‘Imaginary Cat’ - A Kdrama Review

About ‘Imaginary Cat’ A slice-of-life web k-drama series about a webtoon artist with a sad past (played by Yoo Seung Ho) and his (talking) cat. 

I’m going to write this review with no spoilers. I will discuss some of my issues with the characters but I’m not going to say what happens.

The Good Stuff:

Reviewer’s Note: Honestly when I saw the first episode of this show, I wasn’t  sure if I could be impartial enough to review it. First off, Yoo Seung Ho is so precious in my opinion, and I actually have an addiction to anything with talking animals so...you see my dilemma? But luckily for you (and I guess less for me), there were enough things to balance out the good.

Great Actors in this Web Drama: Web dramas usually have fairly unknown actors, but this is not the case with ‘Imaginary Cat.’

The leading lady Oh Na-Woo is played by the adorable best friend from ‘Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo’ (Cho Hye-Jung) so I was super excited to see her as a lead! 

Yoo Seung-Ho is expressive and great in anything he does.

The CAT: Played by Beteuli (let’s give the cat an actual credit am i right?) was unique looking and totally funny!

Talking Cat!: I loved the talking cat and her role as a companion and family member to Hyun Jong-Hyun. She was hilarious and I loved scenes where she was alone in the apartment.

It’s Short: Want something shorter than your typical k-drama? This show is only eight 30 minute episodes so feel free to binge.

Soft Boys & Soft Cats: If I’m being honest, I continued to watch this show just so I could see the boy and kitty being adorable together. I was not disappointed.

The Bad Stuff

This is NOT a romance. This isn’t technically “bad,” but Viki says this show is a romance and it’s not. It’s true that there is a friendship that becomes deeper, but if you’re expecting any hand-holding, kissing, etc., just be prepared. I was disappointed because you know I love romance.

Hyun Seung-Ho is very self-centered and a tad mean: Even Yoo Seung Ho can’t make the lead guy seem like he’s nice to the leading lady. She’s a super giving and compassionate person who goes out on a limb to care for him and his cat (regardless of the plot line stuff) and he never actually compliments her or confesses and is actually quite rude at times. You see him start to like her more, but the show doesn’t do a good job relaying how he actually feels for her.

A few weak plot points: There are a couple of parts that I don’t want to give away, that are a tad far reaching or don’t seem like the character would actually act the way they do. 

Rough Cat Handling: So, a friend of mine said she had trouble watching because the actors are a little rough with the cat. Biteuli is clearly a talented and chill kitty, but there are some scenes where you can tell she’s not into what’s happening. Maybe they should have held the cat the way a cat wants to be held? Just a suggestion ;-)

In Conclusion: This kdrama was fun to watch and pretty low investment because it’s only eight thirty minute episodes. The actors are great and the cat is adorable. It has some missteps plot wise, but overall a pleasant watch. 

Rating: 7/10

When she heard that her mom was coming NaWoo headed out to find JongHyun. She accidentally got locked in the bookstore with him for the night much to her delight and JongHyun’s dismay. But she gives him some good advice. He could write about the thing that’s most precious to him.

In the morning NaWoo learns that the stray kitten she had been feeding died. She accuses the cat hater of killing the kitten as well as her lost kitten Haru. JongHyun shields her from the hater and helps bury the kitten.

NaWoo goes to JongHyun’s house to see BokGil but BokGil isn’t happy, especially when NaWoo says she looks like Haru.

JongHyun tells NaWoo to leave now that she has seen BokGil and don’t come back. BokGil says he did a good job.

Pissed off BokGil messes up the apartment again.  JongHyun accuses BokGil of acting out of jealousy. But what if he lost BokGil like NaWoo lost Haru.

DokkoPD arrives to find JongHyun and Rival bickering again. There is one spot opening and she needs submissions from both of them. Rival’s stuff seems recycled while JongHyun’s is fresh. But there is not much time left.

When they arrive at the cafe, HaeGong is amazed that JongHyun actually knows a girl. On top of that the girl returns his laundered shirt and asks about BokGil.

HaeGong heard that JongHyun’s webtoon is going to be released and wants to have a celebration party even though it’s not certain yet.

BokGil is left stranded on the drafting table by the window as JongHyun hurries to his part time job. Today he has to set up for rival’s book signing event.

JongHyun asks for a couple of days off to work on his webtoon but the manager can’t believe that he is an artist so he doesn’t let him off.

BokGil is still on the drafting table when JongHyun gets home and she has a fever. She didn’t have any food or water all day.

JongHyun takes BokGil to the vet and NaWoo follows.

Turns out that the vet is an old classmate of NaWoo’s and he seems to like her. Vet loans JongHyun a cat carrier to take BokGil home.

JongHyun thanks BokGil for being next to him. When people are sick they usually think of their moms but BokGil is happy to be home.

NaWoo set up an appointment for BokGil to be checked out at the vet. He is getting off work late but she promises to wait at the office for him.

Late again, JongHyun says that a family member was sick, but he is an orphan.

Rival doesn’t miss an opportunity to dis JongHyun. Rival has 60,000 members in his fan cafe and JongHyun suggests he have his next event at a stadium.

NaWoo admits that she is starting to like JongHyun as she is making a bell collar for BokGil. Of course she likes BokGil too.

Boss sends JongHyun to get coffee for rival and he brings it black.

Rival’s book is “Beautiful Mind” and JongHyun comments on how different the author is with his rotten mind. Rival denies plagiarizing JongHyun’s work. JongHyun says he can fool the world but he can’t fool himself. (not true)

HaeGong heard about rival’s book signing event today. The idea that rival made his debut by stealing JongHyun’s idea angers him. JongHyun says there must be a reason why all of rivals’s sequels were hits too. He must know something they don’t know and HaeGong believes there’s more to it than that.

JongHyun arrives late at the clinic to find NaWoo and the vet waiting.

As BokGil is being examined NaWoo wants to buy things for her. She doesn’t think BokGil needs to go on a diet. She just needs some supplements.

Vet agrees that BokGil needs more TLC. NaWoo wants to pay the bill but JongHyun wants to take responsibility for his cat. When they get home JongHyun is preoccupied with his webtoon while BokGil goes exploring. The lady who checked the gas left the door ajar and BokGil escapes. DramaNice
