the games have changed their ages of competition after capitol outcry, raising the minimum to 15 and the oldest to 22

rumored that district 1 and 2 snatch children from other districts to compete instead of their own kids - raise them in the red academy

natasha was the favored winner for her games - but died saving a boy (clint) from an outlying district who became winner

kate’s family is capitol (her father is bureaucratic and her mother has a successful business empire) but they are moved to the districts as a punishment after her father makes too many enemies (kate is about 7/8). kate and her mother are sent separately from her father and he never arrives at their new home.

the capitol assigns eleanor as the district’s mayor and she quickly applies her business tactics to increase the economic output of the district to try and win the capitols favor.

the district she’s sent to is clint’s. they have a chance meeting - kate is ten and she’s always in the wrong place at the wrong time. a fight breaks out and she’s got nowhere to go as the peacekeepers bear down on the crowd, it’s clint that plucks her out of it and shoves her down an alley to make an break for it. she’s obsessed ever since.

after her father’s disappearance she had started watching the hunger games with an intensity her mother worried about. kate had never known loss before her father, and the games fed into that void. after running into clint she was enthralled with his and natasha’s games. the way two strangers formed an unlikely bond against all odds. the way natasha was ripped from him.

after a heated argument with her mother before the reaping ceremony, kate volunteers as tribute when a girl barely 15 is chosen. it will be the first time a capitol-born child will compete. clint is the only mentor for her district.

yelena is a district 2 red academy tribute. they had begun experimentation after natasha’s games for mind control. she’s trained under the control until the reaping (would be considered “cheating” otherwise)

there’s lead up to the games - stolen glances in the training room, constant sparring with each other (kate isn’t convinced that yelena doesn’t purposefully line herself up so that they’re always partners), kate desperately trying to say hi, yelena never giving her the time of day but making offhanded comments during her interview that sounds very pointed at kate, “clint! that’s the girl! that’s the one i’ve been asking you about, who is she beyond district 2?”and then yelena does a whistle on stage and clint stiffens, his face pale and says, “kid, that’s your number one enemy in that arena.”

except in that arena, when kate has a clear shot after yelena’s finished district 10, yelena looks at her and does the slightest shake of her head. kate fumbles. in her hesitation, yelena scrambles on the terrain and knocks kate down the side of the rocky cliff. and she thinks this is it. except a wire goes taut and suddenly her body stops falling. by the time she makes it back over the cliffside, there’s another body.

- Kate Bishop, from like district 1-2?

- Yelena from district 1, where they actually train for the games.

- A few years ago Natasha volunteered to accompany her best friend Clint when he got drafted, and she ended up sacrificing herself so he could go home.

- Eleanor Bishop has been bribing people and making sure her daughter's name is not entered in the ballot for as long as possible

- but she pisses off kingpin, aka the President. He decides to make her pay for it by arranging for Kate's name to be drawn for the arena.

- Kate being from the 1/2 district has definitely been training all her life in preparation, although she is unaware of her mother's dealings for her protection.

- in addition to sending Kate to the arena, kingpin wants to make sure to send a message, and in comes yelena

-yelena basically gets hired to make sure Kate Bishop does not come out of the arena.

- at first she refuses, but then she is told Clint volunteered to be there to protect Kate, whom he's taken under his wing since his return from the games.

- so she accepts to volunteer, seeing a chance to take revenge for her sister's death, which she attributes to Clint.

- from here Kate and Yelena meet in the capitol, and since Yelena has been instructed to make it look like an accident she decides to befriend Kate in order to get a better idea as how to take her out the best way once they're in the arena.

-except that Kate Bishop is very charming and not at all what Yelena expected.

- so her plans change and she decides that Kate will be the one making it out of the arena no matter what.

Spent most of the night still thinking about this so here's some more specifics:

Yelena Belova

- from district 2.

- from birth people are either selected to be sent to the quarries, or selected for the peacemaker program, led by District 2 Mayor Dreykov. 

- Yelena and her sister were selected for the peacemaker program, and spent most of their lives training for it. 

- then Yelena gets reaped, and Natasha volunteers to take her place.  

- in the arena, she befriends Clint, the boy from district 1. They get close and form an alliance, protecting each other.

- then Natasha sacrifices herself so Clint will go home

- Yelena has since then harbored both incredible guilt at her sister's volunteering for her, and anger towards Clint, whom she saw swear to protect her sister live on TV. 

- since then, she's become a pawn to dreykov and the capitol, mainly acting as an assassin for potential political rivals, and anyone who could pose a threat to the capitol.

- on the eve of the reaping, she gets approached by President Fisk's personal assistant, Valentina, with a very special job: make sure district 1's Kate Bishop does not leave the arena.

- at first she is not interested. 

- but then she is told Clint Barton volunteered, and here is her chance to finally get revenge for her sister 

- to be fair at this point Yelena is fairly depressed, and death does not scare her. 

- all she can think about walking up to the stage is that she'll get to see her sister again soon. 

Kate Bishop

- from district 1, luxury items

- her dad died suspiciously on a trip to the capitol.

- she has no interest in her district's industry, and regularly rants against the capitol, which is an issue for Eleanor.

- her mother has done everything in her power to prevent her name being entered in the reaping, mainly favors and such to President Fisk, although Kate is not aware of that.

- Eleanor has let her train in pretty much whatever she wanted, so long as it kept Kate from lashing out publicly against the capitol for her father's death. 

Clint Barton 

- barely survived the games last time he was there. 

- after the games, has refused to interview, refused to mentor, and is only left alone by the capitol because Victor's from district 1 are not hard to come by.

- he built a family, he has a wife and kids, more money than he could ask for, but the guilt of Natasha's sacrifice has never left him.

- on the eve of the district 1 reaping Eleanor Bishop comes knocking on his door, crying and begging him to help his daughter. She says she made a mistake and by hearing that he knows what awaits the kid and that she will not leave the arena. 

- he offers to be a mentor to her, to prepare her, but Eleanor wants more. 

- she begs him to volunteer, and protect her daughter 

- at first Clint refuses, sends her back home with apologies and the promise to help her prepare.

- but then Natasha's sacrifice comes back to haunt him. And he looks at Kate's picture that Eleanor gave him, and all he sees is a kid that did nothing wrong, paying the price for mistakes she didn't make. 

- and he's old, and tired, and he doesn't want to owe his life anymore.

- so the next day he kisses his family, tells them he loves them, and volunteers.

More on the hunger games au because work is boring 

- Kate is not a revolutionary by any means

- she is just very angry at the capitol, the loss of her father still very fresh in her mind

- her anger is towards the unfairness of being subject to the whims of the president, who has anyone who displeased him killed. 

- she still enjoys much of the luxury that comes from being in district 1, even more so from having the favor of the capitol thanks to her mother's connections. 

- still she has spent a lot of her time training for the games, something her dad had always insisted on.

- 'Bishops are winners' he had said to her so often. So she won. At everything she tried. 

- in her mind Kate has always prepared for the Games. She has no clue the things her mother has done to prevent her name from being entered

- when her name gets called and no one volunteers, Kate thinks 'this is it. This is my moment'. But she is also secretly terrified because things have gotten very real, very fast. 

- and her mother starts talking to her about responsibilities in the goodbye room before the train, and Kate starts to think maybe this is her fault, maybe her name being called is not just fate, and maybe she ranted against the capitol one time too many. 

- so she cries and apologizes to her mother and Eleanor cannot bring herself to admit that it's her own fault for her daughter's situation.
