Huddling together for warmth + only one bed: 90/100, 86/100

The Phantomhive household are away from the manor, maybe staying at some kind of hotel because the townhouse isn’t an option here: it’s too far away to travel back and forth.

So they’re staying there and, as they are his staff, Ciel gets the servants rooms - far less nice than his own, and actually located on the ground floor, but still rooms to stay in. Just to inconvenience Sebastian, the little brat decides to put Bard and him in the same room.

Bard doesn’t care. Sebastian is mildly annoyed, because it means he has to pretend to sleep, now, instead of being productive.

But Bard and Sebastian aren’t expecting to get to the room, and find there’s only one bed. It’s not a huge, king sized one, but it is a double. When he asks Ciel (not mentioning the fact the room only has one bed, just asking what Ciel asked for, for them), he says he asked for a room for two people to stay in. So Ciel didn’t mean for it, but it happened. Great.

When the time inevitably comes for them to go to bed, Sebastian, at first, insists he can sleep on the floor. Bard, annoying as always, insists otherwise - he says he can sleep on the floor, making a joke about Sebastian’s supposed ‘dainty muscles’, or something. Sebastian says no, that he needs Bard tomorrow to be able to work and not have a terrible back.

Eventually, they just give up.

Sebastian silently sighs as he slips into bed, wearing only his trousers because that was acceptable enough to pass as sleepwear, mostly mad because he’s being forced to sit there for hours, when he could be doing something useful!

They lay down, backs facing each other, as far from each other as they can be without falling off the bed, and the night grows deeper. And so, so much colder.

Sebastian can’t die from the cold, but he is susceptible to a chill. And the room gets so deathly cold, it’s hard not to. Damn the terrible heating, he thinks.

He can feel himself shivering, a natural human reaction that only shows his excellent craftsmanship of this body. And he knows that Bard is shivering, too.

After a while of this, pressing his teeth together to stop them from clattering, he senses movement from behind him. It’s hesitant, and slow, but eventually Bard moves over into the bed a bit more. And then he presses against Sebastian’s back, both of them now shivering uncontrollably in the freezing cold.

It takes a while, but eventually Bard is effectively spooning him, and this is sort of awkward when he’s fully awake and nearly on the edge of the bed. But the small amount of warmth that they generate between them, just from this small touch, is enough to convince Sebastian that what he’s about to do is simply survival instinct, a way of staying warm in the cold, keeping the other servants safe so they can continue work and *nothing more*.

The next morning, they’re fully entangled. Bard is deeply asleep, his hair a mess, probably drool dripping down his chin - the disgusting human - and his (admittedly strong) arms are wrapped around Sebastian’s waist. Sebastian returns this, by hugging him around his shoulders, which is the easiest thing to reach because he’s taller than Bard. Neither of them were shivering anymore. They were actually pleasantly warm beneath the blanket.

When Bard does stir, he pretends to be asleep for a little while longer. Sebastian doesn’t point this out. He would be a hypocrite if he did, anyways, since he also held his eyes shut, and his breathing deep and rhythmic. It’s early enough to get away with this without a major time loss, anyways, so he lets himself indulge in the feel of the other man’s arms around his waist, the weight of his body against his own, and he doesn’t open his eyes even when he feels a finger stroke over his cheek - a way too intimate gesture for his superior.

They don’t discuss this later.

Personal notes:

(Huddling together for warmth) a personal favourite for sure. A non-sexual kind of intimacy that also benefits both of them? Sign me up!

(Only one bed) This trope is maybe a little overused, but for a good reason. I personally adore this, the awkwardness, the gradual acceptance etc. It’s so good!

Kuro Headcannons

Grelle likes to window shop a lot so William often has to drag her away from the shops so they can get work done.

Sebastian absolutely hates Grelle but he secretly enjoys fighting her because of how skilled she is.

o!Ciel really likes nature and would like to have more plants around the manor but he doesn't say anything because he knows they won't survive long because of the disaster trio.

Mey-Rin, Bardroy and Finny all think o!Ciel is adorable and sometimes gush over something he did/said. They fear the day he catches them doing it.

Sebastian sometimes often purposefully tells o!Ciel something last minute just to annoy him.

Grelle sometimes chews on her hair when she's zoning out. William or Ronald stop her from doing it when they notice.

Sebastian prefers baking over cooking.

Sebastian and Bards relationship in the cannon is not talked about enough.

Not to sound pretentious, but I feel like it may be more accurate to say their dynamic in the context of the series.

The simplistic caveman side of my brain wants to say that they’re just two dudes, which isn’t wrong. But the analytical side of my brain wishes to elaborate 🤗.

Behold my tangent.

One of my favorite lines in this series is when Sebastian tells Bard quote “You fear death, as humans should. You must be the only one in this manor who does.”

(The fact that it pans to Ciel is just 👌👌👌. Good shit, love to see it.)

To me, Bards backstory segments where we saw him adjusting to life in the manor had a different feel to when we saw the same for Mayrin. We got to see her interact with oCiel, Finny, Nina, and even Lau briefly. But with Bard, he was only ever really shown with Sebastian. Or at least mainly.

There’s a stronger sense that Bard doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the household. Which I felt was emphasized by this panel.

I interpret this as him saying “what the hell am I doing in the house full of crazy kids.”

Which leads me back to my main point. Basically, Bard is the most normal human in this house. And who is he paired up with the most? Debatably the least normal “human” in the house.

Except I bet that’s not how Bard sees it. While Ciel may be the master of the house, Bard and Sebastian are the adults of the household. The men of the house if you will. (Yeah yeah Mayrin and Tanaka are adults too. But in Mayrin’s case b/c of her time as a snipper she hadn’t lived as much of a life as Bard, so she’s not quite at the same level of maturity. And I’m going to ignore Tanaka since he’s less of an active player among the servants.)

I’m trying so hard to break down my thought process rn :’) OK, because of this, I bet that Bard views Sebastian as sort of like his bro. They have this shared responsibility to take care of the ‘kids’ in the house. (Take a shot every time I say house).

Honestly idk where I’m going with this. Sebastian is like the strict mother who expects highly of the servants. While Bard is the bad influence uncle that endorses smoking, drinking, and pornography.

They have a weird partnership, one that boarders on a one sided friendship. They both have an unspoken understanding that they share the responsibility of adults looking after children. Only for Bard to then be put back in his place by Sebastian, as HE probably views Bard as just another one of the kids he has to manage.

I swear I had a point, I don’t think I conveyed it properly. Anyway, sorry for the long post. I honestly love Bard as a character, he’s very interesting when you really start to think about it. He doesn’t get enough recognition from the fan base esp when it comes to analytical perspectives.
