The garden at Darkwood had always been Marie's safe place. During the hours of daylight, that is. Nighttime being something altogether different. Barbara had been only too happy to give her daughter the freedom she so obviously craved, leaving her to run wild as long as she kept within the borders of the plot.
It made sense then that it was out on that same grass beneath the aluminium sky where Marie chose to be in order to quieten the noise of the last few weeks. She leaned back, tasting the air. If she was lucky the rain might hold off until lunchtime. Though an earthy aroma and cool breeze said otherwise.
She set up the old easel of hers that her mother had never gotten around to leaving out with the bins, taped a fresh sheet of paper to the board, squeezed out blue and green and a little burnt umber from their metal tubes onto a makeshift ice-cream lid palette, and looked around for an area of the garden that might capture well on the page.
If she blurred her vision she could trick herself into believing she saw the outline of her father mowing the lawn, or raking up leaves, pulling up dandelions, roots and all. He was still here in many ways. Though Marie knew the snapshots she held in her mind were no longer true memories. They were memories of memories, facsimiles, images sent through the machine of her brain so many times it was impossible to tell if she was remembering events that occurred, or was manifesting images from a photo album, projecting them as if they'd happened in front of her own eyes.
She dabbed the brush in the paint, no plan in mind, just pent up feelings itching to get out. God knew the gallery wasn't chasing her for fresh work. Not after the last time, what with Shaun's outburst at the opening and everything that came after. So she followed where the paint took her, swirling greens into browns and blues into reds, allowing the brush to dictate style and content, and it felt good not to be invested, to not try so hard to control the outcome.
The first time Marie saw Father Colin that day the vicar was by himself, sauntering along the road in a direction that took him away from the village. From her vantage point, looking up the slight slope of the garden, she could see about a ten yard stretch of the dry stone wall, the boundary between Darkwood and the road out front. Anything to the left of that was blocked out by the cottage itself.
The young man didn't appear to notice her, then, and she certainly didn't make a point of drawing attention to herself, preferring instead to let him drift by, like a black swan, silent and serene. It was only when he walked out of view that she realised she'd been holding her breath.
The second time she saw him, he was heading back the other way. Only this time he was flanked by two of the volunteer ladies, Edith or Agnes or whatever the hell they were called. They walked - no, glided - as one, as if coasting on greased rails or floating six inches off the ground.
Despite herself, Marie was mesmerised by them, the way they moved past the property, not speaking to each other. She watched until a nearby cow let out a startled grunt and caused the drifting group to turn simultaneously.
Father Colin, on seeing Marie sat by her easel, paused the unusual procession and acknowledged her with a smile and a gesture that was somewhere between a wave and a salute. 'Ms. Fisher,' he called out. 'Good day to you.'
The volunteer ladies said nothing, did nothing except stand steadfastly at either side of the young clergyman. From this distance they seemed oddly vacant, though they were most definitely looking right at her. In that moment it occurred to Marie that looking and seeing weren't necessarily the same thing.
'Hello again, Father,' she said.
Her skin tingled as tiny spots of rain began to land on her face, her forearms, and on the painting in front of her. Not enough to cause damage or streaks. Still, for more reasons than she could articulate it felt like the right time to go inside.
'Any danger of a cup of tea, Ms Fisher?' the vicar said
Marie begin packing up her paints. 'Can't I'm afraid,' she said.
She peeled the paper off the board, rolled it up and balanced it on top of the box of acrylics and pack of brushes. As inexplicable as it was, she didn't want him in her house. 'A friend's popping over in a bit. Need to get cleaned up, you know how it is. Another time, perhaps.' She made a point of making it not sound like a question.
The vicar and his two lady friends swivelled their heads in unison to follow Marie as she navigated her way quickly across the garden, laden with art supplies, and the folded down easel carried awkwardly under her arm.
'Oh yes?' Father Colin said, so so calmly. 'Which friend? You know only a few people as I understand it.'
Marie stopped at the edge of the cottage, at the point where, if she'd continued on, her view of the road and the unsettling visitors would be lost. Was that a dig? Was Father Colin mocking her? He certainly seemed to be doing his darndest to suppress a smirk. Game show host, was all she could think.
Just then, the sound of an old telephone rang out through the back door: a lifeline, a distraction that bought her a second or two to think.
'Hubert,' she said after a beat, with all the breezy confidence she could muster. 'He's lending me a few tools from his shed so I can get started on taming this jungle.' She jabbed a thumb over her shoulder toward the garden and its mess of summer growth. As lies went it wasn't too unreasonable.
'Ah, Hubert,' the vicar said. 'Hubert, Hubert, Hubert.'
From inside the cottage the phone continued its rattling cry.
Drrrring.
What began as occasional spits and spots had rapidly turned to a persistent drizzle. Still, Marie and the vicar, with his two volunteer helpers, all stood looking at each other from opposing sides of the wall, as fixed and unmoving as the wall itself. Chess pieces awaiting a turn.
Drrrring.
'I'd better get that,' Marie said.
'Yes.' Neither Father Colin nor the volunteers showed any signs of walking on. 'You'd better get that.'
Then, as if the spell was suddenly broken, Marie drew her eyes away and walked briskly to the back door. 'Goodbye, Father,' she said, not looking back.
Inside the kitchen, she elbowed the door closed behind her. She dumped the easel down. But before she could place the other art supplies on the counter, her shaking hands failed and sent them clattering across the tile floor.
'Fucking fuck,' she muttered between panicked breaths. She locked the door, trying not to feel stupid about doing it.
Drrrring.
The phone continued to ring on the table. It would've gone to voicemail long before Marie had gotten to it if she hadn't disabled the function since returning to Darkwood. The same message showed on the screen as before: 'Caller unknown'. She answered it anyhow.
'Hello?' she said.
A pause.
'Hi.' Shaun's voice was hesitant. Not like him at all.
Marie looked around the kitchen, unsure what to say. She scratched at a mark on the table, a knot in the wood, then closed her eyes and concentrated on calming her heart rate to something close to normal.
'Marie? Are you there?'
'Yes, I'm here. Where are you calling from, Shaun? I don't see a number.'
'I'm at work. Halfway through a meeting with the Ratcliffe guys. I popped out to call you. Said I needed a piss. Just wanted to see if you were okay after, you know, everything.'
Marie nodded. Not that Shaun could see it. It was more a self-soothing motion, as if to say, Yes, Shaun. I know. Everything.
'How are you? How's the house?'
'It's a house.' Marie didn't like the tone in her own voice but declined to go back and correct herself. Let him worry. Let him think she was still mad at him, even though the truth was she didn't have the energy to be angry at anyone, and had barely given their broken relationship a thought since the funeral.
'And you? How are you? In yourself, I mean.'
'I'm fine. Why are you calling, Shaun?'
'I wanted to check-'
'Sure. Great. You checked and like I said, I'm fine. But I could do without the barrage of calls.'
'Barrage of what?'
'Calls, Shaun. Just so you know, if you ring me again from an unknown number I won't be answering. In fact, if you call me from a known number I won't be answering.'
'That's...yeah...okay, Marie. Okay.' He sounded flustered. Confused, even. 'I get it. But I didn't think it was a crime to see how you were getting on. It's been two weeks.'
Marie looked up at the ceiling in disbelief, slowly shaking her head. She said nothing.
'You make it sound like I've been harassing you or something. Christ, Marie, this is me - me - not some random guy. You wanted space. I gave you space. You want me to leave you alone from now on? I'll leave you alone. Just don't make me out to be the fucking weirdo just 'cause I still care about you.'
'Space?' She let out a howl. 'Every day you've called, Shaun. Every bloody day.'
Before Shaun could defend himself against the accusation, the phone buzzed against Marie's ear, making her pull it away from the side of her head. She looked down at the screen to see the same 'caller unknown' message.
But there was something else. With each buzz the house seemed to vibrate, as if another phone, upstairs perhaps, a device perfectly in sync with this one, was ringing at exactly the same time.
'I have to go,' she said, hanging up, to the sound of Shaun saying something but being cut off mid sentence. Then she answered the new incoming call.
'Hello?'
There came a sound down the line, a raw and messy sound, like static. It must've been a broken connection, an error of some kind.
'Hello?' Marie said again.
More static.
Then, clear and sweet-sounding, yet somehow distant, words were spoken in her ear. 'By your hand,' they said. 'Do not falter.' After which the line went dead.
She looked at the blank screen, thought about the words: By your hand. Do not falter. But they held no meaning. A crossed line. A glitch, nothing more.
Suddenly the phone felt like an alien thing, a doorway for those she didn't want to let in. She held the side button and watched it power off, then half dropped, half threw the phone on the table where, she decided, it would stay untouched for the next few days.
A little over an hour later, Marie was summoning up the will to go through one of her mother's boxes from under the bed when she was halted by a knock at the front door. She was halfway down the stairs when she saw Hubert through the glass panel. When he caught sight of her, he smiled.
She was about to turn the key in the lock and find out the reason for this unexpected visit, but something - maybe instinct or an abundance of caution - made her hand pause.
'Hey, Hubert. Just give me a minute. This door jams sometimes.' She rattled the handle pretending to try the lock, and then glanced up at the older man, looking him in the eyes.
'Hiya, love,' he said, so so calmly. 'Got those tools for you in the car.'

Because it was wet i didnt get to enjoy the chassis of my new bike cause i couldn't pilot like a maniac but i did get some jumps on it and tuned the saddle. Tuens out if the saddle is too far back on rails then the handlebars feel not ideal position but i put saddle fairly centre and bars feel good now. Also tightened it cause the alt brsinwave girl didnt lol and i coukd move it wuth my hands. Works a charm at the bike post diy thingo.
The tyres are actually okay enough for wet. Not to do anything silly or extreme angles but still but they kick up water onto my bum in the rear when going fast so might need el cheapo black rear mudguard in future lol. Tyres sre super sketch in skatepark wet just put the rear brake and you spin a full 180 almost but this was when it just stsrtef raining and not near half wet lol. Nice sound tho. Full wet would be a nightmare at skatepark lol. The ground there is too smooth. Only one sketch old man who came and played with his dog in a increasingly wet skatepark raining. No leash i have no idea how he got closer and closer. Im like yeah im out. Not about to get my bike stolen by a middle aged fella who looked chill but had an off leash dog and was playing in the rain close to me for a reason.
I think I have to spend more time in the dry cause then the bike comes alive with all this grip and the rock solid chassis. Looked at rear chainstays therez a sizeable fingerprint sized ding there where paint is completely off. It looked a bit sketch i didnt notice it on the kona frame when i initally bought it but only now lol but since i dont think brainwave would sell broken frames they said they binn those. Recycling... Bit worried since its aluminium not steel but rides comfortably almost like steel. Anywho i do have a full month to exchange it for another bike but not gonna once i get to ride it in the day itll be revealled how fun it really is just like when i test rode it! Now all i can think of is to wipe down the seat do i have to wipe the discs or anything brake relsted? Ill check

If the six-foot wide surface is insufficient, side extensions for an additional 30 cm x 70 cm can be added on each side of the desk, with optional hanging pegboards. With adapters for Elgato Multi-connect and Flex Arm products to connect Key Lights, cameras, or microphones directly to the rail system, the Platform:6-exclusive Elgato Multi Frame top-mounted pegboard provides even more mounting spots to organise your gear and accessories. The premium Platform:6 Creator Edition comes with the Elgato Multi Frame extension, which also offers adjustable height and a rubberwood surface. When the Platform:6 is formally launched, custom configurations may be created and purchased via the online configurator.
Watch for the Platform:6's formal introduction later this year to learn how its special features and design ethos may raise your workstation to a higher standard.

Google Continues its Mid-range Dominance with the Pixel 7a
The mid-range smartphone market is in a never-ending state of competition - you have a ton of brands and manufacturers each offering their own budget-friendly handsets, although these sometimes come with some compromises in terms of performance, camera, or build quality. With that in mind, Google has constantly tried its hand with mid-range Android phones, gaining relative success with the likes of the Pixel 3a, 4a, and last year's Pixel 6a. While it's not perfect, Google's new Pixel 7a aims to provide users with some compelling features to make their purchase worthwhile. Priced at £449 for buyers in the UK, the 7a features some notable upgrades from its predecessor, and brings it closer (in terms of specifications, at least) to the base-model Pixel 7, which was launched last year. One thing that stands out the most with the new A-model is that it borrows a lot of design aesthetics from the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, such as the new metallic camera bar that replaces the all-black visor from the Pixel 6a. The phone also drops the thin plastic frame between the display and aluminium side rails, instead opting for a cleaner design around the frame of the phone. There's Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the front, while the rest of the rear panel features a plastic design, not unlike the one found on the 6a. The Pixel 7a also comes in four different colour variants this year, including your standard black and white versions, with the addition of new "Sea" and "Coral" colours, the latter of which is available exclusively on Google's online store. The display has received a slight performance boost this year - while it retains a compact 6.1-inch size like the 6a, the 7a's OLED panel now features a 90Hz refresh rate, which will make for a smoother user experience. It's something that fans have been clamouring for, especially given that competing devices from brands like Xiaomi feature high refresh rates at much lower prices. It also houses an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometrics. Inside the phone is Google's Tensor G2 chip, paired with the company's Titan M2 chip for protection. This is backed by 8GB of RAM - another boost for performance - and 128GB of internal storage. The phone comes with a moderately-sized 4385 mAh battery, although it charges at a pretty slow 18W speed. One advantage though is that the phone will now support wireless charging, but again, don't expect stellar charging speeds. As with every Pixel phone, the highlight of the 7a is the camera setup, which now comes with a 64MP main lens with ƒ/1.89 aperture, paired with a 13 MP ultrawide camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture. The Pixel 7a will come with a lot of the camera features found on the flagship 7 series, including Astrophotography, Portrait mode, Real tone, and photo Unblur to name a few. Meanwhile, users can record video on the main camera with up to 4K resolution and either 60 or 30fps. Selfies and video calls are handled by a 13MP camera on the front display, which also doubles for Face unlock functionality. The Pixel 7a is available now for £449, with a free bundle of Pixel Buds A-series. Read the full article

Modern Kitchen Design Ideas For Small Modern Kitchens
If you have a small modern kitchen, you should consider the modern black color palette. It is ideal for a small space and looks great with the concrete floor. Modern black kitchen cabinets with wood tops create a warm frame for gray quartz countertops and black backsplash. The thin gray quartz countertop also continues into the kitchen island. For additional accent, consider hanging black pendant lights over the island. The contrast of the black pendant lights with the black backsplash and countertop creates a beautiful symmetry.
Simple design
One of the most stylish and simple design ideas for a modern kitchen is the combination of white and wood. White cabinetry with a white quartz countertop and white marble backsplash visually expand the room and create an open feel. This kitchen also features an island with black barstools, a wooden floor, and black fixtures. This design is ideal for small kitchens.
Handle-free cabinets
Handle-free cabinets are a great choice for a modern small kitchen. These cabinets lack handles, but have an integrated rail that allows you to open and close them. The recessed rail is usually painted the same color as the fronts of the cabinets, but can also come in a plain aluminium finish. Handle-free cabinets can protect your family from bumping into each other and promoting a relaxed cooking experience.
Brushed stainless steel countertops
Brushed stainless steel countertops are a great option for small modern kitchens. They are available in a variety of styles and colors, and will enhance any space. You can find these countertops at home improvement stores or from a metal vendor. When ordering them, you will need a template to work from. It is easy to make a template from plywood, which is the cheapest material for this purpose. Once cut to size, you can paint the plywood a silver gray color to simulate stainless steel.
High-top table
If you have a small modern kitchen with limited space, you may want to consider investing in a small rectangular table with stools. These small tables are ideal for narrow spaces and add a rustic element to any room. These tables can easily be converted into a serving table when needed.
Dual-toned walls
If you’re looking for a modern kitchen design with a bold color scheme, you can’t go wrong with a dual-toned kitchen. The two-toned walls are an easy way to bring a splash of color without taking up a lot of space. Whether you have a small kitchen or a large one, dual-toned walls are an excellent option.
Large windows
A small modern kitchen can be a great space to showcase large windows. In this kitchen, a large window provides natural light and creates an open space that is visually exciting. The white shaker cabinets and solid surface countertops complement each other nicely. The backsplash is a grey color that reflects light to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen. In this kitchen, a large window accentuates the kitchen island, which adds a visual interest.
Modular design
A German designer has created a unique concept for small kitchens that incorporates a modular system for installation. In collaboration with kitchen accessories support company Naber, the design offers excellent functionality and a stylish aesthetic. The modular system allows you to customize the size and design of your kitchen to fit the layout of your space. The white color of the design creates a feeling of spaciousness in a small room while the open shelving provides ample storage space.
Dual-purpose table
Adding a dual-purpose table to a small modern kitchen can add storage and extra seating. These tables come with storage compartments and shelves in the base for utensils and dishes. They also come with a variety of color options and can be sized down without charge. Some of these tables even include an ottoman chair for added storage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which color goes best in a white kitchen
A white kitchen can look great in various colours, but walnut is a good match. The space will feel warm and inviting thanks to its natural wood tones. These two colors will complement each others well. Black and grey can be a great choice if your preference is for something more subtle. If you’re looking to make a bold statement, choose a bright color like yellow or red. Whichever way you go, make sure your decor fits in with the style.
What makes a timeless backsplash for a kitchen?
A subway tile backsplash will always be timeless. We do, however, recommend a full-height backsplash for your kitchen. This would be the countertop being used as a backsplash that extends to the bottom of the upper cabinets. This creates the illusion that your kitchen is larger.
What are the steps to remodelling a kitchen?
Plan your kitchen remodeling. Decide what to change and how much to spend.
Locate a contractor. Get bids from several contractors and choose the one you feel most comfortable with.
Demolition. This is the fun bit! You can remove the countertops and appliances.
Installation. Installation. The contractor will install the cabinets, countertops, or appliances as per your specifications.
Final touches. Add some finishing touches like paint or new hardware, and your kitchen remodel will be complete!

Ten small kitchen renovations you can do yourself.
Ideas for small kitchen renovations you can do yourself. DIY Home Improvement Tips For the Average Joe
You might not want to undertake a small kitchen renovation. You can make your home feel brand new by doing this. There are many things you can do to improve your kitchen that don’t cost too much. Here are some ideas for small kitchen renovations that you can do by yourself.
Add a backsplash to your kitchen – If there are no tiles around the sink or countertop, then a backsplash will be the best option. It can be used to add colour and style, as well as make your kitchen seem larger and cleaner.
Get rid of old cabinets. They can protect your walls against spills and splashes. They also give your kitchen a sophisticated look. You should replace your cabinet doors if they look tired.
Paint your kitchen – Paint will not only change the appearance of your kitchen but also help you save money. It gives your kitchen a modern look and gives it new life. Plus, it’ll be easier to clean as well.
You should update your appliances. This will not only increase their longevity but also make them appear newer. If you’re certain which appliance you want to update, you can go ahead and do it. Otherwise, you can ask someone who knows how to install these appliances.
Add a counter – A bar area is another option. This not only gives you more work surface, but it also allows for entertaining guests.
Create a breakfastnook – A breakfastnook doesn’t require you to spend a lot of money. All you need is a small dining table and some chairs. You can even add some cushions to make it more comfortable.
A pantry is an essential part of any kitchen. It’s an excellent place to store food, meals, and other household items.
Install an island. This gives your kitchen an open feel and allows you to work from a large area. It can be paired with wood flooring to make it look even more attractive.
A wine rack can be added to any home. You can also use them at home. They come in different designs and sizes. You can choose whatever suits your kitchen best.

Oh no, i feel my hand slipping
🌄
Slamming the door shut after him and groaning heavily, Eddie slumps at the second stair to his uncle's trailer and leans back with his eyes closed.
It's been a tight month, even more than usually. He is pretty much out of money, out of patience for the school, and out of ideas how to finish the song he's been brainstorming over for the last week. Also, Eddie is freshly out of cigarettes and his uncle just left for the night shift, taking the car with him, which means half an hour walk to the gas station - the only open business at this time of the day - something Eddie just doesn't have energy for.
And sure, he could have just got into his own weed stash and continue the evening with more smoke in his lungs and less swirling thoughts in his head, but that would mean having less wares to sell and less money for gass and groceries later in the week. So when the frustration of it all gets too unbearable and the call of those sweet sweet joints starts to sound way too alluring, he decides that a change of scenery is in order.
Granted, it wasn't much of a change space-wise - slumping and groaning against the fridge or doing pretty much the same thing with his head on the top of concrete stairs leading to his place - but still.
Without even looking at the bag of sunflower seeds, the last snack of any kind left in the trailer, he rips it open and let's the crinkly corner flutter to the ground.
If Waine saw him, he would sigh and tell Eddie to pick it up, but the thing is, that the trailer park is always full of trash. People don't have strict lines and fences between one another's properties, there aren't any decorative bushes or raised flower beds to break the wind or to clearly distinguish between who is actually littering and who is just in the unfortunate spot that happens to be the final destination of all those chewing gum wrappers and used napkins. On windy days, discarded pages of old news papers and other things racoons digged out out of communal trash cans just fly around freely like tumbleweed, spilling food crumbles and little bits of aluminium foil all over the place.
Eddie personally doesn't give a shit about any of those things. He used to, back when he first came to Hawkings, but it was taking too big of a toll on his sanity. Eventually he learned to accept it as a part of the local scenery and just moved on. It was either that or surrending to angry fits full of tears and hatred towards himself, his father, the world in general, and the unfairness of it all that has led him to this backwater shithole of a place. These days however, Eddie knows better and cares less about things that are out of his control.
And he's not the only one who learned to live in a place where fifty percent of dirt is made of soggy paper pulp and cigarette butts. Birds, especially crows and ravens, seemed to flourish in this kind of environment. They alway hang around waiting for another pizza box to find its way to the ground, feasting on pieces of cheese and mushrooms stuck to the lid.
Eddie spits out chewed shells and watches absendmindedly as the flock crowds around a spot some twenty feet away from his trailer.
There must be something especially juicy there, maybe a puddle of puke or a dead squirrel, because all those birds are being unusually loud. Hard to tell which it is though, because all he can really see is a boiling ball of black and grey feathers. That and a handful of smaller magpies that got bullied out of the murder, just hanging around in a respectful distance from other bigger and more agressive birds, looking all sad and hungry.
"What a familiar picture," Eddie snorts and throws another handful of seeds into his mouth, reveling in the salty burn on his tongue.
"Not your lucky day either, huh?"
He spits more shells in an arch over the shabby railing just for the fun of it. Magpies, obviously, don't give a shit about his antics.
That is, all of them except for one.
The bird that turns around and hops closer to the Munson's trailer is a smaller one. Some of its feathers are short or outright missing, giving the bird a shabby appearance. It has random patches of fluff sticking out at weird angles between its wings and from the side of its chest. The poor creature looks very much the same way how Eddie feels and he hates it. Why does everything have to look like some sort of a sarcastic metaphore of his miserable life exactly when he wants to just brood in peace? Can't it just start raining or something instead?
"What?" He barks, making the bird jump.
"Gagagagaga!" Barks the magpie, twitching its head up and down as it looks at Eddie with one of its beady eyes.
"Shoo, you sky rat," sulks the metalhead, flicking a sunflower seed at it, only to miss by a good foot or two.
Instead of scampering away, the bird jumps forward. It picks the seed up, cracks the shell open, and swallows its content. When for few seconds nothing else happens, the magpie opens its beak and barks again.
"Gagaga!"
Not being in a mood to deal with anything, least of all to argue with stupid wildlife, Eddie angrily flings a handful of seeds at the bird. They fall like a rain all over the space where Waine usually parks his pickup, making the magpie jump.
But the moment the bird realizes that nothing else is comming, it starts hopping around in search of food it has just been gifted so generously.
In the background, the murder is still screaming as two biggest birds play a tug-o-war with a piece of bone. So a roadkill then.
Eddie groans and lets his head fall back onto the concrete. It's getting dark and he can hear random cracks and snaps as mosquitoes and other insects get electrocuted by the blue lamp hanging by their neighbour's doors. Someone somewhere in the trailer park is singing along with the radio. Someone else is whistling at their dog, putting a bowl of kibble for dinner on the wooden porch. The magpie by his feet cracks open another seed. Crickets buzz.
All Eddie wants to do is to fall apart into thousands of little pieces carried away by the late spring breeze and just to cease to exist.
🌌
When he wakes up from his accidental little nap, it's late at night. Eddie's back aches from the middle stair digging right into his spine for who knows how long, and his feet and ass are freezing.
Shakily, he manages to stand up and to stumble into his room. He doesn't remember taking his shoes off or climbing under the blanket.
Crickets keep buzzing.
☀️
The next morning, Waine returns with a loud sneeze that startles his nephew awake. They move around each other in a familiar groggy dance of microwaved fried leftovers and instant coffee, one trying to prepare himself for the day to come, another winding himself down for sleep.
One quick stop in the bathroom and the usual chaotic notebooks packing later, Eddie exits the trailer, only to find himself face to face with his friend from yesterday.
"Gagagaga!" The shabby magpie shrieks from the roof of Waine's car, blinking its big brown eye at Eddie. Surprised, he takes a step back.
"What the fuck?"
"Gaga!" The bird barks again, gliding to the ground next to an empty bag from Eddie's yesterday's snack. When the boy doesn't seem to get the message, the magpie lifts the colourful foil and jerks it into the air.
"GAGAGAGAGAGAGA!" It yells.
"Jesus H Christ, dude," Eddie cringes, as he walks to open the pickup, "calm the fuck down."
The bird flutters up at the hood and stares at the metalhead through car's smudgy wind shield.
Eddie swears as he starts the engine, stabbing the animal with his eyes, willing it to leave. When the magpie doesn't even flinch as car's gears loudly rattle into the reverse, Eddie clicks his tongue and makes a mental note to add a pack of nuts to his next grocery list.
I see so many posts about Eddie being a cat dad but I can't stop imagining him with a bird. He'd found it abandoned and sick as a baby and nursed it back to health, but when he tried to release him, he just kept coming back to Eddie. The third time the bird came back, Eddie sighed and shook his head. "Guess I'm a teen dad." They've been inseparable since. Everywhere he goes, the bird goes along with him; completely content to sit on his shoulder and peck at his shiny earrings.
During hellfire, he sits on a perch next to Eddie and is dubbed 'Dungeon Master in training'. Whenever Eddie wants to annoy the kids, he leans over to whisper to the bird and says it was his bird's idea to introduce the dragon that kills Dustin's character.
The bird doesn't like Steve. He pecks at Steve's fingers and screeches rather loudly whenever Steve tries to lean in and kiss Eddie. Sometimes, he will let Steve pet him, giving him false hope that they've become friends before the bird proceeds to chase Steve around his own house while Eddie cackles. "I think he's starting to like you."
The only other person the bird likes is Wayne. He likes to sit perched on Wayne's shoulder while the older man drinks a beer and watches whatever sport he's into at that moment. Wayne refuses to call the bird his grandson, but that doesn't stop him from spoiling the little thing rotten.

Whumptober 2022 day 25
Lost Voice | Duct Tape | “You better start talking.”
I CAUGHT UP!!
Another suggestion from @stripedroseandsketchpads thank you Kay!! ‘3rd one re: getting caught in GoK (arrest at the end maybe?)’
CW: period typical journalistic homophobia and scaremongering about AIDS. References to terrorism, bigotry and racism as well as mob violence (very vaguely alluded to). Good old fashioned fisticuffs :’)
---
Francis Crawford was sitting outside Kings Cafe in the bright grey light of a crisp autumn day in Glasgow. He wore his customary shades and long-mouthed scowl, and his knee jogged impatiently. He ignored the glances of theatre kids and uni students slipping into the cafe for post-lecture brunches. If any of them were brave enough to pause and address him -
"'Scuse me, man, are ye Lymond?"
"When's the new album out, pal?"
"Wouldya sign this serviette fer me? Reckon I could get a few bob fer it down at Barras market..."
- he simply stared back in silence until the sight of their own pimply faces in his reflective lenses disconcerted them and sent them scuttling away. No one complained about this treatment: he was wearing the kind of folded and studded leather jacket that could conceal any number of things in its pockets, and his fist was curled tightly on the unevenly settled aluminium table. The scars on his knuckles shone white beneath the rumour of sunlight and the tabloids were still full of speculation about all the horrors he might have participated in during his time in New York.
Will Scott took all this in with a knowing sneer as he loped along Elmbank Street, a copy of today's paper and a cassette player tucked under his arm.
Lymond thought he was untouchable, the callous bastard. On the anniversary of his little sister's death he was sitting there, waiting for his bandmates to answer his summons, focussed only on how much money he could squeeze out of their next album.
Will had had enough of it.
He stopped by the table and stood deliberately between Francis and the hazy spot of cloud the sun was pushing at. In the mirror of Francis' sunglasses he was a curving beanpole of a man, like some kids' TV character: blue jeans, black leather, shock of red curls.
"Fair fa' ye, boss," Will said with a smirk of anticipation.
Francis' pale brows where hidden behind the rims of his aviators and his expression didn't change. He just nodded and gestured to the other seat.
"Actually," Will grinned, drawing a deep and satisfying breath of cafe air - it smelled of bean sauce, weak tea, and suet. "I told Mat tae meet us over at Blythswood. It's nicer being in the park - I can play ye the new demo without the traffic." Will gestured to the cassette player under his arm.
Francis looked up at him - Will assumed he did by the angle of his chin, anyway - and Will wondered whether he was going to be obstreperous.
Instead, Francis shrugged. "Go and get your tea to take away, then..." he said impatiently.
Will did so, and when he emerged saw that Francis was standing in anticipation of him, pacing a little and kicking at the cigarette butts on the pavement.
He was really craving a smoke, Will saw, and he was pleased to think the treacherous arsehole was suffering. "C'mon! Don't wanna keep Turkey waiting..." Will elbowed him in the arm and strode off at a clip towards Blythswood.
Francis traipsed along after him, moodily silent until they reached the side streets. Then, to Will's discomfort, he began to chat about the album and how he envisaged the material coming together. He sounded genuinely interested in hearing the demo Will claimed to have brought, and Will clenched his jaw and reminded himself what fun it would be instead to see Francis' expression when he realised Will had rooted out the truth of his past.
They wandered around the edge of Blythswood Square gardens, circling the railings until they were at a sheltered spot under a drooping cherry tree. Francis pulled himself up and over the iron barrier easily and then held his hands out to take the tea, the cassette player and the paper Will was holding.
Will passed them to him and lifted his own leg to brace against the stump of a branch pushing through the rails. He hauled himself up and over without impaling himself - it was perhaps the smoothest he'd ever managed the manoeuvre of trespassing into the private gardens, and he straightened with a smirk, imagining that Francis might have some grudgingly impressed witticism to share.
Instead, Francis was frowning at the pages of the paper Will had brought.
Damnit, did he have no self-restraint? Will thought, checking his watch as a new worry occurred to him. He needed to keep Francis here until the fuzz arrived - he didn't want Francis getting his suspicions up early and making a run for it.
"What's up? Worried your hero's sold out?" Will tittered, thinking of the headline about Sinn Féin's recent electoral success and grabbing his tea back,
Francis looked up at him sharply. He'd pushed his sunglasses back so they rested among the ash blond waves of his hair. They stood in the shade of late autumn colour, where the air was still cool from a light morning frost, and a single, deep line scored the pale skin between Francis' brows as he fixed Will with his stare.
"Did you read this?" he asked softly.
Will, who had skimmed the front page - but taken Dandy Hunter's word at face value that the damning report on Francis' collusion with terrorists would be included - shook his head and smiled innocently. "No?"
Francis looked him over slowly and then turned the paper towards him.
Will folded the sheets messily - they flapped and fought him at every step, and he wished Dandy didn't have to be pretentious enough to write for one of the few remaining broadsheets.
He looked for the pseudonymous diary column, but instead his eyes fell on a hateful little piece at the bottom of the page.
Chart Topping Drummer Potential 'Typhoid Mary' in Gay Plague Spread
Next to the article was a picture of Turkey Mat, sweaty and happy after a gig, his thick arm slung round Francis Crawford's shoulder. Francis was wearing one of his more fey outfits, something lacy and flouncy, and his smile could only be described as Puckish. To his side stood one of the famous drag stars from the Ostrich in full stage make-up. The middle finger she was giving the camera had been censored out with a black box. Another, smaller image, showed Francis sharing a microphone cheek to cheek with a second guitarist; a man. The photo was apparently taken in New York, at a club called Three Cheers.
Will's eyes ran back and forth over the text but he couldn't really take it in. It was full of lies anyway - Mat wasn't gay (at least, Will had never heard him express interest in anyone of any gender), he'd probably been infected when he was using drugs, or working with addicts, and in any case he hadn't known he was a carrier of the virus when he'd left New York, so Francis hadn't been part of any campaign to 'smuggle' AIDS into the country, as the newspaper came perilously close to claiming. It was a sensationalised, racist, and deeply homophobic distraction from the real story Will had approached Dandy with, which was the issue of Francis and the IRA weapons.
"What the fuck is this...?" Will muttered, shaking his head.
Francis was looking at him strangely. He'd gone quite pale - paler than normal - and there were lines of worry around his remarkable eyes that Will hadn't really appreciated before.
"Did you speak to Mat this morning?" his voice was still unsettlingly gentle, filled with concern for the toothless oaf of a drummer he'd picked up in some skeevy punk club.
"What? I, no," Will said defensively.
Francis blinked. "When you told him to meet us here and not the cafe?"
"Oh! Oh, yeah."
"He didn't mention this?"
"Probably hadna seen it. I don't imagine he's a subscriber to the broadsheets," Will chuckled nervously.
Francis looked nauseated. He didn't contradict Will, but he shook his head and gazed out past the topiary shrubs to the main part of the garden. He plucked the paper from Will's fingers and folded it up. The he took the cassette player from under his arm instead. "Shall we have a listen to this demo, then?"
"Here?" Will asked.
"We are, after all, in Blythswood Square."
"Aye, but how will Mat see us here in the hedgerow?" Will scoffed. "There's a bench right there," he nodded.
Francis' eyes narrowed suspiciously and he peered out over the railings they'd climbed. He seemed to listen carefully to the traffic, and Will hoped to god the police squad he’d tipped off would be smart enough to come without sirens.
Whatever he heard or didn't hear, Francis found no excuse not to follow Will to the bench.
"Aye." Will sat down and Francis sat down, the machine between them, poised to play. "A little introduction..." Will took a deep breath and let it out, reminding himself of all the justification he had for this, all the reasons he'd read about in the papers, seen on the news, all the innocents who'd never be coming back to their families because of what Francis Crawford had helped the terrorists achieve.
"The story behind this one - and correct me if ye know it already - begins a few thousand miles that-a-way." Will pointed in the direction closest to west, and Francis watched him in silence.
He'd put his sunglasses away. The cloud cover had thickened and blackened, and the sun no longer illuminated it from behind. Francis sat on his hands and learned forwards, a little hunched, his frown unchanging and his mouth unhappy.
But he listened.
Will spun a story of a young man's ambition, of a hedonistic reliance on drugs and fame, of mob debts and a wannabe gangster who figured the best way to beat his captors was by joining them. He imagined a sadistic joy in cruelty, the transformation of ambition into a power trip. Noble ideals - the freedom of a nation - soured into commercial, base calculations regarding how many of their side needed to die in order for his side to win. People became pawns to him, as he sought influence over the world in whatever way he could get it.
When Will had finished, Francis let out a quiet snort and stood.
"I told you, Will - prog's out of fashion."
"What? Don't you want to listen to the cassette?"
Francis' cornflower blue eyes were totally hidden by heavy lids as he gazed down at the machine.
"I don't think it will fit the album, from your description," his lip curled.
"Don't you want to give your side of it?!" Will exclaimed.
Francis let the ensuing silence stretch out across the square. Only beyond it there wasn't silence - the noise of the city continued, unabated. And within that noise Francis now heard something that made him curse and shake his head.
"It seems you already have it on your wretched cassette, Marigold," he spat. He turned, evidently resolved to leave.
"No - " Will leapt to his feet, his hands balled into fists. "This is you, this is what you do! What ye've done! And ye'd better start talking, acause soon the whole world is goin' tae know about ye anyway!"
Francis cast a glance over his shoulder, condescending and disdainful. "It seems I've already done more than enough talking, does it not? Now, I am going to go and see my sick friend and check how he's responding to the national press comparing him to a plague rat."
Will rolled his eyes. "Och, he'll be fine. That wasna meant tae happen..."
"Fine?" Francis repeated, and let Will's diagnosis hang. "Then I hope you've learned a lesson about dealing with creatures such as Andrew Hunter," he added coldly before turning away again.
There was still no sign of the fuzz, so Will did the only thing left to him and grabbed a leather-clad shoulder and spun Francis back to face him, swinging his fist simultaneously so that it cracked into one of those sharp-boned cheeks.
"Ye bollix!" Will exclaimed at the pain in his knuckles and bent over, shaking his hand.
It had been effective, though - Francis had staggered and reeled and now held his jaw with his own hand, a look of fury kindling in his eyes.
He gave a little nod to Will, a kind of challenge that asked him, Really? Do you really want to do this?
Will, who had been stewing in resentment and anger - fear for his family and friends - rage at how easily the world fell into place for Francis Crawford, who might have already had it all if he wasn't such an uncompromising tyrant - kissed his bruised knuckles, tossed his red curls back from his forehead, and licked his lips: Aye, I do.
He braced as Francis lunged at him.

Who Killed Mary Carter?
Twenty-one-year-old Mary Carter and her two children were waiting for a bus at the intersection of Madison Rd, and Erie Rd, Cincinnati at about 11.30 am on August 16, 1980. When the bus arrived, the driver told her that the bus didn’t stop at her desired destination.
Mary and her four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter headed towards Vista Avenue. A man in a blue pickup truck stopped and offered the family a ride.
At around 1.45 pm, a woman who lived in Cincinnati East End saw two small children, looking very distressed, walking on the sidewalk outside her house. When the woman asked the children what the problem was, they replied that they couldn’t awake their mother, and they showed her where Mary, was.
The woman took the children to the nearest fire station. The firefighters alerted the police. A group of children had earlier discovered the body of a young woman, which was Mary, in the area. The area, Mary was found, was known, as prostitutes used to take their clients there.
Mary was found in a ditch. According to the autopsy, she was not sexually assaulted. She was strangled to death manually or with a ligature.
The children told police that they were picked up by a man in a blue pickup truck. They have never seen or met the man before. The man let them all out of the truck near Eastern Avenue, at which point they were unable to wake up their mother.
Detectives were furious about the fact that someone had killed Mary in front of her two small children. They worried that the children would be psychologically damaged from the event and were determined to find the man responsible. With little to go on, they appealed to the public for help. Several motorists had seen Mary and her children getting into the truck. They contacted the police and gave the description of both the truck and its driver:
The truck was a midnight blue 1976 or 1977 Ford pickup truck with a 2 to 3-inch white stripe painted on each side. The truck had a black steering wheel and a light blue interior; it also had a single rear window, an aluminium rear bumper, and chrome box rails on each side of its truck bed. The truck may have had a white, removable camper cap over the bed of the truck.
A white male 25-35 years of age, of average height and weight, with either blond or white hair and a dark moustache. He had dark eyes and an olive complexion. The suspect may have been wearing a white short-sleeved shirt, that buttoned down the front, white trousers and brown shoes. He was described as neat in appearance. A composite of the man along with a photo of a similar car was released to the public. Even though police investigated over 100 cases of blue pickup trucks, they were never able to find the car or the man.
Mary was in the process of getting a divorce at the time of her murder. Police questioned her ex-husband, but he was 300 miles away at the time of the murder.
On the previous evening, she had sold a washer and a dryer from her old house, since she would be moving to a new house after the separation. Police wanted to examine whether the man who bought the appliances was the driver of the blue truck, but they were never able to determine who the buyer was.
In the following years, there was an aged progression sketch of the suspect released to the public. Unfortunately, Mary’s killer has never been identified.
