A ride from Guwahati to Tawang on two wheels - travelogue

Tucked away in the frigid valleys in Northwestern Arunachal Pradesh is Tawang, a place that has captured my heart. Riding to Tawang makes me feel more than alive. A visit to Tawang is more like a pilgrimage, rather than just a trip. In February 2017, I was approached by the #RideAlongWithMRF community, for a sponsored ride to Tawang. It was a dream come true, as I had been yearning to make my ritual visit to that prettiest of all hill stations in Arunachal Pradesh. I did the ride, and also created a travelogue, which is live on the website. 10 Reasons Why You Will Fall In Love With The Guwahati To Tawang Route 

Guwahati – Tezpur The brisk chill of the morning makes the 200km transit from Guwahati to Tezpur a real treat. Add to that the seductive curves on the road to Jorabat, the ramrod-straight 90-km stretch on the Nagaon bypass and the epic Koliabhomora bridge, and you are already in riding Nirvana. The river Brahmaputra comes into view, greeting you like an old friend, as you roll into Tezpur, the cleanest city in India.

Tezpur to Bhalukpong  All right, how many of you have seen those test ride videos shot at the famed ‘Ring? (The Nurburgring, guys)? This is exactly what the ride from Tezpur to Bhalukpong is like. Combined with long, endless straights, there are technical corners, S-bends, chicanes and more, all with a heavenly view of the mountains in the horizon. You have to be extra alert here, not just because of the difficult patches, but also because animals from the Nameri National Park tend to charge oncoming vehicles.

Bhalukpong to Dirang  And just like that, you suddenly land upon a stretch that feels like a European country road. Zero visibility at the Neciphu Pass may hamper your speed, but we suggest a break to proceedings at the Nag Mandir temple so you can take in the wonderful view, as your bikes tick peacefully to the chirping of birds. 

Shangti Valley Camping is an excellent way to save money and also connect with Mother Nature. Case in point – The Shangti Valley. Yes, it does really offer so much “shanti” that waking up the next day after a night under the stars will be a task! The Shangti Valley is 12km from Dirang and is home to black-necked cranes, kiwi farms, wild orange trees and huge pastures where horses graze. 

Dirang to Sela Pass And the lesson in geography continues, as we head to something that looks like the Tundra regions (we did this in the 9th standard. Anyone remembers that?) Over a 60km patch of road, you will start from 4910f MSL and reach 13700 ft MSL. The roads here are in an average state, with a few broken patches, smooth corners and narrow hairpins making it a superb ride. Once at Sela, you will be in sub-zero temperatures, so better halt at the Prahari cafeteria to warm yourselves up over some bad jokes and a hot cup of tea. 

Sela With 101 lakes along the way, Sela Pass is basically snow-capped heaven in the winters. With temperatures falling to -10 degrees, the ride through Sela pass is worth it, because the frozen lakes will leave you nature lovers speechless. Paradise lake is, by the way, one of the best in the area!   Jaswantgarh War Memorial Now if you find riding here to be tough, imagine what fighting must have been like. At the Jaswantgarh War Memorial, one can relive the herculean battle the Indian army fought, to fend off the Chinese assault during the 1962 Indo-China War. The memorial is dedicated to Jaswant Singh, a man whose exemplary bravery in battle is what legends are made of. Have a cup and be a part of history at the Jaswantgarh War Memorial.

Tawang monastery A number of bikers will tell you that spending precious miles together with the love of your life is as close as you can get to meditation. Seen that “Feel Like God” ad? That’s exactly what riding up to the famed Tawang Monastery feels like. This imposing place of worship stands like a guardian of stone, at 10000 feet above MSL, watching over the Tawang-Chu valley and the Himalayas. The Tawang Monastery is the second largest of its kind in the world, and is home to 300 monks, with space for up to 700.  Pankang Teng Tso LakeFrom an earthquake many years ago was born the Pankang Teng Tso Lake. The name’s a mouthful, but this place seems to have been tailor-made for the lady love(s) in your life. Of course, there is an 18-km stretch of corners so exciting you will think that you are in Assen or Misano, and not in Arunachal Pradesh. PTSO has something for fans of Valentino Rossi and Hrithik Roshan, alike. Tawang Local Markets Next up is the local marketing scene at Tawang. Whether you are looking for adventure gear, prayer flags or crockery, you will find it at one of three major marketplaces(The Nehru Market, the Old Market and the New Market). And yes, do not forget to buy some Churpi, which is cheese made of Yak’s milk. It is a primary ingredient in some of the tastiest dishes in Arunachali cuisine. If you are broke, you can still embark on a window shopping expedition. Who knows? You might actually find a reason to stay back and never go home again.

Make way for NE...Gooty

Never did I think that I'd start my way into the seven sisters this way. Okk...kkk….let's do it again...I guess we all wish to visit that non-remote but still somehow frowned upon part of our motherland. Yes! You got that correct. I'm talking about the Seven Sisters of India. Like you all, I also wanted to explore the North-Eastern India.

So my journey began from Chandigarh before new year's eve on 29th of December. I guess you're feeling that ooz to know more and avid. So without any further a-do, let's begin the journey.

The Ola phase

I needed money. I needed it really bad. After all beginning my north-eastern trail was really important. So I decided that I'd get any odd job for three days as on the fortnight we were to leave. Made some arrangements, wasted a few hundreds, furiated for some hours and finally decided to drive for three nights. Finally earned some bills and left for Delhi this new year. Ride was a bit harsh. Not because of the roads or climate but because I was restless. But somehow I made it safely to Delhi.

The Train

Then began the long journey to the East. We travelled for two nights and roughly one and a half day crossing over around 2000 km of landscape through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, for some time Meghalaya as well and then finally entered Assam. It was a nice and warm morning when we woke up half asleep excited about reaching Guwahati. We had a really nice welcome from Guwahati. People, though couldn't understand us completely but still tried to communicate as accurately as they can. It was a really heart warming experience overall. We reached our friends place in not more than twenty minutes drive through the city.

Pobitora Sanctuary

The sanctuary is home to nearly ninety the great Indian one horned Rhinoceros. There are more than two thousand species of birds, that migrate into the sanctuary year around, and reptiles. We made a little late in the noon to sanctuary. If we had reached earlier, may be we would have spotted the mighty rhinos up close and more. It is suggested that these wilds are easily found around the trails early in the morning. Later that evening we made a quick visit to the renowned Kamakhya Devi temple to pay our prayers to the goddess and seek her blessings.

The Celebration

The main motif behind this visit was a friend's sister's reception party. ‘When you have your friends along, there's no room for worries’, a wise man once said. I obviously don't know that man! We don't need anyone else when we have each other. I guess that's true for everyone. Anyways, the celebration, we rocked it! The family, friends and relatives all enjoyed our presence and appreciated us for our carefree attitude. Those two nights and days were packed with homely tasks, preparations and of course the fun that we all had with each other.

Let's step into Meghalaya

Early in the morning we left for Shillong. This was the only place we all looked forward to throughout this trip. The sights, the ambience and the gushiness of Shillong as a tourist destination astounded me. I really did not expect it to be so polite in all the rush this city endeavours in. There was peace within the horns, markets and busy streets of this city. No doubt it is the true ‘Scotland of East’.

The getaway was worth working overnights, driving a cab through the city.

From merely few hundreds rhinos during 1970s to 2413 one-horned rhinos counted during the census in 2018. And they say that this number I sonly 12 more than that of count during 2015. In Kaziranga national park, also the Unesco World Heritage Site, the census is carried out every three years. This is a laudable conservation success story at Kaziranga, in Assam state, India, where two-third of the world’s population of the species are living.

The national park spread across around 430 sq km is also a home to many other animals and a destination for many migratory birds can be seen during the month of November & December. The weather condition i.e not so hot or so cold during winter and summer invites many tourist to spend few days with the wild life. However during rainy season i.e mainly during the month of July-August it becomes a difficult place for the people and also the animals here when the river Brahmaputra that passes through the national park start overflowing affecting a major part of the national park.

While the monsoon starts from February and the national park experience intermittent rains, the climate is good during October-May. However it is advisable to visit this place after checking the weather forecast in advance.

There are two nearby airports: Jorhat (123 km) and Guwahati (194 km) accessible by road.

There are Elephant safari as well as Jeep Safari available in the national park which is divided in to four ranges i.e Burapahar Range (Ghorakati), Eastern Range (Agaratoli), Kaziranga Range (Kohora) and Western Range (Bagori).

All the four ranges provides a different flavor and experience of the national park. While one-horned rhinos will be visible across all four ranges, there are also plenty of deers, boar, wild buffalo also many other animals and birds including the hornbill can be seen. Also the wild elephants can be seen during the safari. Sometimes Gibbons can be seen, that I found in my recent trip.

Timings for Elephant Safari;

Morning session: 5.30 am to 7.30 am

Afternoon session: 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Jeep Safari Timings:

Morning Jeep Safari:  07.00 am to 9:30 am

Afternoon Jeep Safari: 01.30 pm to 03.30 pm

While the days will be blocked with safari, there is an option of enjoying the Assamese dance and music and experience the culture in the evening at a place called Orchid Garden near Kohora.

Though Kaziranga is also declared as a Tiger reserve in the year 2006 and as per record there are more than 100 Royal Bengal Tigers are there in the forest, it is very hard to spot a tiger due to the size of the jungle areas. However in few instances people have seen in Wild Big Cat. May be I was not that lucky enough though I spend 2 complete days in Kaziranga.

There are many other wild life reserves are there in the state of Assam also near to Kaziranga. One should really plan for a comfortable days in and around Kaziranga to experience the wild from close.

All these innocent stories forced me to go back to the jungle again and again.
