The Umbrellas' self-titled 2021 debut album was a breakout moment in an otherwise grim year, winning critical praise and fueling tours with everyone from labelmates Papercuts to Fucked Up. A lean 10 track affair, it grasps towards beatific pop while fuelled by a sense of risk-taking and the precision that comes from long months on the road. The Umbrellas coalesced in 2018 around a group of musicians with connections to the legendary San Francisco record emporium Amoeba Music. Singer and guitarist Matt Ferrera had previous links with bassist Nick Oka, as well as the powerhouse drummer Keith Frerichs. A chance encounter with Morgan Stanley singing karaoke at a Fourth of July party cemented the line-up around an avowed thirst for melody. “All of us love really earnest pop songs,” Nick points out. “I guess we got to a point in our lives where we wanted to be genuine.” Playing shows at San Francisco’s vital DIY redoubt Hit Gallery, The Umbrellas would share line-ups with local heroes such as April Magazine and Cindy. Recording their debut album across a two-day spell at Matt’s parents’ house, the results won a devoted cult following. The experience of frequent touring bonded them tightly and allowed the volume to tick up a little higher (and higher...) and and feeding a desire for their next record to more closely mirror the energy of their live shows. “I think we got tired of people saying, oh you’re so much louder than I thought you’d be!” laughs Matt. “Our early recordings are sweet and earnest… and we wanted it to be louder.” Kicking off sessions in November 2022, the band used an ad hoc space Matt created in his basement, which allowed the sessions to be a little more relaxed in terms of timescale than their debut. “We gave ourselves more space for this album,” says Keith. “We wanted time to sit on the songs, and really work on them.” Capturing their thrilling live dynamic on tape, The Umbrellas are at once more physical and yet also more controlled on their new album. Take opening track ‘Three Cheers!’ – the peppy, sun-soaked rush masks a barbed lyric, courtesy of Nick Oka. “It’s a pseudo-political song about power struggles that occur in a job situation, or a friend group. It’s an observational song.” ‘Toe The Line’ has an unkempt, rollicking sense of energy, the playful relationship analogy of the lyric pushed to the speed of light by Keith’s just-chaotic-enough punk drumming. ‘When You Find Out’ meanwhile epitomises their unified, egalitarian way of making music – with The Umbrellas, each voice counts. “It sounds different from any song we’ve ever written together,” says Morgan. “It shows how much we’ve grown. Trust helps us to build the songs. It’s definitely a team effort.” It's also a record of ambition. ‘Say What You Mean’ stretches past the four-minute mark, the viola performance informed by Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt. ‘Gone’ was the first song attempted for the new album, and the last they actually finished, endless re-writes transforming it into a manifesto of control and release. Taken as a whole Fairweather Friend is a bold indiepop triumph, crafted with purpose and attention. Taking their time over each note, the four-piece have strengthened their songwriting, adding depth and assurance while unlocking their potential. Some bonds last a lifetime – The Umbrellas are ready to capture your heart. Read the full article

Sierra Canyon and the San Diego Tip-Off Challenge
Tumblr media
This past week saw the debut of Sierra Canyon and company, as they traveled down to Montgomery High School for the San Diego Tip-Off Challenge.  Thursday’s festivities tipped off on ESPN3 at 8 PM with a lively local crowd as well as a roaring uproar when Dwayne Wade entered the building to check-out his son Zaire Wade and the rest of the Trailblazers.  In what was a blow-out, the Trailblazers won handily 91-44.  Brandon Boston was the star of the show, leading Sierra Canyon with 22 points and Terren Frank chipped in 20 points.  It was purely a David versus Goliath match-up, however, in this case David was without a slingshot as Goliath was dominating all night long.  Here are some take-home points regarding their first game of the season:
This team has serious 2013 Miami Heat vibes to it
In addition to playing like the superstar-filled team of LeBron James & Dwayne Wade, this team fittingly has the offspring of the players.  Bronny James made his highly anticipated debut, scoring 10 points off the bench, with his first points coming off a three-pointer.  Zaire Wade had a highlight of his own as he soared for an alley-oop early in the game.
BJ Boston is the alpha dog of this team
With the absence of Ziaire Williams, who is waiting to clear eligibility clearance on December 29th, BJ Boston grandfathered into the leader of the pack.  In such a star-studded team, Boston is not only older, but he is the highest ranked ranked of the bunch, tabbed as the ninth best recruit by the ESPN 100.  BJ Boston showed a lot of composure, running the floor, grabbing rebounds, and finding the rim for easy lay-ups.  Boston showed a lot of maturity as well, going for lay-ups instead of show-stopping dunks when he had the opportunity to do so.
Depth, depth, depth
Imagine a team where the depth goes beyond the starting line-up.  Enter the 2019-2020 Sierra Canyon Trailblazers.  The first game had Harold Yu coming off the bench, with his 7’3” frame immediately being a game changer.  He blocked shots, grabbed rebounds, had an easy dunk, and even pulled up and made a three-pointer of his own.  Bronny James, the exuberant, young superstar, helped the team come into another wind, as he received a reception of his own once being subbed into the game.
The rest of the games
The first true test for the Trailblazers began on Friday evening when they went head to head against the last team to defeat team in the CIF Open Division State Playoffs, the St. Augustine Saints from San Diego.  The Saints are led by Coach Mike Haupt, who is known for his ability to bring together a group of individuals despite differences in talent.  His teams play together, gritty, tough, and are the true epitome of one for all and all for one.  Cathedral Catholic, the Trailblazer’s other opponent, is no stranger to high level competition as they they defeated Sierra Canyon in the state playoffs back in 2016.  Cathedral is known to get highly touted players and have depth throughout their rosters.
This year, the Saints are anchored by versatile forward Chibuzo Agbo, whom has finally put together his game.  Agbo can play inside, shoot it from deep, and this season has put the effort on defense.  The Saints came out swinging, as they scrapped on defense, fought for rebounds, took care of the ball, and didn’t look intimidated.  Their guard play proved solid, as they looked for opportunities for easy three-pointers and converted at the basket when possible.  At halftime, the Saints trailed 27-24 and were in a good position for a battle.  However, their one-two punch of Boston/Frank served too much for the Saints.  They combined for 45 points, as Terren hurt the Saints from a myriad of positions on the court.  BJ Boston made the defining play late in the third quarter, as he hit a three-pointer while falling to the ground, resulting in an and-one.  75-54, Sierra Canyon.
The end of the weekend’s trio of games in San Diego served as Sierra Canyon’s final test of the weekend in another team that defeated them in the state playoffs previously, the Cathedral Catholic Dons.  The Dons are led by Obinna Anyanwu, Alex Wade, Thomas Nattariani, and Beon Riley, all Division 1 prospects.  The Dons raced to a 12-0 lead, as they played off of the excitement of the San Diego crowd.  The guard play of Wade, Nattariani, & Riley proved to be effective as they each proved to be ready for the opposition at hand.  Obinna Anyanwu proved that he is amongst the State’s elite and perhaps may need to be in the ESPN rankings again.  Sierra Canyon escaped with a victory in the wake of improved play from Zaire Wade, coming back up injury in a 59-46 victory.
Sierra Canyon does not have a point guard
Asides from Bronny James, who comes off the bench, the Trailblazers do not have a true point guard.  Players from time to time take turns bringing the ball up the court, however, Sierra Canyon tries to mask this.  They pressure the ball up the court, try to get turnovers, and try to advance the ball up the court and play uptempo.  However, Cathedral Catholic wasn’t phased by this with their superb guard play and it showed.
They are still learning how to play with each other
This superteam is still in their infancy period, in which the loose parts are still trying to play together.  As with any super-team, Coach Chevalier will have to discover his most valuable rotations and the players will have to play as a single unit.  Although Brandon Boston and Terren Frank  provided sparks throughout the tournament, the Trailblazers cannot simply hand them the keys when they need a bucket.  Also, when Ziaire Williams comes back, they must learn how to add another wheel to the cog.
They will face stiff competition in the future
It was noted in the last article that the Trailblazers would be tested, however, the nation saw that on ESPN.  Although on paper they look invincible, St. Augustine and Cathedral Catholic showed that on the court, they are a mere basketball team.  With this comes human mistakes and miscues and at times on the court the teams looked equal.  However, with the influx of talent on Sierra Canyon, they managed to pull away both games unscathed.  With their schedule not getting easier, expect close games in the wake of national players and nationally ranked teams.

Report: The Beers Drunk Most on Super Bowl Sunday
Tumblr media
Although Nielsen predicted we’d be drinking a lot of Pinot Grigio, hard seltzer, and hazy IPA, beer remains a top choice among Super Bowl audiences whether at home, at a bar, or at the game.
To suss out just how much beer was poured at bars and restaurants nationwide, BeerBoard, a data and consumer engagement company whose clients include Buffalo Wild Wings (the largest pourer of draft beer in the U.S.), Hooters, Twin Peaks, Applebee’s, Mellow Mushroom, and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, analyzed beer pour volume at thousands of chain restaurants on Super Bowl Sunday. It then compared results for Feb. 3, 2019 to data from last year’s Super Bowl on Feb. 3, 2018.
BeerBoard shared several insights of its annual report via email on Monday. Highlights include the most-poured beer style, beer brands that increased pour volume, beer styles that decreased this year, and unexpected habits of beer drinkers in New England and Los Angeles.
10 Takeaways from BeerBoard’s 2019 Big Game Pour Report:
Beer volume increased in 2019, with on-premise consumption growing 5.8 percent over 2018.
In Atlanta, where the Super Bowl was held, pour volume increased 20.2 percent over 2018, when it took place in Minneapolis.
Light lager was the most-poured style nationally, growing 17.8 percent over 2018.
Coors Light saw the biggest increase at 20 percent, followed by Miller Lite at 18.1 percent. Bud Light, meanwhile, increased a mere 4.6 percent.
Modelo increased 37.4 percent over 2018, and Dos Equis increased 4.1 percent.
In Los Angeles, Miller Lite consumption increased 88 percent.
Budweiser decreased nearly 49 percent nationally over 2018. However, it usurped Guinness as the most-sold beer in New England in 2019.
Lager as a category decreased overall (13.1 percent). However, in New England, lager increased nearly 12 percent, driven by growth of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, which increased 28 percent over 2018.
Craft beer also decreased overall (7 percent), and local craft took an even harder hit, dipping 17 percent over 2018.
In New England, IPA fell 15.5 percent. IPA decreased 6.1 percent nationally.
Can’t win ’em all.

Single Review: “One Day at a Time” by American Aquarium
Tumblr media
American Aquarium has traversed a lot of ground thus far on the first couple singles from Things Change (out on June 1st via New West Records). The reformed alt-country/rock outfit still helmed by BJ Barham has explored new territory and revisited their standard sound, injecting a new flare into it. And now, the third song in advance of the group’s forthcoming release feels more like something that would have been complimentary of Barham’s solo record of 2016. “One Day at a Time” is a minimalistic song, one led by the prominent though gentle picking of Barham’s acoustic guitar, accented only by some airy notes from the pedal steel guitar and on occasion some light keys. That allows Barham’s most potent skills to shine the brightest: his remarkable abilities as a songwriter and storyteller. This track is one of his most personal to date – and he’s never been one to shy away from dealing with his demons through his music, getting quite introspective in this case as he glances back at his career as a performer. Barham addresses his habits that developed, coming to use alcohol as a “crutch”, a means to be able to perform, while also reckoning past behaviors, not just with his addictions, but also some of the songs he wrote.
“…I'd kick, I'd scream, I'd curse the names of the girls who walked away. You see, the man left holdin' the pen controls how every story ends and truth becomes a martyr for the sake of the song.” The second verse is so powerful due to the overwhelming amount of truth that it holds and demonstrates an immense amount of personal growth given that he has apparently reassessed some of his works in retrospect. “…I guess it comes with the job: Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' roll!” he gruffly croons at another point, practically resigning himself to the fact that those risks were basically inherent to the line of work before making another bold and insightful declaration, “You see, songs fulfill a human need to sit back and watch another man bleed. So, for a moment, we don't have to feel sorry for ourselves.” The title “One Day at a Time” is a self-explanatory one, the basic gist of it being that you need to take things one day at a time, especially when recovering from addiction; Barham continuing to guide everyone along to the point he is currently at in life, having finally found a person whom he wanted to share his life with, still striving to be the best person he can possibly be. “…I'm just gettin' along, rightin' these wrongs. One day at a time.” In the end, “One Day at a Time” is an outstanding song about redemption. It’s about accepting that directly or indirectly your actions affected the lives of others – family, friends, ex’s – and wanting to fix that. Maybe not exclusively through making amends, but at least by adjusting your life and rising to be a better person. Poignant when it needs to be and marked by an uplifting silver lining quality, it’s another stunning example of what an exceptional musician Barham is, this single just highlighting his magnificent talents as a lyricist and singer. Traits of his that only grow more impressive with the passing of time.
