those take months and months of work; ST may not start shooting until May but the cast will be back in Atlanta for ALL of that prep work way, way earlier. and in their contracts it specifies that they have to be available for all of those things between dates A and B with priority clauses if things get extended.

so between the pandemic and the actual amount of time it takes to shoot ST, charlie was in fact VERY busy in 2020 and 2021. he was just working on his show, not outside projects, because he was contracted to work on said show (plus, you know, all the shutdowns and covid slowdowns etc.)

In short... yeah, kinda?

Trader Joe's is a health/eco-conscious/organic type store, like Whole Foods (but you know, not owned by Amazon), so it's viewed as bougie and overly expensive compared to getting groceries at something like Walmart or Target, even if it's not actually as expensive as Whole Foods.

In comparison, Chipotle is fast food, and it's complete, so it's viewed as a reasonable expense; you get a full meal with varied ingredients, which fits into your lunch break or date night.

And that's the priorities thing! I've met a lot of people who would view Chipotle as far more reasonable. It's not the cheapest fast food, but it's affordable enough and has larger portion sizes than the cheapest (McD, W, BK), and is somewhat healthier than them as well.

Fast food is fast and cheap and for people who work multiple jobs or have kids or whatever, it makes sense to go for that option; when factoring in prep time, it is arguably cheaper than something like Trader Joe's.

But if you're willing to put in prep work, or have dietary needs that you'd prefer to manage yourself rather than trust to strangers, or just prefer the taste of some things, Trader Joe's might make more sense, and may even cost less!

Not as little as one of the cheaper supermarkets, which the people who value Cheap and Fast might still see as a problem, but if you value Organic and Fair Trade as elements to your food, that might be an acceptable cost to you.

Your priorities, and maybe that of your community, are set up to prioritize fresh food, that you or a loved one prepare yourselves, and for groceries over fast food. However, there are plenty of communities where fast food (if not Chipotle in particular) is considered more acceptable/normal, because fast food is... well, honestly, at this point we get into "there are parts of the United States where the food deserts are such that fast food is the only way to consume enough calories to survive, because fresh food is so expensive."

(But that's in the McD/W/BK range, not Chipotle, which I understand is a bit pricier.)

So... yeah. There are a lot of people for whom Chipotle is a more acceptable/understandable expense than a mid-range, 'bougie' grocery store like Trader Joe's.

(Not extravagantly more expensive, but as an example: a gallon of whole milk is about $3.50 at Trader Joe's, while it's closer to $3 at Target and $2.66 at Walmart. If you are in a position where you need to prioritize quantity-per-dollar, then shopping at Trader Joe's when there's a Walmart a few blocks over seems unreasonable, when the milk is the same.)

IDK how to put this but there’s this revolving Thought in my head about how some people often tend to be really dismissive of certain discretionary expenses that don’t fall into their specific understandings of ‘expected’ expenses.

I don’t drink. I don’t go out to clubs or bars or anything. Now, some of this is depression and suburban life; I just don’t have anyone to go to places with except my little sister. But the big thing here is that:

I don’t drink alcohol. (I also don’t drink soda, but since I do drink iced tea and juice and coffee, that’s not exactly relevant.) The average American spends $30-$40/month on alcohol. So, after six months, that Average American has spent $180-$240 on alcohol.

I view alcohol as one of those things that I just… can recategorize. I don’t drink or smoke, so I can reprioritize that money. I like having colored hair, so in my mind I can go ‘well, people spend this much money on something I don’t have any interest in, and consider that normal; I’ll spend that same money on something I do have interest in.“ The salon is expensive, sure, but it’s something I prioritize well over a similarly expensive thing; it’s just all at once instead of over the course of months.

It’s just a matter of what a person’s priorities are. This also goes for things like gym memberships, acrylic nails, or… whatever, IDK what people consider normal for discretionary spending. Nice nights out with their partner, maybe. Sportsball tickets. All that.

What it comes down to is really that I’m wondering what it is about certain categories of spending that has people viewing them as inherently more acceptable.

Why is This Much Spent On Baseball Tickets more acceptable than This Much Spent on Taylor Swift Tickets.

Why is This Much Spent On Alcohol more acceptable than This Much Spent On Lattes.

Why is This Much Spent on Chipotle more acceptable than This Much Spent at Trader Joe’s.

These things are all in the same family of costs. Baseball playoff tickets appear to be more expensive than TSwift. The alcohol is marginally cheaper than the coffee. The food is more or less on par, dependent on what you get.

So why is one usually more worthy of a side-eye or mockery?
