Starting a three week mesocycle of Phase 1 (Stabilty, weak point training etc) with Jack (only kid I know not on instagram) who is headed off to play baseball at Notre Dame in his freshman year. We completed a Phase Zero (Alignment, Function, Muscle Activation, etc) during the season. What causes arthritis? In short, if a joint is not worked in a fully functional manner, over time it will not receive sufficient circulation and begin to degenerate. To be fully functional, a joint must move and load in all three planes of movement. If the body loses the function in any of these planes, it will create stress on the joint and other joints in the kinetic chain. In this case, this former gymnast and track athlete and current tennis player and golfer has developed arthritis in her left hip. While performing a single leg squat test, we should see adequate pronation at the hip joint, which consists of hip flexion, internal rotation, and adduction. The right leg with the healthy hip pronates nicely. You can easily notice the adduction. Meanwhile, the arthritic hip doesn’t pronation. Notice there is no adduction, or knee going in. This function was lost a long time ago. I see these imbalances as early as 8 years of age. Over years of improper nourishment of the joint through circulation, the tissue falls apart. Watch for future posts to see how we reverse this process by restoring function. Pain follows dysfunction. Disappearance of pain follows improvements in function. However, there is a delay in both. An example of how BKE can help an athlete clarify what it is they really want. Rather than spend 10 years in talk therapy, we just ask the athlete the question and let the body tell us what the soul desires. What we found here is: 1. Her name is Abby. 2. She enjoys playing high school basketball. 3. Although it has its place, basketball is not her entire world. 4. She does not desire to play in college. 5. She enjoys being part of the team. 6. She wants to train to be her best high school player she can be. With this clarity, athlete, parent, and coach can all get on the same page. I assess the gait with many different tests. The ability to “toe out” and walk is one. This young athlete was not able to load his neuromuscular system in the toes out position. After a few sessions of BKE, he can load his feet and hips with his legs rotated outward.
