hi! one thing i've been curious about since the mexican gp is what is the sort of public opinion/reputation around bizzarap, nicki nicole and duki within argentina? i saw someone say they're like the most famous musicians there or something, so i'd love to know since their support for franco is real great to see! i guess i saw some like mixed feelings about them online, maybe their reputations aren't that good in the general public...? but those comments i had to translate so i could just be getting them wrong. do you think you could answer or know who could if you can't?

The only negative thing people (myself included) think is that they are very "apolitical" and never take a stance in anything (duki and bizarrap more than anything). Which it doesnt look good but at the same time, specially for niki, it could mean a lot of abuse from the president itself and all the voters.

But overall they are well liked! And their music is everywhere!

Album Review of the Week: Shakira - Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (2024)

Since releasing her last album, El Dorado, in 2017, Shakira released a smattering of one-off singles. Eventually, those singles made up most of her latest release, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. This album follows the dissolution of her longtime partnership with the father of her children and the album's title lifts a line from the scathing and honest Bzrp Music Sessions Vol. 53 (I hate that this iconic song does not have a real title). While this album garners deserved criticism for only featuring 8 new tracks and otherwise compiling one-off singles from the last 2 years, it is still a great project and the new songs are fantastic! I also love the concept, the album's title translates to "Women no longer cry" and the lyric goes on to say "Las mujeres facturan (women cash in)" which is why she is crying tears of diamonds on the cover and the larger imagery is that of diamonds.

The album opens with Puntería which also served as the album's first "real" single and features Cardi B. While the track itself does not offer anything terribly unique, it is certainly enjoyable. I like the little synthesizer moment, although the sound of it seems cheap somehow. I really enjoy Cardi B's part! She is singing instead of rapping and sounds really really nice.

La Fuerte is produced by Bizzarap who had also done the Bzrp Sessions 53. I haven't heard most of their stuff other than with Shakira, but this second collaboration with them sounds very similar to the previous in a way, mostly when it gets to the choppier vocals. Again, the synthesizer of it all just feels a little cheap like an amateur at the computer.

Tiempo Sin Verte gets back into Shakira's rock roots a little bit, it has a darker sound than the preceding tracks. The chorus has a really nice upbeat yet still subdued energy and her vocals are very smooth.

Cohete features Rauw Alejandro whose voice I super do not appreciate and this track has cheap-sounding instrumentation as well. Other than that, it is still a nice bouncy track but nothing I will put into a playlist.

(Entre Paréntesis) with Grupo Frontera is a great nod to regional Mexican music - she even gives a little tribute to Selena in the music video by doing her classic spin! I love Tejano and regional Mexican music in general so this is a definite standout for me. With this album, she was hungry to collaborate with people from many different genres and it shows - in good ways and not so good ways (but this is one of the good ones!).

Cómo Dónde y Cuándo is my favorite of the new tracks. It is another rockier one and reminds me of the Fijación Oral era with its edgier vocals and instrumentation.

Nassau is a forgettable track, but sounds really nice while it is on. There just isn't anything really unique about it so it doesn't stand out among 16 tracks.

Última closes out our new tracks with a touching piano ballad. While I am decent at Spanish, I am not quite good enough to pick up on all of the lyrics, so while Shakira sounds great it is hard for a piano ballad to resonate.

As we get into the 2nd half, or "previously released singles" portion, things become very disjointed as one might expect when cramming 2 years of singles into an album.

Te Felicito with Rauw Alejandro was a big hit on Tik Tok (I am told). I really like the pulsating synths during the chorus, but unfortunately that's about all that I do like. The choppy vocals are not my style, and you already know my feelings about the featured artist. The robot that became the mascot of this song was pretty weird as well.

Monotonía with Ozuna was, I believe, the first post-breakup song that was released. With imagery of a bleeding heart. The instrumentation is really nice, especially when paired with a dark subject. It is almost tropical, like I should be partying on a beach with a bonfire as the sun sets.

I went wild for Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53 when it came out. I had this song on non-stop for about 2 months! This video is the best for enjoying the music video while also seeing the English translation so that you can see just how feral she went! The lyrics go so deep it's insane and it is just a fun banger of a track.

TQG with Karol G was another big one, this one did not resonate as much with me. Again, it's a fun track but it doesn't bring anything unique to the table.

Acróstico is a nice piano ballad that actually features her sons, Milan and Sasha on vocals!

Copa Vacía with Manuel Turizo is not a single I was interested in on its own, but I am happy to have it on this CD! It has a great beat and fun melody, I don't even hate the male vocalist's voice which is rare in Spanish music for me!

El Jefe with Fuerza Régida is one of the better songs on this second half. Another one that is reminiscent of Mexican music, it has a choppy beat but it is done in such a way that it is not annoying and dance able. Sometimes, those really choppy instruments can be grating.

Then, we close out with a Tiesto Remix of Bzrp Sessions 53. I really like this remix! It is certainly not better than the original but I enjoy how they made a beat out of her vocal melody from the original, that was a very creative choice.
