling. "How about this then? You bring your whole gang here and then I'll see about it. How does that sound to you? And even better, I'll cook you all a nice meal too if you want." Saya offered as she patted Piyoko's head. "And maybe you'll get something extra too."

harumichi au fics
so i made a list of my favorite au harumichi fanfic ^^
(i sneaked in some silmil stories cos i love them)
i love au fics. i wish there were more. give me all of the au’s! thank you to all of the authors who have written these wonderful stories and made me go to bed at 4 am!
i likely left out some, so i may add to the list in the future. the stories varied from completed, on-going, and don’t seem like they would see another light of day. some stories may feel a bit ooc, but i don’t think they detract from the reading experience so much (for me they just add to the charm). they’re still well written and a pleasure to read, so i’m including them. ratings are also varied, so please proceed with caution (come on i know you all want the lemon ;) )
under read more cos there are PLENTY -there are around 30+ as of now- so i think you should be able to find one or two or more that you’ll enjoy.
have fun reading and missing sleep!

“Let’s see if I can win that prize...” Rabi~En~Rose was trying to shoot some balloons! She saw a prize that looked nice so she decided to try and win it. She was thinking of having some shaved ice after this.

Fun and Games – the inside track on Rio de Janeiro
Five insiders reveal how to run with the locals in the Olympics host city a spectacular tropical metropolis with great beaches, music, views and food
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cb65e70f7fc9869b610de04414f992f1/176e58c7b5f00066-e8/s540x810/16afd3758348f978550a4b7c2951db8236c0893f.jpg)
If the Olympic movement is having a hard time of it, consider the year the host city is having. In the build-up to the 2016 Games, Brazil is sinking under a tickertape parade of bad news. Given stories of polluted water, gang and police violence, an economy in freefall, the Zika virus, terror attacks and a president impeached, the reports of unfinished infrastructure for the Games almost pale into insignificance.
The Rio de Janeiro area
Lovely Rio, its easy to imagine, might just think twice given the chance to bid for the Olympics again. And yet, despite everything, the metropolis remains arguably the most beautiful city in the Americas, if not the world: whatever might happen in the sporting arenas, the Olympics has never had a backdrop as stunning as this.

And despite all their worries, most cariocas, as Rios residents are known, are proud of their amazing city. As they prepare to welcome half a million visitors to the Games, we asked five insiders to talk us through the best of their tropical seaside home.
Eating out
Rafael Costa e Silva, chef-proprietor at Lasai, one of the citys five Michelin-starred restaurants

So Paulo has more options than Rio in terms of cuisine, but we outshine them when it comes to avant garde, contemporary local food. As well as Lasai, we have Olympe, owned by the chef who pioneered the fusion of Brazilian and French cuisines; Roberta Sudbrack, with a bistro feel and sophisticated, eight-course tasting menu. Also Oro, which reopened in Leblon recently, is extremely creative.
Were closed on Sundays and Mondays, so those are the nights we can get out to eat. For special occasions, we love Olympe; but we often go to Azumi (on Facebook), a Japanese restaurant in Copacabana. The broths, the udon and the soba there are great (12-21).
Bar Urca looks out over Guanabara Bay.
Bar Urca is a Rio classic highly recommended for visitors. The food isnt the greatest, but you go there for the ambience to meet friends and drink beer sitting on the wall outside, looking out over Guanabara Bay.
Theres a restaurant in Centro, the old commercial heart of Rio, where I dont go as often as Id like, but that I love Escondidinho (on Facebook). My dad used to go when he was young, I go there sometimes, and probably my son will go too. Its a traditional lunchtime restaurant going since the 1940s and known for its beef ribs in broth, with fried cassava and watercress (32, serves two or more). The meat starts to fall off the bone before youve even picked up your knife and fork.
We have a culture of botecos, classic neighbourhood bars where you grab a beer and a snack say a pastel (a small meat or cheese pie) or a coxinha (chicken-and-cassava fritter). Theres a great one in Praa da Bandeira (in north Rio, very near the Maracan stadium, which will stage the Games opening ceremony) called Aconchego Carioca that does all our national dishes and snacks very well indeed.
Aconchego Carioca in Praa da Bandeira
A more rustic, classic boteco is Bar da Gema in Andara. They do fried polenta with oxtail stew on top (10), and you eat it with your hands. Its amazing. They also serve pastel de feijo gordo (1.50), little pies filled with feijoada black-bean stew, our national dish. They are so good I could eat about 10 of them.
Brazil isnt so strong on street food, but the Saturday morning farmers market in Jardim Botnico, on Rua Frei Leandro, opposite Olympe restaurant, does a great tapioca, a kind of cassava pancake. It serves up a version with cheese, tomato, onions and oregano, using a cheese called queijo minas meia-cura, whichmelts perfectly when it hits the griddle.
Bars and nightlife

Musically, Rio is incredibly rich its often music that gets people out at night. Monday is outdoor samba night at Pedra do Sal, in Largo Joo da Baiana, 10 minutes walk from the new Museum of Tomorrow (which is definitely worth a visit). Musicians go straight there to play after they get off work, from about 7pm. They play old-school, very traditional samba. Take a taxi if you dont know this area.

And on Wednesday nights at Praa Tiradentes theres a jazz scene in the middle of the square, just people hanging out and playing and listening to jazz. Its free. They just turn up and start playing, and if you get there at about 9pm, its generally in full swing. Cariocas are experts at making something happen out of nothing.
Praa So Salvador in Laranjeiras is another one: on Friday nights, the square gets packed with hundreds of people getting together in the open air, and guys selling beer from ice boxes. Everyone loves it.
Mixing is a kind of speakeasy in Rio Comprido, between Centro and Tijuca. During the day its a school of mixology, but on certain nights it transforms into a bar. Youd never guess it was there from the outside you go through a garage, up some stairs and along a corridor and there it is.
Traditionally, Rio has always been about caipirinhas and chope (light draft beer) but theres a growing cocktail culture. The challenge for Rio bartenders is to convince cariocas to go for drier, more complex drinks as they tend to veer towards sweetness. Bar DHotel, inside Marina All-Suites, has one of the best drinks menus in Rio; another is the new Bar Astor inside the Astor hotel, on the Ipanema seafront. Theyve brought high-level So Paulo-style mixology to Rio, which I love.
In Rio, music on the street is enough to get the party started. Photograph: Felipe Dana/AP
The new Atlntico Rio de Janeiro in Barra da Tijuca is one of the most Rio-spirited bars I can think of, though its owner isnt even Brazilian. Tato Giovannoni came from Buenos Aires, where he owns the bar Floreria Atlntico, and just did something different created a really good beach bar with amazing cocktails and fresh seafood.
He makes a dry martini with a tincture of sea salt, right there on the beach, and serves oysters at about 1 each. Theyre also doing a pop-up bar during the Olympics, at Clubhouse Rio.
For me, the best saideira (nightcap) is at Galeto Sats , open till late in Copacabana. Lots of bartenders and chefs go there after work for beer and grilled chicken. Its a tiny, old-fashioned joint where people spill on to the pavement. My order is a shot of good cachaa and a plate of grilled chicken hearts.
History and culture
Luiza Mello, art producer, Automatica, which produces the annual art event Travessias in the Complexo da Mar favela in north Rio

A place I love to take visitors is Instituto Moreira Salles. Its a wonderful example of modernist Brazilian architecture, with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx and a beautiful panel by Cndido Portinari, facing the pond. It was once the home of a very wealthy family, but today its a cultural institution with an impeccable programme they hold great exhibitions, plus theres a photo collection, a music collection and a photography magazine.
Parque Lage is always good another very beautiful place, home to the EAV School of Visual Arts, with an interesting gallery in the former stables, called Galeria das Cavalarias.

Culturally, Rios downtown area, Centro, just gets more and more interesting. There is a great area around Praa XV, with art galleries, cinema and theatre in the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil ; the former imperial palace Pao Imperial, which is one of the citys most historic buildings and now a cultural centre; and the Casa Frana-Brasil, a contemporary art space in Rios oldest neoclassical building. The Candelria and Carmo churches are also both worth seeing.

Centro has another cultural hub now: Porto Maravilha, Rios regenerated port district, with the MAR Museum of Art and theMuseum of Tomorrow. Close to that but less well-known is Cais do Valongo, the archaeological site of Rios former shipping wharf, where hundreds of thousands of the slaves brought to Brazil came ashore. Theres also the Galeria dos Pretos Novos, an art gallery, and part of a memorial complex on the site of an ancient slave cemetery.

Pedra do Sal is another historic site in the area, where there was once a quilombo, a community of former slaves and their descendants. Its just behind the MAR, and a very interesting place to visit.
Beaches and nature
Nicole Casares, blogger, Cariocando no Rio. She runs tours of some of her favourite places, booked via her site
Nicole Casares at Parque Lage. Photograph: Camila Neves
Rio is full of quiet spots from which to observe the citys curves, the contours of the hills and the green vegetation against the ocean. There are lovely parks, such as Parque Lage and the Jardim Botnico, and even the gigantic tropical rainforest, Floresta da Tijuca invades the city limits. Or just being in the sea is a peaceful experience.

If you only go to one beach, Id recommend Ipanema, at Posto 10 (postos are the beaches demarcation points and come every kilometre). Its one of the safest parts of the beach, and it attracts a lot of young, cool people. Theres a good place just across the road for lunch called Balada Mix, with great sandwiches and juices, including aai. Arpoador, a headland between Copacabana and Ipanema, is special too you have to see it at sunset, when people climb on to the rocks to look right down Ipanema beach to the sun setting behind the Dois Irmos peaks.
Surfers on Prainha beach, Barra da Tijuca. Photograph: Alamy
I also like the long beaches to the west: at Barra da Tijuca and also Praia da Joatinga, where the water is a beautiful green colour and there are no crowds. To reach it, you follow a steep trail down on to the sand. Some of Rios very best beaches are even further west, on the very edge of the city, like Praia do Secreto and Prainha.
Because of all the mountains dotted around, Rio must have the most spectacular views of any city in the world. My all-time favourite view is from Mirante Dona Marta. Its breathtaking you can see Sugarloaf Mountain below, with the sea all around it, the boats in Botafogo harbour and all the way across Guanabara Bay to Niteri. And in the other direction you can see Christ the Redeemer close up.
Rio must have the most spectacular views of any city in the world. This view is of Sao Conrado beach and the Rocinha favela. Photograph: Alamy
This unique topography means you can also hike and climb within the city. Of Rios best-known hikes, Dois Irmos is light to moderate, about 45 minutes climb from the top of Vidigal favela (which is safe to visit). You can take a van to the foot of the trail, or a motorbike taxi. Or inside Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Pedra Bonita is a nice, easy walk, about 40-45 minutes. Its steep, but if you take it slowly, its fine, and the view are similar to those from the top of Pedra da Gvea, which is a far harder climb.
One of my favourite, lesser-known trails is the Trilha do Morro da Babilnia. Its really easy only 30 or 40 minutes and has great views of Praia Vermelha beach and Po de Aucar. You start at Ladeira Ary Barroso in Leme, and walk up into Chapu Mangueira favela. Guides from Coop Babilnia, a residents cooperative, will take you up the trail for about 14. Its best to go early in the day, and make sure to be out of the community before evening.
