These pictures were taken on Tiritiri Matangi Island. While they may not be of the best quality, my biggest takeaway from this photography trip was the importance of the environment and timing in wildlife photography. The island is home to many bird species that I couldn't find on the mainland. However, the dense bushes and trees made it challenging to capture good shots. There was always something obstructing my view between my subject and my camera. Additionally, the trees blocked much of the sunlight, forcing me to use a very high ISO setting, which resulted in a lot of noise in the photos.

Proposal

This performative installation work intends to serve as a memorial to the lives lost during the global pandemic. I hope to explore grief, sorrow and loss in minimalist form.

Much inspired by the Berlin Holocaust Memorial by Peter Eisenman and the theory of post memory, I wish to use ice cubes and a large canvas in my work. I will carefully put the almost identical ice cubes on canvas one by one, and align them, just as hospital beds, or tombstones. Although it seems to be an anonymous and emotionless assembly line, all the ice cubes will be carved by hand, making them similar but unique. They are also affected by my hand’s temperature, strength of the grip, and the placement on the canvas. Leaving a unique mark on canvas, each ice cube goes back to nature in different speed and shape, contrasting the uniformity that I present them in. I chose canvas because it is a place for creativity and creation, as well as documentation. It witnesses the start and finish of an artwork.

The theory of post memory discusses how people should remember the suffering that happened to people before them. The canvas, once blank, after being inscribed by ice, returns to emptiness, asking the question of how we should commemorate the lives that are lost to COVID-19.

As for mise en scene, it will be a bird view documentation of my hand putting the ice cube on a squared canvas. The canvas will be put on grass during day time, under the sun. Camera will keep recording until all the ice melts and the canvas dries up.

The melting was my way of interrogating the loss and decay of human body.  The canvas also serves as a reminder of the existence and absence of ice, though eventually we might not see the water mark at all.
