It is often said – that is, it certainly ought to be said – that fluffy birds never learn! Or do they? …
For although it was warm and pleasant relaxing on the rock at a safe distance from the rising tide, it really wasn't very long at all before Algy began to feel rather bored. There simply wasn't enough going on up there: not enough excitement or entertainment at that distance from the ocean; not enough adventure, and little or no possibility of new discoveries…
The ever-modulating sound of the sea swirling and gurgling around the rocks below was certainly delightful, but how much more exhilarating and absorbing it was if one could get close enough to the water to watch each wave wash in from the mighty ocean beyond, and then whirl and splash and surge around every rock and mass of seaweed, churning this way and that, advancing and retreating, as it sang its never-ending song!
So Algy returned to his perch on the storm-tossed boulders which jutted out of the sand, barnacles and sticky bladderwrack notwithstanding, but this time a wee bit more warily, so that he was prepared to leap into the air at a moment's notice, should that become suddenly necessary…
As you set out for Ithaka hope your road is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery. Laistrygonians, Cyclops, angry Poseidon – don't be afraid of them: you'll never find things like that on your way as long as you keep your thoughts raised high, as long as a rare excitement stirs your spirit and your body. Laistrygonians, Cyclops, wild Poseidon – you won't encounter them unless you bring them along inside your soul, unless your soul sets them up in front of you. Hope your road is a long one. May there be many summer mornings when, with what pleasure, what joy, you enter harbors you're seeing for the first time; may you stop at Phoenician trading stations to buy fine things, mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony, sensual perfume of every kind – as many sensual perfumes as you can; and may you visit many Egyptian cities to learn and go on learning from their scholars. Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you're destined for. But don't hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you're old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you've gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you wouldn't have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you'll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
[Algy is quoting the poem Ithaka by the late 19th/early 20th century Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy (also known as Konstantin or Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis). He assumes that this is a translation from the Greek, but he isn't certain about that.]

You know what, fuck it. Best bird competition.
Prussia's bird (fanon: Gilbird) - He can deliver letters, only if Prussia writes it. He doesn't age, he just stays the same for centuries. He's been with Prussia for his entire life.
Mr. Puffin - Iceland's pet puffin who can talk, like a mafia boss. He's been with him ever since he was a child and never aged. He's pretty popular, basically Iceland's mascot, and a womanizer.
#i think this shitty competition will have like 3 rounds#considering the fact the birds in hetalia consists of gilbird mr. puffin pierre and spain's bird#or there's more and i just don't know#hetalia bird competition#hetalia#aph gilbird#hws gilbird#hetalia gilbird#prussia's bird#aph mr puffin#hws mr puffin#hetalia mr puffin#i made this out of boredom#and for fun

i got placed on a gull-heavy route for the christmas bird count
which is good, because the potential shame & dishonor of fucking up citizen science is the only force powerful enough to compel me to finally study the damn things
but also guhhhhhhhhhh
#i am told thay when you unlock the seventh chakra of birding#you gain the ability to stare at immature gulls on a windy seashore for hours without feeling pain cold hunger or boredom#but i being an undisciplined heathen have not achieved such heights and thus default to the following algorithm:#small gull? mew. big gull? glaucous-winged. some other gull? pretend you didn’t see it#birding

I'm in a lot of quail groups on facebook and there's been a huge push towards "breeding for temperament" aka culling any quail that doesn't behave like a potato. Your set up is bad and the birds are nervous? Cull. Its breeding season and you have too many pushy roosters harassing the hens and they retaliate? Cull. A bird pecks at another bird (natural instinct to peck at red) because it accidentally cut itself and is bleeding? Cull. You've stuffed too many birds in a small space and there's nowhere for the bottom birds to escape the top birds? Cull. You didn't put enough hides in and one of the birds is being territorial about the limited resources? Cull. Chick is 'too aggressive' in the brooder? Cull. I do imagine that overtime you will get more docile quail, for sure. And if they're going to cram them in like sadines, it is probably better for the birds to behave like potatoes. But I just find it interesting that the entire focus of "improving the animal" is really based on making the animal not an animal. Because animals and animal behavior is inconvenient for humans.
#musings#there is also a push for breeding for confirmation#which I think is hilarious#look I breed for health and eggs#if it is a healthy bird that isn't a total dickhead and it lays eggs#that's fine#its a quail being a quail#quail are pair species#they don't like living in harems#during the breeding season#they have strict pecking orders and complex social structures when they group up in a covey#also yes coturnix have limited intelligence and a high capacity to tolerate boredom#but they still need some enrichment and entertainment#otherwise they will start creating some out of their cagemates#when people put dogs in these conditions there is screaming#but its fine for birds#the problem is the birds not the way they're being confined and raised#obviously#just change the bird to make it better#LOL

#I’ve always thought eurasian eagle owl but im making a proper list out of boredom and got to thinking of Butlers having Haast’s Eagle#- ancestry because idk it’s cool? also Arno and Angeline get owl wings too so it’s not like Strigidae is getting left out here#both are very Butler birds but eagles have a slightly silly appeal that does indeed remind me of Butler so I’m asking the masses here.#also I’m just curious lol#poll#winged AU

Concept: Vampire character that represents strengthening ties to humanity and the natural world instead of dividing them
Vampire gets HEAVILY invested in eco conservation because they *can't* just shrug it off as the next generation's problems
A vampire that goes around eating oil tycoons and clear-cut logging CEOs and climate-denying politicians because their childhood village is a dirt pit now and the animals they saw growing up have become endangered
Immortal guys who anonymously donate huge sums of cash to wildlife preserves that oversee forests they used to hunt in
Fellow who, instead of succumbing to the boredom and waste of infinite time, has become feverishly obsessed with making sure this one specific species of snail will still be around in another hundred years
5000 year old woodsman who can still mimic the calls of extinct birds, who still remembers the mating calls of mammoths and wooly rhinos and wild horses
Ancient vampire who can still vaguely recall a cave somewhere with her whole family's hand prints in it, and not sure of it's precise location, keeps the whole area void of human activity so it doesn't become a tourist attraction
Vampire archeologist who digs up their old friend's remains and has the figure out how to prove, with evidence, how they know exactly who they were and what they looked like
Immortal anthropologist who reconstructs a face from a skull only to realize that they'd met them before a long, long time ago
