The Looming Power Struggle: Will AI Data Centers Outpace Bitcoin in Energy Consumption?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving, promising game-changing advancements in countless fields. But this progress comes at a hidden cost: energy. Data centers, the brains behind AI, are projected to guzzle more energy than Bitcoin mining by 2026, raising concerns about sustainability and sparking crucial questions.
The AI Power Surge
Exascale Computing: Training complex AI models requires immense computational power, and high-performance servers equipped with specialized hardware (like GPUs) are energy-hungry machines.
Data, the AI Fuel: Datasets used for training can be petabytes or even exabytes in size, demanding energy-intensive storage solutions.
Cooling the Beast: All this processing generates significant heat, and data centers rely on sophisticated cooling systems, further adding to their energy footprint.
Bitcoin's Current Reign
While Bitcoin currently consumes a significant amount of energy, its future trajectory is uncertain. Some predict a decline due to mining efficiency improvements, while others anticipate continued growth.
Beyond Numbers: The Impact
The potential surge in data center energy consumption raises serious concerns:
Sustainability Woes: Increased energy usage translates to higher carbon emissions, potentially jeopardizing climate goals.
Resource Strain: The concentrated demand for power could put a strain on local grids, leading to potential disruptions and reliability issues.
Seeking a Sustainable Future
The industry isn't ignoring the challenge. Initiatives are underway to make AI data centers more sustainable:
Renewable Energy: Shifting to solar, wind, and other renewable sources can significantly reduce the carbon footprint.
Energy Efficiency: Adopting efficient servers, storage, and cooling systems can make a substantial difference.
AI for Efficiency: Ironically, AI itself is being used to optimize data center operations, identifying and eliminating energy waste.
The Road Ahead: Navigating the Challenge
Addressing the future energy demands of AI requires a multi-pronged approach:
Collaboration: Researchers, tech companies, policymakers, and the public need to work together to develop and implement sustainable solutions.
Innovation: Continued investment in energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources is crucial.
Public Awareness: Raising public awareness about the environmental impact of AI and data centers can drive demand for responsible practices.
The future of AI and data centers hinges on our ability to marry technological progress with environmental responsibility. By collaborating and innovating, we can ensure that AI's potential is realized in a way that does not come at the cost of our planet's well-being.

My distoipian short story i hope you like it
I wake up. I turn off my alarm clock (head implant) and leave my house. My mom is already at work, her job as a looping stripper hologram starts at 3am. I get on the city bus (flying) and head to dystopian megaschool. Chris Pratt Generalized Turbocademy, located in central HyperNeo CyberJersey.
As soon as I arrive the custodian android straps me into my infopod. The VR headset thrusts itself onto my eyes and feeds me two hours straight of propagandvertising (portmantaeu of propaganda+advertising). I am then quizzed.
"Who Won The Neon Wars?" It asks.
"PepsiCo," I answer.
"How Many People Died In The Neon Wars?"
"2.6 Trillion."
"Name One Long-Term Consequence Of The Neon Wars."
"The sun got extinguished."
And the quiz continues. I get every question right- if I got two or more wrong, my infopod would liquefy me and send my remains to the cafeteria to be served as lunch. The headset chastises my handwriting and recommends a stabilizer implant for my wrist. (I already have one but the machine is trying to get me to admit it's a bootleg. If I do admit it, I will also be liquefied.)
After that is lunch. They're serving my favorite today: liquefied students. I meet up with my friends Xyrone, Klazzz, and M.I.K.E. and we gossip together.
Xyrone is a hacker with a headset constantly strapped over his eyes and a bitcoin-mining rig surgically mounted to his back. He doesn't need to study because he can break through the school's firewall and change his grades to A's. We keep asking him to change ours too, but he's a Nova-Libertarian, so he thinks if we want it that bad we should do it ourselves.
Klazzz was recruited at age 8 to pilot a mech in the global manhunt for Saddam Hussien. (He'd have to be 900 years old by now at least, but modern medicine is crazy so I dunno.) A bully thinks it's be funny to mimic an explosion sound with his mouth right behind her, and her combat instincts kick in and she vaporizes him and his posse with her arm-mounted neutron cannon. (If anyone tries to remove it from her body, it shuts down her nervous system and then self-destructs, meaning it's classified as a disability aid)(that's why she's allowed to have it in school)
M.I.K.E. is a closeted singularity. He doesn't think anyone knows but he's obviously such a sjklop (slur for AIs) its not even funny. Sometimes I paint captchas on my face so he can't tell its me and then I beat the fuck out of him. I think it's funny.
We realize we all have next period free so we decide to skip class. On the way to our favorite pizza joint we notice a news bulletin being projected onto the sky. Greg (Eternal God-CEO, President, Emperor-Lord, and Judge of the Northern Hemisphere, as well as founder of tech startup Rooblop) is announcing that we're going to nuke Venus, just in case there are aliens there.
We turn around from the news just in time to realize that M.I.K.E.'s pathfinding has malfunctioned and led him into the middle of the street. He's hit by a car and immediately torn to shreds (all cars have sawblades mounted to the front to discourage jaywalking.) The driver doesn't even bat an eye (he's also an AI, his own pathfinding malfunctions a second later and he makes a sharp left turn into a crowded mall.) I save the footage and post it to the cloud. It gains 2 billion views over the next thirty seconds. Ten seconds after that, a rights organization cancels me for glorifying AI murder. On the horizon, I see a drone strike get called in on my Dystopian Megaschool, and I'm glad I skipped class.
We stop at the Dystopian Mega Pizza Shop on the way home. Their pepperoni is guaranteed to only be 90% liquefied high schoolers, and the cookies they sell even have real Khreim! (not to be confused with Cream, Creme, Kreem, Chreamm, or Kchreeighm.) Unfortunately, the entire restaurant is sold out, as the cadre of CopDrones in the corner bought everything edible in the building to fuel their starved appetites. Klazzz throws a disparaging insult in their direction, and in response they shoot Xyrone 87 times in the chest.
I arrive home. My mom is home on her 30 minute break. She's made meatloaf, made with Tomaytoh Soss(tm,) Garlic, Liquid Teenagers, and a whole lot of love. I give her a big hug. She says she has to run, but there's a special birthday treat in the freezer. I open it up to find a whole pint of ice cream waiting for me. My favorite flavor: mint chip.
And you'll never guess what it's made of.
That's right: Bugs.
THIS POST IS SATIRE

Oh well. I guess I could stand to "eat" and "finish unpacking" and all those other pesky meat-body things. Deltarune... Later.
Good morning. It's Deltaruning time~♪
...as soon as I set up the new computer, hopefully with a local account so I don't have to deal with Mr Michael Soft's surveillance state 💥
Also it's definitely high time I played, bc it feels like my Xitter filters are wearing down & letting through the occasional fanarts and minor visual spoilers... Like, apparently Susie wears a tan jacket while standing next to Toriel at some point? Go girl expand that wardrobe, but also. Yeagh 🫠
#eMe_irl#user manual also says DO NOT use this machine to mine bitcoin or other crypto stuff#''consommation élevée d'électricité et de temps'' lmaooo. nobody reads these manuals but i appreciate them trying

Summary of evidence and concerns:
Trump is a Russian asset working for Putin (see book American Kompromat by journalist Craig Unger or Active Measures documentary with Hillary Clinton(1), sources below). Elon and Trump are working together (2). They both have substantial ties to Epstein (3) (4) (5) (6). Trump stole election software in 2020 (7). Similarly, Elon Musk has been in contact with Russia for the last 2 years (8). This includes during the Ukraine War when Russia began using Starlink (9) while it was claimed they got them third party and not from Musk himself; however now appears imo to show Elon is a doublecrosser.
Starlink, Elon's satellite company, was installed in some voting machines across the country (10) and may have interfered with vote tabulation. Voting machines were found to be connected to the internet (11). An independent report on voting machines concluded that tabulation tampering was possible with current voting machines, so hand counts are vital (12). In September, Politico had an investigation finding Russian malware on a state voter registration database (13). Also, there were malicious fake texts from fake DNC organizations, connected to Elon who donated to them, that were fishing voter info (14).
Elon had results of election on an app 4 hours before official counts had it (15), per Joe Rogan podcast in a discussion to Theo Von. Earlier this year, Tana Monogeau, released info that she'd been offered millions of dollars to endorse the Trump campaign and that she knew others had taken the deal (16).
They will release more info admitting their fraud because they are a Russian asset trying to start a civil war here (speculation). They want us to be confused about sources and who to trust and what's real, they want to release the truth to anger us and lies to anger us. Trump has refused to write an ethics statement for transition of power saying he will transition peacefully (17). JD Vance has also told the EU that unless they allow X unfettered access to the EU (to spread propaganda), they will withdraw the US from NATO (18) - which will prompt wars or takeover either way and weakens Germany, who is entering an election since their government couldn't agree on Ukraine budget. A Russian space chief said Elon Musk’s plan to bomb Mars is a cover to put nuclear weapons in space (19).
Also speculation, are reports of widespread ballot rejection, especially for signatures. There are articles claiming already that it is because GenZ does not know cursive (20) - except the signature simply must match your driver's license. It's not a cursive writing test. Avocado toast but with gen z voting fraud. We do not yet have the ballot rejection rates but typically they are around 1% to 1.5% (21).
Crypto is how right wing conservatism got funded here. It's why it took off- it was basically UBI for those men, funded by foreign intelligence for this purpose along with other uses for crypto like dark money, drugs, trafficking, etc (22)(23). The least informed people we knew were investing in crypto when it was starting, mining bitcoins. They couldn't tell you what a stock or tariff is, yet they were making bank in crypto trading. Crypto trading, especially memecoins, appears to be an obvious scam to most because it's the stock market without ownership. So why were these 4chan pedophiles and nazis doing so well? Because it was just meant to give them money the whole time. And crypto is great for transferring money internationally from shady organizations to shady people (24). Far right catchphrases and meme campaigns dispersed online including X, give out the key words/catchphrases for the new coin that isn't a scam and will disperse money. People who are deep in these groups interner algorithms get these keywords first and normal outsiders will either not notice or will stay away. No normal person wants a coin that references Hitler if they are just scrolling memecoins.
Once the government has been taken over, they can force their memecoin as the national currency and then rug pull, which is also what Musk is likely going to do to Tesla at the same time. The entire point is to bankrupt America for Putin and his cartoon villain cohorts. Musk is already saying he wants to withdraw from US currency due to national debt (Trump added most of the national debt) (25).
If you're in Germany, take note. They are coming for you next, your election is soon.

Trump:"Our little secret is having a big impact"
If Trump was so sure the election was rigged and they were going to turnover every state including California, then why hasn't he asked for a recount in all the states with representatives that didn't get elected that he thought would be? Shouldn't he be suing for recounts? He did it last time. Why doesn't he want an investigation this time?

If they get locked into years of asset forfeiture from layers and layers of state and municipal claims and lawsuits (which will require discovery lol), we may be able to stop them. Which is likely part of why they are moving to bitcoin as well.

The whole of 1-A stared at their desks, silence ringing throughout the classroom. Some were simply stunned, while others, like Bakugou, were seething.
Midoriya Izuku had died. It had been sudden, and it had been violent. One second, Midoriya was helpiMidoriya interrupted the paragraph by slamming the door open.
"Sorry I'm late!" Midoriya apologized cheerfully. "The trains were stopped 'cause someone tied some lady to the tracks-"
"DEKU!" Uraraka screamed, launching herself from her desk and tackle-hugging the green-haired boy.
"What the FUCK?!" Bakugou screeched.
"You're alive?!" Kirishima shouted.
"Perhaps this is merely a spirit or possibly a ghost-" Tokoyami speculated.
"Midobaaaaaabe!" Kaminari cried as he rushed to hug Midoriya, narrowly avoiding Todoroki's ice spear.
"Guys?" Midoriya asked. "I-"
"Hang on." Shouji interrupted. He thumbed a faint bump on the back of Midoriya's neck. "What is this?"
"They chipped you like a dog?" Kouda wondered.
"Deserved." Bakugou grumbled.
"Oh, that's my personality and memory chip, or PMC." Midoriya explained, as if this wasn't something completely insane.
The class stared at him.
"Memory chip?" Aoyama asked.
"Yeah!" Midoriya explained. "I'm a clone of the real Midoriya with all of his memories and personality! So I'm essentially the same person!"
"HUH?!"
"Did Hatsume-kun do this?!" Iida demanded.
"If she had perfected cloning technology, don't you think you have bigger problems than a clone of Midoriya-chan, kero?" Asui pointed out.
Iida sat down, thoroughly haunted.
"Wait, maybe Twice?" Kirishima wondered.
"Bubaigawara was extrajudicially murdered by Hawks." Uraraka disagreed. "And I haven't broken Himiko out of jail yet, so it can't be her."
"I am going to ignore that you said that." Aizawa grumbled from the desk, where he had pulled out a bottle of rum and begun drinking straight from the bottle.
"Guys." Midoriya said, catching their attention. "It's my cloning machine. I built it back when I was thirteen."
"THIRTEEN?!"
"Yeah." Midoriya shrugged. "See, I got really into trying to figure out Quirks that rapidly generate or transmute biomass, and I hit a wall in my research that I just couldn't satisfy by hacking into medical databases like usual-"
"HUH?!" Everyone screamed. Midoriya ignored them to continue rambling.
"So I figured that if people can do all kinds of crazy stuff with their cells naturally, then why can't I figure out a way to mimic them? Anyways, it turns out it's not so bad once you get into the swing of things." Midoriya explained.
"The swing of-" Ojiro stuttered. "Midoriya, that's a crime. You're a criminal."
"So's Kacchan, but you don't see me complaining." Midoriya pointed out.
"I SAID I WAS SORRY!"
"Wait, this all sounds expensive." Uraraka pointed out. "How did you get the materials?"
"Sold scrap I found while picking up litter." Midoriya casually explained. "The rest came from me using Kacchan's gaming PC to mine bitcoin."
"Is THAT why my shit started running like ass?!" Bakugou realized angrily.
"Don't take it personally." Midoriya assured Bakugou. "I also used all the computers at Aldera."
"I don't care about that." Bakugou shook his head. "What I care about is you COST ME A TOURNAMENT WIN."
"Kacchan, are you still playing Apex-"
"SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT VALORANT-"

Miscellaneous Skibidi Toilet ideas (part 3)
The only way to kill a Skibidi for good is to properly destroy the head (shooting, stabbing, etc.). If you only flush it, the Skibidi head is only temporarily out of action, and will later respawn in another empty toilet. (That's why the war is still going on - the alliance doesn't realise this and relies too much on flushing.)
---
Microphones and speakers are the same thing, just specialised in different directions. (That not a headcanon; that's literally true IRL. Any speaker can function as a crude microphone and vice versa.) Therefore, some cameras can learn to use their microphone as a tiny speaker, enabling them to audibly vocalise a bit (just very quietly and tinnily).
This would also explain why the Skibidi-possessed cameras are able to join in the 'skibidi skibidi skibidi' chant; they're sounding it out through their microphones.
They probably can't use their microphones as a mic and a speaker at the same time, so if they choose to talk out loud, they can't hear anything as they say it.
---
Imagine speakers enjoying discovering a cache of human-made music, until they stumbled across Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music and were like '…no no no no NO NO NO not that one!'
That album was made by Reed playing an electric guitar and putting a microphone between 2 amplifiers and recording the resulting feedback. Speakers would probably think that was so wrong!
---
Imagine hardware-heads being fascinated by humans being able to increase their strength through weight-lifting and other training. It means that humans can effectively self-upgrade. They'd probably be in awe of our tissues' ability to self-repair too.
---
Cameras see at a fixed framerate, resulting in some interesting effects when recording something that's in sync with the framerate. (This is a thing IRL; you've probably already seen clips of helicopter rotors or plane propellors in sync with a video camera, making it look as though the aircraft is mysteriously hovering without moving its engines.)
Therefore, with a bit of 'Hollywood logic', you could write something with Skibidis developing stealth technology that takes advantage of this effect, blinking out of existence during each frame. The stealthy Skibidi is undone when the hardware-heads call in a human ally to help - human eyes' saccades are too random for the Skibidi to keep up, and the human can see them!
(I won't go into saccades to avoid derailing the post, but look them up when you get a moment. The way eyes work is nuts!)
---
Silliness: imagine a hardware-head trying to access a human webpage but they can't because they don't tick the 'prove you're human/not a robot' tickbox. They think it's just a preferences thing; they don't realise it controls access to the page.
---
What would hardware-heads think of normal human-made hardware? Would it be creepy to them? If an Alliance camera saw a human-made CCTV camera on a pole, would that be disturbing because it's like a severed head? Or would it be fine because it's clearly a different thing from themselves? Or maybe it would be funny like a Halloween decoration, in the same way we might be amused by a funny skull on display.
---
The Titans' brains are so colossal and powerful that they could do Bitcoin-mining calculations in their heads just for fun.

Bitcoin Mining
The Evolution of Bitcoin Mining: From Solo Mining to Cloud-Based Solutions
Introduction
Bitcoin mining has come a long way since its early days when individuals could mine BTC using personal computers. Over the years, advancements in technology and increasing network difficulty have led to the rise of more sophisticated mining methods. Today, cloud mining solutions like NebuMine are revolutionizing cryptocurrency mining by making it more accessible and efficient. This article explores the journey of Bitcoin mining, from solo efforts to large-scale cloud mining operations.

The Early Days of Bitcoin Mining
In the beginning, Bitcoin mining was simple. Miners could use regular CPUs to solve cryptographic puzzles and validate transactions. However, as more participants joined the network, mining difficulty increased, leading to the adoption of more powerful GPUs.
As BTC mining grew, miners began forming mining pools to combine computing power and share rewards. This shift marked the transition from individual mining to more collective efforts in cryptocurrency mining.
The Rise of ASIC Mining
The introduction of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) in Bitcoin mining changed the game completely. These highly specialized machines offered unmatched efficiency, significantly increasing mining power while consuming less energy than GPUs.
However, ASICs also made mining more competitive, pushing small-scale miners out of the market. This led to the rise of large mining farms, further centralizing BTC mining operations.
The Shift to Cloud Mining
As the mining landscape became more challenging, cloud mining emerged as a viable alternative. Instead of investing in expensive hardware, users could rent mining power from platforms like NebuMine, enabling them to participate in Bitcoin mining without technical expertise or maintenance costs.
Cloud mining offers several advantages:
Accessibility: Users can start crypto mining without purchasing expensive equipment.
Scalability: Miners can adjust their computing power based on market conditions.
Convenience: No need for hardware setup, electricity costs, or cooling management.
With platforms like NebuMine, cloud mining has become a practical way for individuals and businesses to engage in BTC mining and Ethereum mining without the hassle of traditional setups.
Ethereum Mining and the Future of Crypto Mining
While Bitcoin mining has dominated the industry, Ethereum mining has also played a crucial role in the crypto space. With Ethereum’s shift to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), many miners have sought alternatives, further driving interest in cloud mining services.
Cryptocurrency mining continues to evolve, with new innovations such as AI-driven mining optimization and decentralized mining pools shaping the future. Platforms like NebuMine are at the forefront of this transformation, making cloud mining more accessible, efficient, and sustainable.

What Equipment to Use for Mining Bitcoin Profitably After the Halving?
In April 2024, the next Bitcoin halving took place. The reward for mining one block was reduced by 50% and is now 3.125 BTC. Due to this, some may begin to doubt mining — will this activity continue to bring in a decent income? Based on our extensive experience, we can confidently say that mining can and should remain profitable even after the halving. In this article, we will discuss how to organize Bitcoin mining most rationally and what equipment to choose for this.
Bitcoin Price Will Definitely Rise After the Halving
Since the launch of the first cryptocurrency, its halving has occurred approximately every four years. In 2024, this happened for the fifth time. Throughout all these years, the price of BTC, its market capitalization, and audience have steadily increased. The popularity of mining is also growing, and new technologies are being developed to increase its efficiency.
The person or team behind Bitcoin came up with halving to control inflation and maintain demand for the coin. Halving benefits Bitcoin and in no way deprives miners of their well-deserved reward. The rarer the asset, the higher its value — this rule works after each halving. That’s why starting mining right now is an excellent idea.
Three Secrets to Keep Mining Profitable
To make money mining BTC after its halving in 2024, you need to:
Buy or rent the latest generation equipment
Reduce expenses
Find a reliable hosting provider
Let’s take a closer look at all these points.
Today, one of the best ASICs for mining Bitcoin is the Antminer 21 series. It stands out for its high hashing power combined with relatively modest energy consumption. The Antminer 21 significantly outperforms miners of previous generations. The manufacturer of this series, Bitmain, is one of the most well-known in the industry. This is a reliable brand with a very strong team, extremely popular among crypto professionals.
To increase revenue, you can purchase multiple devices and combine them into a mining farm. However, this may require too high initial costs. Additionally, you will need to find a place to host the equipment. It not only consumes a lot of energy but also makes a lot of noise. To reduce the noise level, you can buy ASICs with a water cooling system — but they are more expensive than regular ones.
To cut costs, you can rent a miner instead of buying it. Remote providers can afford the most modern ASICs. You will be able to choose one or several machines with suitable characteristics. The provider will take care of the installation, maintenance, and repair of the equipment. Their staff has all the necessary knowledge and skills. Your involvement in mining will be minimal, and you will be able to receive truly passive income.
Another option is to try cloud mining, a more modern and accessible alternative. You will be renting not an ASIC but hashing power. First, you will purchase a contract on the most comfortable terms for you. After that, your task will be reduced to regularly transferring the commission to the provider — and they will take care of everything else. You will start receiving income on the rise in the price of Bitcoin. If you want to increase your profits, you can buy multiple contracts.
Each halving forces mining providers to rethink their strategies and optimize their activities. Some of those who cannot cope with these tasks close down. That’s why it’s important to check the provider’s history — the longer they have been in business, the better.
The second important parameter is customer reviews. It’s not a problem if some of them are negative — the main thing is that the majority are positive. The contract terms of a good provider are detailed and transparent. The support service is polite, informed, and responds promptly to customer inquiries.
ECOS meets all the criteria of a first-class provider for remote mining. This company is located in the free economic zone of Armenia, where cryptocurrencies are legal, and miners are exempt from taxes for 25 years. The Razdan power plant provides stable access to cheap energy. The security of the territory where the equipment is located is guaranteed by armed guards. The equipment downtime is close to zero. If an ASIC breaks down, it will be promptly repaired on-site, without wasting time sending it to the manufacturer’s service center.
ECOS clients can choose a cloud mining contract from existing options or create their own, individual one. The selection of equipment rental or purchase options is also very large. Clients appreciate ECOS for its transparent terms, reasonable prices, and quality service. This is an ideal provider for beginner miners who are just taking their first steps in the industry. Experienced miners note the exceptional reliability of ECOS, honesty, and timely payment of rewards.
ECOS Client Case
To confirm the above theory, let’s consider a real case of one of the ECOS clients. Let’s denote him by the nickname anto******duate.org.
Immediately after the previous halving in 2020, he bought an Antminer T17 for $699. The hashing speed of this miner was 38 terahashes per second. Four years ago, this model was considered advanced, one of the best on the market.
From November 25, 2020, to November 1, 2021, anto******duate.org earned 0.08026213 BTC with his Antminer T17, which in fiat currency amounted to $5,327. Hosting and miner maintenance costs were only $1,080. The client received a net profit of $3,548. Mining turned out to be a more profitable activity for him than buying bitcoins. If he had bought bitcoins, his profit would have been only $2,900.
To estimate your upcoming expenses and profits, you can use the calculator on the ECOS website. We hope that with the help of this tool, you will see that mining BTC can still be profitable even after the halving!

P. Cournet & N. Sanaan Bensi: Datapolis
Datapolis, Exploring the Footprint of Data on Our Planet and Beyond by Paul Cournet & Negar Sanaan Bensi (ed.); nai 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2023

Architecture is not only a few historical landmarks in our city centres, spectacular masterpieces from starchitects or engineering feats to build the highest tower ever in the desert. It has also always been about vernacularity, everyday life in anonymous places and favouring use towards aesthetics. (Just think of shopping malls or most of the airports you ever visited.) But if the Industrial revolution of the 19th century saw the birth of amazing train-cathedrals of steel and glass that are now listed as monuments, the 21st century has seen the development of the digital world to such an extent that the heavy industry has moved towards anonymous (and discreet) data centres, bitcoin mining facilities that requires satellites, computers and portable devices.

The book Datapolis is an in-depth research on a world where we cannot be offline more than a few hours anymore, where our smartphones contain our train ticket, bank payments, private images and favorite music, agenda and work, maps and recipes for the x-mas dinner. But all those 0 and 1, those bits, kilobits, megabits, gigabytes and terabytes of information are not in our machines anymore. We get our favourite songs and films from streaming companies, we store our entire lifestyle in so-called clouds, we work on shared documents. Basically we depend on infrastructure made of data centres, submarine cables and antennas, that stay out of sight for most of us.

This amazing publication is making the invisible (the infrastructure of clouds, the technical machines processing digital information) visible. It doesn’t only show those places, but also explains to us the environmental impact of digital objects. Not only we need resources from the ground (rare metal and so on), they also consume electricity to function on a daily basis — and this energy has to be, somehow, produced.

The essays – who could be totally nerdy or impossible to understand for readers that are not familiar with the vocabulary of technology – are super accessible and makes the book an easy (but always inspiring and instructive) reading. Between the text pages, one finds amazing graphics, diagrams and photographs that reveal the reality behind the theory. One finds a lot of architecture here, but it’s not our next destination for cultural holidays.

We, of course, have all seen The Matrix (1999). A science-fiction film about the digitisation of every life till it blurs the boundaries between the virtual and real life. The book explores that world, not from a fictive way, but a real one – and this makes it a must read: because what it shows us is even crazier than the imagination of film-makers. Obviously, we already live in the future! But, like all good science fiction story, Datapolis makes us think about our world as it is now, and what we should do to save it from becoming a nightmare. I will not spoil the last double page of the book (will just say it’s about iPhones), but, just for that one, you need to get that publication in your hands.
